Evolution and Consciousness : a From a Barren Rocky Earth to Artists, Philosophers, Meditators and Psychotherapists Michael (Michelo) DelMonte and Maeve Halpin Brill | Rodopi, Brill Academic Publishers, Leiden, 2019
This volume provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the emerging concept of the evolution of consciousness. The simple, but dynamic, theory of evolving consciousness blends the powerful insights of modern science with the deep wisdom of age-old cultures, synthesising the traditions of East and West, of the head and heart, of the feminine and the masculine and of science and spirituality. By integrating diverse multi-disciplinary approaches, it provides an overarching and transcending model that moves us to a new level of meaning and understanding of our place in the world. An appreciation of the evolution of consciousness can deepen our connection to ourselves, to others and to the natural world, while bringing a new dimension to the work of psychotherapy.

Club Government: How the Early Victorian World was Ruled from London Clubs (International Library of Colonial History) Seth Alexander Thévoz I.B. Tauris; Bloomsbury, Bloomsbury UK, London, 2018
The book phenomenon of ‘Club Government’ in the mid-nineteenth century, when many of the functions of government were alleged to have taken place behind closed doors, in the secretive clubs of London’s St. James’s district, has not been adequately historicized. Despite ‘Club Government’ being referenced in most major political histories of the period, it is a topic which has never before enjoyed a full-length study. Making use of previously-sealed club archives, and adopting a broad range of analytical techniques, this work of political history, social history, sociology and quantitative approaches to history seeks to deepen our understanding of the distinctive and novel ways in which British political culture evolved in this period. The book concludes that historians have hugely underestimated the extent of club influence on ‘high politics’ in Westminster, and though the reputation of clubs for intervening in elections was exaggerated, the culture and secrecy involved in gentleman’s clubs had a huge impact on Britain and the British Empire. ** About the Author Seth Alexander Thévoz is an Associate Member of Nuffield College, Oxford, where he is a research assistant on the forthcoming official biography of Sir David Butler. He holds degrees from the universities of Cambridge, London and Warwick, and he completed his PhD in conjunction with the History of Parliament Trust. A former parliamentary researcher, his areas of expertise include the history of British politicians’ outside financial interests, and the history of party political funding. upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/Berkshire Encyclopedia of World History, V - Jerry H. Bentley.pdf
Berkshire Encyclopedia of World History, Vol. 3: Global Migrations in Modern Times-Mysticism William H. McNeill, senior editor; Jerry H. Bentley ... [et al.], editors Berkshire Publishing Group, Gale virtual reference library, Great Barrington, Mass., U.S.A, ©2005
The "Berkshire Encyclopedia of World History" is the first true encyclopedic reference on world history. It is designed to meet the needs of students, teachers, and scholars who seek to explore and understand the panorama of our shared human history. The encyclopedia takes a dynamic world history perspective, showing connections, interactions, and chage over time and place. Major articles by leading scholars from around the world examine essential themes and patterns such as Art, Disease, Government, Religion, Science, and War and Peace, with hundreds of articles on processes, movements, places, events, and people. Students and teachers at the high school and college levels turn to this definitive work for a connected view of world history--the story of humans and their place in the universe. From School Library Journal Grade 10 Up–Although the 538 articles in this set are arranged alphabetically, the approach is thematic, with entries and sidebars "showing connections and interactions, through trade, warfare, migration, religion, and diplomacy over time and place." Volume one opens with an overview of human history that serves as a guide to the Encyclopedia , and alphabetic and thematic lists of the entries appear in each book. Much prehistory is treated in this work, which bills itself as covering "250,000 years of human existence." However, readers may wonder why some subjects were included, or even given their own entry, and others weren't. For example, there is no entry for the Peloponnesian Wars, but the extensive index will lead students to information under entries for "Greece, Ancient," "International Organizations," "Oral History," "Thucydides," "Warfare, Naval," and "Engines of History." This last is an example of the somewhat obscure and/or unusual headings that sometimes appear. An up-to-date bibliography follows every article. The black-and-white photos are of uneven quality; many lack sufficient contrast. The maps included are insufficient to clarify the discussions of empires, countries, wars, and movements of peoples. This set would be useful as a supplement to general encyclopedias. –David Pauli, Hillsboro Public Library, OR Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From