Berkshire Encyclopedia of World History, Vol. 3: Global Migrations in Modern Times-Mysticism William H. McNeill, senior editor; Jerry H. Bentley ... [et al.], editors Berkshire Publishing Group, Gale virtual reference library, Great Barrington, Mass., U.S.A, ©2005
The "Berkshire Encyclopedia of World History" is the first true encyclopedic reference on world history. It is designed to meet the needs of students, teachers, and scholars who seek to explore and understand the panorama of our shared human history. The encyclopedia takes a dynamic world history perspective, showing connections, interactions, and chage over time and place. Major articles by leading scholars from around the world examine essential themes and patterns such as Art, Disease, Government, Religion, Science, and War and Peace, with hundreds of articles on processes, movements, places, events, and people. Students and teachers at the high school and college levels turn to this definitive work for a connected view of world history--the story of humans and their place in the universe. From School Library Journal Grade 10 Up–Although the 538 articles in this set are arranged alphabetically, the approach is thematic, with entries and sidebars "showing connections and interactions, through trade, warfare, migration, religion, and diplomacy over time and place." Volume one opens with an overview of human history that serves as a guide to the Encyclopedia , and alphabetic and thematic lists of the entries appear in each book. Much prehistory is treated in this work, which bills itself as covering "250,000 years of human existence." However, readers may wonder why some subjects were included, or even given their own entry, and others weren't. For example, there is no entry for the Peloponnesian Wars, but the extensive index will lead students to information under entries for "Greece, Ancient," "International Organizations," "Oral History," "Thucydides," "Warfare, Naval," and "Engines of History." This last is an example of the somewhat obscure and/or unusual headings that sometimes appear. An up-to-date bibliography follows every article. The black-and-white photos are of uneven quality; many lack sufficient contrast. The maps included are insufficient to clarify the discussions of empires, countries, wars, and movements of peoples. This set would be useful as a supplement to general encyclopedias. –David Pauli, Hillsboro Public Library, OR Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From Booklist Starred Review A masterful title that weaves together the social, scientific, anthropological, and geographical influences on world history, this set will be the benchmark against which future history encyclopedias are compared. Featuring 538 articles by 330 scholars representing multiple disciplines, the title adroitly pulls together the major societies ( Mongol Empire, Sumerian society ); political movements ( Revolution--Cuba; Women's emancipation movements ); and, indeed, the traditionally studied wars ( World War I ) that have shaped the world we live in, all while remaining cognizant of how each has had an impact on the other. The academic credentials of the editors are impeccable. Senior editor McNeill has written dozens of respected texts and was winner of the National Book Award in 1964 for The Rise of the West . Although attempting to cover as broad a subject as world history in five volumes seems impossible, the editors and their contributors have pulled the feat off with aplomb. No article runs more than approximately 10 pages, but each captures the essence of the topic being addressed, as well as the distinct style of the contributor. Cross-references are noted at the end of most entries, and the lists of further reading contain contemporary works. Primary source material is not left out, however; more than 500 sidebars featuring quoted material often use primary sources. The entry Babylon , for example, includes some text from the Code of Hammurabi. Each volume opens with a "Reader's Guide" listing 34 subject categories, allowing users to concentrate on articles dealing with, for example, topics related to "Communication" or "Health and Disease." The first volume also features "This Fleeting World," a 56-page essay by David Christian covering the foraging, agrarian, and modern eras of history. Oddly, this essay is repeated in volume 5 (and may also be found in its entirety on the publisher's Web site [http://www.berkshirepublishing.com/assets/pdf/ThisFleetingWorld.pdf]). With relatively few entries, not everyone will agree with what is included. In a set that features but 110 biographical entries, should there really be one devoted to American abolitionist and author Lydia Child? Do Bullroarers deserve a separate entry? In keeping with the philosophy of the set, however, there are nine entries in a row on trading--beginning with Trading patterns, ancient America --that discuss commerce among the people of various regions. Accompanying the text are numerous black-and-white illustrations and more than 50 maps, most of them excellent line-drawn maps created for the set. There are a few minor errors in cross-referencing and indexing. As McNeill states in his preface, the encyclopedia is "designed to help both beginners and experts to sample the best contemporary efforts to make sense of the human past by connecting particular and local histories with larger patterns of world history." The encyclopedia succeeds admirably and belongs on the shelves of all high-school, public, and academic libraries. In short: buy it. Now. Ken Black Copyright © American Library Association. Club Government: How the Early Victorian World was Ruled from London Clubs (International Library of Colonial History) Seth Alexander Thévoz I.B. Tauris; Bloomsbury, Bloomsbury UK, London, 2018
The book phenomenon of ‘Club Government’ in the mid-nineteenth century, when many of the functions of government were alleged to have taken place behind closed doors, in the secretive clubs of London’s St. James’s district, has not been adequately historicized. Despite ‘Club Government’ being referenced in most major political histories of the period, it is a topic which has never before enjoyed a full-length study. Making use of previously-sealed club archives, and adopting a broad range of analytical techniques, this work of political history, social history, sociology and quantitative approaches to history seeks to deepen our understanding of the distinctive and novel ways in which British political culture evolved in this period. The book concludes that historians have hugely underestimated the extent of club influence on ‘high politics’ in Westminster, and though the reputation of clubs for intervening in elections was exaggerated, the culture and secrecy involved in gentleman’s clubs had a huge impact on Britain and the British Empire. ** About the Author Seth Alexander Thévoz is an Associate Member of Nuffield College, Oxford, where he is a research assistant on the forthcoming official biography of Sir David Butler. He holds degrees from the universities of Cambridge, London and Warwick, and he completed his PhD in conjunction with the History of Parliament Trust. Evolution and Consciousness : a From a Barren Rocky Earth to Artists, Philosophers, Meditators and Psychotherapists Michael (Michelo) DelMonte and Maeve Halpin Brill | Rodopi, Brill Academic Publishers, Leiden, 2019
This volume provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the emerging concept of the evolution of consciousness. The simple, but dynamic, theory of evolving consciousness blends the powerful insights of modern science with the deep wisdom of age-old cultures, synthesising the traditions of East and West, of the head and heart, of the feminine and the masculine and of science and spirituality. By integrating diverse multi-disciplinary approaches, it provides an overarching and transcending model that moves us to a new level of meaning and understanding of our place in the world. An appreciation of the evolution of consciousness can deepen our connection to ourselves, to others and to the natural world, while bringing a new dimension to the work of psychotherapy.

