Film is often compared to music, explained by the use of musical terms and even conceived and structured using music as a model. The Musicality of Narrative Film is the first book to offer an in-depth examination of the film/music analogy through comparative analysis of both arts' common denominators: time, rhythm and movement. Drawing on a number of examples from contemporary art-house and mainstream cinema, Kulezic-Wilson argues that film's musical potential can be realized through various cinematic devices, with or without music. Online archive of Workers’ Playtime, a more-or-less regular class struggle-oriented journal produced between Feb ’83 and May ’85. Workers' Playtime was written and edited by a small group of revolutionaries who had got together through the London Workers Group (LWG) in the early 1980s, although it never aimed to be the journal (theoretical or otherwise) of the LWG. It is of interest because it provides detailed analysis of some of the most important workers’ struggles which took place in the UK in this period – notably the miners’ strike (1984-85), but also strikes in the printing industry, the docks, oil rig construction, car factories, railways, hospitals, sewage works etc. The analysis is combined with an absurdist style of humour all its own, which the WP collective tried to develop as a kind of “trademark” of the journal. Don’t worry if you don’t think it’s funny! You’re not the only one. WP’s attempt to be the Private Eye of the ultra-left didn’t always meet with success... or even comprehension. Several of the articles were written as pure satire and not intended to be taken seriously, but some people did take them seriously and wrote outraged letters to the WP collective! There are numerous references to 1980s popular culture, tabloid journalism, political sex scandals... Again, don’t worry if you don’t “get” it all – it’s really not necessary. Here, for your reading pleasure, are all ten editions! The WP articles relating to the 1984-85 miners’ strike have been scanned properly and will be made available separately on libcom. In addition there is a copy of Printers’ Playtime, which is a collection of all the articles in WP relating to the print industry, put together by Dark Star & Phoenix Press some time in 1987. For those really interested in the origins of WP, here’s a brief description which appeared in the last issue (it should be pointed out that the WP collective didn’t regard it as the last issue at the time...). The Myth After the long illness and death earlier this year of the London Workers Group (LWG), to which most of us belonged at one time or another, Workers Playtime began to take on the functions of a fully-autonomous fifth-generation political life-support system (a group). What happened to the LWG, which at its best was a vehicle for transsectarian discussion and activity, showed the present tendency for revolutionary circles to fragment into a series of separate activist or ideological “rumps”. Apart from anything else, this issue of Playtime should reflect our dissatisfaction with this state of affairs. For us, corresponding with and talking to like-minded people becomes at the same time more difficult and more important than ever. Up to now, we have relied almost entirely on informal contacts for criticism and a wider discussion of what we were doing. Even so, there was very little useful feedback from those people who claimed to read the paper. This is one reason why we seize on almost any response as an excuse for a lengthy reply (see Nationalism Today and What is Playtime Standing In?), and why the paper sometimes seems like a gigantic wind-up, as we try harder and harder to provoke our reader to retaliate. So the appeals for comment, criticism and contributions are not just a libertarian ritual. We are repeating it now. It makes a lot of difference to our desire and ability to continue (and no, we will not take an empty postbag as a clear signal that you want us to pack it in). In return, we promise to try and deal properly with the letters and publications we receive. Also, we'd be happy to meet people face-to-face, formally or informally, in London or wherever you are – drop us a line. In the near future we plan to have a readers' meeting which we hope you'll try and come to (there aren't many of you). It will not be just another boring political meeting if we can help it. The Scarecrow is the final volume of Ibrahim al-Koni's Oasis trilogy, which chronicles the founding, flourishing, and decline of a Saharan oasis. Fittingly, this continuation of a tale of greed and corruption opens with a meeting of the conspirators who assassinated the community's leader at the end of the previous novel, The Puppet. They punished him for opposing the use of gold in business transactions—a symptom of a critical break with their nomadic past—and now they must search for a leader who shares their fetishistic love of gold. A desert retreat inspires the group to select a leader at random, but their "choice," it appears, is not entirely human. This interloper from the spirit world proves a self-righteous despot, whose intolerance of humanity presages disaster for an oasis besieged by an international alliance. Though al-Koni has repeatedly stressed that he is not a political author, readers may see parallels not only to a former Libyan ruler but to other tyrants—past and present—who appear as hollow as a scarecrow.