Booklist Starred Review A masterful title that weaves together the social, scientific, anthropological, and geographical influences on world history, this set will be the benchmark against which future history encyclopedias are compared. Featuring 538 articles by 330 scholars representing multiple disciplines, the title adroitly pulls together the major societies ( Mongol Empire, Sumerian society ); political movements ( Revolution--Cuba; Women's emancipation movements ); and, indeed, the traditionally studied wars ( World War I ) that have shaped the world we live in, all while remaining cognizant of how each has had an impact on the other. The academic credentials of the editors are impeccable. Senior editor McNeill has written dozens of respected texts and was winner of the National Book Award in 1964 for The Rise of the West . Although attempting to cover as broad a subject as world history in five volumes seems impossible, the editors and their contributors have pulled the feat off with aplomb. No article runs more than approximately 10 pages, but each captures the essence of the topic being addressed, as well as the distinct style of the contributor. Cross-references are noted at the end of most entries, and the lists of further reading contain contemporary works. Primary source material is not left out, however; more than 500 sidebars featuring quoted material often use primary sources. The entry Babylon , for example, includes some text from the Code of Hammurabi. Each volume opens with a "Reader's Guide" listing 34 subject categories, allowing users to concentrate on articles dealing with, for example, topics related to "Communication" or "Health and Disease." The first volume also features "This Fleeting World," a 56-page essay by David Christian covering the foraging, agrarian, and modern eras of history. Oddly, this essay is repeated in volume 5 (and may also be found in its entirety on the publisher's Web site [http://www.berkshirepublishing.com/assets/pdf/ThisFleetingWorld.pdf]). With relatively few entries, not everyone will agree with what is included. In a set that features but 110 biographical entries, should there really be one devoted to American abolitionist and author Lydia Child? Do Bullroarers deserve a separate entry? In keeping with the philosophy of the set, however, there are nine entries in a row on trading--beginning with Trading patterns, ancient America --that discuss commerce among the people of various regions. Accompanying the text are numerous black-and-white illustrations and more than 50 maps, most of them excellent line-drawn maps created for the set. There are a few minor errors in cross-referencing and indexing. As McNeill states in his preface, the encyclopedia is "designed to help both beginners and experts to sample the best contemporary efforts to make sense of the human past by connecting particular and local histories with larger patterns of world history." The encyclopedia succeeds admirably and belongs on the shelves of all high-school, public, and academic libraries. In short: buy it. Now. Ken Black Copyright © American Library Association. Of Gardens: Selected Essays (Penn Studies in Landscape Architecture) Paula Deitz University of Pennsylvania Press, Inc., Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 2), Philadelphia, 2011
Paula Deitz has delighted readers for more than thirty years with her vivid descriptions of both famous and hidden landscapes. Her writings allow readers to share in the experience of her extensive travels, from the waterways of Britain's Castle Howard to the Japanese gardens of Kyoto, and home again to New York City's Central Park. Collected for the first time, the essays in Of Gardens record her great adventure of continual discovery, not only of the artful beauty of individual gardens but also of the intellectual and historical threads that weave them into patterns of civilization, from the modest garden for family subsistence to major urban developments. Deitz's essays describe how people, over many centuries and in many lands, have expressed their originality by devoting themselves to cultivation and conservation. During a visit to the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden in Seal Harbor, Maine, Deitz first came to appreciate the notion that landscape architecture can be as intricately conceived as any major structure and is, indeed, the means by which we redeem the natural environment through design. Years later, as she wandered through the gardens of Versailles, she realized that because gardens give structure without confinement, they encourage a liberation of movement and thought. In Of Gardens , we follow Deitz down paths of revelation, viewing "A Bouquet of British Parks: Liverpool, Edinburgh, and London"; the parks and promenades of Jerusalem; the Moonlight Garden of the Taj Mahal; a Tuscan-style villa in southern California; and the rooftop garden at Tokyo's Mori Center, among many other sites. Deitz covers individual landscape architects and designers, including André Le Nôtre, Frederick Law Olmsted, Beatrix Farrand, Russell Page, and Michael Van Valkenburgh. She then features an array of parks, public places, and gardens before turning her attention to the burgeoning business of flower shows. The volume concludes with a memorable poetic epilogue entitled "A Winter Garden of Yellow." **

