Economy of words : communicative imperatives in central banks Holmes, Douglas R. The University of Chicago Press, Illustrated, 2013
Markets are artifacts of language so Douglas R. Holmes argues in this deeply researched look at central banks and the people who run them. Working at the intersection of anthropology, linguistics, and economics, he shows how central bankers have been engaging in communicative experiments that predate the financial crisis and continue to be refined amid its unfolding turmoil experiments that do not merely describe the economy, but actually create its distinctive features. Holmes examines the New York District Branch of the Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank, Deutsche Bundesbank, and the Bank of England, among others, and shows how officials there have created a new monetary regime that relies on collaboration with the public to achieve the ends of monetary policy. Central bankers, Holmes argues, have shifted the conceptual anchor of monetary affairs away from standards such as gold or fixed exchange rates and toward an evolving relationship with the public, one rooted in sentiments and expectations. Going behind closed doors to reveal the intellectual world of central banks, Economy of Words offers provocative new insights into the way our economic circumstances are conceptualized and ultimately managed -- Provided by Publisher

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/The Art of Military Deception - Mark Lloyd.epub
Pen & Sword Select [00] The Art of Military Deception Mark Lloyd Pen & Sword Select, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., Barnsley, 2003
This in-depth analysis of military deception examines tactics employed across centuries and continents, from ancient times to WWII. The art of military deception is as old as warfare itself. It has been a vital part of virtually every successful campaign ever recorded, and yet has been largely overlooked in the annals of military history. In The Art of Military Deception, Mark Lloyd corrects this oversight with a wide-ranging analysis of strategies and tactics through the ages. Lloyd treats this much-neglected aspect of warfare thematically rather than chronologically covering such topics as disinformation campaigns, lies on the home front, and psychological warfare. He draws on a wide range of examples to show the elaborate techniques which have been employed in the struggle to outwit the enemy. Particularly fascinating is his analysis of the fatal error of self-deception.

Brute Facts Edited by: Elly Vintiadis and Constantinos Mekios OUP Oxford, Oxford University Press USA, New York, NY, 2018
Brute facts are facts that don't have explanations. Such facts appear in our explanations, inform many people's views about the structure of the world, and are part of philosophical interpretations in metaphysics and the philosophy of science. Yet, despite the considerable literature on explanation, the question of bruteness has been left largely unexamined. The chapters in Brute Facts address this gap in academic thought by exploring the central considerations which surround this topic. How can we draw a distinction between facts that can reasonably be thought of as brute and facts for which further explanation is possible? Can we explain something and gain understanding by appealing to brute facts? Is naturalism inconsistent with the existence of (non-physical) brute facts? Can modal facts be brute facts? Are emergent facts brute? This volume brings together contributions by authors who offer different answers to these questions. In presenting a range of different viewpoints on these matters, Brute Facts engages with major debates in contemporary philosophy concerning modality, naturalism, consciousness, reduction and explanation. ** About the Author Elly Vintiadis teaches philosophy at the American College of Greece. Her current research interests are in the philosophy of mind, the metaphysics of mind and philosophy of psychiatry - mainly explanation, emergentism and the philosophical implications of mental disorders. In the past Vintiadis has taught at the Hellenic Naval Staff and Command College and at the City College of New York. Constantinos Mekios studied genetics at Columbia University prior to joining the philosophy department at Boston University, where he specialized in the philosophy of biology. Mekios is currently associate professor of philosophy at Stonehill College, where he has been teaching since 2006. His philosophical research remains informed primarily by biological problems and his present work centers on questions concerning explanation and methodology in Systems Biology.

