Jung's map of the soul: an introduction Murray Stein; hoopla digital Chicago : Open Court, English, 1998
More than a mere overview, the book offers readers a strong grounding in the basic principles of Jung's analytical psychology in addition to illuminating insights. Probably the best one-volume English language summary of Jung's thought. . . Stein develops the cartographical metaphor of the title by beginning with the "surface" (ego) of the psyche and exploring successively more complex areas, including complexes, libido thoery, shadow, "anima/us," the self, individuation, and synchronicity. The map soon resembles the multidisciplinary chart of a solar system more than it does a flat map. In each subject area, Stein draws heavily on papers that Jung wrote late in his life, but he sets these in the context of Jung's earlier developing thought. This method allows the author to demonstrate the interconnectedness and coherence of Jung's mature work. -- Choice, 10/15/98 Stein could just as aptly have named his introductory guide "Jung's Art of the Soul," for the course the founder of analytical psychology charted also has the intuitive sweep of an artist on an inner journey integrated within a systematic framework of techniques. Though acknowledging Jung's creative, intuitive approach to fathoming the mysteries of the individual and collective human psyche, the author presents a solid case for the basic coherency and empirical underpinnings of the great psychoanalyst's theory-counter to those who viewed him as more of a mystic or philosopher who espoused: "As within, so without." Territory consciously omitted from this psychic map concern his analytic practice and interpretation of culture, history, and religion. Organized like a graduate thesis, all the major concepts that evolved over Jung's lengthy career are lucidly summarized with some contextual details: ego-consciousness, complexes, libido theory, archetypes, persona/shadow, anima/animus, the self, individuation, and synchronicity. While this presentation is eminently more accessible than most Jungian texts-and Stein does preface it with personal remarks about his long-time attraction to Jung-those who seek a sense of Jung's own voice and personal development in his quest for answers to many of life's enigmas will have their appetites whet to explore further. -- From Independent Publisher

Solitude : A Philosophical Encounter Philip Koch Open Court : Made available through hoopla, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), New York, 2015
In Koch's Solitude , both solitude and engagement emerge as primary modes of human experience, equally essential for human completion. This work draws upon the vast corpus of literary reflections on solitude, especially Lao Tze, Sappho, Plotinus, Augustine, Petrarch, Montaigne, Goethe, Shelley, Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman and Proust. "Koch uses the work of philosophers, historians, and writers, as well as texts such as the Bible, to show what solitude is and isn't, and what being alone can do to and for the individual. Interesting for its literary scope and its conclusions about all the good true solitude can bring us." — Booklist "Reading this book is like dipping into many minds, fierce and gentle. The author reveals his long study of great philosophers, and interprets their thoughts through the lens of his own experience with solitude. He traces our early brushes with solitude and the fear it can engender, then the craving for solitude that comes with full, adult lives." — NAPRA Review

If I Were A kid in Ancient Rome (If I Were A kid in Ancient…) Lou Waryncia; Kenneth M Sheldon ePals Publishing, Children of the Ancient World, 2007
If YOU were a kid in the ancient world, everything would be different - or WOULD it? Kids today share many of the same experiences as kids who lived in the ancient world - even though thousands of years have gone by. If YOU were a kid living in ancient Rome . . . Would you go to school or gym class? What would you eat for breakfast and dinner? What toys would you play with? What "house rules" would your parents expect you to obey? Where would you hang out with friends? If I Were a Kid in Ancient Rome offers a fascinating look at the daily life of children growing up many years ago - and how it compares to life today.

lgli/Szasz Under Fire A Psychiatric Abolitionist Faces His Critics [1095212].pdf
Szasz Under Fire: A Psychiatric Abolitionist Faces His Critics (Under Fire Series) Jeffrey A Schaler; hoopla digital Open Court : Made available through hoopla, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), New York, 2015
Since he published The Myth of Mental Illness in 1961, professor of psychiatry Thomas Szasz has been the scourge of the psychiatric establishment. In dozens of books and articles, he has argued passionately and knowledgeably against compulsory commitment of the mentally ill, against the war on drugs, against the insanity defense in criminal trials, against the "diseasing" of voluntary humanpractices such as addiction and homosexual behavior, against the drugging of schoolchildren with Ritalin, and for the right to suicide. Most controversial of all has been his denial that "mental illness" is a literal disease, treatable by medical practitioners. In Szasz Under Fire, psychologists, psychiatrists, and other leading experts who disagree with Szasz on specific issues explain the reasons, with no holds barred, and Szasz replies cogently and pungently to each of them. Topics debated include the nature of mental illness, the right to suicide, the insanity defense, the use and abuse of drugs, and the responsibilities of psychiatrists and therapists. These exchanges are preceded by Szasz's autobiography and followed by a bibliography of his works.

