Gibraltar and the Spanish Civil War, 1936-39 : Local, National and International Perspectives Julio Ponce Alberca; Irene Sánchez González Bloomsbury Academic, an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, Bloomsbury UK, London, 2014
Incorporating local, national and international dimensions of the conflict, Gibraltar and the Spanish Civil War, 1936-39 provides the first detailed account of the British enclave Gibraltar's role during and after the Spanish Civil War. The neutral stance adopted by democratic powers upon the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War is well-known. The Non-Intervention Committee played a key role in this strategy, with Great Britain a key player in what became known as the "London Committee". British interests in the Iberian Peninsula, however, meant that events in Spain were of crucial importance to the Foreign Office and the victory of the Popular Front in February, 1936 was deemed a potential threat that could drive the country towards instability. This book explores how British authorities in Gibraltar ostensibly initiated a formal policy of neutrality when the uprising took place, only for the Gibraltarian authorities to provide real support for the Nationalists under the surface. The book draws on a wealth of primary source material, some of it little-known before now, to deliver a significant contribution to our knowledge of the part played by democratic powers in the 1930s' confrontation between Communism and Fascism. It is essential reading for anyone seeking a complete understanding of the Spanish Civil War

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/Cooperation and Its Evolution - Kim Sterelny.pdf
Cooperation and Its Evolution (Life and Mind: Philosophical Issues in Biology and Psychology) edited by Kim Sterelny, Richard Joyce, Brett Calcott, and Ben Fraser MIT Press; A Bradford Book; Bradford Books, MIT Press, Cambridge, Mass, 2013
Essays from a range of disciplinary perspectives show the central role that cooperation plays in structuring our world. This collection reports on the latest research on an increasingly pivotal issue for evolutionary biology: cooperation. The chapters are written from a variety of disciplinary perspectives and utilize research tools that range from empirical survey to conceptual modeling, reflecting the rich diversity of work in the field. They explore a wide taxonomic range, concentrating on bacteria, social insects, and, especially, humans.Part I ('Agents and Environments') investigates the connections of social cooperation in social organizations to the conditions that make cooperation profitable and stable, focusing on the interactions of agent, population, and environment. Part II ('Agents and Mechanisms') focuses on how proximate mechanisms emerge and operate in the evolutionary process and how they shape evolutionary trajectories. Throughout the book, certain themes emerge that demonstrate the ubiquity of questions regarding cooperation in evolutionary biology: the generation and division of the profits of cooperation; transitions in individuality; levels of selection, from gene to organism; and the'human cooperation explosion'that makes our own social behavior particularly puzzling from an evolutionary perspective.

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/Yodeling and Meaning in America - Timothy E. Wise.epub
Yodeling and Meaning in American Music (American Made Music Series) Wise, Timothy E. University Press of Mississippi, American made music series, Jackson, 2016
Timothy E. Wise presents the first book to focus specifically on the musical content of yodeling in our culture. He shows that yodeling serves an aesthetic function in musical texts. A series of chronological chapters analyzes this musical tradition from its earliest appearances in Europe to its incorporation into a range of American genres and beyond. Wise posits the reasons for yodeling's changing status in our music. How and why was yodeling introduced into professional music making in the first place? What purposes has it served in musical texts? Why was it expunged from classical music? Why did it attach to some popular music genres and not others? Why does yodeling now appear principally at the margins of mainstream tastes? To answer such questions, Wise applies the perspectives of critical musicology, semiotics, and cultural studies to the changing semantic associations of yodeling in an unexplored repertoire stretching from Beethoven to Zappa. This volume marks the first musicological and ideological analysis of this prominent but largely ignored feature of American musical life. Maintaining high scholarly standards but keeping the general reader in mind, the author examines yodeling in relation to ongoing cultural debates about singing, music as art, social class, and gender. Chapters devote attention to yodeling in nineteenth-century classical music, the nineteenth-century Alpine-themed song in America, the Americanization of the yodel, Jimmie Rodgers, and cowboy yodeling, among other topics.

Hacker, Hoaxer, Whistleblower, Spy : The Many Faces of Anonymous E. Gabriella Coleman Verso books, Penguin Random House LLC (Publisher Services), London [England], 2014
The ultimate book on the worldwide movement of hackers, pranksters, and activists collectively known as Anonymous—by the writer the Huffington Post says “knows all of Anonymous'deepest, darkest secrets”“A work of anthropology that sometimes echoes a John le Carré novel.” —Wired Half a dozen years ago, anthropologist Gabriella Coleman set out to study the rise of this global phenomenon just as some of its members were turning to political protest and dangerous disruption (before Anonymous shot to fame as a key player in the battles over WikiLeaks, the Arab Spring, and Occupy Wall Street). She ended up becoming so closely connected to Anonymous that the tricky story of her inside–outside status as Anon confidante, interpreter, and erstwhile mouthpiece forms one of the themes of this witty and entirely engrossing book. The narrative brims with details unearthed from within a notoriously mysterious subculture, whose semi-legendary tricksters—such as Topiary, tflow, Anachaos, and Sabu—emerge as complex, diverse, politically and culturally sophisticated people. Propelled by years of chats and encounters with a multitude of hackers, including imprisoned activist Jeremy Hammond and the double agent who helped put him away, Hector Monsegur, Hacker, Hoaxer, Whistleblower, Spy is filled with insights into the meaning of digital activism and little understood facets of culture in the Internet age, including the history of “trolling,” the ethics and metaphysics of hacking, and the origins and manifold meanings of “the lulz.”

