On Evil Terry Eagleton Yale University Press, Yale University Press, New Haven, 2010
<p><p>for Many Enlightened, Liberal-minded Thinkers Today, And For Most On The Political Left, Evil Is An Outmoded Concept.&#160; It Smacks Too Much Of Absolute Judgments And Metaphysical Certainties To Suit The Modern Age.&#160; In This Witty, Accessible Study, The Prominent Marxist Thinker Terry Eagleton Launches A Surprising Defense Of The Reality Of Evil, Drawing On Literary, Theological, And Psychoanalytic Sources To Suggest That Evil, No Mere Medieval Artifact, Is A Real Phenomenon With Palpable Force In Our Contemporary World.<p>in A Book That Ranges From St. Augustine To Alcoholism, Thomas Aquinas To Thomas Mann, Shakespeare To The Holocaust, Eagleton Investigates The Frightful Plight Of Those Doomed Souls Who Apparently Destroy For No Reason.&#160; In The Process, He Poses A Set Of Intriguing Questions.&#160; Is Evil Really A Kind Of Nothingness?&#160; Why Should It Appear So Glamorous And Seductive?&#160; Why Does Goodness Seem So Boring?&#160; Is It Really Possible For Human Beings To Delight In Destruction For No Reason At All?</p><h3>publishers Weekly</h3><p>an Engaging If Ultimately Unsatisfactory Argument In Favor Of The Reality Of Evil By One Of Britain's Most Distinguished Marxist Literary Critics. Analyzing Some Of Western Literature's Major Pronouncements On Evil From Thomas Aquinas To William Golding, Eagleton (reason, Faith And Revolution) Pieces Together What He Sees As The Defining Features Of Evil In A Rather Unsystematic Way, Before Grounding His Own Vision Of Evil In Freud's Notion Of The Death Drive, Describing Evildoers As Suffering From &ldquo;an Unbearable Sense Of Non-being&rdquo; Which Must &ldquo;be Taken Out On The Other.&rdquo; Despite Its Undeniably Enjoyable Verve And Wit, The Book's Claims Are Undermined By A Rather Arbitrary Use Of Source Material As Well As A Belated And Inadequate Articulation Of Its Major Theoretical Claim. Muddy Talk About Different Levels Of Evil And An Undeveloped But Evidently Important Distinction Between Wickedness And Evil Suggest That The Author's Notions On The Topic Would Be Better Served By A Larger, More Sustained Work. Nonetheless, As An Attempt To Take Seriously The Reality Of Extreme Wrongdoing Without Recourse To Either Religiously Grounded Certitudes Or A Total Sociological Determinism, It Offers A Promising Alternative. Milestones in murder : defining moments in Ulster's terror war Hugh Jordan Mainstream Publishing Company, Limited, London, 2011
Beginning with the death of legendary IRA figure Sean South of Garryowen on New Year's Day 1957, the book describes the background to what we have now come to call 'the troubles' and paints vivid portraits of the major players whose actions sparked the violence that erupted on the streets of Belfast and Derry in the summer of 1969. Throughout the decades of bloodshed, paramilitary leaders on both sides of the political divide continued to search for more so-called legitimate targets. Milestones in Murder charts how more and more innocent people were unwittingly drawn into the conflict against their will. It examines the killings which marked new lows in the republican/loyalist terror war, from the bombing of pubs and clubs to the advent of 'human bomb' couriers. It revisits the horrific murders of the Shankhill Butchers, exclusively revealing exactly who leader Lennie Murphy's accomplices were. This, amongst other revelations, will piece together several parts of the Irish warfare jigsaw for the first time. The book also covers the more recent murder of the author's colleague Martin O'Hagan, an act which sent shock waves through a battle-hardened media in Northern Ireland. O'Hagan was the first journalist in Ireland to lose his life at the hands of the paramilitaries and his death pushed the parameters of slaughter to new limits.

