The Christian Watt Papers David Fraser ELAND PUBLISHING LTD, 2023
Caught between these covers is the authentic, forthright voice of Christian Watt, servant girl, lady's maid and fishwife. Born in 1833, her working life began in domestic service before the age of nine and ended with her selling her husband's catch from door to door. The tragic death of most of her close male family – her husband, four brothers and her favourite child – drowned by a sudden squall that sunk their boat, robbed her of her sanity. But she was cared for in the remarkable Cornhill Asylum in Aberdeen, where a kindly doctor encouraged her to write her memoirs in pencil. In 1983 this bundle of papers, which included other family documents, was turned into a book by David Fraser.

So It Goes: Travels in the Aran Isles, Xian and places in between (Eland Original) Nicolas Bouvier; Robyn Marsack Eland Publishing Ltd, London, 2019

Translated here for the first time into English, this collection of shorter travel writings from the golden pen of Nicolas Bouvier covers journeys undertaken in the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s. In the Aran Isles in mid-winter, he glories in the extremities of the wind outside while inside, feverish, he is enchanted by local tales which hum like a kettle on the fire. In Xian, he pays homage to the civilised brilliance and understatement of his guide, while in Korea he experiences the unchanging beauty of the Buddhist temple at Haeinsa and is marked forever by his climb of volcanic Halla-San. And the roots of his interminable curiosity and amusement are traced back to his childhood reading, and to the bitter war he conducted at the age of eight to rid himself of his arch-nemesis, Bertha.

Sultan in Oman Jan Morris Eland Publishing Ltd, 3, 20200507
In 1955 the winds of change were beginning to blow across the Sultanate of Oman, a hitherto truly medieval state. Rumours of subversion mingled with the unsettling smell of oil to propel the Sultan on a royal progress across the desert hinterland, from his southern capital of Salala to the northern capital of Muscat. It was an historic journey – the first crossing of the Omani desert by motorcar. Jan Morris accompanied His Highness Sultan Said bin Taimur as a professional observer, and was inspired by the experience to write her major work of imperial history, the __Pax Britannica__ trilogy.

zlib/no-category/Norman Lewis/An Empire of the East_29552453.azw3
An Empire of the East : Travels in Indonesia Norman Lewis Eland Publishing Limited, Bookwire GmbH, New York, 2014
Norman Lewis was eighty-three years old when he embarked on a series of three arduous journeys into the most contentious corners of Indonesia: western Sumatra, East Timor and Irian Jaya. Presenting himself as the picture of innocence, he reports only what he observes, using his well honed tools of irony and humour to deliver a devastating assessment of the brutality of the central government in these outlying corners of its empire. Lewis observes the decimation of tropical rainforests in Sumatra and unearths the all-but-forgotten massacre of communists in 1965, and describes his visit to the gargantuan Freeport Copper mine in Irian Jaya- a foretaste of the film Avatar, in which this time the bad guys triumph. He reveals his passion for justice and his delight in every form of human society whilst gently challenging our complacency and lazy indifference.

The Hill of Kronos Peter Levi Eland Publishing Ltd, Illustrated, 2020

Peter Levi paints a radiant portrait of the Greece he came to know through a lifetime of exploration. As a young scholar he sought out its ancient spirit, the keys to its mythology and civilisation, in its ruined cities and majestic mountains. Later, as a priest working as a diplomat and a friend of the oppressed, he lived in Athens through the dark days of the dictatorship. The sinews of political life led back to secret alliances made during the civil war and the earlier occupation of Greece, back to murder, starvation and corpse-filled quarries. Lastly, he sees the country through the mature eyes of a family man, with the ripened sensibility of an acclaimed poet. This is a precious fusion of experience and insight from one philhellene to all those who have come to love Greece.

The Villa Ariadne Dilys Powell Eland Publishing Ltd, London, 2016
The Villa Ariadne stands above the Minoan ruins of Knossos in Crete, a memorial to the British archaeologists who built, lived and worked there. Dilys Powell brings to life the autocratic founder Arthur Evans and his successor John Pendlebury, whose heroic leadership of the local defence against German invasion in 1941 made him a legend. The villa was also the site of the daring kidnap of German General Kreipe by special operations officers, including Patrick Leigh Fermor, in 1944. But The Villa Ariadne is far more than just their story. Uniting ancient myths and history with first-hand observation and tales she is told, Dilys Powell leaves us a complex portrait of the island as a whole - a place she knew and loved for forty years.