My Uncle Oswald Roald Dahl Penguin Books Ltd, 2011
Roald Dahl's first-ever novel presents the scurrilous memoirs of that delightful old reprobate from switch bitch, Oswald Hendryks Cornelius - connoisseur, bon vivant, collector of spiders, scorpions, odd walking sticks, lover of opera, expert on Chinese porcelain, and without doubt the greatest fornicator of all time. In this delightful picaresque story, it is revealed how Uncle Oswald first achieved great wealth - all thanks to the Sundance blister beetle, which when ground to powder has the most electrifying aphrodisiac qualities. It is 1919 - armed with the powder and aided by the beautiful amoral Yasmin how comely, Oswald begins an audacious commercial enterprise which involves seducing the most famous men in Europe - from crowded heads to Bernard Shaw and Marcel Proust.

William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge Lyrical Ballads Coleridge, Samuel Taylor; Schmidt, Michael; Wordsworth, William Penguin Classics [Imprint, Penguin Group (USA) Incorporated, Penguin Classics, 2007
Annotation Published in 1798, Lyrical Ballads is a dazzling collaboration containing twenty-three poems by close friends, William Wordsworth (1770-1850) and Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) - two major figures of English Romanticism. The volume heralded a new approach to poetry and expresses the poets' reflections on mankind's relationship with the forces of the world. Coleridge's contribution includes the nightmarish vision of 'The Rime of the Ancyent Marinere', one of the works for which he became best known, as well as the fantastical conversational poem 'The Foster-Mother's Tale' and the melancholic 'The Nightingale'. Wordsworth's 'We are Seven' depicts a child's naove optimism in the face of the cruel mortality, while 'Goody Blake and Harry Gill' and 'Simon Lee' celebrate the simplicity and strength he perceived in country people, and 'Tintern Abbey' explores the healing powers of nature. Meet Oswald Hendryks Cornelius, Roald Dahl's most disgraceful and extraordinary character . . . Aside from being thoroughly debauched, strikingly attractive and astonishingly wealthy, Uncle Oswald was the greatest bounder, bon vivant and fornicator of all time. In this instalment of his scorchingly frank memoirs he tells of his early career and erotic education at the hands of a number of enthusiastic teachers, of discovering the invigorating properties of the Sudanese Blister Beetle, and of the gorgeous Yasmin Howcomely, his electrifying partner in a most unusual series of thefts . . . upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/Paradigms for a Metaphorology - Hans Blumenberg.epub
Paradigms for a Metaphorology Blumenberg, Hans, Savage, Robert Cornell University Press and Cornell University Library, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), Ithaca, N.Y., 2010
" Paradigms for a Metaphorology may be read as a kind of beginner's guide to Blumenberg, a programmatic introduction to his vast and multifaceted oeuvre. Its brevity makes it an ideal point of entry for readers daunted by the sheer bulk of Blumenberg's later writings, or distracted by their profusion of historical detail. Paradigms expresses many of Blumenberg's key ideas with a directness, concision, and clarity he would rarely match elsewhere. What is more, because it served as a beginner's guide for its author as well, allowing him to undertake an initial survey of problems that would preoccupy him for the remainder of his life, it has the additional advantage that it can offer us a glimpse into what might be called the 'genesis of the Blumenbergian world.'"—from the Afterword by Robert Savage What role do metaphors play in philosophical language? Are they impediments to clear thinking and clear expression, rhetorical flourishes that may well help to make philosophy more accessible to a lay audience, but that ought ideally to be eradicated in the interests of terminological exactness? Or can the images used by philosophers tell us more about the hopes and cares, attitudes and indifferences that regulate an epoch than their carefully elaborated systems of thought? In Paradigms for a Metaphorology , originally published in 1960 and here made available for the first time in English translation, Hans Blumenberg (1920–1996) approaches these questions by examining the relationship between metaphors and concepts. Blumenberg argues for the existence of "absolute metaphors" that cannot be translated back into conceptual language. These metaphors answer the supposedly naïve, theoretically unanswerable questions whose relevance lies quite simply in the fact that they cannot be brushed aside, since we do not pose them ourselves but find them already posed in the ground of our existence. They leap into a void that concepts are unable to fill. An afterword by the translator, Robert Savage, positions the book in the intellectual context of its time and explains its continuing importance for work in the history of ideas. | What role do metaphors play in philosophical language? Rebel prince : the power, passion and defiance of Prince Charles Tom Bower HarperCollins Publishers Limited, Sep 21, 2018
Best-selling author Tom Bower reveals the power, passion and defiance of Prince Charles. Few heirs to the throne have suffered as much humiliation as Prince Charles. Despite his hard work and genuine concern for the disadvantaged, he has struggled to overcome his unpopularity. After Diana's death, his approval rating crashed to 4% and has been only rescued by his marriage to Camilla. Nevertheless, just one third of Britons now support him to be the next king. Many still fear that his accession to the throne will cause a constitutional crisis. That mistrust climaxed in the aftermath of the trial of Paul Burrell, Diana's butler, acquitted after the Queen's sensational 'recollection'. In unearthing many secrets surrounding that and many other dramas, Bower's book, relying on the testimony from over 120 people employed or welcomed into the inner sanctum of Clarence House, reveals a royal household rife with intrigue and misconduct. The result is a book which uniquely will probe into the character and court of the Charles that no one, until now, has seen.

