戴鴻超是將李志綏的英文定稿翻譯成中文的唯一譯者。他表示,該書初稿譯成英文后,拖延了三年多才出版,其中主要原因,是美國出版公司對譯稿內容作了增補,以便使回憶錄更吸引人。增補的主要部份,是對原稿中毛澤東私生活的色情部份增加了渲染和注解。并增添了李志綏的身世和他本人的見解但文稿譯成英文后,出版公司對色情部份增加了多處渲染和注解。例如該書英文版三百五十八頁,有關于道家“素女經”中“采陰補陽”的說法,以及毛澤東与女人睡覺的情節,并加了注解。而這些內容原稿中并沒有見到。因此,回憶錄的中、英文版存在多處不同。戴鴻超說,出版過程也与眾不同,出版商是藍燈公司(Ramdom House),雖然李志綏原稿是中文,但他從英文版翻譯過來的中文版才算原版,版權由出版商買進,屬于出版公司,而此后該書的日、西、德文版本,都是依照英文版翻譯過去,目前看到的中文版即從英文版翻譯回來的版本。 他說,根据版權合約,出版商對書稿的增刪改動,譯成其他文字擁有最后決定權。初稿譯成英文后,藍燈出版公司的一名助理編輯利用三年半的時間,對李志綏多次訪問,并對英文書稿進行多處增補,渲染和改動,其中對色情部份渲染最多。李志綏曾與其意見不一,發生爭執,以致最后鬧僵,兩人互不講話。但最終仍由出版商拍板決定。

From 1954 until Mao Zedong's death twenty-two years later, Dr. Li Zhisui was the Chinese ruler's personal physician, which put him in almost daily - and increasingly intimate - contact with Mao and his inner circle. For most of these years, Mao's health was excellent; thus he and the doctor had time to discuss political and personal matters. Dr. Li recorded many of these conversations in his diaries as well as in his memory.