Philosophy of Mind in the Late Middle Ages and Renaissance : The History of the Philosophy of Mind, Volume 3 Stephan Schmid Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), New York, 2018
Characterized by many historically significant events, such as the invention of the printing press, the discovery of the New World, and the Protestant Reformation, the years between 1300 and 1600 are a remarkably rich source of ideas about the mind. They witnessed a resurgence of Aristotelianism and Platonism and the development of humanism. However, philosophical understanding of the complex arguments and debates during this period remain difficult to grasp. Philosophy of Mind in the Late Middle Ages and Renaissance provides an outstanding survey of philosophy of mind in this fascinating and still controversial period and examines the thought of figures such as Aquinas, Suárez, and Ficino. Following an introduction by Stephan Schmid, thirteen specially commissioned chapters by an international team of contributors discuss key topics, thinkers, and debates, including: mind and method, the mind and its illnesses, the powers of the soul, Averroism, intentionality and representationalism, theories of (self-)consciousness, will and its freedom, external and internal senses, Renaissance theories of the passions, the mind–body problem and the rise of dualism, and the ‘cognitive turn’. Essential reading for students and researchers in philosophy of mind, medieval philosophy, and the history of philosophy, Philosophy of Mind in the Late Middle Ages and Renaissance is also a valuable resource for those in related disciplines such as religion, literature, and Renaissance studies. ** Review Praise for The History of the Philosophy of Mind : 'A monumental resource for anyone interested in the human mind and the history of philosophical attempts to understand it. Students who consult these volumes will appreciate the multiple branching paths that connect past philosophical writings to those of the present. The juxtapositions of topics and historical figures in each volume can help researchers in contemporary philosophy of mind identify precedents for contemporary positions.' - Susanna Siegel , Harvard University, USA 'This six-volume history of the philosophy of mind is a compendious tour-de-force, tracing the sources of modern problems to a vibrant philosophical conversation ranging from antiquity to the present day. This is a special and uniquely wide-ranging resource for anyone, from the novice to the expert, with an interest in the nature of mind and its faculties, as well as its relation to the body and the physical world.' - Samuel Rickless , University of California San Diego, USA 'These six volumes constitute an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the philosophy of mind and the history of philosophy – as well as metaphysics, psychology, and cognitive science – and I recommend them, with great enthusiasm, to all. Together they illuminate areas of inquiry that may be unfamiliar to contemporary philosophers of mind, and reveal unappreciated subtleties and continuities in theories of mind throughout the history of philosophy.' - Janet Levin , University of Southern California, USA 'A comprehensive and illuminating guide to the history of Western theories of the mind, ranging over every aspect of the enduring philosophical debate, from consciousness to perception, and from will to the passions. These volumes collectively offer a state-of-the-art presentation of the field.' - Robert Pasnau , University of Colorado Boulder, USA About the Author Stephan Schmid is Professor for the History of Philosophy at the University of Hamburg, Germany. He mainly works on Late Medieval and Early Modern philosophy, focusing on debates in metaphysics, epistemology, and philosophy of mind, with a special interest in how these discussions are carried forward in present-day analytic philosophy. He has published on Aquinas, Scotus, Ockham, Suárez, Descartes, Spinoza, Malebranche, and Hume and is the author of Finalursachen in der frühen Neuzeit (2011). The Ethics of Silence : An Interdisciplinary Case Analysis Approach Nancy Billias and Sivaram Vemuri Palgrave, an imprint of Macmillan Publishers Limited, Springer Nature, Cham, 2017
This volume is an interdisciplinary exploration of the modalities, meanings, and practices of silence in contemporary social discourse. How is silence treated in different cultures? In a globalized world, how is silence managed between and across cultures? Co-authored by a philosopher and an economist, the text draws on interviews with scholars and practitioners in fields as diverse as marine biology and African American history. International case studies are presented in operational contexts from the Black Lives Matter movement to the creation of art installations to the struggles of transgender people in Southeast Asia. The authors examine the relationship between ethics and silence, and suggest strategies to transform social praxis through greater attention to silence. **

Russell Kirk (Major Conservative and Libertarian Thinkers) Pafford, John M.,Meadowcroft, John. Continuum International Publishing Group, Limited, 2010
Russell Kirk is widely regarded as the individual most responsible for the revival of conservative thought in the latter half of the twentieth century. Kirk's conservative philosophy was well-established with his magnum opus, The Conservative Mind, published in 1953, and remained constant until his death in 1994. His Christianity, though, grew from something seen as the foundation of Western Civilization to being also a personal faith. He became a Roman Catholic, drawn by its universality, its traditionalism, and his love for the woman he married. Although he believed in certain Catholic distinctives, such as purgatory, he generally seemed to be more of a generic Christian than a dogmatic follower of Rome.