The absolute power complex from Constantine to Stalin : the collective unconscious of Catholic and Orthodox countries Mino Vianello Taylor & Francis Group, 1st edition, London, 2019
In The Absolute Power Complex from Constantine to Stalin: The Collective Unconscious of Catholic and Orthodox Countries Mino Vianello advances a new hermeneutical paradigm in analyzing why liberal-democratic institutions and ways of life do not flourish in Catholic and Orthodox countries. Vianello maintains that the breaking point is not the Reform, as Weber stated in the wake of de Tocqueville, but the events of the fourth century, with the Nicene Council, convoked by Constantine for the purely political purpose of giving a psychological cement to the crumbling empire, and Theodosius the Great’s decision to proclaim the Trinitarian Doctrine State Religion. These events left an indelible mark in the collective unconscious of the peoples who happened to fall into this mesh studded with neo-platonic philosophical categories and legal concepts derived from Roman Law. This book demonstrates the inception and effects of the Absolute Power Complex by linking the theological-political construction of the Church to later absolute regimes and twentieth century dictatorships. This distinguishes these countries from those Christianized by Arius’ followers, which eleven centuries later became Protestant. Vianello traces the wavering succession of philosophical and theological doctrines which have shaken Christianity, leading to a combination of politics and theology unknown to early Christians and the Evangelical Message. This is the first time that Jung’s concept of the Collective Unconscious has been historically explored in terms of political and social consequences in such an innovative and interdisciplinary way. Although Vianello explores historical themes, this book will be a fascinating resource for analytical psychologists and other professionals informed by Jung’s ideas. It will also appeal to academics and students of the history of ideas, political theory, sociology, hermeneutics, cultural studies and other professionals interested in contemporary events. ** Review " The Absolute Power Complex from Constantine to Stalin is one of those concentrated essays which can really open our eyes more than entire treaties. It points to profound, ‘hard’ archetypes which can penetrate cultures and determine history. Why, for instance, during the Cold War era in Europe was the Italian left monopolized by the Communist Party and not a Western-style socialist one? Mino Vianello explains how unconscious, ‘monopolistic’ patterns of thought, inherited during millennia from the Church, might have played a role deeper than the existence of the Soviet Union." – Luigi Zoja, former president of the International Association of Analytical Psychology and author "Mino Vianello’s new book explains cultural and political differences among European countries, with a basic assumption that the differences are rooted in religion. Unlike Weber in the case of the birth of Protestantism in Western Europe, Vianello argues that the sources of differences among European countries are in a deep past, in the fourth century. As he writes on looking for roots of political systems in non-Protestant parts of Europe: ‘Constantine promoted a theological-political construction imbued with Neoplatonic concepts and Roman Law categories that led to a dogmatic, state-imposed doctrine totally alien to the Gospels and ignored in the Christian world up to the end of the second century, a doctrine that in the course of time shaped psychologically the peoples’ mind to submission and lack of responsibility. The heritage of the fourth century is the main hub of the Collective Unconscious that characterizes both the Catholic and the Orthodox worlds.’ "Vianello analyzes political and cultural traits in the part of Europe where Catholic and Orthodox religions are still predominant. He traces developments over centuries, arguing that Jung’s theories help to explain the propensity of the mentality of societies living in these countries. The Collective Unconscious born there was a good ground for the creation of ideologies which justified later authoritarian political systems and control over the lives of people in private and public spheres. The close relations between religious institutions and state institutions over centuries gave way in the twentieth century to the birth of fascism and communism, systems in which religious institutions were replaced by non-religious ones and expected public support because they represented the ‘truth’. In this way, they resembled religious institutions. The author describes in detail the deconstruction of Marx’s theory: the theory created in Western ideological, social, and political contexts was deconstructed by Lenin, Stalin, and others to adapt its tenets to Russian cultural, social, political, and economic context, taking it far from its original version. I believe that readers will find the book interesting and a good starting point for discussion and further studies of historical trajectories." – Renata Siemieńska, Professor at the R.B. Zajonc Institute for Social Studies, University of Warsaw, and the Institute of Social Applied Sciences, M.Grzegorzewska University, Warsaw, Poland The new book by Professor Mino Vianello on the historical legacy and the political culture tradition inherited from the transformation of Catholicism in 325 ce under the Roman Emperor Constantine, has the meaning of a monumental revision of the roots of the concept of the Absolute Power Complex, whose influence on the countries between the Iberian Peninsula and the Urals left authoritarian marks deep in the practices of their political elites and their populations. In reality, it left undemocratic marks because of the requirement of complete subordination of individuals to the powers derived from the tradition, despite the fact that these countries claimed to be democracies. "However perhaps the most revolutionary theoretical contribution of this book is the author ́s hypothesis around the psychological roots of the concept of absolute power. Vianello recurs to Jung’s theory of the 'Collective Unconscious' to explain the existing difference in the West between, on one hand, societies where the value of freedom has become a central component of the political tradition as demonstrated by the nature of their democratic institutions, the Rule of Law, and the proclamation of human rights; and on the other hand, societies where this simply did not happen, due to the imposition – as a mere political motivated decision – of Christianity as the State Religion. After this, for a long period of time, the Church and the State operated together, according to a conception of the subordination of the members of the political community to the absolute power. Vianello links this conception to central features of Jung’s notion of the Collective Unconscious, which in the final analysis would explain why it is so difficult for some societies to evolve in a radical democratic term. "My impression is that this book opens a completely new theoretical avenue for the understanding of some contemporary political tendencies, which are related to the undemocratic features of emerging neo-populist and right-wing governments. In this sense, the book is an enormous contribution to new areas of interests for political science and political sociology." – José Álvaro Moisés, Professor at the Department of Political Science and Senior Professor of the Institute of Advanced Studies, University of São Paulo, Brazil** About the Author Mino Vianello , University of Rome "La Sapienza". Former editor of the Revue Internationale de Sociologie (1987–2005), Descartes Prize for Social Sciences in 2000 for Women and Men in Political and Business Elites - A Comparative Study in Twenty Seven Industrial Countries. Vianello has concentrated his research over the last forty years on the issue of gender and power and has authored several books that have been translated into the main languages.