upload/trantor/en/Friedman, David/The Machinery of Freedom_ Guide to a Radical Capitalism.epub
The machinery of freedom : guide to a radical capitalism David D Friedman Open Court Publishing Company, 2015
David Friedman's The Machinery of Freedom argues for the extension of free market solutions into every area of life, from streets and roads to law enforcement. Friedman applies mainstream economic theory to everyday problems, brushes aside fallacious economic reasoning, and answers the most likely objections to make a formidable case for replacing state coercion with free and voluntary transactions. Friedman examines the ethics of economic life and shows how property is essential to the maintenance of any society. He refutes misconceptions about the ethical consequences of property and contracts, especially those concerned with interest on capital and the distributive repercussions of recognizing people's property rights. He gives a clear analysis of the problem of monopoly, showing how attempts to create a monopoly without government help result in failure, and how government imposed monopoly helps a privileged group while hurting the general public. Earlier editions of this work gave rise to a long-running debate among economists about the feasibility or desirability of turning police, courts, and law over to the voluntary arrangements of individuals. This new edition explores the latest wrinkles in these debates, and makes the case that law creation and enforcement can efficiently emerge from voluntary interactions.

lgli/Divergent and Philosophy The Factions of Life (Popular Culture and Philosophy) [1095220].epub
Divergent and Philosophy: The Factions of Life (Popular Culture and Philosophy, 94) Courtland Lewis (editor) Open Court Publishing Company, Popular Culture and Philosophy, 94; 94, 2016
Courtland Lewis has scoured the planet to bring together the most talented faction members, factionless, and even a few from the Bureau to discuss the philosophy of Divergent . Divergent and Philosophy begins by examining the personal struggles that all people face at some time: What sort of person should I be? What if I find out my life is a lie? What do I owe my parents? Am I normal? Once readers have finished answering these questions they’re ready for the “choosing ceremony.” Part two examines each faction, looking at its virtues, vices, and other features that will help readers pick the “right” faction. This part gives readers a glimpse into what it’s like to be faced with the most important decision of our lives, the one that will forever determine who we are. Part three takes a step takes a step back, in order to question Chicago's ordering of society. Chicago is on the verge of revolution, but is this the result of the faction system itself, or is it the people within the factions that are behind the social discord? Part four shifts the focus individuals and those who hold power. Part five tells us how to recognize injustice.

lgli/American Horror Story and Philosophy Life Is but a Nightmare (Popular Culture and Philosophy) [AN 1624514].epub
American Horror Story and Philosophy : Life Is but a Nightmare Richard Greene; Rachel Robison-Greene Open Court Publishing Company, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), [N.p.], 2017
In American Horror Story and Philosophy, philosophers with varying backgrounds and interests explore different aspects of this popular “erotic thriller” TV show, with its enthusiastic cult following and strong critical approval. The result is a collection of intriguing and provocative thoughts on deeper questions prompted by the creepy side of the human imagination. As an “anthology show,” American Horror Story has a unique structure in the horror genre because it explores distinct subgenres of horror in each season. As a result, each season raises its own set of philosophical issues. The show’s first season, Murder House, is a traditional haunted house story. Philosophical topics expounded here include: the moral issues pertaining to featuring a mass murderer as one of the season’s main protagonists; the problem of other minds—when I see an old hag, how can I know that you don’t see a sexy maid? And whether it is rationally justified to fear the Piggy Man. Season Two, Asylum, takes place inside a mid-twentieth-century mental hospital. Among other classic horror subgenres, this season includes story lines featuring demonic possession and space aliens. Chapters inspired by this season include such topics as: the ethics of investigative reporting and whistleblowing; personal identity and demonic possession; philosophical problems arising from eugenics; and the ethics and efficacy of torture. Season Three, Coven, focuses on witchcraft in the contemporary world. Chapters motivated by this season include: sisterhood and feminism as starkly demonstrated in a coven; the metaphysics of traditional voodoo zombies (in contrast to the currently fashionable “infected” zombies); the uses of violent revenge; and the metaphysics of reanimation. Season Four, Freak Show, takes place in a circus. Philosophical writers look at life under the Big Top as an example of “life imitating art”; several puzzles about personal identity and identity politics (crystallized in the two-headed girl, the bearded lady, and the lobster boy); the ethical question of honor and virtue among thieves; as well as several topics in social and political philosophy. Season Five, Hotel, is, among other disturbing material, about vampires. Chapters inspired by this season include: the ethics of creating vampire progeny; LGBT-related philosophical issues; and existentialism as it applies to serial killers, Season Six, Roanoke, often considered the most creative of the seasons so far, partly because of its employment of the style of documentaries with dramatic re-enactments, and its mimicry of The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity. Among the philosophical themes explored here are what happens to moral obligations under the Blood Moon; the proper role of truth in storytelling; and the defensibility of cultural imperialism.