The righteous judgment of God : aspects of judgement in Paul's letters John Richard Coulson, Michael F. Bird Wipf & Stock, an Imprint of Wipf and Stock Publishers, Lightning Source (Tier 4), Eugene, Oregon, 2016
This book seeks to fill a gap on the important topic of God's judgment. It is written for Christians who desire to have a biblical worldview that helps them to live faithfully for Jesus Christ. It investigates what the apostle Paul has to say in his letters about God's judgment. The worldview that emerges is one that must not be ignored: of judgment as fundamental to our human life as Adam's descendants, of God's judgment at work in the world today, and of the final judgment as the certain future for every person. At the center is the decisive judgment of our sin in Christ at the cross, which is God's answer to our judgment problem. For each of these four aspects of judgment, key questions are considered, with the central question being, "How do we live in the light of this truth?"

Mandela, Mi Prisionero, Mi Amigo Christo Brand & Barbara Jones Grupo Planeta Spain, First U.S. edition, New York, 2014
Assembling the Centre: Architecture for Indigenous Cultures: Australia and Beyond (Routledge Research in Architecture) Janet McGaw; Anoma Pieris Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), Abingdon, Oxon, 2015
Metropolitan Indigenous Cultural Centres have become a focal point for making Indigenous histories and contemporary cultures public in settler-colonial societies over the past three decades. While there are extraordinary success stories, there are equally stories that cause concern: award-winning architecturally designed Indigenous cultural centres that have been abandoned; centres that serve the interests of tourists but fail to nourish the cultural interests of Indigenous stakeholders; and places for vibrant community gathering that fail to garner the economic and politic support to remain viable. Indigenous cultural centres are rarely static. They are places of ‘emergence’, assembled and re-assembled along a range of vectors that usually lie beyond the gaze of architecture. How might the traditional concerns of architecture – site, space, form, function, materialities, tectonics – be reconfigured to express the complex and varied social identities of contemporary Indigenous peoples in colonised nations? This book, documents a range of Indigenous Cultural Centres across the globe and the processes that led to their development. It explores the possibilities for the social and political project of the Cultural Centre that architecture both inhibits and affords. Whose idea of architecture counts when designing Indigenous Cultural Centres? How does architectural history and contemporary practice territorialise spaces of Indigenous occupation? What is architecture for Indigenous cultures and how is it recognised? This ambitious and provocative study pursues a new architecture for colonised Indigenous cultures that takes the politics of recognition to its heart. It advocates an ethics of mutual engagement as a crucial condition for architectural projects that design across cultural difference. The book’s structure, method, and arguments are dialogically assembled around narratives told by Indigenous people of their pursuit of public recognition, spatial justice, and architectural presence in settler dominated societies. Possibilities for decolonising architecture emerge through these accounts. ** About the Author Janet McGaw is Senior Lecturer in Architecture, University of Melbourne, Australia. Anoma Pieris is Associate Professor in Architecture, University of Melbourne, Australia.

David Park, Painter : Nothing Held Back Helen Park Bigelow Counterpoint Press, Penguin Random House LLC (Publisher Services), Berkeley, CA, 2015
A mesmerizing, deeply moving portrait of the life and works of one of America's most important twentieth-century painters. A half century after his death, David Park (1911–1960) is recognized as one of America's most important twentieth–century painters. He was the first of the brilliant post–World War II generation of artists to break with Abstract Expressionism's hegemony and return to painting recognizable subjects, most powerfully the human figure. Park's original cohorts of Bay Area Figurative painters were his close friends Richard Diebenkorn, Elmer Bischoff, and Hassel Smith. All outlived him—Smith by nearly fifty years—and enjoyed recognition and fame during their lifetimes. Park's reputation is just now fully coming into its own. In David Park, Painter , Park's younger daughter, writer Helen Park Bigelow, paints a mesmerizing, deeply moving portrait of her father's life and early, difficult death. Park left high school in New England without graduating and came west in order to paint. He married Lydia (Deedie) Newell when he was nineteen and was the father of two by the time he was twenty–two. We are brought into a family rich with moral conviction, ingenuity, smart and gifted friends, music, and art: four complex people guided and inspired by values of integrity. Those same values guided and inspired David Park's painting. Yet this is much more than an artist biography. David Park, Painter is a skillful blend of memoir and observations about life in the Bay Area just before and just after World War II, when some of America's most original, even radical, artists and writers gathered there. This close–up portrayal is unlike other accounts of artists. It is the story of a family built on the love and dedication of one man who held nothing back from his art, and of the spirit of the wife and daughters who supported him. Richard Armstrong, in reflecting on Park's generation of artists in his foreword to this beautiful book, observes that David Park, Painter is "especially valuable as we persist in seeking to make real and human the commanding artistic figures."