Jawbreaker's 24 hour revenge therapy: (or, the strange death of selling out) Givony, Ronen Bloomsbury Academic, Bloomsbury Publishing Inc, 33 1/3 -- 130, 33 1/3 -- 130., New York State, 2018
Two and a half decades on, Jawbreaker's 24 Hour Revenge Therapy (1993-94) is the rare album to have lost none of its original loyalty, affection, and reverence. If anything, today, the cult of Jawbreaker-in their own words, "the little band that could but would probably rather not"-is now many times greater than it was when they broke up in 1996. Like the best work of Fugazi, The Clash, and Operation Ivy, the album is now is a rite of passage and a beloved classic among partisans of intelligent, committed, literary punk music and poetry. Why, when a thousand other artists came and went in that confounding decade of the 90s, did Jawbreaker somehow come to seem like more than just another band? Why do they persist, today, in meaning so much to so many people? And how did it happen that, two years after releasing their masterpiece, the band that was somehow more than just a band to its fans-closer to equipment for living-was no longer? Ronen Givony's 24 Hour Revenge Therapy is an extended tribute in the spirit of Nicholson Baker's U & I : a passionate, highly personal, and occasionally obsessive study of one of the great confessional rock albums of the 90s. At the same time, it offers a quizzical look back to the toxic authenticity battles of the decade, ponders what happened to the question of "selling out," and asks whether we today are enriched or impoverished by that debate becoming obsolete. ** About the Author Ronen Givony is the founder/producer of New York's Wordless Music series and orchestra (wordlessmusic.org), which has presented concerts around the world with artists from the sound worlds of so-called classical and contemporary music since 2006, and was named by the Village Voice as New York's "Best Moderately Snooty Concert Series." upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/Schizoanalysis and Animal Scien - Helena Pedersen.epub
Schizoanalysis and Animal Science Education Helena Pedersen; Bloomsbury UK, Bloomsbury UK, London, UK, 2019
Within the education system, acts of violence toward animals take place and are manifested on a routine basis in science classes, in lecture halls, in school canteens, and during study visits to zoos, farms, and slaughterhouses. Taken for granted as ”necessary” for teaching and learning, this violence profoundly affects animals as well as students. It also provides new entry points for understanding education as a multispecies power regime, driven by numerous other investments than knowledge dissemination alone. What, then, is the nature of this educational violence, and how exactly does education work through techniques of interference with student and animal bodies? Based on ethnographic research within upper secondary schools and higher education, this book challenges the use of animals in education by innovative engagement of Deleuze and Guattari's tool of schizoanalysis. Sparking a fundamental rethinking of educational processes, relations, and aims, the book explores how scientific knowledge about animals proliferates through complex interplay of power and desire in contested spaces of teaching and learning. Configuring animal science education as a set of machines working in tandem with the animal industry, Helena Pedersen offers radical new insights into how education forms subjectivities and social orders under conditions of capitalist expansion that capture students and animals alike. Bringing together education studies, science studies, critical animal studies, and continental philosophy, Pedersen also provides examples of disruptive action that can put education to work for transformation and liberation. ** About the Author Helena Pedersen is Associate Professor of Education at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and the author of Animals in Schools (2010).* *