Eothen: Traces of Travels brought home from the East Alexander William Kinglake; Jonathan Raban Eland Publishing Ltd, 3, 20200507

One of the most witty and idiosyncratic travel books, Eothen started out as a few notes scribbled on the back of a map for a friend, but took Kinglake seven years of painstaking work to finesse. The physical details of the journey, undertaken in 1834 through Turkey, Cyprus, the Holy Land, Cairo and Damascus, are barely mentioned. The infectious charm lies in the conversations, the whimsical chance encounters and the attitudes of the author. Over the years, Kinglake has been recognised as a stylist without equal.

Dark Journey : The Legend of Kamelya and Murat Irfan Orga Eland Publishing Limited, Erscheinungsort nicht ermittelbar, 2015
Dark Journey is the disturbing, fast-paced story of a young Turkish woman's descent towards moral annihilation in the early twentieth century -one part Maupassant, one part One Thousand and One Nights. In the early Turkish republic, the options for an impoverished widow with a child are few, and the choices made by Kamelya lead to her estrangement from her son Murat. But blood ties, secrecy and fate bring them back together for a denouement that smoulders, like a Greek myth, with pent-up love and its explosive corollary, deep-seated hate. More than thirty years after the death of Irfan Orga, author of the cult memoir Portrait of a Turkish Family, his son opened an old attaché case and rediscovered a coffee-stained typescript tied up with string. This is Dark Journey. It springs from a sombre understanding of the ambivalence of human nature, a metaphor, perhaps, for the exiled Orga's Turkish republican homeland.

Goodbye Buenos Aires Andrew Graham-Yooll Eland Publishing Ltd, London, 2020
Buenos Aires in the 1920s was a fascinating destination for a young person looking for a new life: a place of fantasy, adventure and prospects of fast wealth. In __Goodbye Buenos Aires__ Andrew Graham-Yooll weaves together a lightly fictionalized biography of his father, who arrived from Edinburgh, penniless, in 1928, and an account of twentieth-century Argentina. He provides a vivid description of the country, of the torment of emigration and of the catalogue of characters – from the Prince of Wales to Lawrence Durrell and Aristotle Onassis – who flaunted their fortunes and vented their fury about life in this city on the River Plate.

Viva Mexico! Charles Macomb Flandrau; Nicholas Shakespeare Eland Publishing Limited, Bookwire GmbH, New York, 2012
Flandrau was a rich young American with an individual sense of humour and no prejudices, except against Western uniformity. His travel book, first published in 1908, is more than a ramble among the Mexican people. Based on his brother's coffee plantation, he spent the best part of five years in a country which he describes as 'one long carelessly written but absorbing romance'. His insights into the customs and character of rural Mexicans, and expatriate gringos, apply to this day.

At the beginning of the Second World War, Koestler was living in the south of France working on Darkness at Noon. After retreating to Paris he was imprisoned by the French as an undesirable alien even though he had been a respected crusader against fascism. Only luck and his passionate energy allowed him to escape the fate of many of the innocent refugees, who were handed over to the Nazis for torture and often execution. Scum of the Earth is more than the story of Koestler's survival. His shrewd observation of the collapse of French determination to resist during the summer of 1940 is an illustration of what happens when a nation loses its honour and its pride.

Morocco That Was Harris, Walter Eland & Sickle Moo, Paperback edition, London, 1983
"Until 1912 Morocco had never suffered foreign domination, and its mountainous interior was as closed to foreigners as Tibet. Walter Harris was the exception. He lived in the country for more than thirty-five years, and as The Times correspondent he observed every aspect of its life. He describes the unfettered Sultanate in all its dark, melodramatic splendour." Harris was an intimate of at least three of the ruling Sultans and a man even capable of befriending his kidnapper. It was said that only three Christians had ever visited the walled city of Chechaouen: one was poisoned, one came for an hour disguised as a rabbi ... the other was Walter Harris.