British Gothic Cinema Barry Forshaw Palgrave Macmillan, The Palgrave Gothic series, Basingstoke, 2013
From the films produced by the Hammer studios and their rivals in the 1940s and 1950s, to the films of the 21st century and their current popularity, Forshaw provides a definitive, wide-ranging study of British horror cinema. Beginning with a lively discussion of the great literary antecedents, British Gothic Cinema discusses the flowering of the genre in the middle of the 20th century and the headline-grabbing critical and establishment revulsion over the unprecedented levels of violence and sexuality. It also explores the rude health of the field and its continuing influence. With enthusiasm and scholarship, Forshaw celebrates the British cinema's long love affair with the Gothic and the macabre, both persevering characteristics of modern film and television.

Jawbreaker's 24 hour revenge therapy: (or, the strange death of selling out) Givony, Ronen Bloomsbury Academic, Bloomsbury Publishing Inc, 33 1/3 -- 130, 33 1/3 -- 130., New York State, 2018
Two and a half decades on, Jawbreaker's 24 Hour Revenge Therapy (1993-94) is the rare album to have lost none of its original loyalty, affection, and reverence. If anything, today, the cult of Jawbreaker-in their own words, "the little band that could but would probably rather not"-is now many times greater than it was when they broke up in 1996. Like the best work of Fugazi, The Clash, and Operation Ivy, the album is now is a rite of passage and a beloved classic among partisans of intelligent, committed, literary punk music and poetry. Why, when a thousand other artists came and went in that confounding decade of the 90s, did Jawbreaker somehow come to seem like more than just another band? Why do they persist, today, in meaning so much to so many people? And how did it happen that, two years after releasing their masterpiece, the band that was somehow more than just a band to its fans-closer to equipment for living-was no longer? Ronen Givony's 24 Hour Revenge Therapy is an extended tribute in the spirit of Nicholson Baker's U & I : a passionate, highly personal, and occasionally obsessive study of one of the great confessional rock albums of the 90s. At the same time, it offers a quizzical look back to the toxic authenticity battles of the decade, ponders what happened to the question of "selling out," and asks whether we today are enriched or impoverished by that debate becoming obsolete. ** About the Author Ronen Givony is the founder/producer of New York's Wordless Music series and orchestra (wordlessmusic.org), which has presented concerts around the world with artists from the sound worlds of so-called classical and contemporary music since 2006, and was named by the Village Voice as New York's "Best Moderately Snooty Concert Series." upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/Schizoanalysis and Animal Scien - Helena Pedersen.epub
Schizoanalysis and Animal Science Education Helena Pedersen; Bloomsbury UK, Bloomsbury UK, London, UK, 2019
Within the education system, acts of violence toward animals take place and are manifested on a routine basis in science classes, in lecture halls, in school canteens, and during study visits to zoos, farms, and slaughterhouses. Taken for granted as ”necessary” for teaching and learning, this violence profoundly affects animals as well as students. It also provides new entry points for understanding education as a multispecies power regime, driven by numerous other investments than knowledge dissemination alone. What, then, is the nature of this educational violence, and how exactly does education work through techniques of interference with student and animal bodies? Based on ethnographic research within upper secondary schools and higher education, this book challenges the use of animals in education by innovative engagement of Deleuze and Guattari's tool of schizoanalysis. Sparking a fundamental rethinking of educational processes, relations, and aims, the book explores how scientific knowledge about animals proliferates through complex interplay of power