Flower of the Desert : Giacomo Leopardi's Poetic Ontology Antonio Negri; translated by Timothy S. Murphy State University of New York Press (SUNY Press), State University of New York Press, Albany, 2015
A profound meditation on Leopardi’s art and thought as well as a reframing and reassertion of Negri’s own philosophical and political project of liberation.Antonio Negri, one of Italy’s most influential and controversial contemporary philosophers, offers in this book a radical new interpretation of the nineteenth-century Italian poet Giacomo Leopardi. For Negri, Leopardi is not the bitter, idealistic individualist of conventional literary history, but rather a profoundly materialist thinker who sees human solidarity as the only possible solution to the catastrophes of history and politics. Negri traces Leopardi’s resistance to the transcendental idealism of Kant and Hegel, with its emphasis on reason’s power to resolve real antagonisms into abstract syntheses, and his gradual development of a sophisticated poetic materialism focused on the constructive power of the imagination and its “true illusions.” Like Nietzsche (who admired him), Leopardi provides an alternative to modernity within modernity, expressing a force of rupture and recomposition—a uniquely Italian one—that is as relevant now as it was in the nineteenth century, and which connects to the theory of Empire as the political constitution of the present that Negri has elaborated in collaboration with Michael Hardt.

Mixed Messages : American Correspondences in Visual and Verbal Practices Catherine Gander; Sarah Garland Manchester University Press, Manchester University Press, Manchester, 2016
Offering a major contribution to the field of American culture and aesthetics in an interdisciplinary frame, this collection assembles the cutting-edge research of renowned and emerging scholars in literature and the visual arts, with a foreword by Miles Orvell. The volume represents the first of its kind: an intervention in current interdisciplinary approaches to the intersections of the written word and the visual image that moves beyond standard theoretical approaches to consider the written and visual artwork in embodied, cognitive and experiential terms. Tracing a strong lineage of pragmatism, romanticism, surrealism and dada in American intermedial works through the nineteenth century to the present day, the editors and authors of this volume chart a new and vital methodology for the study and appreciation of the correspondences between visual and verbal practices. ** Review "Mixed Messages offers a set of case studies which reappraise old American masters (the likes of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Walt Whitman, and William Carlos Williams) to provoke new, enterprising understandings of artworks that press into service textual and visual features." - Matthew Holman, Oxford Art Journal, Volume 40, Issue 2 About the Author Catherine Gander is Lecturer in American Literature and Visual Culture at Queen's University Belfast Sarah Garland is Lecturer in American Literature and Visual Culture at the University of East Anglia History Art Contemporary (1945-) Cover 1 Mixed messages 2 Contents 8 List of figures 10 List of contributors 14 Foreword by Miles Orvell 18 Acknowledgements 21 Introduction: to fasten words again to visible – and invisible – things: Catherine Gander and Sarah Garland 22 1 A poetics of organic expression: Louis Sullivan’s transcendentalist legacy in word and image: Lauren S. The Death of a Beekeeper: Novel Lars Gustafsson; translated from the Swedish by Janet K. Swaffar and Guntram H. Weber; with an afterword by Janet K. Swaffar Published for J. Laughlin by New Directions Pub. Corp., 2014;1981
The celebrated Swedish author's American debut, The Death of a Beekeeper is a gentle, courageous, and sometimes comic meditation on living with pain. In the beginning of the winter thaw, Lars Lennart Westin has learned that he has cancer and will not live through spring. Told through the journals of this schoolteacher turned apiarist, The Death of a Beekeeper, is his gentle, courageous, and sometimes comic meditation on living with pain. Westin has refused to surrender the time left him to the impersonation of a hospital, preferring to take his fate upon himself, to continue solitary, reflective life in the Swedish countryside. "I took little walks and noticed that in the last months the pain had actually colored the landscape in a peculiar way. Here and there is a tree where it really hurt, here and there is a fence against whose post I struck my hand in passing." His inner landscape is also re-forming: "This constant concern with an indefinite dangerous secret in one's own body, this feeling that some dramatic change is taking place, without one's being able to have any clarity about what really is... reminds me of prepuberty. I even recognize this gentle feeling of shame again." The relentlessly intimate burning in his gut provides a point of psychic detachment, rendering his survival "a unique art form whose level of difficulty is so high that no one exists who can practice it." Yet he insists, "We begin again. We never give up."

The History and Uncertain Future of Handwriting Anne Trubek Bloomsbury Publishing USA, New York ; London ; Oxford ; New Dehli ; Sydney, 2016
"Persuasively argues that our fixation with writing by hand is driven more by emotion than evidence, as it is perceived to be inextricably linked to our history, core values and individual identities."--Los Angeles Times The future of handwriting is anything but certain. Its history, however, shows how much it has affected culture and civilization for millennia. In the digital age of instant communication, handwriting is less necessary than ever before, and indeed fewer and fewer schoolchildren are being taught how to write in cursive. Signatures--far from John Hancock's elegant model--have become scrawls. In her recent and widely discussed and debated essays, Anne Trubek argues that the decline and even elimination of handwriting from daily life does not signal a decline in civilization, but rather the next stage in the evolution of communication. Now, in The History and Uncertain Future of Handwriting, Trubek uncovers the long and significant impact handwriting has had on culture and humanity--from the first recorded handwriting on the clay tablets of the Sumerians some four thousand years ago and the invention of the alphabet as we know it, to the rising value of handwritten manuscripts today. Each innovation over the millennia has threatened existing standards and entrenched interests: Indeed, in ancient Athens, Socrates and his followers decried the very use of handwriting, claiming memory would be destroyed; while Gutenberg's printing press ultimately overturned the livelihood of the monks who created books in the pre-printing era. And yet new methods of writing and communication have always appeared. Establishing a novel link between our deep past and emerging future, Anne Trubek offers a colorful lens through which to view our shared social experience.