Spate : a navigational theory of networks Eduardo Navas; Institute of Network Cultures (Amsterdam, Netherlands) Institute of Network Cultures, Deep pockets, #1, Amsterdam, 2016
'The New Aesthetic and Art: Constellations of the Postdigital' is an interdisciplinary analysis focusing on new digital phenomena at the intersections of theory and contemporary art. Asserting the unique character of New Aesthetic objects, Contreras-Koterbay and Mirocha trace the origins of the New Aesthetic in visual arts, design, and software, find its presence resonating in various kinds of digital imagery, and track its agency in everyday effects of the intertwined physical world and the digital realm. Contreras-Koterbay and Mirocha bring to light an original perspective that identifies an autonomous quality in common digital objects and examples of art that are increasingly an important influence for today's culture and society. Influenced by a diverse range of figures, ranging from Vilém Flusser, Arthur Schopenhauer, Immanuel Kant, David Berry, Lev Manovich, Olga Goriunova, Ernst Mayr, Bruce Sterling and, of course, James Bridle, 'The New Aesthetic and Art: Constellations of the Postdigital' doesn’t just propose a description of a new set of objects but radically asserts that New Aesthetic objects analogously function as organisms within a broader digital-physical ecosystems of things and agents. internet, web, net, institute of network cultures, digital, media, research, network, culture, Scott Contreras-Koterbay, Łukasz Mirocha, aesthetic, arts, postdigital, design, software, visual arts, society, objects, ecosystem, effects, glitch, products, artwork, artist, digital art, beauty

Goddess Traditions in Tantric Hinduism: History, Practice and Doctrine (Routledge Studies in Tantric Traditions) Bjarne Wernicke Olesen Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2016
Hinduism cannot be understood without the Great Goddess and the goddess-orientated Śākta traditions. The Goddess pervades Hinduism at all levels, from aniconic village deities to high-caste pan-Hindu goddesses to esoteric, tantric goddesses. Nevertheless, the highly influential tantric forms of South Asian goddess worship have only recently begun to draw scholarly attention. This book addresses the increasing interest in the Great Goddess and the tantric traditions of India by exploring the history, doctrine and practices of the Śākta tantric traditions. The highly influential tantric forms of South Asian goddess worship form a major part of what is known as 'Śāktism', and is often considered one of the major branches of Hinduism next to Śaivism, Vaiṣṇavism and Smārtism. Śāktism is, however, less clearly defined than the other major branches, and the book looks at the texts of the Śākta traditions that constitute the primary sources for gaining insights into the Śākta religious imaginative, ritual practices and history. It provides an historical exploration of distinctive Indian ways of imagining God as Goddess, and surveys the important origins and developments within Śākta history, practice and doctrine in its diversity. Bringing together contributions from some of the foremost scholars in the field of tantric studies, the book provides a platform for the continued research into Hindu goddesses, yoga, and tantra for those interested in understanding the religion and culture in South Asia.

Captain Gill’s Walking Stick : The True Story of the Sinai Murders Saul Kelly I.B. Tauris; Bloomsbury, Bloomsbury UK, London, 2019
"At an auction in Edinburgh in 2010, the sale of an old walking stick belonging to a British officer, Captain Gill, shed new light on one of the mysterious crimes of the Victorian era. Captain William Gill and his companions, the noted Arabist Professor Edward Palmer of Cambridge University and a young naval lieutenant, Harold Charrington, were killed in an ambush by Bedouin in the Sinai Desert in 1883. The trio had been tasked with informal diplomacy in the region, specifically to prevent the Arab sheikhs from joining the Egyptian rebels and to secure their non-interference with the Suez Canal. The gruesome murders shocked late-Victorian Britain, and led to pressure from the Queen, Parliament and the Press for the British government to launch a manhunt for the killers in a vast desert area with mountainous terrain. This book traces the story behind the murder of the three men, uncovering the reason for their journey to the desert, the story of the murder itself and the backlash home in England. It shines light on a fascinating, forgotten crime, as well as on early intelligence operations in the Middle East."--Bloomsbury Publishing