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/Metapsychology for Contemporary - Richard Sembera.epub
Metapsychology for Contemporary Psychoanalysis : Mind, World, and Self Sembera, Richard; Taylor and Francis, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), New York City, 2017
Metapsychology for Contemporary Psychoanalysis is a complete revision of the theoretical underpinnings of psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy. It seeks to replace the traditional drive–defence model of Freudian tradition with an information processing model of the mind. This book argues that the central human need is for self-knowledge , and that drives are best understood as means towards this end. Richard Sembera begins with a close reading of Freud’s own metapsychological writings, isolating the many unresolved difficulties and inconsistencies which continue to burden psychoanalytical theory today. By returning to the actual observable clinical phenomena in the analytic situation, it is shown that an alternative interpretation is possible that eliminates the theoretical difficulties in question. In the analytic situation, Sembera argues that clinicians do not in fact see individuals struggling against the expression of biological drives, rather they observe individuals struggling to clarify their experience of themselves in the presence of the analyst and put this experience into words. When this process is formalized and expressed in theoretical terms, it is found to consist of three distinct aspects:? objectification , imagination , and symbolization . This process as a whole—ascent towards the other, relationship with the other, disclosure of self in the light of the other—is termed the dialectical structure of the self. It is conceptualized as the main accomplishment of the core mental process, the process of contextualization . This work is distinguished from other attempts at theoretical revision by its fundamental commitment to coherence and clarity as well as its determination to challenge accepted psychoanalytic dogma. It argues for the complete irrelevance of biology and neuroscience to the psychoanalytic enterprise and rejects the theory of drives in its entirety. Instead it affirms the centrality of the traumatic response to mental functioning, emphasises the social matrix in which drives are embedded, re-examines the concepts of free will, accountability, and responsibility, and concludes with an attempt to understand waking life as a creative product analogous to the lucid dream .? Drawing on major psychoanalytic thinkers including Bollas and Benjamin, and current philosophy of mind, this book provides readers with a clear, updated model of metapsychology. Metapsychology for Contemporary Psychoanalysis will appeal to psychoanalysts and psychotherapists, as well as philosophy scholars and anyone with an interest in the philosophy of psychoanalysis. ** Review *"Richard Sembera tackles the rarely discussed question of how psychoanalysis can be explained from a theoretical vantage point. In this work, he replaces Freud’s meta-psychology based upon energic concepts and drive theory, with a model of explanation arising from information processing theory and developmental processes. Using cogent reasoning and clear, understandable language, Sembera offers psychoanalysts a new theoretical approach to their work, which will hopefully lead to questions about how to conceptualize psychoanalysis in the future. This is an excellent book for psychoanalysts, be they scholars or clinicians."- *Steven Rosenbloom , Training and Supervising Analyst, Canadian Institute of Psychoanalysis and Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology & Psychiatry, McGill University About the Author Richard Sembera is a Registered Psychotherapist and a Canadian Certified Counsellor. He is also a Training Candidate of the Canadian Institute of Psychoanalysis (Québec English). He presently works in the area of psychosocial emergency preparedness and response.

Following Nietzsche's call for a philosopher-physician and his own use of the bodily language of health and illness as tools to diagnose the ailments of the body politic, this book offers a reconstruction of the concept of political physiology in Nietzsche's thought, bridging gaps between Anglo-American, German and French schools of interpretation.