The honoured society : the Sicilian Mafia observed Norman Lewis, Lewis, Norman., Norman Lewis, Arturo Peral Santamaría Eland Publishing Limited, 1964
The Honoured Society describes how the US army returned the Mafia to power in 1944, after Mussolini came close to destroying them. It looks at the Mafia in their homeland - how in attempting to preserve Sicily for the Sicilians in the face of countless invasions it infiltrated every aspect of the island's life, corrupting landowners, the police, the judiciary and even the church. In one chilling chapter Norman Lewis details the escapades of eighty-year-old Padre Camelo, who led his monks on sprees of murder and extortion, frequently using the confessional box for transmitting threats.words : 88069

A Visit to Don Otavio : A Mexican Odyssey Sybille Bedford Eland Publishing Ltd, Gardners Books, New Ed edition, July 31, 2002
Mexico, through the eyes of Sybille Bedford, is a country of passion and paradox: arid desert and shrieking jungle, harsh sun and deep shadow, violence and sentimentality. In her frank descriptions of the horrors of travel- trapped in a broiling stationary train, or in a bus with a dead fish against her face- she gains our trust. But it is the charmed world of Don Otavio which steals our imagination. He is, she says,'one of the kindest men I ever met.'She stays in his crumbling ancestral mansion, living a life of provincial ease and observing with glee the intense theatricality of a Mexican neighbourhood.

Lords of the Atlas : the rise and fall of the house of Glaoua, 1893-1956 Gavin Maxwell E. P. Dutton, 1966
Lords of the Atlas: The Rise and Fall of the House of Glaoua 1893-1956Madini and T'hami El Glaoui, sons of a Moroccan caid by an Ethiopian concubine, rose meteorically to power in the almost medieval state of Morocco at the end of the nineteenth century. This is the epic story of the more than fifty years in which they governed the country in barbaric, ostentatious splendor, until their spectacular downfall in 1956.Out of the intriguing and dramatic lives of Madini and T'hami, Gavin Maxwell has fashioned an epic story set against the superb background of Marrakesh and the pinnacled castles of the High Atlas, still magnificent as crumbling ruins. A dramatic history of intrigue, action, and exotic places, and illustrated with over one hundred color illustrations and photographs, "Lords of the Atlas" is a stunning look at the rise and fall of one of the twentieth century's most fascinating rulers.

A Reed Shaken by the Wind : Travels Among the Marsh Arabs of Iraq Gavin Maxwell Eland Publishing Ltd, Bookwire GmbH, London, 2015
The Marsh Arabs were one of the most isolated communities in the world. Few outsiders, let alone Europeans, had been permitted to travel through their homeland, a mass of tiny islands lost in a wilderness of reeds and swamps in southern Iraq. One of the few trusted outsiders was the legendary explorer Wilfred Thesiger, who was Gavin Maxwell's guide to the intricate landscape, tribal customs and distinctive architecture of the Marsh Arabs. Thesiger's skill with a medicine chest and rifle assured them a welcome in every hamlet, and Maxwell's sharp observation, honed as a naturalist and writer, has left an invaluable record of a unique community and a now-vanished way of life.

92 Acharnon Street : A Year in Athens John Lucas Eland Publishing Ltd, Bookwire GmbH, London, 2012
Greece has always had its admirers, though none seems to have cherished the Athenian tavernas, the murderous traffic and the jaded prostitutes, the petty bureaucratic tyrannies, the street noise and the heroic individualists with the irony and detachment of John Lucas. '92 Acharnon Street' is a gritty portrait of a dirty city and a wayward country. Yet Lucas' love for the realities of Greece triumphs- for the Homeric kindness of her people towards strangers, for the pleasures of her table and for the proximity of islands in clear blue water as a refuge from the noise and pollution of her capital city. This is Greece as the Greeks would recognise it, seen through the eyes of a poet.

SMELLING THE BREEZES : a journey through the high lebanon in 1957 RALPH. IZZARD IZZARD (MOLLY.); Molly Izzard Eland Publishing Limited, Eland classics, S.l, 2022
Smelling the Breezes is an inspiring family adventure, a three-hundred-mile walk down the spine of the Lebanon with four children, two donkeys and Elias, the family's gardener, nursemaid and friend. The journey took them over towering passes, through immense gorges and into the lives of mountain villages and highland herdsmen. The presence of four small but redoubtable blonde children proved a passport at every door, whatever the politics, religion or ethnicity of the household. Smelling the Breezes is a magnificent portrait of Lebanon in all its rich complexity and easy charm: broken castles, hashish smugglers, clan feuds, festivals, forgotten temples, secretive headquarters and hospitable sheikhs.