The Bible on the Shakespearean Stage : Cultures of Interpretation in Reformation England Thomas Fulton and Kristen Poole Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), 2017
The Bible was everywhere in Shakespeare's England. Through sermons, catechisms, treatises, artwork, literature and, of course, biblical reading itself, the stories and language of the Bible pervaded popular and elite culture. In recent years, scholars have demonstrated how thoroughly biblical allusions saturate Shakespearean plays. But Shakespeare's audiences were not simply well versed in the Bible's content - they were also steeped in the practices and methods of biblical interpretation. Reformation and counter-reformation debate focused not just on the biblical text, but - crucially - on how to read the text. The Bible on the Shakespearean Stage is the first volume to integrate the study of Shakespeare's plays with the vital history of Reformation practices of biblical interpretation. Bringing together the foremost international scholars in the field of 'Shakespeare and the Bible', these essays explore Shakespeare's engagement with scriptural interpretation in the tragedies, histories, comedies, and romances. ** General Biblical Studies English; Irish; Scottish; Welsh Shakespeare Literary Criticism Religion Renaissance European Cover 1 Half-title page 3 Title page 5 Copyright page 6 Dedication 7 Contents 9 List of Illustrations 11 Notes on Contributors 12 Acknowledgments 17 Introduction: Popular Hermeneutics in Shakespeare’s London 19 I Europe, England: Contextualizing Shakespeare’s Bible 33 Chapter 1 The Bible in Transition in the Age of Shakespeare: A European Perspective 35 Chapter 2 The Trouble with Translation: Paratexts and England’s Bestselling New Testament 51 II Stagings: Reformation Reading Practices in the Theater 67 Chapter 3 John 6, Measure for Measure, and the Complexities of the Literal Sense 69 Chapter 4 Words of Diverse Significations: Hamlet’s Puns, Amphibology, and Allegorical Hermeneutics 87 Chapter 5 England’s Jerusalem in Shakespeare’s Henriad 105 Chapter 6 Discontented Harmonies: Words against Words in Pomfret Castle 121 III Interplay: Biblical Forms and Other Genres 137 Chapter 7 Titus Andronicus and the Rhetoric of Lamentation 139 Chapter 8 The Acts of Pericles: Shakespeare’s Biblical Romance 158 Chapter 9 Finding Pygmalion in the Bible: Classical and Biblical Allusion in The Winter’s Tale 174 IV Enactment: Hermeneutics and the Social 187 Chapter 10 Shylock in the Lion’s Den: Enacting Exegesis in The Merchant of Venice 189 Chapter 11 Maimed Rites and Whirling Words in Hamlet 206 Chapter 12 Political Theology from the Pulpit and the Stage: Sir Thomas More, Richard II, and Henry V 222 Afterword: Shakespeare’s Biblical Virtues 240 Notes 248 Index 303 Cover 1 Half-title page 3 Title page 5 Copyright page 6 Dedication 7 Contents 9 List of Illustrations 11 Notes on Contributors 12 Acknowledgments 17 Introduction: Popular Hermeneutics in Shakespeare’s London 19 I Europe, England: Contextualizing Shakespeare’s Bible 33 Chapter 1 The Bible in Transition in the Age of Shakespeare: A European Perspective 35 Chapter 2 The Trouble with Translation: Paratexts and England’s Bestselling New Testament 51 II Stagings: Reformation Reading Practices in the Theater 67 Chapter 3 John 6, Measure for Measure, and the Complexities of the Literal Sense 69 Chapter 4 Words of Diverse Significations: Hamlet’s Puns, Amphibology, and Allegorical Hermeneutics 87 Chapter 5 England’s Jerusalem in Shakespeare’s Henriad 105 Chapter 6 Discontented Harmonies: Words against Words in Pomfret Castle 121 III Interplay: Biblical Forms and Other Genres 137 Chapter 7 Titus Andronicus and the Rhetoric of Lamentation 139 Chapter 8 The Acts of Pericles: Shakespeare’s Biblical Romance 158 Chapter 9 Finding Pygmalion in the Bible: Classical and Biblical Allusion in The Winter’s Tale 174 IV Enactment: Hermeneutics and the Social 187 Chapter 10 Shylock in the Lion’s Den: Enacting Exegesis in The Merchant of Venice 189 Chapter 11 Maimed Rites and Whirling Words in Hamlet 206 Chapter 12 Political Theology from the Pulpit and the Stage: Sir Thomas More, Richard II, and Henry V 222 Afterword: Shakespeare’s Biblical Virtues 240 Notes 248 Index 303