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/finished/Fatal Path_ British Government - Ronan Fanning.epub
Fatal path : British government and Irish revolution, 1910-1922 Fanning, Ronan Faber & Faber, Limited, London, 2013
This is a magisterial narrative of the most turbulent decade in Anglo-Irish history: a decade of unleashed passions that came close to destroying the parliamentary system and to causing civil war in the United Kingdom. It was also the decade of the cataclysmic Great War, of an officers' mutiny in an elite cavalry regiment of the British Army and of Irish armed rebellion. It was a time, argues Ronan Fanning, when violence and the threat of violence trumped democratic politics. This is a contentious view. Historians have wished to see the events of that decade as an aberration, as an eruption of irrational bloodletting. And they have have been reluctant to write about the triumph of physical force. Fanning argues that in fact violence worked, however much this offends our contemporary moral instincts. Without resistance from the Ulster Unionists and its very real threat of violence the state of Northern Ireland would never have come into being. The Home Rule party of constitutionalist nationalists failed, and were pushed aside by the revolutionary nationalists Sinn Fein. Bleakly realistic, ruthlessly analytical of the vacillation and indecision displayed by democratic politicians at Westminster faced with such revolutionary intransigence, Fatal Path is history as it was, not as we would wish it to be. ** Review Ronan Fanning ... has crowned his career with this lapidary work. It is beautifully written, compellingly argued, gleaming with clarity as he confidently makes his way through a story of confusion, deceit and denial lightened by rare glimpses of honest men doing their best. -- James Downey Irish Independent Absorbing [and] fascinating. -- John-Paul McCarthy Sunday Independent 'In his splendid new book on Britain's Irish policy in these formative years, Ronan Fanning stresses that his topic is not Anglo-Irish relations in the round but Britain's policy towards Ireland. Yet if this is essentially a study in British history, it is also required reading for students of Irish history because of the way it illuminates our perspectives on the mode of British decision-making through which the Irish Free State and Northern Ireland emerged ... a compelling read. -- Joe Lee Irish Times This book provides valuable insights into the British government's attitude towards the Irish Revolution. -- Ryle Dwyer Irish Examiner About the Author Ronan Fanning is a Member of the Royal Irish Academy, and Professor Emeritus of Modern History at University College Dublin. Among his books are the definitive history of the Irish Department of Finance and a remarkable biography (co-written with Michael Lillis) of Eliza Lynch, wife of the 19th century Paraguayan dictator Francisco Solano Lopez. More recently, he has been one of the chief editors of the Dictionary of Irish Biography.

Conflicting Attitudes to Conversion in Judaism, Past and Present Isaac Sassoon Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), Cambridge University Press, New York, 2018
Evidence suggests that conversion originated during the Babylonian Exile. Around the same time, biological genealogy was gaining popularity, especially among priests whose legitimacy was becoming increasingly defined by 'pure' pedigree. When the biological, or ethnic, criterion is extended to the definition of Jewishness, as it seems to have been by Ezra, the possibility of conversion is all but precluded. The Rabbis did not reject the primacy of genealogy, yet were also heirs to a strong pro-conversion tradition. In this book, Isaac Sassoon confronts the tensions and paradoxes apparent in rabbinic discussions of conversion, and argues that they resulted from irresolution between the two conflicting traditions. He also contends that attitudes to conversion can impact not only one's conception of Judaism but also on one's faith, as seems to be demonstrated by authors cited in the book whose espousal of a narrowly ethnic view of Judaism allows for a nepotistic theology. ** Book Description This book is for people puzzled by the contradictory evaluations of conversion; in particular for non-experts in what is a rather recondite field. To some ancients, Jewishness was ethnic and therefore unreceptive to converts. The Rabbis embraced conversion in principle, but did not disavow the ethnic idea. This book tries to confront and unravel the resultant paradoxes and irresolution. About the Author Isaac Sassoon is Senior Lecturer (emeritus) in the Bible and Talmud at the Institute of Traditional Judaism. He is the author of several books on aspects of Judaism, most recently The Status of Women in Jewish Tradition (Cambridge, 2011).

The impossible nude: Chinese art and western aesthetics by François Jullien; translated by Maev de la Guardia; with photographs by Ralph Gibson University Of Chicago Press; University of Chicago Press, Chicago, IL, United States, 2007

The undraped human form is ubiquitous in Western art and even appears in the art of India and Japan. Only in China, François Jullien argues, is the nude completely absent. In this enthralling extended essay, he explores the different conceptions of the human body that underlie this provocative disparity.
Contrasting nakedness (which implies a diminished state) with nudity (which represents a complete presence), Jullien explores the traditional European vision of the nude as a fixed point of fusion where form joins truth. He then shows that the absence of the nude in Chinese art evinces an understanding of the human body as changeable and transitory. Viewed in light of each other, these differing concepts allow for a new way of thinking about form, the ideal, and beauty, enabling us to delve deeper into the relationship between art and the ideas that lie at its roots. Beautifully illustrated and gracefully translated into English for the first time, The Impossible Nude will fascinate anyone interested in art history, Chinese art, or aesthetics.