Polysituatedness: A poetics of displacement (Angelaki Humanities) John Kinsella Manchester University Press, Manchester University Press, Manchester, 2017
This book is concerned with the complexities of defining 'place', of observing and 'seeing' place, and how we might write a poetics of place. From Kathy Acker to indigenous Australian poet Jack Davis, the book touches on other writers and theorists, but in essence is a hands-on 'praxis' book of poetic practice. The work extends John Kinsella's theory of 'international regionalism' and posits new ways of reading the relationship between place and individual, between individual and the natural environment, and how place occupies the person as much as the person occupies place. It provides alternative readings of writers through place and space, especially Australian writers, but also non-Australian. Further, close consideration is given to being of 'famine-migrant' Irish heritage and the complexities of 'returning'. A close-up examination of 'belonging' and exclusion is made on a day-to-day basis. The book offers an approach to creating poems and literary texts constituted by experiencing multiple places, developing a model of polyvalent belonging known as 'polysituatedness'. It works as a companion volume to Kinsella's earlier Manchester University Press critical work, Disclosed Poetics: Beyond Landscape to Lyricism . ** Review "Every so often a book comes along which makes you sit up and take notice, not just because the story is so compelling but also because it offers an entirely fresh approach based either on virgin evidence or on a new way of addressing the subject. Angela McCarthy and Tom Devine's account of the life and career of James Taylor is just such an enterprise and very good it is too. EL It is to the authors' credit that they have rescued him from unnecessary oblivion in this hugely enjoyable and expressive account of a life well lived." - Trevor Royle, The Herald "This work [...] is extraordinarily timely, and capable of stirring fruitful, productive reflection and action on how our capacity and capability with language can affect and interact with our place in the natural and social environment, the ecosphere." Female Philanthropy in the Interwar World : Between Self and Other Eve Colpus Bloomsbury Academic; Bloomsbury, Bloomsbury UK, London, 2018
Female philanthropy was at the heart of transformative thinking about society and the role of individuals in the interwar period. In Britain, in the aftermath of the First World War, professionalization; the authority of the social sciences; mass democracy; internationalism; and new media sounded the future and, for many, the death knell of elite practices of benevolence. Eve Colpus tells a new story about a world in which female philanthropists reshaped personal models of charity for modern projects of social connectedness, and new forms of cultural and political encounter. Centering the stories of four remarkable British-born women - Evangeline Booth; Lettice Fisher; Emily Kinnaird; and Muriel Paget - Colpus recaptures the breadth of the social, cultural and political influence of women's philanthropy upon practices of social activism. Female Philanthropy in the Interwar World is not only a new history of women's civic agency in the interwar period, but also a study of how female philanthropists explored approaches to identification and cultural difference that emphasized friendship in relation to interwar modernity. Richly detailed, the book's perspective on women's social interventionism offers a new reading of the centrality of personal relationships to philanthropy that can inform alternative models of giving today. ** Review A fascinating, path-breaking study of twentieth-century philanthropy as witnessed through the intellectual, physical and moral journeys of four distinguished but diverse British women. Colpus moves beyond conventional structural understandings of the charitable relationship and illustrates the importance of individual agency within interwar female philanthropic ideas and practices. * Sue Morgan, Emeritus Professor of Gender and Women's History, University of Chichester, UK * This portrait of four remarkable women philanthropists delivers an exciting reinterpretation of British voluntarism in the 1920s and 1930s-a subject that has long called for more scholarly attention. Colpus shows that far from being a narrow and fading Victorian remnant, interwar philanthropy was often modern, dynamic, and ambitious in scope. * Ellen Ross, Professor Emerita of History and Women's Studies, Ramapo College, New Jersey, USA. * About the Author Eve Colpus is Lecturer in British and European History post-1850 at the University of Southampton, UK.