The Adolescence of Zhenya Luvers Pasternak, Boris Philosophical Library/Open Road, 2012
An enthralling novelette by Boris Pasternak, the author of Dr. Zhivago, The Adolescence of Zhenya Luvers explores how a thirteen-year-old girl ceases to be a child and becomes a woman in Russia just before the Communist Revolution. The story examines the world through the reminiscences of a young girl and explores such themes as nature and how we are able to shape the world around us by how we perceive it. The novelette gives readers a prime example of Pasternak{u2019}s signature style and use of poetics, imagery, and lyricism in prose. The Adolescence of Zhenya Luvers is one of Pasternak{u2019}s very first stories, and it originally appeared in a collection by the same name, published in 1925

Human Security and Migration in Europe's Southern Borders (Politics of Citizenship and Migration) Susana Ferreira Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, Cham, 2018
This book examines the management of migratory flows in the Mediterranean within an international security perspective. The intense migratory flows registered during the year 2015 and the tragedies in the Mediterranean Sea have tested the mechanisms of the Union’s immigration and asylum policies and its ability to respond to humanitarian crises. Moreover, these flows of varying intensities and geographies represent a threat to the internal security of the EU and its member states. By using Spain and Italy as case studies, the author theorizes that the EU, given its inability to adopt and implement a common policy to effectively manage migratory flows on its Southern border, uses a deterrence strategy based on minimum common denominators. ** Review “Positioned at the intersection between security and international studies, this book examines one of the most challenging issues in contemporary Europe: the protection vs. restriction dilemma at the heart of international migration governance. This excellent and timely analysis advocates adopting minimum standards regarding irregular migration that will help protect the lives (and rights) of migrants.” (Ana López-Sala, Institute of Economics, Geography and Demography, The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), Spain) “This is a very timely book on a highly relevant topic which provides a useful analysis and a broad overview of the complex institutional settings of border management in Italy and Spain.” (Cláudia Finotelli, Complutense University of Madrid, Spain) Susana Ferreira  is Researcher at the Portuguese Institute of International Relations (IPRI), NOVA University of Lisbon, Portugal, and the Research Centre on Security and Defense, Portuguese Military University Institute (CISDIUM).

Protector Laurel Dewey [Dewey, Laurel] The Story Plant, Jane Perry Mysteries #1, 2009
SUMMARY:Here is the gut-wrenching, heartrending story of hard-bitten Denver homicide detective Jane Perry and nine-year-old Emily Lawrence. Emily has witnessed the murder of her parents — murders authorities believe have ties to a larger wave of crime. But Emily can’t recall a thing about the killings. When the murderers come after Emily, Jane’s boss sends the two of them to a remote town in Colorado. There, Jane, who doesn’t have a maternal bone in her body, must pose as Emily’s mother and serve as her protector. At the same time, she needs to help Emily slowly remember the devastating event without traumatizing her further. And while she does so, the killer is closing in . . . .Protector marks the debut of Jane Perry, an immensely flawed, utterly sympathetic character. She will shock you, confound you, astonish you, and ultimately grip your soul.

How the Gospels Became History: Jesus and Mediterranean Myths (Synkrisis) M. David Litwa; Yale University Press, Yale University Press, New Haven, 2019
A compelling comparison of the gospels and Greco-Roman mythology which shows that the gospels were not perceived as myths, but as historical records Did the early Christians believe their myths? Like most ancient—and modern—people, early Christians made efforts to present their myths in the most believable ways. In this eye-opening work, M. David Litwa explores how and why what later became the four canonical gospels take on a historical cast that remains vitally important for many Christians today. Offering an in-depth comparison with other Greco-Roman stories that have been shaped to seem like history, Litwa shows how the evangelists responded to the pressures of Greco-Roman literary culture by using well-known historiographical tropes such as the mention of famous rulers and kings, geographical notices, the introduction of eyewitnesses, vivid presentation, alternative reports, and so on. In this way, the evangelists deliberately shaped myths about Jesus into historical discourse to maximize their believability for ancient audiences.