Identification Revolution : Can Digital ID Be Harnessed for Development? Alan Gelb; Anna Diofasi Metz Center for Global Development, Independent Publishers Group, Washington D.C., 2018
Some 600 million children worldwide do not legally exist. Without verifiable identification, they—and unregistered adults—could face serious difficulties in proving their identity, whether to open a bank account, purchase a SIM card, or cast a vote. Lack of identification is a barrier to full economic and social inclusion. Recent advances in the reach and technological sophistication of identification systems have been nothing less than revolutionary. Since 2000, over 60 developing countries have established national ID programs. Digital technology, particularly biometrics such as fingerprints and iris scans, has dramatically expanded the capabilities of these programs. Individuals can now be uniquely identified and reliably authenticated against their claimed identities. By enabling governments to work more effectively and transparently, identification is becoming a tool for accelerating development progress. Not only is provision of legal identity for all a target under the Sustainable Development Goals, but this book shows how it is also central to achieving numerous other SDG targets. Yet, challenges remain. Identification systems can fail to include the poor, leaving them still unable to exercise their rights, access essential services, or fully participate in political and economic life. The possible erosion of privacy and the misuse of personal data, especially in countries that lack data privacy laws or the capacity to enforce them, is another challenge. Yet another is ensuring that investments in identification systems deliver a development payoff. There are all too many examples where large expenditures—sometimes supported by donor governments or agencies—appear to have had little impact. Identification Revolution: Achieving Sustainable Development in the Digital Age offers a balanced perspective on this new area, covering both the benefits and the risks of the identification revolution, as well as pinpointing opportunities to mitigate those risks.

Understanding the Analects of Confucius: A New Translation of Lunyu with Annotations (SUNY series in Chinese Philosophy and Culture) Confucius; Peimin Ni State University of New York Press, State University of New York Press, Albany, NY, 2017
Winner of the 2019 Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for a Translation of a Scholarly Study of Literature presented by the Modern Language AssociationThe Analects of Confucius is arguably the single most influential work of China's cultural heritage. In this new English translation, Peimin Ni accomplishes the rare feat of simultaneously providing a faithful translation of the text, offering his own reading based on gongfu (practice) perspective, and presenting major alternative readings to help the reader understand how diverse interpretations and controversies arise. In addition to the inclusion of the original Chinese text, Ni adds a comprehensive introduction, a discussion of key terms, annotations, and extensive cross-references. In doing so, Ni makes the text accessible and engaging for today's audience.

Designs for the Pluriverse: Radical Interdependence, Autonomy, and the Making of Worlds (New Ecologies for the Twenty-First Century) Arturo Escobar, Arturo Escobar Duke University Press Books, New ecologies for the twenty-first century, New ecologies for the twenty-first century, North Carolina, 2018
In Designs for the Pluriverse Arturo Escobar presents a new vision of design theory and practice aimed at channeling design's world-making capacity toward ways of being and doing that are deeply attuned to justice and the Earth. Noting that most design—from consumer goods and digital technologies to built environments—currently serves capitalist ends, Escobar argues for the development of an “autonomous design” that eschews commercial and modernizing aims in favor of more collaborative and placed-based approaches. Such design attends to questions of environment, experience, and politics while focusing on the production of human experience based on the radical interdependence of all beings. Mapping autonomous design’s principles to the history of decolonial efforts of indigenous and Afro-descended people in Latin America, Escobar shows how refiguring current design practices could lead to the creation of more just and sustainable social orders. ** Cover 1 Contents 8 Preface and Acknowledgments 10 Introduction 24 I: Design for the Real World: But Which “World”? Acts of Undressing: Politics, Eroticism, and Discarded Clothing (Dress, Body, Culture) Barbara Brownie; Joanne B Eicher Bloomsbury Academic, an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, Bloomsbury UK, London, 2016
The act of undressing has a multitude of meanings, which vary dramatically when this commonly private gesture is presented for public consumption. This ground-breaking book explores the significance of undressing in various cultural and social contexts. As we are increasingly obsessed with dress choices as signifiers of who we are and how we feel, an investigation into what happens as we remove our clothes has never been more pertinent. Exploring three main issues - politics, tease, and clothes without bodies - Acts of Undressing discusses these key themes through an in-depth and eclectic mix of case studies including flashing at Mardi Gras, the World Burlesque Games, and 'shoefiti' used by gangs to mark territories. Building on leading theories of dress and the body, from academics including Roland Barthes and Mario Perniolato, Ruth Barcan and Erving Goffman, Acts of Undressing is essential reading for students of fashion, sociology, anthropology, visual culture, and related subjects.