and desire in contested spaces of teaching and learning. Configuring animal science education as a set of machines working in tandem with the animal industry, Helena Pedersen offers radical new insights into how education forms subjectivities and social orders under conditions of capitalist expansion that capture students and animals alike. Bringing together education studies, science studies, critical animal studies, and continental philosophy, Pedersen also provides examples of disruptive action that can put education to work for transformation and liberation. ** About the Author Helena Pedersen is Associate Professor of Education at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and the author of Animals in Schools (2010).* *

The Happiness of Blond People: A Personal Meditation on the Dangers of Identity (Penguin Specials) Shafak, Elif Penguin Books, Limited, Penguin special, New York, New York, 2011
The Happiness of Blond People by bestselling, multi-award-winning novelist Elif Shafak, author of The Bastard of Istanbul , is a powerful essay on immigration, multiculturalism and the experience of Muslims in Europe - available only as a Penguin Short. "You know, I never understand. How come their children are so quiet and well disciplined?" "Yeah," said the distressed father, his voice suddenly softer. "Blond children never cry, do they?" As Elif Shafak stands in line at the airport, she overhears a Turkish father expressing to a friend his bewilderment at the cultural differences he's experienced since immigrating to northern Europe. Is it true, she wonders, that the citizens of these countries are genuinely happier? Why do people leave their homes for other countries? And what lessons can we all learn, for the creation of truly harmonious societies, from the experiences of immigrants? In the light of the recent backlash against multiculturalism and the influx of millions of Muslims into Europe from the east, this powerful and personal essay uses the lived experience of immigrants to examine this most hotly debated subject. Elif Shafak is the acclaimed author of the award-winning The Gaze and The Bastard of Istanbul and is the foremost female author in Turkey. She is a contributor for the Telegraph , Guardian and The New York Times and her TED talk on the politics of fiction has received over 300,000 views since July 2010. She is the recipient of nine prestigious international honours and awards including the Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres, long-listing for the Orange Prize for Fiction and the Maria Grazia Cutuli Award. She is married with two children and divides her time between Istanbul and the UK.

Collected poems Sujata Bhatt Carcanet Press Ltd., Poetry Book Society special commendation, 2013
This book gathers four decades of writing, published in collections from Brunizem in 1988 to Pure Lizard in 2008. It maps the poet's trajectory, following her exile from her homeland, India, and her mother tongue, Gujarati, to the landscapes and languages of the USA and then Europe. Urgent, compassionate and inventive, Bhatt's work forms a uniquely sustained project of reinvention and rediscovery. Here is a chance to see Sujata Bhatt's favourite themes strengthened by re-gathering. A common theme is language, the very stuff of poetry, given special insight by her travels and her multilingual experience. In India, she says, it is a sin to be rude to a book'; The Stare'considers two babies, human and monkey, gazing at each other curiously, one with language, the other with... who knows? Elsewhere she considers the loss of her mother tongue, dead'in her mouth but returning to her in dreams. A broad-minded, humane, imaginative book.--Gillian Clarke, National Poet of WalesSujata Bhatt leads the reader through the bright, familiar world and on into the dark until her words pierce that darkness, offering a light that will challenge and reward. Here are poems that move confidently through that dangerous border-world between the real and the surreal, illuminating both. This book is a treasure-house of modern, magical poems.--John F. Deane