Captain Gill’s Walking Stick : The True Story of the Sinai Murders Kelly, Saul; Bloomsbury UK, Bloomsbury UK, London, 2019
It shines light on a fascinating, forgotten crime, as well as on early intelligence operations in the Middle East."--Bloomsbury Publishing

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/finished/Mourning Ruby - Helen Dunmore.epub
Mourning Ruby Helen Dunmore Berkley Publishing Group, 2003
From Publishers Weekly When Rebecca, the narrator of most of Dunmore's fine, almost unbearably sad eighth novel (after 2003's Ice Cream), shares a flat with Joe in London, she begins to enjoy the pleasures of friendship and family for the first time in her life: she was abandoned as a baby and adopted by a couple remarkably unsuitable for parenting. Joe, a historian interested in Stalin, introduces her to simple pleasures and shows her that loneliness need not be permanent. And it's through Joe that she meets Adam, a neonatologist who becomes her husband and the father of their daughter, Ruby ("For the first time, I was tied to someone by blood"). Given the book's title, Ruby's death is no surprise (though it's still heartbreaking without being melodramatic), and Dunmore plumbs the consequences of loss: How does one mourn, and then accept, the unacceptable? Numbed by Ruby's death, Rebecca drifts away from Adam, finding diversion in a job as an assistant to a hotelier, Mr. Damiano; Adam buries himself in his work with premature babies. Ambitiously, Dunmore complements this tragic narrative with two other stories, one autobiographical, told by Mr. Damiano, about growing up in a circus where his parents were trapeze artists, and one told by Joe, a work of fiction set during WWI about a man and a woman who could be his and Rebecca's ancestors. Rebecca's own story isn't told linearly, so these narrative asides aren't as distracting as they sound. And they are critical to the author's main theme: that narrative is a key to understanding and to acceptance. This is that rare novel, an intensely emotional, fiercely intelligent story, fiction with the power to offer redemption. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From Booklist Starred Review When Rebecca's and Adam's daughter, Ruby, dies in a playground accident, their lives are forever changed. In Dunmore's elegant hands, such a simple and sorrowful synopsis is transformed into an elegiac tale of unbearable suffering and unexpected redemption as lyrical and lush as life itself. As an abandoned infant and unwanted adoptee, Rebecca spun romantic stories of her past to compensate for the meager facts of her existence. Only in her role as Ruby's mother did she find her true identity, and when that vanishes, it falls to her old friend, Joe, a writer, and her enigmatic boss, Mr. Damiano, to present her with new stories that will allow her to once more create a life without Ruby. Dunmore portrays Rebecca's palpable grief with a poignant and powerful empathy, an anguish so strong that it envelops the reader in its enormity. Yet Rebecca's story is one to be savored, one whose beauty is haunting and whose message is hopeful. Told with abundant grace and exquisite sensitivity, this is a book to fall in love with, to hold in your heart like a cherished memory. Carol Haggas Copyright © American Library Association. The Adolescence of Zhenya Luvers Pasternak, Boris Philosophical Library/Open Road, 1961