The Memory We Could Be : Overcoming Fear to Create Our Ecological Future Daniel Macmillen Voskoboynik New Society Publishers, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., Gabriola Island, BC, 2018
“Voskoboynik's book offers an exhilarating introduction to our ecological crisis, what caused it, and how we can imagine a better future.” —Jason Hickel, author of Less Is MoreThe Memory We Could Be moves beyond the sterile, technical language around climate change and ecology to humanize the abstraction of global warming and bring different voices into the conversation.Drawing on sources from anthropology to hydrology, botany to economics, agronomy to astrobiology, medicine to oceanography, physics to history, the author weaves a lyrical and powerful story of our relationship with nature. The book has three parts:“Past” addresses memory. Our inability to comprehend our staggering present partly lies in our ignorance of our staggering past. We peer into the black box of history to understand how we got here. We go on a journey across the roots of our ecological crisis, from the Roman Empire to the forests of Burma, from Congolese rubber plantations, to Colombian oil fields.“Present” illustrates how climate change is shaping our world today, explores how it relates to poverties and inequalities, and equips readers with a set of intuitive instruments to understand climate impacts.“Future” looks at alternatives and strives to illustrate in human terms the world we could lose and the world we can win. It asks what we can do and develops a transformative vision of a more ecological and equitable economy. The Memory We Could Be is vital reading for all of humanity.“A gripping review of where we've been, where we are, and where we may be headed.” —Michael E. Mann, author of The New Climate War

Introduction to the Reading of Hegel: Lectures on the Phenomenology of Spirit (Agora Paperback Editions) Alexandre Kojève, Allan Bloom (editor), James H. Nichols (translator) Agora/Cornell University Press, Agora paperback editions, Ithaca, N.Y, New York State, 1980
"This collection of Kojeve's thoughts about Hegel constitutes one of the few important philosophical books of the twentieth century-a book, knowledge of which is requisite to the full awareness of our situation and to the grasp of the most modern perspective on the eternal questions of philosophy."―Allan Bloom (from his introduction)During the years 1933–1939, the Russian-born and German-educated Marxist political philosopher Alexandre Kojève (1902–1968) brilliantly explicated―through a series of lectures―the philosophy of Hegel as it was developed in the Phenomenology of Spirit. This collection of lectures―originally compiled by Raymond Queneau and edited for its English-language translation by Allan Bloom―shows the intensity of Kojève's study and thought and the depth of his insight into Hegel's Phenomenology. More important―for Kojève was above all a philosopher and not an ideologue―this profound and venturesome work on Hegel will expose the readers to the excitement of discovering a great mind in all its force and power.Table of Contents:1. The Eclipse of the Utopias of Labor (Forms of Living) Anson Rabinbach Fordham University Press, Fordham University Press, New York, NY, 2018
The Eclipse of the Utopias of Labor traces the shift from the eighteenth-century concept of man as machine to the late twentieth-century notion of digital organisms. Step by step―from Jacques de Vaucanson and his Digesting Duck, through Karl Marx’s Capital, Hermann von Helmholtz’s social thermodynamics, Albert Speer’s Beauty of Labor program in Nazi Germany, and on to the post-Fordist workplace, Rabinbach shows how society, the body, and labor utopias dreamt up future societies and worked to bring them about. This masterful follow-up to The Human Motor, Rabinbach’s brilliant study of the European science of work, bridges intellectual history, labor history, and the history of the body. It shows the intellectual and policy reasons as to how a utopia of the body as motor won wide acceptance and moved beyond the “man as machine” model before tracing its steep decline after 1945―and along with it the eclipse of the great hopes that a more efficient workplace could provide the basis of a new, more socially satisfactory society. **

Abolition Geography : Essays Towards Liberation Ruth Wilson Gilmore; Brenna Bhandar; Alberto Toscano Verso UK, Penguin Random House LLC (Publisher Services), London, 2022
The first collection of writings from one of the foremost contemporary critical thinkers on racism, geography and incarcerationGathering together Ruth Wilson Gilmore's work from over three decades, Abolition Geography presents her singular contribution to the politics of abolition as theorist, researcher, and organizer, offering scholars and activists ways of seeing and doing to help navigate our turbulent present. Abolition Geography moves us away from explanations of mass incarceration and racist violence focused on uninterrupted histories of prejudice or the dull compulsion of neoliberal economics. Instead, Gilmore offers a geographical grasp of how contemporary racial capitalism operates through an “anti-state state” that answers crises with the organized abandonment of people and environments deemed surplus to requirement. Gilmore escapes one-dimensional conceptions of what liberation demands, who demands liberation, or what indeed is to be abolished. Drawing on the lessons of grassroots organizing and internationalist imaginaries, Abolition Geography undoes the identification of abolition with mere decarceration, and reminds us that freedom is not a mere principle but a place. Edited with an introduction by Brenna Bhandar and Alberto Toscano.