Colonial Suspects: Suspicion, Imperial Rule, and Colonial Society in Interwar French West Africa (France Overseas: Studies in Empire and Decolonization) Kathleen A Keller University of Nebraska Press, France overseas: studies in empire and decolonization, Lincoln, 2018
A Vietnamese cook, a German journalist, and a Senegalese student—what did they have in common? They were all suspicious persons kept under surveillance by French colonial authorities in West Africa in the 1920s and 1930s. Colonial Suspects  looks at the web of surveillance set up by the French government during the twentieth century as France’s empire slipped into crisis. As French West Africa and the French Empire more generally underwent fundamental transformations during the interwar years, French colonial authorities pivoted from a stated policy of “assimilation” to that of “association.” Surveillance of both colonial subjects and visitors traveling through the colonies increased in scope. The effect of this change in policy was profound: a “culture of suspicion” became deeply ingrained in French West African society. Kathleen Keller notes that the surveillance techniques developed over time by the French included “shadowing, postal control, port police, informants, denunciations, home searches, and gossip.” This ad hoc approach to colonial surveillance mostly proved ineffectual, however, and French colonies became transitory spaces where a global cast of characters intermixed and French power remained precarious. Increasingly, French officials—in the colonies and at home—reacted in short-sighted ways as both perceived and real backlash occurred with respect to communism, pan-Africanism, anticolonialism, black radicalism, and pan-Islamism. Focusing primarily on the port city of Dakar (Senegal), Keller unravels the threads of intrigue, rumor, and misdirection that informed this chaotic period of French colonial history. ** Review “ Colonial Suspects explores the obsessive French colonial preoccupation with constructing otherness, monitoring outsiders, and persecuting those at the poorest margins of white society. From high-profile criminal cases to intimate lives, the book offers a fine-grained perspective on the culture of suspicion pervading the policing of subversion—real and imagined—within France’s West African colonies after World War I.”—Martin Thomas, professor of history at the University of Exeter and author of Empires of Intelligence: Security Services and Colonial Disorder after 1914 (Martin Thomas 2017-09-19) “ Colonial Suspects breaks new ground and has compelling tie-ins to current debates over surveillance that will resonate with students and academics in the field. One of the most exciting things about it is how it shows that interwar French West Africa was in some ways a global crossroads.”—Elizabeth A. Foster, associate professor of history at Tufts University and the author of Faith in Empire: Religion, Politics, and Colonial Rule in French Senegal, 1880–1940 (Elizabeth A. Foster 2017-09-19) About the Author Kathleen Keller is an associate professor of history at Gustavus Adolphus College. Rewriting Franco's Spain : Marcel Proust and the dissident novelists of memory O’Donoghue, Samuel Bucknell University Press ; The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, Inc, Lewisburg, Lanham, Maryland, 2018
Rewriting Franco’s Spain: Marcel Proust and the Dissident Novelists of Memory proposes a new reading of some of the most culturally significant and closely studied works of Spanish memory fiction from the past seventy years. It examines the influence of French writer Marcel Proust on fiction concerning the Spanish Civil War and Franco’s dictatorship by Carmen Laforet, Juan Goytisolo, Juan Benet, Carmen Martín Gaite, Jorge Semprún, and Javier Marías. It explores the ways in which À la recherche du temps perdu has been instrumental in these authors’ works, galvanizing their creative impetus, shaping their imaginative act, and guiding their adversarial stance toward Franco’s regime. This book illustrates how these writers use Proustian themes and techniques and thereby enhances our understanding of the function of memory and fictional creation in some of the most important milestones in contemporary Spanish literature. Rewriting Franco’s Spain argues that an appreciation of Proust’s pervasive influence on Spanish memory writing obliges us to reconsider the notion that Franco’s regime maintained a rigid stranglehold on imported culture. Capturing the richness of Spanish novelists’ contact with literature produced outside of Spain, it challenges the prevailing scholarly tendency to focus on the novelists’ immediate sociopolitical concerns. There is more to these texts than a simple testimony of the brutality and hardship of the civil war and life under Franco. By illuminating the subversive nature of Spanish novelists’ use of a Proust-inspired practice of self-writing, Rewriting Franco’s Spain seeks to readjust some of the ways we view the role of novelists living during the regime and in its wake. It advocates a conception of novelists as dissidents, teasing out the seditious undercurrent of their cultivation of self-writing and examining how they disputed the regime’s ideas about what culture should look like. The preconception that the development of Spanish literature under Franco was stunted because Spaniards were prevented from reading works considered an affront to National-Catholic sensibilities is cast aside, as is the notion that Spain was isolated from narrative developments elsewhere. Rewriting Franco’s Spain ultimately reveals the centrality of Proust’s monumental novel in the evolution of contemporary Spanish literature.

ENGLISH POLITENESS AND CLASS SARA MILLS Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), Cambridge University Press, New York, 2017
Politeness plays a vital role in maintaining class differences. In this highly original account, Sara Mills analyses the interrelationship between class and linguistic interaction, uncovering the linguistic ideologies behind politeness in British English. She sheds light on the way politeness and rudeness interrelate with the marking of class boundaries, and reveals how middle-class positions in society are marked by people's use of self-deprecation, indirectness and reserve. Systematically challenging received wisdom about cross-cultural and inter-cultural differences, she goes beyond the mere context of the interaction to investigate the social dimension of politeness. This approach enables readers to analyse other languages in the same way, and a range of case studies illustrate how ideologies of politeness are employed and judged.