Fanny Parkes lived in India between 1822 and 1846 and was the ideal travel writer – courageous, indefatigably curious and determinedly independent. Her journals trace her transformation from prim memsahib to eccentric, sitar-playing Indophile, fluent in Urdu, critical of British rule and passionate in her appreciation of Indian culture. Fanny is fascinated by the trial of thugs, the adorning of a Hindu bride and swears by the efficacy of opium on headaches. To read her is to get as close as one can to a true picture of early colonial India – the sacred and the profane, the violent and the beautiful, the straight-laced sahibs and the ‘White Mughals’ who fell in love with India, married Indian wives and built bridges between the two cultures.

Travels in a dervish cloak Wilkinson, Isambard, author, Wilkinson, Chev, photographer London : Eland, England, 2017
240 pages, 16 unnumbered pages of plates : 23 cm, \"Since 9/11 the reader has been inundated with academic volumes about radical Islam, the geo-political alliances of Pakistan and the identity of the Taliban. What has been lacking is Travels in a Dervish Cloak, an affectionate, hashish-scented travel book, full of humour and delight, written by a young Irish foreign correspondent living on his wits, on the contacts from his grandmother s address book and with a kidney given to him by his brother. Others might have conserved this gift of a life-saving kidney by living a sober and quiet life, but it had the opposite affect on Isambard Wilkinson, who took to the adventurous life of a Daily Telegraph foreign correspondent like a cat assured of nine lives. His rich and wonderfully intimate picture of Pakistan describes the country in all its exuberant, colourful, contemporary glory. It s a place where past empires, be they Mughal or Raj, continue to shine like old gold beneath the chaotic jigsaw of Baluch, Punjabi, Sindi and Pashtun peoples, not to mention warlords, hereditary saints, bandit landlords, smugglers and party-mad socialites. The only way to understand the contradictions is to plunge into the riot of differences, and to come out grinning.\"--Publisher's description, Includes index

For love & money : writing, reading, travelling, 1967-1987 Raban, Jonathan Eland Publishing Limited, La Vergne, 2018
This collection of writing, undertaken for love and for money, is largely about books, writers and travel. It is an engrossing and candid exploration of what it means to make a living from words. Jonathan Raban weighs up the advantages of maintaining an independent spirit against problems of insolvency and self-worth, confesses to travel as an escape from the blank page, ponders the true art of the book review, admires the role of the literary editor and remembers with affection and hilarity events from his eccentric life at the heart of literary London. Reading it is like eavesdropping on a humane, rigorous and witty conversation.

The Innocent Anthropologist : Notes From a Mud Hut Nigel Barley Eland Publishing Limited, Bookwire GmbH, London, 2012
Nigel Barley was a ‘new anthropologist', one of the younger generation of academics whose learning and research had been acquired in institutes, research departments, from academic journals and university libraries. But after suffering years of gentle put-downs from leathery old field-workers, their ‘teeth permanently gritted from years of dealing with natives', he was determined to gain his own experience. The two years he spent among the Dowayo people in the Cameroons (1978-80) produced a comic masterpiece of travel writing, The Innocent Anthropologist, which remains as honest, as funny and as compelling a read as when it was first penned – and a devastating critique of academics attempting to impose their rules and their order on West African life

Warriors : Life and Death Among the Somalis Hanley, Gerald; Hartley, Aidan; Hone, Joseph Eland Publishing Limited, Bookwire GmbH, London, 2012
"Somalia is one of the world's most desolate, sun-scorched lands, inhabited by fierce and independent-minded tribesmen. It was here that Gerald Hanley spent the Second World War, charged with preventing bloodshed between feuding tribes at a remote out-station. Rations were scarce, pay infrequent and his detachment of native soldiers near-mutinous.". "In these extreme conditions seven British officers committed suicide, but Hanley describes the period as the 'most valuable time' of his life. With intense curiosity and open-mindedness, he explores the effects of loneliness. He comes to understand the Somalis' love of fighting and to admire their contempt for death. 'Of all the races of Africa,' he says, 'there cannot be one better to live among than the most difficult, the proudest, the bravest, the vainest, the most merciless, the friendliest: the Somalis.'"--BOOK JACKET.