Kadir Yildirim and other scholars have used the term “Muslim Democrat” to describe moderate Islamist political parties, suggesting a parallel with Christian Democratic parties in Europe. These parties (MDPs) are marked by their adherence to a secular political regime, normative commitment to the rules of a democratic political system, and the democratic political representation of a religious identity. In this book, Yildirim draws on extensive field research in Turkey, Egypt, and Morocco to examine this phenomenon and assess the interaction of economic and political factors in the development of MDPs. Distinguishing between “competitive [economic] liberalization” and “crony liberalization,” he argues that MDPs are more likely to emerge and succeed in the context of the former. He summarizes that the broader implication is that the economic liberalization models adopted by governments in the region in the wake of the Arab Spring have significant implications for the future direction of party systems and democratic reform.

Hegel's enduring importance lies in the fact that his philosophy sheds light on many contemporary problems; his conception of freedom enables us to reconcile many of the differences that divide liberalism and communitarianism. While liberalism tends to overemphasize the individual and devalue the community, communitarianism tends to do the reverse. One of his central aims is to integrate liberalism's concern for the political rights and interests of individuals within the framework of a community. He tries to reconcile the individual and community in a way that creates the proper mix of liberty and authority. One of Hegel's goals is to discover social structures that will allow individuals to escape the alienation that characterizes contemporary life. He sought a method of reconciling his contemporaries to the modern world by overcoming the things that split the self from the social world; that is, a place where people are at home in the social world. A sense of estrangement is all too common, even for those who enjoy more personal freedom and material abundance than ever thought possible. While Hegel is speaking directly to and about his contemporaries, their social world bears much in common with ours. Consequently, his attempt to reconcile philosophical and social contradictions can elucidate our own condition. While the modern world reflects important contributions, the advent of modern liberalism leads to excessive individualism that fragments social life, leaving individuals disconnected and adrift from meaningful social life. The major goal of Hegel's political philosophy is to reconcile the individual with his or her political community in a way that overcomes the alienation of modern life. Muhidin Maalim Gurumo and Hassan Rehani Bitchuka are two of Tanzania’s most well-known singers in the popular music genre known as muziki wa dansi (literally, 'music for dancing'), a variation of the Cuban-based rhumba idiom that has been enormously impactful throughout central, eastern, and western Africa in the contemporary era. This interview-based dual biography investigates the lives and careers of these two men from an ethnomusicological and historical perspective. Gurumo had a career spanning fifty years before his death in 2014. Bitchuka has been singing professionally for forty-five years. The two singers, affectionately called mapacha (“the twins”) by their colleagues, worked together as partners for thirty years from 1973-2003. This study situates these exemplary individuals as creative agents in a local cultural context, showcasing interviews, narratives, and nostalgic reminiscences about musical life lived under Colonialism, state Socialism, and current politics in the global neoliberal democratic milieu. Honor For Us is the first contemporary philosophical inquiry into the concept of honor.  It is unique not only in its analysis of six distinct concepts of honor, which includes an investigation into the place of honor in religious thought and ethics, but also in its interpretation of honor's prevalence in our own culture. Many would like to discard honor altogether as 'obsolete', but Sessions contends that the concept of honor is poorly understood, standing sorely in need of clarification.  He argues that the notion of honor remains viable in the face of powerful criticism, and that it has important features which warrant our normative interest. Foraging persists as a viable economic strategy both in remote regions and within the bounds of developed nation-states. Given the economic alternatives available, why do some groups choose to maintain their hunting and gathering lifeways? Through a series of detailed case studies, the contributors to this volume examine the decisions made by modern-day foragers to sustain a predominantly hunting and gathering way of life.