Fatal path : British government and Irish revolution, 1910-1922 Fanning, Ronan Faber & Faber, Limited, London, 2013
This is a magisterial narrative of the most turbulent decade in Anglo-Irish history: a decade of unleashed passions that came close to destroying the parliamentary system and to causing civil war in the United Kingdom. It was also the decade of the cataclysmic Great War, of an officers' mutiny in an elite cavalry regiment of the British Army and of Irish armed rebellion. It was a time, argues Ronan Fanning, when violence and the threat of violence trumped democratic politics. This is a contentious view. Historians have wished to see the events of that decade as an aberration, as an eruption of irrational bloodletting. And they have have been reluctant to write about the triumph of physical force. Fanning argues that in fact violence worked, however much this offends our contemporary moral instincts. Without resistance from the Ulster Unionists and its very real threat of violence the state of Northern Ireland would never have come into being. The Home Rule party of constitutionalist nationalists failed, and were pushed aside by the revolutionary nationalists Sinn Fein. Bleakly realistic, ruthlessly analytical of the vacillation and indecision displayed by democratic politicians at Westminster faced with such revolutionary intransigence, Fatal Path is history as it was, not as we would wish it to be. ** Review Ronan Fanning ... has crowned his career with this lapidary work. It is beautifully written, compellingly argued, gleaming with clarity as he confidently makes his way through a story of confusion, deceit and denial lightened by rare glimpses of honest men doing their best. -- James Downey Irish Independent Absorbing [and] fascinating. -- John-Paul McCarthy Sunday Independent 'In his splendid new book on Britain's Irish policy in these formative years, Ronan Fanning stresses that his topic is not Anglo-Irish relations in the round but Britain's policy towards Ireland. Yet if this is essentially a study in British history, it is also required reading for students of Irish history because of the way it illuminates our perspectives on the mode of British decision-making through which the Irish Free State and Northern Ireland emerged ... a compelling read. -- Joe Lee Irish Times This book provides valuable insights into the British government's attitude towards the Irish Revolution. -- Ryle Dwyer Irish Examiner About the Author Ronan Fanning is a Member of the Royal Irish Academy, and Professor Emeritus of Modern History at University College Dublin. Among his books are the definitive history of the Irish Department of Finance and a remarkable biography (co-written with Michael Lillis) of Eliza Lynch, wife of the 19th century Paraguayan dictator Francisco Solano Lopez. More recently, he has been one of the chief editors of the Dictionary of Irish Biography.

The Writer's Diet: A Guide to Fit Prose (Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing) Helen Sword The University of Chicago Press, University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 2016
Do your sentences sag? Could your paragraphs use a pick-me-up? If so, The Writer’s Diet is for you! It’s a short, sharp introduction to great writing that will help you energize your prose and boost your verbal fitness. Helen Sword dispenses with excessive explanations and overwrought analysis. Instead, she offers an easy-to-follow set of writing principles: use active verbs whenever possible; favor concrete language over vague abstractions; avoid long strings of prepositional phrases; employ adjectives and adverbs only when they contribute something new to the meaning of a sentence; and reduce your dependence on four pernicious “waste words”: it, this, that, and there. Sword then shows the rules in action through examples from William Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, Martin Luther King Jr., John McPhee, A. S. Byatt, Richard Dawkins, Alison Gopnik, and many more. A writing fitness test encourages you to assess your own writing and get immediate advice on addressing problem areas. While The Writer’s Diet is as sleek and concise as the writing ideals contained within, this slim volume packs a powerful punch. With Sword’s coaching writers of all levels can strengthen and tone their sentences with the stroke of a pen or the click of a mouse. As with any fitness routine, adhering to the rules requires energy and vigilance. The results, however, will speak for themselves. ** Review “Who says nutritious material must be bland? This short book is packed with excellent advice on writing, offered with charm and good cheer.” (Steven Pinker, Johnstone Professor of Psychology, Harvard University, and author of The Sense of Style: The Thinking Person’s Guide to Writing in the 21st Century) “Even the leanest and most muscular stylists can end up with jiggly bits in their prose. With Sword as your coach, and The Writer’s Diet as your training manual, you can slim down, tone up, and become a more energetic, engaging, and lively writer.” (Rachel Toor, columnist for The Chronicle of Higher Education and associate professor of creative writing at Eastern Washington University) About the Author Helen Sword is professor and director of the Centre for Learning and Research in Higher Education at the University of Auckland. She is the author, most recently, of Stylish Academic Writing and manages the website www.writersdiet.com.