Untold Stories of Polish Heroes From World War II Aleksandra Ziółkowska-Boehm; James S Pula Hamilton Books, Lanham, Maryland, USA, 2018
A full understanding of the historical process must include studies of the social and economic conditions of societies as well as biographies of the people on which a clear understanding of history is based—but not just the “great” people. Biographies of “average” individuals, who exist in a society, have their own experiences and are acted upon by their surrounding environments, are essential to a clear and complete understanding of the past and its influence on the present. In this respect, Aleksandra Ziolkowska-Boehm has made a major contribution to furthering the understanding of World War II, and especially the part played by Poland and Poles, with her compilation of individual biographies of people who participated in many of its formative events. Ziolkowska-Boehm’s protagonists include a variety of people and experiences that enhance the usefulness of the volume. There are: Tadeusz Brzeziński, a member of the Polish diplomatic corps; the hero who escaped the Lwów ghetto to fight in the Warsaw Uprising and later founded a theatre group in Montréal; a pilot who escaped from the Soviet Union to fly fighters over Great Britain; a photographer of the Warsaw Uprising; a nurse during the Warsaw Uprising; a personal memories of the post-war era move to the United States; a person who was forcefully deported with her family to the Soviet Urals, later escaping to the Middle East and eventually Mexico; the boy who, though only eight when the war began, but survived Pawiak Prison, moved to Brazil, and became an internationally-known poet and artist. ** Review Poland was the first country to stand against Hitler’s Nazi armies and the Red Armies of Stalin’s Soviet Union when, in Sept. 1939, at the beginning of World War 11, they both marched into Poland with the deliberate intention of dividing the country and destroying it’s people. The eminent literary historian and master story-teller, Aleksandra Ziolkowska-Boehm’s important and beautifully crafted book records the history of this horrific time through eight powerful narratives relating the experiences of diverse people, many of whom survived the atrocities of ethnic cleansing, the valiant Warsaw Uprising in 1944 and struggles beyond. The author brings her intriguing and fascinating protagonists alive with a brilliant mix of intimate physical experiences and their profound thoughts of how the trauma of war affected their own philosophy of life and the meaning of it all. With these unforgettable true life-stories of special, yet ordinary people, who symbolize the sum of all persons, Aleksandra has created an essential link in the chain of human chronicles that document the heroic epic history of Poland and the Polish people. The author offers an invaluable bonus in the “Annex” where she relates how she personally perceives “creative nonfiction.” (Audrey Ronning Topping, American Publisher's 2013 Prose Award winner author) The Second World War is a historical event so immense that it all too easily can become an abstraction. In Untold Stories of Polish Heroes from World War II, Aleksandra Ziółkowska-Boehm humanizes our recollection of the conflict by demonstrating its effects on the lives of surviving sons and daughters of Poland, the land most devastated by the war. Representing a vivid cross section of Polish society, and a telling variety of wartime experiences, these individual portraits of diplomats, warriors, and ordinary people caught up in extraordinary times reveal much about the fate of Poland in its time of greatest trial. (Neal Pease, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee) In Untold Stories of Polish Heroes from World War II, Aleksandra Ziolkowska-Boehm continues to inform, delight, and amaze readers who have (or soon will) know her as one of our most able chroniclers of Polish resistance to Nazi and Soviet invaders during World War II. These are the memories of surviving resistance fighters, mainly after the war. What unites them is their experiences as “brethren in those dark days,” a time of consummate cruelty by the Nazis, when the penalty of resistance under the Nazis was horrific: if a Polish resistance fighter killed German soldier, a hundred Poles were randomly executed. Saving Jews carried the death penalty. Polish citizens who sheltered Jews were executed, along with their families. Many of the survivors were scattered around the world after the war, from the United States to India, and elsewhere, working to retain a sense of Polish culture and history. Her "Annex," on literary journalism, will evoke empathy and understanding from all who write. For the survivors, and generations to come, this book is invaluable testimony. (Bruce E. Johansen, University of Nebraska at Omaha) Some events in history are over remembered, others are under remembered. Aleksandra Ziolkowska-Boehm tell us the stories of survivors and heroes who have not made it to the front pages of newspapers, but who are every little bit as significant as those who have. She does so in an intimate way, as if she were telling secrets to a friend. You will not remain indifferent to the content of this book. (Ewa Thompson, Rice University) About the Author Aleksandra Ziolkowska-Boehm, PhD, Fulbright scholar, is the author of Kaia, Heroine of the 1944 Warsaw Rising; Open Wounds A Native American Heritage; Ingrid Bergman and Her American relatives; Love for Family, Friends and Books; On the Road with Suzy From Cat to Companion, as well as many other books. Humour Terry Eagleton; Yale University Press, Yale University Press, New Haven, 2019
A compelling guide to the fundamental place of humour and comedy within Western culture --by one of its greatest exponents Written by an acknowledged master of comedy, this study reflects on the nature of humour and the functions it serves. Why do we laugh? What are we to make of the sheer variety of laughter, from braying and cackling to sniggering and chortling? Is humour subversive, or can it defuse dissent? Can we define wit? Packed with illuminating ideas and a good many excellent jokes, the book critically examines various well-known theories of humour, including the idea that it springs from incongruity and the view that it reflects a mildly sadistic form of superiority to others. Drawing on a wide range of literary and philosophical sources, Terry Eagleton moves from Aristotle and Aquinas to Hobbes, Freud, and Bakhtin, looking in particular at the psychoanalytical mechanisms underlying humour and its social and political evolution over the centuries. Ecozoic Spirituality: The Symphony of God, Humanity, and the Universe (Asian Thought and Culture) Choi, Kwang Sun; Peter Lang Inc., International Academic Publishers, Peter Lang Group, New York, 2015
This book guides the reader to the emerging Ecozoic Era when humans will be present upon the Earth in a mutually enhancing manner. Indeed, this book calls for an Ecozoic spirituality that is timely and much needed. It also illustrates an important direction for theology and spirituality and for deep ecumenism that is yet to be fully realized and opens more doors for such dialogue. By giving special attention to the integral relationship among God, the cosmos, and humanity, the works of Thomas Berry (1914–2009, USA) and Zhou Dunyi (1017–1073, China) provide insights that speak to the current ecological crisis, a cosmological context for developing an Ecozoic spirituality, while helping to advance clear values and ethical parameters that lead to a more authentic human presence on Earth. Ludwig von Mises on Money and Inflation (Large Print Edition): A Synthesis of Several Lectures Greaves, Bettina Bien Ludwig von Mises Institute, Auburn, Alabama, 2010
In the 1960s, Ludwig von Mises lectured often on money and inflation. Bettina Bien Greaves was there taking shorthand. She has been working to transcribe them for a very long time. At last the results are here and they are fantastic. To have this work is like having Mises as your private tutor, telling you about money and inflation in a casual setting and in plain language. He is the prophet of the 20th century on these topics, and here he presents his entire apparatus. True, this book is not technically by Mises. It is not something he signed off on. But they are his lectures, and they provide a glimpse into the workings of an incredible mind on a topic that is crucial to our future. Ms. Greaves explains: Upon the establishment of the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE) in 1946, Ludwig von Mises became a part-time adviser, and he served in that capacity until his death in 1973. Whenever FEE held a seminar in Irvington, if he was in town he would drive out from New York City, where he lived with his wife, Margit, to speak to the participants. His topic was quite often inflation. I attended all those lectures, took them down in shorthand and later transcribed them. The thought occurred to me that eight to ten of his lectures on inflation, delivered in the 1960s, might be integrated, with the duplications deleted, and turned into a single piece. Hence this paper. Mises did not like to have his oral remarks quoted or published because, obviously, they did not represent the care and precision he devoted to his writings. However, it does not seem to me that these lectures, as I have edited them, misrepresent his ideas in any way. Moreover, they reveal his unpretentious manner and the informal simple style he used when talking to students. He often rephrased an idea in several different ways, repeating it for emphasis. He was frequently accused of being "simplistic," of making economic subjects appear too clear and simple, but it was this very