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/The Women of Cairo_ Scenes of Life on the - Gerard de Nerval.pdf
The Women of Cairo: Scenes of Life on the Orient, Volume 1 Nerval, Gérard De , 1808-1855 New York : AMS Press, [1982?], Repr. [d. Ausg.] London 1929, New York, 1982
The Women of Cario, Scenes of Life in the Orient is a travel book by French Romanticist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%A9rard_de_Nerval) Gerard de Nerval , first published in 1846. It describes a 1-year trip to Cairo, Egypt and other places in the Ottoman Empire. In the 18th and 19th centuries the Islamic Orient was a great mystery to Europeans giving rise to myths fueled by tales in the Arabian Nights. There were myths about the Harem, the oriental despot, the mysteries of Egypt ("Look Upon My Works, Ye Mighty, And Despair"), the stories of the Crusades, oriental virgins and slaves, etc. Romantic-era authors such as Lord Byron, Shelley, Walter Scott, Coleridge, Thomas Quincey (opium eater) and so on lived out the myth of the Orient in works and person. Nerval was central in that tradition and his journey is revealing for its myth-making and myth-busting. The first volume of this unabridged translation centers mostly on Cairo. Before leaving Europe, Nerval had been dumped by his love interest, an actress. Arriving in Egypt, Nerval begins searching for a new female companion, which legally could only be achieved through marriage. He ends up buying a slave woman who is from India, but not before going on one adventure after the next trying to find (or buy) his new mate in the warrens of Cairo. It's a fascinating look at old customs, largely hidden from public view, some of which are funny (Nerval has been compared with Charlie Chaplin) and other scenes are disturbing (the sale of pre-pubescent girls to amuse the buyers "darkest desires"). Nerval describes scenes in flowery romanticized imagery, but also dispels some myths about harems and slaves. As it turns out women have much more control over their lives, even the slave girl pushes Nerval around and balks at the idea she might be set free (a terrible fate in her mind since she would then have to actually work for a living). Other memorable scenes are climbing the Great Pyramids with the help of four Bedouins, two on top who pulled your arms and two on bottom who push upward, block after block, until you reach the top. There were no other tourists around. The Sphinx still laid mostly buried in the sand. A book filled with fascinating little details of Egypt before the modern era.

Schizoanalysis and Animal Science Education Helena Pedersen; Bloomsbury Publishing Plc ProQuest, Bloomsbury UK, London, UK, 2019

Edward IV (The English Monarchs Series) Charles Derek Ross Yale University Press, The English Monarchs, 1998
In his own time Edward IV was seen as an able and successful king who rescued England from the miseries of civil war and provided the country with firm, judicious, and popular government. The prejudices of later historians diminished this high reputation, until recent research confirmed Edward as a ruler of substantial achievement, whose methods and policies formed the foundation of early Tudor government. This classic study by Charles Ross places the reign firmly in the context of late medieval power politics, analyzing the methods by which a usurper sought to retain his throne and reassert the power of a monarchy seriously weakened by the feeble rule of Henry VI. Edward's relations with the politically active classes—the merchants, gentry, and nobility—form a major theme, and against this background Ross provides an evaluation of the many innovations in government on which the king's achievement rests.

Marx and Art (Insolubilia: New Work in Contemporary Philosophy) Alizadeh, Ali; Book Network Int'l Limited trading as NBN International (NBNi), 2012
This book argues that a renewed consideration of artistic value should both critique contemporary bureaucratic misunderstandings of what art is and address the complexities and questions of contemporary philosophers in new and provocative ways. Writer and poet Ali Alizadeh focusses on the artistic theories of the key Western philosopher of value, Karl Marx. He explores Marx’s thoughts on art and literature and provides a new account of his revolutionary view of why we make art and how we understand art’s value. By returning to Marx’s writings, from his juvenile poetry and earliest journalism to his final publications, Alizadeh proposes a theory which not only challenges many tenets of contemporary Marxist literary or cultural theory, but one which also presents us with a profound, coherent and stimulating theory of art that defines, values and demonstrates artistic practice. By mapping Marx’s intellectual development from the ideals of a young Hegelian to the polemics of a seasoned internationalist communist he shows that Marx never lost sight of art as a key aspect of human activity. Review Clearly written and refreshingly practical in its focus on what artists can do with their art, Marx and Art strips aside the cumulative weight of subsequent Marxist theorising and returns to the humanist core of the young Marx’s own work. For Alizadeh, art is neither a cultural commodity nor an ideological superstructure, but rather a model of unalienated labour. Highly recommended. (Andrew Milner, Author of Contemporary Cultural Theory, Literature. Culture and Society) About the Author Ali Alizadeh is a Senior Lecturer in Literary Studies and Creative Writing at Monash University’s School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics. His books include collections of poems, Towards the End, Ashes in the Air and Eyes in Times of War; novels, The Last Days of Jeanne d’Arc, Transactions and The New Angel; and a work of literary non-fiction, Iran, My Grandfather. This is his first philosophical monograph.

Flower of the Desert: Giacomo Leopardi's Poetic Ontology (Suny Contemporary Italian Philosophy) Antonio Negri; translated by Timothy S. Murphy State University of New York Press (SUNY Press), State University of New York Press, Albany, 2015
A profound meditation on Leopardi’s art and thought as well as a reframing and reassertion of Negri’s own philosophical and political project of liberation. Antonio Negri, one of Italy’s most influential and controversial contemporary philosophers, offers in this book a radical new interpretation of the nineteenth-century Italian poet Giacomo Leopardi.

