<p><P>What will the city of the future look like? Advanced research and international cooperation, as presented here, have analyzed the problems (urban air and water pollution, waste treatment, illumination) and are offering new ways to solve them. The city in general can be considered on the basis of two models - Sociopolis vs. Technopolis - and these are discussed in terms of their impact on illumination, transportation, efficient energy use, creation of a Network of Integrated Urban Energy Planning. Environmental protection is discussed in terms of clean air, water policy, war on waste and environmental education. R&D for city dwellers focuses on lasers in industry and medicine, solar cars, solar roofs for houses, new food and perfumery additives. The book presents the results of applications and recommendations for the sustainable development of a city and its inhabitants, not only in terms of theoretical ideas but also in terms of facts, with examples and results summarised in tables and illustrated by figures. Remedies are proposed for some of the issues discussed. <br> Audience&#58; Researchers, city managers, business persons and all those interested in, and concerned about, tackling and solving the problems of cities and their human population.</p><h3>Booknews</h3><p>Various specialists from Europe and North America present 26 papers on advanced research into sustainable development, focusing on urban environments. The topics include the sociopolis strategy for municipal management, improving energy efficiency in buildings, technogenic safety problems, information systems for wide international cooperation between cities and countries, achievements in using ozone technologies for treating polluted water in densely populated areas, methods for promoting the application of alternative energies to improve the quality of city life, environmental education, photonic achievements, transport problems, science policy and technology transfer in Azerbaijan, and systems analysis in managing contemporary urban life. This volume features the proceedings of the NATO AR Workshop held in Kishinev, the capital of Moldova, a fom1er Soviet Republic in the South­ Eastern Europe. OUiing 3 working days 26 reports were presented, 8 of them by, or in collaboration with, speakers from Kishinev. The reports arc presented in the order they were given at the Workshop. As the topic was rather wide-ranged, all the sittings were plenmy. The opening communication was made by the Mayor of Kishinev S. Urckian, who was the Chainnan of the Organizing Committee. It was followed by other reports of general orientation. The second half of the first day was devoted to the research results and problems of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. On the second day the Workshop was hosted by the Technical University of Moldova. At the beginning, the ceremonial sitting of its Scientific Council took place, at which two scientists were made doctors Honoris Causa of that University: Prof. K. Frolov from Russia and Prof. G.Parissakis from Greece. Then the plenary sessions continued. The round-table talk, held in the second half of the last day, appeared to be very fruitful. A relaxed and friendly atmosphere of it was appropriate for establishing closer contacts and discussing problems of mutual interest for scientists, ingineers, managerial heads and officers and businessmen.