Architecture and Modernity : A Critique Hilde Heynen The MIT Press, MIT Press, Cambridge, Mass, 1999
Bridges the gap between the history and theory of twentieth-century architecture and cultural theories of modernity. In this exploration of the relationship between modernity, dwelling, and architecture, Hilde Heynen attempts to bridge the gap between the discourse of the modern movement and cultural theories of modernity. On one hand, she discusses architecture from the perspective of critical theory, and on the other, she modifies positions within critical theory by linking them with architecture. She assesses architecture as a cultural field that structures daily life and that embodies major contradictions inherent in modernity, arguing that architecture nonetheless has a certain capacity to adopt a critical stance vis-à-vis modernity.Besides presenting a theoretical discussion of the relation between architecture, modernity, and dwelling, the book provides architectural students with an introduction to the discourse of critical theory. The subchapters on Walter Benjamin, Ernst Bloch, Theodor Adorno, and the Venice School (Tafuri, Dal Co, Cacciari) can be studied independently for this purpose.

The Global Histories of Books: Methods and Practices (New Directions in Book History) Elleke Boehmer; Rouven Kunstmann; Priyasha Mukhopadhyay; Asha Rogers Springer International Publishing Imprint : Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, Cham, Switzerland, 2017
This book is an edited volume of essays that showcases how books played a crucial role in making and materialising histories of travel, scientific exchanges, translation, and global markets from the late-eighteenth century to the present. While existing book historical practice is overly dependent on models of the local and the national, we suggest that approaching the book as a cross-region, travelling – and therefore global- object offers new approaches and methodologies for a study in global perspective. By thus studying the book in its transnational and inter-imperial, textual, inter-textual and material dimensions, this collection will highlight its key role in making possible a global imagination, shaped by networks of print material, readers, publishers and translators.