Representations of Science in Twenty-First-Century Fiction: Human and Temporal Connectivities (Palgrave Studies in Literature, Science and Medicine) Nina Engelhardt, Julia Hoydis Springer International Publishing Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, Cham, Switzerland, 2019
This collection of essays explores current thematic and aesthetic directions in fictional science narratives in different genres, predominantly novels, but also poetry, film, and drama. The ten case studies, covering a range of British and American texts from the late twentieth to the twenty-first centuries, reflect the diversity of representations of science in contemporary fiction, including psychopharmacology and neuropathology, quantum physics and mathematics, biotechnology, genetics, and chemical weaponry. This collection considers how texts engage with science and technology to explore relations between bodies and minds, how such connectivities shape conceptions and narrations of the human, and how the speculative view of science fiction features alongside realist engagements with the Victorian period and modernism. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach, contributors offer new insights into narrative engagement with science and its place in life today, in times past, and in times to come. The Threat Matrix: The FBI at War in the Age of Global Terror Garrett M. Graff Little, Brown and Company, 1st ed., New York, New York State, 2011
Based on access to never-before-seen task forces and FBI bases from Budapest, Hungary, to Quantico, Virginia, this book profiles the visionary agents who risked their lives to bring down criminals and terrorists both here in the U.S. and thousands of miles away long before the rest of the country was paying attention to terrorism. Given unprecedented access, thousands of pages of once secret documents, and hundreds of interviews, Garrett M. Graff takes us inside the FBI and its attempt to protect America from the Munich Olympics in 1972 to the attempted Times Square bombing in 2010. It also tells the inside story of the FBI's behind-the-scenes fights with the CIA, the Department of Justice, and five White Houses over how to combat terrorism, balance civil liberties, and preserve security. The book also offers a never-before-seen intimate look at FBI Director Robert Mueller, the only U.S. national security leader still in office from 9/11, and the most important director since Hoover himself. Covering more than 30 years of history and coming right up until the present day of the Obama administration's response to terrorist attacks like that on Christmas Day 2009 in Detroit, the book explores the transformation of the FBI from a domestic law enforcement agency, handling bank robberies and local crimes, into an international intelligence agency--with more than 500 agents operating in more than 60 countries overseas today--fighting extremist terrorism, cyber crimes, and, for the first time, American suicide bombers. Brilliantly reported and suspensefully told, The Threat Matrix peers into the darkest corners of this secret war and will change your view of the FBI forever. ** Review INCREDIBLE PRAISE FOR THE THREAT MATRIX : "Action-filled, richly detailed portrait of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in its new guise-charged not just with solving crimes already committed, but now with preventing at least some of them.... There's solid storytelling at work here-and quite a story to tell, too." ( Kirkus Reviews ) From the Author

Of Dice and Men: The Story of Dungeons and Dragons and the People Who Play It David M. Ewalt Scribner, a Division of Simon & Schuster, Inc, Simon & Schuster, New York, 2013
The Lord of the Rings meets Moneyball in this unique and authoritative book on Dungeons & Dragons--from the game's origins through its rise to cultural prominence, and its ripple effect on popular culture today. Even if you've never played Dungeons & Dragons, you probably know someone who has (whether or not they're willing to admit it). Released in 1974--decades before video games and the Internet took over the gaming world--Dungeons & Dragons became one of the original nerd subcultures, and is still revered by over thirty million fans today. Now Forbes senior editor David M. Ewalt explores the rich history of the game, revealing the magic that enlivened his youth, and has since re-entered his adult life in a whole new way. From its roots on the battlefields of ancient Europe, through the hysteria that linked it to satanic rituals and teen suicides, and to its apotheosis as father of the modern video game industry, Of Dice and Men recounts the development of a game played by some of most fascinating people in the world. Chronicling the surprising history of D & D's origins (one largely unknown even to hardcore players) while examining the game's profound impact, Ewalt weaves laser-sharp cultural analysis with his own present-day gaming experiences. An enticing blend of history, journalism, narrative and memoir, Of Dice and Men sheds light on America's most popular (and widely misunderstood) form of collaborative entertainment

Marx and Art (Insolubilia: New Work in Contemporary Philosophy) Ali Alizadeh Lanham, Maryland : Rowman & Littlefield International, Ltd, Insolubilia : new work in contemporary philosophy, London ; New York, 2019