Game Time : Understanding Temporality in Video Games Christopher Hanson Indiana University Press, Office of Scholarly Publishing, Herman B Wells Library, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., Bloomington, Indiana, 2018
Pausing, slowing, rewinding, replaying, reactivating, reanimating... Has manipulating video game timelines altered our experience of time? “Compelling.” —ChoiceVideo game scholar Christopher Hanson argues that the mechanics of time in digital games have presented a new model for understanding time in contemporary culture, a concept he calls “game time.” Multivalent in nature, game time is characterized by apparent malleability, navigability, and possibility while simultaneously being highly restrictive and requiring replay and repetition. When compared to analog tabletop games, sports, film, television, and other forms of media, Hanson demonstrates, the temporal structures of digital games provide unique opportunities to engage players with liveness, causality, potentiality, and lived experience that create new ways of experiencing time.Features comparative analysis of key video games titles—including Braid, Quantum Break, Battle of the Bulge, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Passage, The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time, Lifeline, and A Dark Room.“The text is well-researched, and the introduction is an excellent, focused overview of video game studies.” —Choice

Realizing the Distinctive University : Vision and Values, Strategy and Culture Dean Mark William Roche University of Notre Dame Press, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), Notre Dame, Indiana, 2017
In Realizing the Distinctive University: Vision and Values, Strategy and Culture , Mark Roche changes the terms of the debate about American higher education. A former dean of the College of Arts and Letters at the University of Notre Dame, Roche argues for the importance of an institutional vision, not simply a brand, and while he extols the value of entrepreneurship, he defines it in contrast to the corporate drive toward commercialization and demands for business management models. Using the history of the German university to assess the need for, and implementation of, distinctive visions at American colleges and universities, Roche's own vision benefits from his deep connection to both systems as well as his experience in the trenches working to realize the special mission of an American Catholic university. Roche makes a significant contribution by delineating means for moving such an institution from vision to implementation. Roche provides a road map to creating a superb arts and sciences college within a major research university and offers a rich analysis of five principles that have shaped the modern American university: flexibility, competition, incentives, accountability, and community. He notes the challenges and problems that surface with these categories and includes ample illustration of both best practices and personal missteps. The book makes clear that even a compelling intellectual vision must always be linked to its embodiment in rhetoric, support structures, and community. Throughout this unique and appealing contribution to the literature on higher education, Roche avoids polemic and remains optimistic about the ways in which a faculty member serving in administration can make a positive difference. Realizing the Distinctive University is a must read for academic administrators, faculty members interested in the inner workings of the university, and graduate students and scholars of higher education. ** Administration Higher Leadership Education Decision-Making & Problem Solving Cover 1 Realizing the Distinctive University 2 Title 4 Copyright 5 Contents 6 Acknowledgments 8 Introduction, or How I Almost Managed to Become Someone Else 10 PART I. Rebel prince : the power, passion and defiance of Prince Charles Tom Bower (author) William Collins, An Imprint Of Harpercollins Publishers,, First published, London, 2018
'Explosive new book delves inside the bizarre, ultra luxury world of Prince Charles' Sun Best-selling author Tom Bower reveals the power, passion and defiance of Prince Charles.

Gentrification As A Global Strategy: Neil Smith And Beyond (routledge Critical Studies In Urbanism And The City) Abel Albet; Abel Albet Mas; Núria Benach Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2018
This book pays homage to Neil Smith’s ideas, offering a critical approach and rich collection of insights that draw on Smith’s work for inspiration and debate. With interdisciplinary and international contributions from leading experts, the book demonstrates the impact of Smith’s ideas on understanding the role of urbanisation in general and gentrification, in particular, in contemporary society. The book demonstrates how gentrification varies significantly from city to city, across different cultural and political-economic regimes, and in terms of the timing of urban transformations. This collection provides a forum for debate for those working in urban regeneration and citizenship, and those directly affected by the processes and problems arising from gentrification. It will be of interest to students and scholars in urban geography, urban sociology, cultural studies, and wider social and urban theories. **

Phenomenology, architecture, and the built world : exercises in philosophical anthropology James Dodd Koninklijke Brill N.V., Brill Academic Publishers, Leiden, 2017
Phenomenology, Architecture and the Built World is an introduction to the methods and basic concepts of phenomenological philosophy through an analysis of the phenomenon of the built world. The conception of the built world that emerges is of space and time fashioned in accordance with a living understanding of what it is for human beings to exist in the world. Human building and making is thus no mere supplementary instrument in the pursuit of the ends of life, but a fundamental embodiment of the self-understanding of human beings. Phenomenological description is uniquely capable of bringing into view the physiognomy of this understanding, its texture and complexity, thereby providing an important basis for a critique of what constitutes its essence and its conditions of possibility. Metropolisarchitecture and Selected Essays Ludwig Hilberseimer; Richard Anderson (Ed.); Pier Vittorio Aureli Columbia University Press & GSAPP Sourcebooks, Columbia University GSAPP Sourcebooks, Tra, 2013
In the 1920s, the urban theory of Ludwig Hilberseimer (1885-1967) redefined architecture's relationship to the city. His proposal for a high-rise city, where leisure, labor and circulation would be vertically integrated, both frightened his contemporaries and offered a trenchant critique of the dynamics of the capitalist metropolis. Hilberseimer's __Groszstadtarchitektur__ (__Metropolisarchitecture__) is presented here for the first time in English translation. Two additional essays frame this international cross-section of metropolitan architecture: "Der Wille zur Architektur" (The Will to Architecture) and "Vorschlag zur City-Bebauung" (Proposal for City-Center Development). The propositions assembled here encourage us to reconsider mobility, concentration and the scale of architectural intervention in our own era of urban expansion. This is the second title in the __GSAPP Sourcebooks__ series, which is devoted to recovering and translating overlooked texts on architecture and the city. Translated by Richard Anderson and Julie Dawson.