The Genome Generation Elizabeth Finkel Melbourne University Press Digital, Melbourne University Publishing, Melbourne, 2012
The year 2001 marked more than just the beginning of Stanley Kubrick's Space Odyssey , it marked the beginning of the genome era. That was the year scientists first read the 3 billion letters of DNA that make up the human genome. This was followed by a veritable Noah's Ark of genomessponges and worms, dogs and cows, rice and wheat, chimps and elephants180 creatures aboard so far. So what have we learned from all this? How has it changed the way we practise medicine, grow crops and breed livestock? What have we learned about evolution? These are the questions science writer and molecular biologist Elizabeth Finkel asked herself four years ago. To find the answers she travelled the science frontier from Botswana to Boston, from Warracknabeal to Mexico and tracked down scientists working in the field. Their stories, told here, paint the picture of what it means to be part of the genome generation. ' The Genome Generation is absolutely riveting. These tales from the frontier are a 'must read' for everyone who wishes to understand our pastthe logic of evolutionor take a peep into our exciting future at the creation of 'super plants' through 'digital agriculture'.'R.A. Northumbria: The Lost Kingdom : The Lost Kingdom Paul Gething; Edoardo Albert The History Press Ltd, Independent Publishers Group, [N.p.], 2012
Northumbria was one of the great kingdoms of Britain in the Dark Ages, enduring longer than the Roman Empire. Yet is has been all but fogotten. This book puts Northumbria back in its rightful place, at the heart of British history. From the impregnable fastness of Bamburgh Castle, the kings of Northumbria rules a vast area, and held sway as High Kings of Britain. From the tidal island of Lindisfarne, extraordinary saints and learned scholars brough Christianity and civilisation to the rest of the country. Now, thanks to the ongoing work of a dedicated team of archaeologists this story is slowly being brought to light. The excavations at Bamburgh Castle have revealed a society of unsuspected sophistication and elegance, capable of creating swords and jewellery unparalleled before or since, and the works of art and devotion that still fill the beholder with wonder.

Foucault : a very short introduction Foucault, Michel; Gutting, Gary Oxford University Press, UK, 1, 2005 jun 16
Foucault is one of those rare philosophers who has become a cult figure. Born in 1926 in France, over the course of his life he dabbled in drugs, politics, and the Paris SM scene, all whilst striving to understand the deep concepts of identity, knowledge, and power. From aesthetics to the penal system; from madness and civilisation to avant-garde literature, Foucault was happy to reject old models of thinking and replace them with versions that are still widely debated today. A major influence on Queer Theory and gender studies (he was openly gay and died of an AIDS-related illness in 1984), he also wrote on architecture, history, law, medicine, literature, politics and of course philosophy, and even managed a best-seller in France on a book dedicated to the history of systems of thought. Because of the complexity of his arguments, people trying to come to terms with his work have desperately sought introductory material that makes his theories clear and accessible for the beginner. Ideally suited for the Very Short Introductions series, Gary Gutting presents a comprehensive but non-systematic treatment of some highlights of Foucault's life and thought. Beginning with a brief biography to set the social and political stage, he then tackles Foucault's thoughts on literature, in particular the avant-garde scene; his philosophical and historical work; his treatment of knowledge and power in modern society; and his thoughts on sexuality. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Autonomy, Refusal, and the Black Bloc: Positioning Class Analysis in Critical and Radical Theory (Radical Subjects in International Politics) Robert F. Carley Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Incorporated, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, London, 2019
Autonomy, Refusal, and The Black Bloc reinterprets the positioning of critical and radical theory by focusing squarely on the role of class analysis. It also argues that the survivance of The Frankfurt School style of critique is wholly dependent upon the traditions of radical theory that find their same departure point from out of “the great refusals” of the 1960s and 1970s. By linking together the traditions of critical and radical theory through the work of Marcuse and Negri and by demonstrating their conjunctural and historiographical connections, Carley argues that the inventive strategic and organizational contexts that give rise to the black bloc tactic constitute a new political expression of class and, more forcefully, constitute the meaning of class politics for the late 20th and 21st century. Review These are fighting words. Part genealogy of critical theory's strongest sinews, part corrective to the distortions of posers, Carley's mastery of the literature is bested only by his contempt for those who fake it. Every theory must find its limit situation, and Carley makes plain that, at its threshold, "autonomy" demands the repolarization of our one-dimensional world. Read at your own risk! (AK Thompson, Author of Premonitions: Selected Essays on the Culture of Revolt and Black Bloc, White Riot: Antiglobalization and the Genealogy of Dissent) Contra Antonio Negri’s criticism of the black bloc movement as “solitary” and “individual,” Carley argues powerfully and lucidly that the black bloc movement involves not merely isolated incidents of revolt, but an “affirmative and active” practice of progressive and constructive reconfigurations of social relations. This is an important contribution for anyone attempting to theorize, and support, contemporary social movements, and particularly the urgent issue of their organization or lack thereof. (Pierre Lamarche, Professor of Philosophy, Utah Valley University) About the Author Robert F. Carley is Assistant Professor of International Studies at Texas A&M University, College Station.