lgli/Halo and Philosophy Intellect Evolved (Popular Culture and Philosophy) [479325].epub
Halo and Philosophy: Intellect Evolved (Popular Culture and Philosophy Book 59) Luke Cuddy; Fred Van Lente Open Court Publishing Company, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), Chicago, 2011
Since the Doom series, First Person Shooter (FPS) videogames have ricocheted through the gaming community, often reaching outside that community to the wider public. While critics primarily lampoon FPSs for their aggressiveness and on-screen violence, gamers see something else. Halo is one of the greatest, most successful FPSs ever to grace the world of gaming. Although Halo is a FPS, it has a science-fiction storyline that draws from previous award-winning science fiction literature. It employs a game mechanic that limits the amount of weapons a player can carry to two, and a multiplayer element that has spawned websites like Red vs. Blue and games within the game created by players themselves. Halo 's unique and extraordinary features raise serious questions. Are campers really doing anything wrong? Does Halo 's music match the experience of the gamer? Would Plato have used Halo to train citizens to live an ethical life? What sort of Artificial Intelligence exists in Halo and how is it used? Can the player's experience of war tell us anything about actual war? Is there meaning to Master Chief's rough existence? How does it affect the player's ego if she identifies too strongly with an aggressive character like Master Chief? Is Halo really science fiction? Can Halo be used for enlightenment-oriented thinking in the Buddhist sense? Does Halo 's weapon limitation actually contribute to the depth of the gameplay? When we willingly play Halo only to die again and again, are we engaging in some sort of self-injurious behavior? What is expansive gameplay and how can it be informed by the philosophy of Michel Foucault? In what way does Halo 's post-apocalyptic paradigm force gamers to see themselves as agents of divine deliverance? What can Red vs. Blue teach us about personal identity? These questions are tackled by writers who are both Halo cognoscenti and active philosophers, with a foreword by renowned Halo fiction author Fred Van Lente and an afterword by leading games scholar and artist Roger Ngim.

Bob Dylan and Philosophy: It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Thinking) (Popular Culture and Philosophy Book 17) Carl J. Porter; Peter Vernezze; William Irwin Open Court Publishing Company, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), New York, 2011
The legions of Bob Dylan fans know that Dylan is not just a great composer, writer, and performer, but a great thinker as well. In Bob Dylan and Philosophy, eighteen philosophers analyze Dylan's ethical positions, political commitments, views on gender and sexuality, and his complicated and controversial attitudes toward religion. All phases of Dylan's output are covered, from his early acoustic folk ballads and anthem-like protest songs to his controversial switch to electric guitar to his sometimes puzzling, often profound music of the 1970s and beyond. The book examines different aspects of Dylan's creative thought through a philosophical lens, including personal identity, negative and positive freedom, enlightenment and postmodernism in his social criticism, and the morality of bootlegging. An engaging introduction to deep philosophical truths, the book provides Dylan fans with an opportunity to learn about philosophy while impressing fans of philosophy with the deeper implications of his intellectual achievements.

lgli/Amy Schumer and Philosophy Brainwreck! (Popular Culture and Philosophy) [1868748].epub
Amy Schumer and Philosophy : Brainwreck! Charlene Elsby; Rob Luzecky Open Court Publishing Company, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), Chicago, Illinois, 2018
Why read a book about Amy Schumer and philosophy? After all, Amy Schumer is primarily known as a comedian, though she is also an actor, writer, and producer. One reason is that it will be enlightening. Amy Schumer is one of a handful of contemporary comedians filling the role of public philosopher. To be clear, Amy herself does not claim to be offering wisdom.