The Memory We Could Be : Overcoming Fear to Create Our Ecological Future Daniel Macmillen Voskoboynik New Society Publishers, Limited, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., Gabriola Island, BC, 2018
"Voskoboynik's book offers an exhilarating introduction to our ecological crisis, what caused it, and how we can imagine a better future." —Jason Hickel, author of Less Is More The Memory We Could Be moves beyond the sterile, technical language around climate change and ecology to humanize the abstraction of global warming and bring different voices into the conversation. Drawing on sources from anthropology to hydrology, botany to economics, agronomy to astrobiology, medicine to oceanography, physics to history, the author weaves a lyrical and powerful story of our relationship with nature. The book has three parts: " Past " addresses memory. Our inability to comprehend our staggering present partly lies in our ignorance of our staggering past. We peer into the black box of history to understand how we got here. We go on a journey across the roots of our ecological crisis, from the Roman Empire to the forests of Burma, from Congolese rubber plantations, to Colombian oil fields. " Present " illustrates how climate change is shaping our world today, explores how it relates to poverties and inequalities, and equips readers with a set of intuitive instruments to understand climate impacts. " Future " looks at alternatives and strives to illustrate in human terms the world we could lose and the world we can win. It asks what we can do and develops a transformative vision of a more ecological and equitable economy. The Memory We Could Be is vital reading for all of humanity. "A gripping review of where we've been, where we are, and where we may be headed." —Michael E. Mann, author of The New Climate War

Watching War on the Twenty-First Century Stage: Spectacles of Conflict (Engage) Clare Finburgh Delijani; Mark Taylor-Batty; Clare Finburgh Delijani Methuen Drama; Bloomsbury, Bloomsbury UK, London, 2017
What do we watch when we watch war? Who manages public perceptions of war and how? Watching War on the Twenty-First-Century Stage: Spectacles of Conflict is the first publication to examine how theatre in the UK has staged, debated and challenged the ways in which spectacle is habitually weaponized in times of war. The 'battle for hearts and minds' and the 'war of images' are fields of combat that can be as powerful as armed conflict. And today, spectacle and conflict – the two concepts that frame the book – have joined forces via audio-visual technologies in ways that are more powerful than ever. Clare Finburgh's original and interdisciplinary interrogation provides a richly provocative account of the structuring role that spectacle plays in warfare, engaging with the works of philosopher Guy Debord, cultural theorist Jean Baudrillard, visual studies specialist Marie-José Mondzain, and performance scholar Hans-Thies Lehmann. She offers coherence to a large and expanding field of theatrical war representation by analysing in careful detail a spectrum of works as diverse as expressionist drama, documentary theatre, comedy, musical satire and dance theatre. She demonstrates how features unique to the theatrical art, namely the construction of a fiction in the presence of the audience, can present possibilities for a more informed engagement with how spectacles of war are produced and circulated. If we watch with more resistance, we may contribute in significant ways to the demilitarization of images. And what if this were the first step towards a literal demilitarization? ** Theatre Entertainment Nonfiction Performing Arts History & Criticism Title Page 4 Copyright Page 5 Contents 8 List of Illustrations 11 Acknowledgements 14 By way of an introduction 18 Chapter 1 An introduction to war and/as spectacle 30 ‘Spectakil’: A definition of spectacle 31 Conflict as media spectacle 34 The news in perspective 39 Theories of spectacle 43 A spectacle–‘reality’ binary opposition? 51 The weaponization of spectacle 56 The terrorism of the spectacle 62 Conflict on the twenty-first-century London stage 64 Theatre and the ‘culture of the gaze’ 67 Extant literature on spectacles of conflict 78 Conclusion 80 Chapter 2 Helmets – soldiering as spectacle 82 The military as spectacle: Gregory Burke and John Tiffany, Black Watch (2006) 83 The military as media spectacle 87 The military in theatre 90 Howard Barker, The Dying of Today (2008) 97 Hayley Squires, Vera Vera Vera (2012) 102 Mark Ravenhill, Shoot/Get Treasure/Repeat (2008) 110 Fear and Misery and War and Peace (Shoot/Get Treasure/Repeat) 120 George Brant, Grounded (2012) 124 Conclusion 141 Chapter 3 Headscarves – ‘terrorism’ as spectacle1 146 War and ‘terrorism’ – spectacle or spectrum? 149 Terrorism and/as spectacle 153 Plays, productions and performance theory on ‘terrorism’ 163 Censorship and self-censorship 168 Mark Ravenhill, Product (2006) 169 Simon Stephens, Pornography (2008) 177 Lone Twin, Alice Bell (2006) 191 Interrupting theatre-as-spectacle and the politics of perception 197 Conclusion 202 Chapter 4 Hoods – human rights abuses omitted from spectacle 206 Spectacles of risk: Counterterrorism and human rights 209 Hooding and invisibility 213 The all-too-real spectacle: Theatricality and the Abu Ghraib photographs 216 Plays and productions on torture 220 Richard Norton-Taylor, Tactical Questioning: The Baha Mousa Inquiry (2011) 224 Nigel Jamieson and Garry Stewart’s Honour Bound (2006) 242 Youssef El Guindi, Back of the Throat (2008) 256 Dennis Kelly, Osama the Hero (2005) 263 Conclusion 279 Conclusion: ‘Violence without violence’ 282 To sum up… 283 ‘Violence without violence’ and the artistic image 285 Lola Arias, MINEFIELD (2016)5 293 Faltering for the better 304 Notes 308 Bibliography 347 Index 364