A Genealogy of Social Violence : Founding Murder, Rawlsian Fairness, and the Future of the Family Clint Jones Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), Farnham, Surrey, 2013
Examining the mimetic theory of René Girard, this book investigates the development of society as a result of an original crime (a murder) that shaped the way the earliest humans organized the social structures we live with today - an analysis that reveals the dangerous structure of the most basic social relationships. With attention to family relationships, A Genealogy of Social Violence sheds light on the processes by which the traditional nuclear family, through the mimetic behaviour of children, embeds violence into human desires and hence society as whole. Challenging the thought of Girard and of Rawls in order to offer a new understanding of justice, this book suggests that in order to achieve a more peaceful society, what is required is not the self-defeating narrative of equality, developed in order to manage the violence engendered by our social institutions, but a reconceptualisation of the nuclear family structure. A striking critique of modern society, which draws on religion, mythology, literature, history, philosophy and political theory, A Genealogy of Social Violence will be of interest to social and political theorists, as well as philosophers working in the area of contemporary social and European thought. ** General Political Social Science Cultural Political Ideologies Sociology Philosophy Political Science Cultural & Social Anthropology Cover 1 Half Title 2 Title Page 4 Copyright Page 5 Table of Contents 6 List of Figures and Tables 8 Dedication 9 Preface 10 Series Editor's Preface 12 Acknowledgements 14 Nomenclature 16 An Excerpt from The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism 18 1 Introduction 20 "A Prayer Against Our Enemies" 28 2 An Overview of American Military Justice 30 Excerpts from The Swedish Articles of War 42 3 Puritan Military Justice 44 Excerpts from One Letter and Two Speeches 70 4 Puritnism and Responsibility 72 Two Stories of Hunting Witches 96 5 Puritanism and Revenge 98 An Excerpt on Military Superstitions of World War II 130 6 Puritanism and Superstition 132 An Excerpt from Sam Vaknin's Malignant Self Love 166 7 Puritanism an Narcissism 168 A Definition from The Devil’s Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce 188 8 Conclusion and Discussion 190 References 202 Index 224

Power, Interest and Psychology: Elements of a Social Materialist Understanding of Distress David Smail PCCS Books, PCCS Books, [N.p.], 2015
Conventional therapeutic psychology suggest that we are essentially self-creating and able (with a little help from a therapist) to heal ourselves of the emotional ills that beset us. This kind of view reflects the wishful thinking and make-believe that are necessary for the success of modern consumer capitalism, but it does not reflect the way things are. The alternative set out here, based on the author's many years'experience of practice as a clinical psychologist, offers a language and a set of concepts that enable us to understand ourselves as real, embodied beings in an equally real world that resists mere wishfulness. Our experience of ourselves, as well as much of our conduct, are accounted for in terms of the social operations of power and interest - and a framework is established for making sense of our emotional distress as the outcome of environmental pressures. David Smail argues that to take ourselves seriously as social beings, embodied in a real world over which as individuals we have very little influence, is by no means grounds for despair. Rather, it encourages modesty, appreciation of good fortune, compassion and recognition of our common humanity.

It Feels So Good When I Stop Joseph T. Pernice Penguin USA, Inc., 2010
EDITORIAL REVIEW: **Its more than just the debut novel from the acclaimed singer and songwriter-it's "the best messed up love song you'll ever read." (Dan Palladino and Amy Sherman-Palladino, creators of *The Gilmore Girls*) ** Our hero is a talented but floundering musician with no job, no apartment, no wife (anymore), and a six-pack of beer. Stuck between responsibility and freedom, and apathy and success, he's seeking sanctuary at his sister's home in Cape Cod, agreeing to look after his two-year old nephew. Together the unlikely pair attracts the attention of a lovely young woman with a broken past all her own and the ability to shock our hero awake-or shake him to his core.

Working : people talk about what they do all day and how they feel about what they do قنواتي، جورج شحاتة مؤسسة هنداوي سي آي سي،, First Edition, 2004
Perhaps Studs Terkel's best-known book, Working is a compelling look at jobs and the people who do them. Consisting of over one hundred interviews with everyone from a gravedigger to a studio head, from a policeman to a piano tuner, this book provides an enduring portrait of people's feelings about their working lives. "A powerful, original, indescribable and incredible book... Only an interviewer of genius, exploiting the tape recorder as hardly anyone else has done, could possibly have brought it forth." --Lewis Mumford "A magnificent book... a work of art. To read it is to hear America talking." --Boston Globe "Splendid... Important... Rich and fascinating... The people we meet are not digits in a poll but real people with real names who share their ancedotes, adventures, and aspirations with us." --Business Week "The talk in Working is good talk--earthy, passionate, honest, sometimes tender, sometimes crisp, juicy as reality, seasoned with experience." --Washington Post "Nothing could tell our children's children who and how and what we were the way Studs Terkel will. Is it possible the great American novelist is Terkel?" --Murray Kempton