Durkheim, the Durkheimians, and the Arts (Publications of the Durkheim Press, 0) Alexander Tristan Riley; William Watts Miller; W. S. F. Pickering Berghahn Books, Berghahn Books, New York, 2013
Using a broad definition of the Durkheimian tradition, this book offers the first systematic attempt to explore the Durkheimians’ engagement with art. It focuses on both Durkheim and his contemporaries as well as later thinkers influenced by his work. The first five chapters consider Durkheim’s own exploration of art; the remaining six look at other Durkheimian thinkers, including Marcel Mauss, Henri Hubert, Maurice Halbwachs, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Michel Leiris, and Georges Bataille. The contributors―scholars from a range of theoretical orientations and disciplinary perspectives―are known for having already produced significant contributions to the study of Durkheim. This book will interest not only scholars of Durkheim and his tradition but also those concerned with aesthetic theory and the sociology and history of art. **

Gilbert Simondon : information, technology, and media Simon Mills (Senior Lecturer) Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Incorporated, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, London, 2016
Gilbert Simondon: Information, Technology and Media is a comprehensive introduction to the work of the French philosopher Gilbert Simondon. In particular it examines Simondon's original informational ontology, as developed from a synthesis of Cybernetics, thermodynamics and French epistemology, The book goes on to delineate the role this ontology plays in developing an original account of individuation in the physical, biological and psycho-social regimes. This is done, in part, through reading Simondon with and against other figures in these fields such as Merleau-Ponty and Stuart Kauffman. Additionally, Mills explores Simondon's contribution to epistemology and invention, including an analysis of his important theories of the image-cycle and transindividuality. He also examines Simondon's influence on several contemporary thinkers, including Bernard Stiegler and Bruno Latour, before exploring the relevance of Simondon's work for theorising contemporary media technology. ** Review The object of this remarkable book is as clear as it is relevant —to provide the English-speaking readership with a complete and objective presentation of Gilbert Simondon’s philosophy of individuation and technology. Gilbert Simondon: Information, Technology and Media is a truly innovative study, which shows how to rethink the concept of information in an increasingly complex socio-technological system. (Vincent K. Bontems, Director of the Atelier Simondon) Simon Mills’s book is a timely and valuable introduction to Gilbert Simondon’s theory of information and individuation. Despite the fact that Simondon’s philosophy is steadily gaining more attention and recognition worldwide, English translations have been slow in coming; this book thus fills a gap in the Anglophone scholarship and will surely be a helpful English resource for those interested in understanding Simondonian concepts and the significance of Simondon’s thought for Continental Philosophy and Media Studies. (Nandita Biswas Mellamphy, Associate Professor of Poitical Science, Western University) About the Author Simon Mills is Senior Lecturer in New Media at De Montfort University. He has published articles in a number of academic journals, including Media, Culture and Society. Metaphysics Critical Theory Media Studies Social Science Philosophy Movements

Holding Bankers to Account : A Decade of Market Manipulation, Regulatory Failures and Regulatory Reforms Oonagh McDonald CBE Manchester University Press, Manchester University Press, Manchester, 2019
This book provides a compelling account of the rigging of benchmarks during and after the financial crisis of 2007-08. Written in clear language accessible to the non-specialist, it provides the historical context necessary for understanding the benchmarks - LIBOR, FOREX and the Gold and Silver Fixes - and shows how and why they have to be reformed in the face of rapid technological changes in markets. Though banks have been fined and a few traders have been jailed, justice will not be done until senior bankers are made responsible for their actions. Provocative and rigorously argued, this book makes concrete recommendations for improving the security of the financial services industry and holding bankers to account. -- Provided by publisher