Obsessions : The Twisted Cruelty Francesco Bisagni Taylor and Francis, an imprint of Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, UNKNOWN, 2017
This book explores the interrelatedness between obsessive compulsive disorders, thinking disorders, and depression. The issue is considered both from a psychiatric viewpoint and from a psychodynamic perspective. The age of the cases presented in the book ranges from childhood through adolescence to adulthood. Obsessions: The Twisted Cruelty is a challenging contribution to contemporary clinical debate, especially regarding the role of analytically-oriented psychotherapy in the treatment of OCD, and how to deal with the psychiatric treatment and combine the two approaches, while keeping the focus on the transference-countertransference interplay. After the first theoretical chapter, the relationship between obsessions and thinking impairments is discussed, with specific reference to delusional ideation. A section entitled'the anal conundrum'follows. Encopresis and anal masturbation during childhood are discussed, as well as the identification of the child with a maternal'faecal object. The last section explores the connection with depression, and some specific features of sadism.

Foreign Friends: Syngman Rhee, American Exceptionalism, and the Division of Korea (Studies in Conflict, Diplomacy, and Peace) Fields, David P.; The University Press of Kentucky, Studies in conflict, diplomacy, and peace, Lexington, Kentucky, 2019
The division of Korea in August 1945 was one of the most consequential foreign policy decisions of the twentieth century. Despite the enormous impact this split has had on international relations from the Cold War to the present, comparatively little has been done to explain the decision. In Foreign Friends: Syngman Rhee, American Exceptionalism, and the Division of Korea , author David P. Fields argues that the division resulted not from a snap decision made by US military officers at the end of World War II but from a forty-year lobbying campaign spearheaded by Korean nationalist Syngman Rhee. Educated in an American missionary school in Seoul, Rhee understood the importance of exceptionalism in American society. Alleging that the US turned its back on the most rapidly Christianizing nation in the world when it acquiesced to Japan's annexation of Korea in 1905, Rhee constructed a coalition of American supporters to pressure policymakers to right these historical wrongs by supporting Korea's independence. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Rhee and his Korean supporters reasoned that the American abandonment of Korea had given the Japanese a foothold in Asia, tarnishing the US claim to leadership in the opinion of millions of Asians. By transforming Korea into a moralist tale of the failures of American foreign policy in Asia, Rhee and his camp turned the country into a test case of American exceptionalism in the postwar era. Division was not the outcome they sought, but their lobbying was a crucial yet overlooked piece that contributed to this final resolution. Through its systematic use of the personal papers and diary of Syngman Rhee, as well as its serious examination of American exceptionalism, Foreign Friends synthesizes religious, intellectual, and diplomatic history to offer a new interpretation of US-Korean relations. ** Review "A terrific piece of scholarship that challenges our understanding of the Korean independence movement and offers larger lessons about the international impact of American exceptionalism. Well written, thorough, and provocative."―Mitchell Lerner, associate professor of history and director of the Institute for Korean Studies at the Ohio State University, and associate editor of the Journal of American-East Asian Relations "In this deeply researched, elegantly written, and persuasive book, Korea scholar David P. Fields revives and expands the legacy of Syngman Rhee, the first president of South Korea. Fields makes a compelling argument: Without Rhee and his long decades of lobbying in America for a free Korea, the United States would never have created South Korea or gone to war to defend it."―Blaine Harden, former foreign correspondent for the Washington Post and author of King of Spies and other books on North Korea About the Author David P. Fields is the associate director of the Center for East Asian Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He is also the editor of The Diary of Syngman Rhee and the book review editor of the Journal of American-East Asian Relations .