The island that dared : journeys in Cuba Murphy, Dervla Eland Publishing Limited, 2009
Take a three-generation family holiday in Cuba in the company of Dervla Murphy, her daughter and three young granddaughters and you have a Swallows-and-Amazons-like adventure in the Caribbean as they trek into the hills and along the coast as a family, camping out on empty beaches beneath the stars and relishing the ubiquitous Cuban hospitality. But this is no more than the joyful start of a fully-fledged quest to understand the unique society created by the Cuban Revolution. For Dervla returns alone to explore the mountains, coastal swamps and decaying cities, investigating the experience of modern Cuba with her particular, candid curiosity. Through her own research and through conversations with Fidelistas and their critics alike, The Island That Dared builds a complex picture of a people struggling to retain their identity in the face of the insistent hostility of the government of the United States.words : 168359

Through the Embers of Chaos : Balkan Journeys Dervla Murphy Eland Publishing Ltd, La Vergne, 2017
As Dervla Murphy crisscrossed the Balkans in a series of bicycle journeys towards the beginning and end of the 1990s, she recorded the griefs and confusions of the ordinary people, many of whom had showed extraordinary courage and resilience during that terrible ‘decade of decay’ and whose voices were so little heard during the conflict. Despite their suffering, she found plenty of traditional Balkan hospitality and was passed between friends from city to city and town to town. Through the Embers of Chaos describes journeys – through Croatia, Servia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo and Albania – that demanded the greatest emotional and physical stamina, while also elucidating the complex history of the both the region and the conflict itself. It’s an extraordinary achievement.

One foot in Laos Dervla Murphy Eland Publishing Ltd, London, [England, 2017
Laos, caught in the middle of the Vietnam War, is one of the most heavily bombed countries in world history. It’s where Dervla Murphy’s ‘inner-click’ sends her in 1997, when the country had just opened its borders to the West. Her three-month trek is threatened by torn ligaments in her foot, but she makes no concessions to injury as she limps down drug-baron’s trails and careers through gorges on a bike without brakes. She discovers Laos to be rich in ritual and culture, with a precious eco-system and a wealth of subsistence farming, and a people who are both kind and gentle. Yet the persistent problems bequeathed by the country’s recent past are not yet behind them.

Hermit of Peking : the hidden life of Sir Edmund Backhouse Trevor-Roper, Hugh R. Eland & Sickle Moon Books, London, England, 1993
The trail of discovery began when Hugh Trevor-Roper received in somewhat unusual circumstances the voluminous memoirs of Sir Edmund Backhouse, the celebrated Chinese scholar and co-author of two standard works on Chinese history. The memoirs describe a very different person from the one who had apparently lived such a respectable life until his death in 1944. Backhouse claimed that he had been intimate with many notable characters including Verlaine and Lord Rosebery, and that his many lovers (of both sexes) had included the Dowager Empress of China. It gradually became clear that the detailed, plausible and very obscene memoirs were a work of fantasy - yet a fantasy interwoven with detailed fact. Intrigued, Hugh Trevor-Roper set out to discover as much as he could about Sir Edmund Backhouse, and unearthed the story of one of the most outrageous confidence tricksters of this century.ISBN : 9780907871323

Jigsaw : an unsentimaental education : a biographical novel Bedford, Sybille Eland Publishing Limited, Booker Prize Shortlist, 2012
Sybille Bedford’s evocative semi-autobiographical novel walks the fine line between memory and fiction as it recreates a lost time and place."Her writing is like the conversation of a clever, worldly friend who we wish would come by more often." - Joan Acocella, The New YorkerJigsaw is set in the limbo between world wars. The narrator, Billi, tells the story of her scholar-gipsy childhood and of her many teachers, beginning with her father, a pleasure-loving German baron, and her brilliant, beautiful, erratic mother. Later, on the Mediterranean coast of France, she meets the artists and intellectuals who will show her the way to a life’s work in literature, among them Aldous and Maria Huxley."To read Bedford’s work is to bask in the presence of someone at once German, French, and English—at the very least—who knew these countries from deep within herself and was able to enjoy their distinctions without ever belittling or simplifying them. If the word cosmopolitan had been coined with a particular literary figure in mind, it might have been Sybille Bedford." - Sylvia Brownrigg, The Paris ReviewSybille Bedford published her first book, The Sudden View: A Mexican Journey, in 1953. A Legacy appeared in 1956, and three other novels followed: A Favourite of the Gods (1963), A Compass Error (1968) and Jigsaw (1989), which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. The Best We Can Do (1958), an account of the murder trial of Dr John Bodkin Adams, was the first of Bedford’s writings on law at work. The Faces of Justice (1961) collected her observations on the courts in England, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France, followed by As It Was (1990).