Griffiths, Robert Imre Palgrave Macmillan US : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, Marxism and education, First edition, New York City, NY, 2013
By presenting a series of intricate analyses of educational phenomena through the theoretical lenses offered by Immanuel Wallerstein and István Mészáros, the book engages readers and helps them to critically analyze their own participation in the global economy, as citizens, policy-makers, and academics or teachers. ** Review "I loved this book! It is so valuable and clearly written! Mass Education, Global Capital, and the World highlights the intense relevance of Wallerstein's and Mészáros's work to those of us within the Marxist and the critical pedagogy traditions seeking democratic and just systemic alternatives to capitalism and to education within and against capitalism." Dave Hill, Research Professor of Education at Anglia Ruskin University, UK, and Marxist educational and political activist "This volume illuminates the scholarship of two major theorists of the capitalist world-system, who examine its evolution over the past 500 years and its uncertain future. The historical, holistic social science perspectives of Immanuel Wallerstein and István Mészáros provide essential analytical tools for understanding the structures and processes by which the global economy generates the current international crises in economies and societies. More than that, as this invaluable book highlights, world-systems analysis provides the comprehensive long view that enables educators and researchers to envision alternative futures that are more democratic, peaceful, and globally just." The Women of Cairo: Scenes of Life on the Orient, Volume 1 Nerval, Gérard De , 1808-1855 New York : AMS Press, [1982?], Repr. [d. Ausg.] London 1929, New York, 1982
The Women of Cario, Scenes of Life in the Orient is a travel book by French Romanticist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%A9rard_de_Nerval) Gerard de Nerval , first published in 1846. It describes a 1-year trip to Cairo, Egypt and other places in the Ottoman Empire. In the 18th and 19th centuries the Islamic Orient was a great mystery to Europeans giving rise to myths fueled by tales in the Arabian Nights. There were myths about the Harem, the oriental despot, the mysteries of Egypt ("Look Upon My Works, Ye Mighty, And Despair"), the stories of the Crusades, oriental virgins and slaves, etc. Romantic-era authors such as Lord Byron, Shelley, Walter Scott, Coleridge, Thomas Quincey (opium eater) and so on lived out the myth of the Orient in works and person. Nerval was central in that tradition and his journey is revealing for its myth-making and myth-busting. The first volume of this unabridged translation centers mostly on Cairo. Before leaving Europe, Nerval had been dumped by his love interest, an actress. Arriving in Egypt, Nerval begins searching for a new female companion, which legally could only be achieved through marriage. He ends up buying a slave woman who is from India, but not before going on one adventure after the next trying to find (or buy) his new mate in the warrens of Cairo. It's a fascinating look at old customs, largely hidden from public view, some of which are funny (Nerval has been compared with Charlie Chaplin) and other scenes are disturbing (the sale of pre-pubescent girls to amuse the buyers "darkest desires"). Nerval describes scenes in flowery romanticized imagery, but also dispels some myths about harems and slaves. As it turns out women have much more control over their lives, even the slave girl pushes Nerval around and balks at the idea she might be set free (a terrible fate in her mind since she would then have to actually work for a living). Other memorable scenes are climbing the Great Pyramids with the help of four Bedouins, two on top who pulled your arms and two on bottom who push upward, block after block, until you reach the top. There were no other tourists around. The Sphinx still laid mostly buried in the sand. A book filled with fascinating little details of Egypt before the modern era.

Colonial Suspects: Suspicion, Imperial Rule, and Colonial Society in Interwar French West Africa (France Overseas: Studies in Empire and Decolonization) Kathleen A Keller University of Nebraska Press (Mare Nostrum), France Overseas: Studies in Empire and Decolonization, Erscheinungsort nicht ermittelbar, 2018
A Vietnamese cook, a German journalist, and a Senegalese student—what did they have in common? They were all suspicious persons kept under surveillance by French colonial authorities in West Africa in the 1920s and 1930s. __Colonial Suspects__ looks at the web of surveillance set up by the French government during the twentieth century as France’s empire slipped into crisis.

Schizoanalysis and Animal Science Education Helena Pedersen; Bloomsbury Publishing Plc ProQuest, Bloomsbury UK, London, UK, 2019

Alien Agency: Experimental Encounters with Art in the Making (The MIT Press) Chris Salter, Andrew Pickering The MIT Press, MIT Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 2015
An investigation into what happens in creative practice when the materials of art and research behave and perform in ways beyond the creators'intentions. In Alien Agency, Chris Salter tells three stories of art in the making. Salter examines three works in which the materials of art—the “stuff of the world”—behave and perform in ways beyond the creator's intent, becoming unknown, surprising, alien. Studying these works—all three deeply embroiled in and enabled by science and technology—allows him to focus on practice through the experiential and affective elements of creation. Drawing on extensive ethnographic observation and on his own experience as an artist, Salter investigates how researcher-creators organize the conditions for these experimental, performative assemblages—assemblages that sidestep dichotomies between subjects and objects, human and nonhuman, mind and body, knowing and experiencing.Salter reports on the sound artists Bruce Odland and Sam Auinger (O+A) and their efforts to capture and then project unnoticed urban sounds; tracks the multi-year project TEMA (Tissue Engineered Muscle Actuators) at the art research lab SymbioticA and its construction of a hybrid “semi-living” machine from specially grown mouse muscle cells; and describes a research-creation project (which he himself initiated) that uses light, vibration, sound, smell, and other sensory stimuli to enable audiences to experience other cultures'“ways of sensing.” Combining theory, diary, history, and ethnography, Salter also explores a broader question: How do new things emerge into the world and what do they do?

Bending toward justice : the Birmingham church bombing that changed the course of civil rights Doug Jones St. Martin's Press, First edition, New York, 2019
On September 15, 1963, the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL was bombed, killing four young girls. It was clear that white supremacists were responsible. The community activists who gathered at the church had recently succeeded in desegregating Birmingham public schools, and this was an act of revenge. The girls did not die in vain; the public outrage brought on by this senseless tragedy was crucial to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. But who were the perpetrators? Alabamians would have to wait a long time to find out. Due to reluctant witnesses and racial prejudice, the FBI closed the case without any indictments. But as Martin Luther King, Jr. famously claimed, "the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." When William Baxley became state Attorney General years later, he reopened the case, ultimately convicting one of the bombers in 1977. Another suspect passed away in 1994, and author Doug Jones himself prosecuted...