This volume contains seventeen fun-filled chapters. One author makes the case that Amy uses humor to encourage her audience to consider important questions, for example, she does this when she discusses the trial of Bill Cosby while evoking fond memories of The Cosby Show. She essentially asks her audience to consider whether they give priority to unconflicted entertainment over justice for rape victims. In another chapter, the author casts a philosophical eye toward the action-comedy film Snatched and finds that it raises questions about responsibility: Is Schumer’s character, Emily, responsible for getting kidnapped in Ecuador? Is Emily responsible for the death of one of her kidnappers? Another author asks whether Snatched can be a great comedy and still get negative reviews? What is the role of art and who determines whether a work of art is good or beautiful? What do Amy Schumer and Friedrich Nietzsche have in common? Is Amy a “sex comic” or an “issue comic”? With her typical self-deprecating comedic style, Amy makes jokes by highlighting the absurd, the illogical, and the hypocritical in gender relations, notions of masculinity and femininity, and superficial values.

But the main reason to read Amy Schumer and Philosophy is that it a pretty awesome read and laughter will most definitely ensue.

The Wire and Philosophy: This America, Man (Popular Culture and Philosophy Book 73) David Bzdak; Joanna Crosby; Seth Vannatta Open Court Publishing Company, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), Chicago, 2013
By many accounts, HBO's The Wire was and remains the greatest and most important television drama of all time. Conceived by writers David Simon and ex-Baltimore homicide detective Ed Burns, this five-season, sixty-episode tour de force has raised the bar for compelling, intelligent television production. With each season addressing a different arena of life in the city of Baltimore, and each season's narratives tapping into those from previous seasons, The Wire was able to reveal the overlapping, criss-crossing, and colliding realities that shape—if not control—the people, institutions, and culture of the modern American city. The Wire and Philosophy celebrates this show's realism as well as its intellectual and philosophical clarity. Selected philosophers who are fans of The Wire tap into these conflicts and interconnections to expose the underlying philosophical issues and assumptions and pursue questions, such as, Can cops really tell whether they are smarter than their perps? Or do they fall victim to intellectual vanity? Do individuals really have free will to resist the temptations—of gangs, of drugs, or corruption—that surround them? Is David Simon a modern-day Marx who sees capitalism leading ultimately to its own collapse, or is Baltimore's story uniquely its own?

Scott Adams and Philosophy (Popular Culture and Philosophy Book 118) Daniel Yim; Galen A Foresman; Robert Arp Open Court Publishing Company, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), Chicago, 2018
As cartoonist, author, public speaker, blogger, and periscoper, Scott Adams has had best-sellers in several different fields: his Dilbert cartoons, his meditations on the philosophy of Dilbert, his works on how to achieve success in business and all other areas of life, his two remarkable books on religion, and now his controversial work on political persuasion.

Adams’s two most recent best-sellers are How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big: Kind of the Story of My Life (2014) and Win Bigly: Persuasion in a World Where Facts Don’t Matter (2017). Adams predicted Donald Trump’s election victory (on August 13th 2016) and has explained then and more recently how Trump operates as a Master Persuader, using “weapons-grade” persuasive techniques to defeat his opponents and often to stay several moves ahead of them.

Adams has provocative ideas in many areas, for example his outrageous claim that 30 percent of the population have absolutely no sense of humor, and take their cue from conventional opinion in deciding whether something is a joke, since they have no way of deciding this for themselves.

In Scott Adams and Philosophy, an elite cadre of people who think for a living put Scott Adams’s ideas under scrutiny. Every aspect of Adams’s fascinating and infuriating system of ideas is explained and tested.

Among the key topics:

Does humor inform us about reality?
Do religious extremists know something the rest of us don’t?
What are facts and how can they not matter?
What happens when confirmation bias meets cognitive dissonance?
How can we tell whether President Trump is a genius or just dumb-lucky?
Does the Dilbert philosophy discourage the struggle for better workplace conditions?
How sound is Adams’s claim that “systems” thinking beats goal-directed thinking?
Does Dilbert exhibit a Nietzschean or a Kierkegaardian sense of life? Or is it Sisyphian in Camus’s sense?
Can truth be over-rated?
“The political side that is out of power is the side that hallucinates the most.”
If there’s a serious chance we’re living in a Matrix-type simulation, how should we change our behavior?
Are most public policy issues just too complex and technical for most people to have an opinion about?
In politics, says Adams, it’s as if different people watch the same movie at the same time, some thinking it’s a romantic comedy and others thinking it’s a horror picture. How is that possible?
Does logic play any part in persuasion?