The Way of the World : Two Men in a Car From Geneva to the Khyber Pass Bouvier, Nicolas;Vernet, Thierry;Marsack, Robyn Eland Publishing Limited, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 1), New York, 2011
In 1953, twenty-four-year old Nicolas Bouvier and his artist friend Thierry Vernet set out to make their way overland from their native Geneva to the Khyber Pass. They had money to last them a few months and a Fiat to take them where they were going, but above all they were equipped with the certainty that by hook or by crook they would reach their destination, and that there would be unanticipated adventures, curious companionship, and sudden illumination along the way. They were not disappointed, and neither will be readers of this luminous travel book fashioned from Bouvier's journals. The two friends support themselves by writing and painting in Istanbul; are spellbound by the brilliance of winter in Tabriz; take a side trip to rebellious Kurdistan; and find ever more ingenious ways to keep their increasingly battered vehicle on the road as they head to Afghanistan. Along the way, they spend wild nights listening to Gypsy musicians, trading poetry with tramps, and entertaining their companions with song and an accordion. The Way of the World, a cult classic, is the beguiling tale of an impecunious and life-enhancing journey from Geneva to the Khyber Pass in the '50s. When Nicolas Bouvier and the artist Thierry Vernet set out, they had money for four months and a sturdy Fiat Topolino. They broke their journey when money ran low, to teach and sell paintings and articles in Istanbul, Tabriz and eventually in Quetta. Gravitating towards the poorer neighbourhoods, they spent intoxicating nights listening to gypsy musicians, trading poetry with Iranian tramps and entertaining their fellow drinkers with songs and an accordion. The Way of the World is also a journey towards the self. 'You think you are making a trip,' writes Bouvier, 'but soon it is making you - or unmaking you.'

Golden Earth : Travels in Burma Lewis, Norman Eland Publishing Limited, Bookwire GmbH, New York, 2011
Despite communist incursions and tribal insurrection, Norman Lewis describes a land of breathtaking natural beauty peopled by the gentle Burmese. This is a country where Buddhist belief spares even the rats, where the Director of Prisons quotes Chaucer and where three-day theatrical shows are staged to celebrate a monk taking orders. Hitching lifts with the army and travelling merchants, Lewis is treated to hospitality wherever he stops in this war-torn land, and reveals a country where 'the condition of the soul replaces that of the stock market as a topic for polite conversation'.

Voices of the Old Sea Lewis, Norman Carroll & Graf Publishers, 1984
In the late 1940s, Norman Lewis settled in a remote fishing village on what is now the Costa Brava, relishing a society where men regulated their lives by the sardine shoals of spring and autumn and the tuna fishing of summer, and where women kept goats and gardens, arranged marriages and made frugal ends meet. Over the course of three years he watches with sorrow and affection as the villagers struggle to hang on to a way of life unchanged for centuries. How long can their precarious economy, their ancient feuds and traditions ? not least the evenings of impromptu blank verse in the bar ? hold out against the encroaching tide of package tourism, which sidles insidiously into the village with the arrival of black-marketeer Muga?words : 81910

