First published in 1970 to a chorus of critical acclaim, <b><i>A Dictionary of British Folk-Tales in the English Language</i></b> is now regarded as a classic in folklore scholarship. Arranged in two parts, the dictionary presents folk narratives--tales told for edification or delight--as well as folk legends--tales believed by the tellers to be records of actual events. <br>

The first part, <i>Folk Narratives,</i> is divided into five sections: Fables and Exempla, Fairy Tales, Jocular Tales, Novelle, and Nursery Tales. The second part, <i>Folk Legends,</i> explores the legendary figures of black dogs, bogies, devils, dragons, fairies, ghosts, giants, as well as historical and local legends, origin myths, saints, the supernatural, and witches.<br>

Each part of <b><i>A Dictionary of British Folk-Tales in</i></b> <b><i>the English Language</i></b> contains a bibliography, a source, a tale-type or classified index, and an index of story titles, which make it the ideal reference for folklorists and historians.