Futurama and philosophy : bite my shiny metal axiom Young, Shaun P., Lewis, Courtland Open Court Publishing Company, Perseus Books, LLC, [N.p.], 2013
"Futurama is a quirky, animated sitcom created by Simpson's mastermind, Matt Groening. It follows the adventures of a pizza delivery man transported far, far into a cosmic future of witty, sarcastic robots and one-eyed femme fatales. Since first airing on the Fox network from 1999 to 2003, Futurama's many dedicated fans created websites and newsletters and organized Comic-Con meetups and letter-writing campaigns in hopes of learning the further adventures of Bender, Leela, Dr. Farnsworth, and the deliveryman Philip J. Fry. In the meantime, fans survived on syndicated re-runs, books, wall calendars, and four feature-length movies released on DVD and online streaming. In 2009, Fox announced that Futurama would have a future and new episodes returned to Comedy Central channel. Futurama and Philosophy will meet this new surge of interest and popularity in its Popular Culture and Philosophy series. Twenty-first-century philosophers and Futurama fans can compare notes about time travel, alternate universes, the evolution of life, artificial intelligence, and the ethical dilemmas of suicide booths, 'mad' scientists like Farnsworth and robots like Bender who aspire to bad taste and 'kiss-my-metal-ass' rudeness. Would 'interplanetary golf' really be possible? Why is it that a fossilized dog is really 'man's best friend'? What is going on inside Dr. Zoidberg's Freedom Lesson? Why is Bender, in fact, a responsible moral being? Is Death Intrinsically Bad? And what's with the 'Seriously Freaked Up Nature of Morality' exhibited in the show? Fans who appreciate the wit and wisdom Futurama's characters, and especially the cosmic, existential framework in which their adventures unfold, will find Futurama and Philosophy to be a unique and lasting contribution to the Futurama revival--at least until Philip J. Fry is unfrozen"--Provided by publisher

The Devil and Philosophy: The Nature of His Game (Popular Culture and Philosophy Book 83) Robert Arp Open Court Publishing Company, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), Chicago, 2014
"In The Devil and Philosophy, 34 philosophers explore questions about one of the most recognizable and influential characters (villains?) of all time. From Roman Polanski's The Ninth Gate to J.R.R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion to Bram Stoker's Dracula to Darth Vader to Al Pacino's iconic performance in The Devil's Advocate, this book demonstrates that a little devil goes a long way. From humorous appearances, as in Kevin Smith's film Dogma and Chuck Palahniuk's novels Damned and its sequel Doomed, to more villanous appearances, such as Gabriel Byrne's cold outing as Satan in End of Days, The Devil in Philosophy proves that the Devil comes in many forms. Through the lenses of Jung, Kant, Kundera, Balkan, Plato, Bradwardine, Aristotle, Hume, Blackburn, Descartes, Lavey, Thoreau, and Aquinas, The Devil and Philosophy take a philosophical look at one of time's greatest characters. Are there any good arguments for the actual existence of the Devil? Does demonic evil thrive in Gotham City? Can humans really be accountable for all evil? Which truths about the Devil are actual facts? Is Milton correct, in that the Devil believes he is doing good?"--Provided by publisher

If I Were A kid in Ancient Greece (If I Were A kid in Ancient…) Lou Waryncia; Kenneth M Sheldon ePals Publishing, Children of the Ancient World, 2007
Reminders of Greek culture are everywhere evident today, from bubblegum to plays (Greeks invented both). But what was ancient Greece like for children? As this book explains, youngsters were well educated, sometimes with private teachers. They studied music, practicing as much as three hours a day! They engaged in mock-battles as a way to learn bravery. And they worshipped their gods in temples, just like adults did. This book covers "house rules," gym class, the Olympic games, the Greek gods, pets, and a host of other topics designed to introduce a legendary society to young minds.

Today, zombies and vampires have taken over TV shows, comic books, cartoons, video games, and movies. Zombies, Vampires, and Philosophy drags the theories of famous philosophers like Socrates and Descartes into the territory of the undead, exploring questions like: Why do vampires and vegetarians share a similar worldview? Why is understanding zombies the key to health care reform? And what does "healthy in mind and body" mean for vampires and zombies? Answers to these questions and more await readers brave enough to make this fun, philosophical foray into the undead.