A Month by the Sea : Encounters in Gaza Dervla Murphy Eland Publishing Limited, Bookwire GmbH, London, 2013
Over the summer of 2011, Dervla Murphy spent a month in the Gaza Strip. She met liberals and Islamists, Hamas and Fatah supporters, rich and poor. Through reported conversations she creates a vivid picture of life in this coastal fragment of self-governing Palestine. Bombed and cut-off from normal contact with the rest of the world, life in Gaza is beset with structural, medical and mental health problems, yet it is also bursting with political engagement and underwritten by an intense enjoyment of family life. During her month by the sea, Dervla develops an acute eye for the way in which isolation has shaped this society. Time and again she meets men who have returned to the Strip as an act of presence. Yet the mosque is often their only daily activity, as difficulties obtaining supplies mean few opportunities for creative work. This acts as a recruiting sergeant for the Islamist Qassam brigades and a pressure cooker for the creation of domestic tyrants. In this situation, Dervla becomes a shameless supporter of women's rights -acting as agony aunt and feminist mentor by turn. The ironies of Western and Israeli attitudes to the Strip are ever present: most notably the championing of democracy yet the refusal to recognize the legitimacy of Hamas; and the way in which violent attempts to eradicate terrorism breathe life into the very monster they aspire to destroy. Even so, there is a still, small note of hope. For underlying the book is Dervla's determination to try to understand how Arab Palestinians and Israeli Jews might forge a solution and ultimately live in peace.

Birds of Passage : Henrietta Clive's Travels in South India 1798-1801 Henrietta Clive Eland Publishing Limited, Bookwire GmbH, London, 2012
The journals of Lady Henrietta Clive, a feisty, independent-minded traveller, are among the very earliest written accounts of India by a British woman. Married to Lord Edward Clive, son of Clive of India and Governor of Madras (1798–1803), she travelled through southern India with her daughters and retinue in the aftermath of the war against Tipu Sultan. In this their first publication, Nancy K Shields skillfully interweaves extracts from the journals with passages from the diary of Charly, Henrietta’s precocious twelve-year-old daughter, who went on to tutor the future Queen Victoria, first Empress of India. She also includes extracts from Henrietta’s impassioned correspondence with her beloved, Byronic brother, the rakish George Herbert, Earl of Powis, beside whom Edward Clive appears to have been a very dull spouse. Birds of Passage is important as an historical and as a social document, and also as an early female travel text.

Among the Faithful is a unique portrait of traditional Tunisian society. It tells of barefoot pilgrims and bedouin, the deflowering of virgin brides, spirit possession and dances held for djinn. It sings the praises of the unsung: Eltifa the blind musician, Zinibe (who had a heart for all the world) and the entrancing, dancing Aisha. Dahris Martin witnessed domestic life in Tunisia from within, a privilege she shares without pretension, with affection and with a sure lightness of touch.words : 69311

When British anthropologist Nigel Barley set up home among the Dowayo people in northern Cameroon, he knew how fieldwork should be conducted. Unfortunately, nobody had told the Dowayo. His compulsive, witty account of first fieldwork offers a wonderfully inspiring introduction to the real life of a cultural anthropologist doing research in a Third World area. Both touching and hilarious, Barley's unconventional story—in which he survived boredom, hostility, disaster, and illness—addresses many critical issues in anthropology and in fieldwork.Wörter : 72257

A Year in Marrakesh Peter Mayne Eland Publishing Ltd, London, 2002, cop. 1953
Having learned to appreciate Muslim life while living in Pakistan, Peter Mayne settled down to live in the back streets of Marrakesh in the 1950s. Rather than watch from the shelter of a hotel terrace, he rented rooms, learned the language, made friends, and became embroiled in conspiratorial picnics, hashish-laced dinners and in the enchantments and misunderstandings of the street, with its festivals, love affairs, potions and gossip. By turns used, abused and cherished by his neighbours, Mayne wrote their letters for them and captured the essence of their lives in this affectionate and hilarious acount.Review"captures the very essence of people and place" Yorkshire Post About the AuthorPeter Mayne was born in England in 1908. At the age of twenty he went out to India, where his father was a serior member of the Department of Education. For a while he worked as a mercantile assistant in a firm of merchant-shippers, but he was never a successful businessman. At the time of Partition, the Pakistan Government invited him to serve as Deputy Secretary to the Ministry of Refugees and Rehabilitation. When the tension died down, he resigned from government service and settled in Morocco to write his first book. He died in 1979.

Irfan Orga was born into a prosperous family in the twilight of the Ottoman Empire. His mother was a beauty, married at thirteen, who lived in the seclusion of a harem, as befitted a Turkish woman of her class. His grandmother was an eccentric autocrat, determined at all costs to maintain her traditional habits. But the First World War changed everything. Death and financial disaster reigned, the Sultan was overthrown and Turkey became a republic. The family was forced to adapt to an unimaginably impoverished life.