Placing Empire : Travel and the Social Imagination in Imperial Japan Kate McDonald; University of California, Santa Barbara University of California Press, Paperback, 2017
A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press’s Open Access publishing program. Visit [www.luminosoa.org](http://www.luminosoa.org) to learn more.__Placing Empire__examines the spatial politics of Japanese imperialism through a study of Japanese travel and tourism to Korea, Manchuria, and Taiwan between the late nineteenth century and the early 1950s. In a departure from standard histories of Japan, this book shows how debates over the role of colonized lands reshaped the social and spatial imaginary of the modern Japanese nation and how, in turn, this sociospatial imaginary affected the ways in which colonial difference was conceptualized and enacted. The book thus illuminates how ideas of place became central to the production of new forms of colonial hierarchy as empires around the globe transitioned from an era of territorial acquisition to one of territorial maintenance.

Philosophy of Mind in the Late Middle Ages and Renaissance : The History of the Philosophy of Mind, Volume 3 Stephan Schmid Taylor & Francis (CAM), Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), New York, 2018

The provincial letters ; Pensées ; Scientific treatises Blaise Pascal, A. Krailsheimer, Philippe Sellier, William Finlayson Trotter, T. S. Eliot, Blaise Perier, Margival Henri, H. F. Stewart Penguin Books, Limited, 2013
Blaise Pascal, the precociously brilliant contemporary of Descartes, was a gifted mathematician and physicist, but it is his unfinished apologia for the Christian religion upon which his reputation now rests. The Penseés is a collection of philosohical fragments, notes and essays in which Pascal explores the contradictions of human nature in pscyhological, social, metaphysical and - above all - theological terms. Mankind emerges from Pascal's analysis as a wretched and desolate creature within an impersonal universe, but who can be transformed through faith in God's grace.

Towards Tate Modern 1988-2000: Public Policy Private Vision - Art Building and City CAROLINE DONNELLAN Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2018
Towards Tate Modern provides a new interdisciplinary account of Tate’s shifting position as a national arts institution. The book examines how earlier government directives impacted on Tate, which saw the organisation refocusing its aims and resulted in it pioneering new models for working across the public and private sectors. The decade prior to the opening of Tate Modern witnessed a changing political, economic, cultural and social landscape. As London was rebuilding its own vision, Tate re-configured its role as a public museum and gallery by engaging with the market. Tate re-imagined what a public museum and gallery can do, what it can look like and where it can be and, in doing so, responded to a new kind of audience with a larger appetite than before. Re-cast as a cultural and social forum, Tate Modern turned itself into a popular public event. This research considers how Tate Modern generated a set of new debates and what this might mean for the future role of the public museum and gallery. * Towards Tate Modern will be of particular interest to academics and students, art practitioners and policy makers working in the fields of museum studies, policy studies, cultural studies, urban studies, and political and economic history, as well as those involved in archival research. It will also engage those wishing to widen their understanding of how an institution such as Tate Modern was created. ** About the Author Caroline Donnellan is a Lecturer in History of Art & Architectural History at Boston University Study Abroad London, UK

Vergil's Green Thoughts : Plants, Humans, and the Divine Rebecca Armstrong; OUP Oxford, Oxford University Press USA, Oxford, 2019
The Eclogues , Georgics , and Aeneid abound with plants, yet much Vergilian criticism underestimates their significance beyond attractive background detail or the occasional symbolic set-piece. This volume joins the growing field of nature-centred studies of literature, looking head-on at Vergil's plants and trees to reveal how fundamental they are to an understanding of the poet's outlook on religion, culture, and mankind's place within the world. Divided into two parts, the first explores the religious and more diffusely numinous aspects of Vergil's plants, from awe-inspiring sacred groves to divinely promoted fields of corn, and shows how both cultivated and uncultivated plants fit within and help to shape the complex landscape of Vergilian (and, more broadly, Roman) religious thought. In the second half of the book, the focus shifts towards human interactions with plants from the perspectives of both cultivation and relaxation, exploring the love-hate relationship with vegetation which sometimes supports and sometimes contests the human self-image as the world's dominant species. Combining a series of close readings of a wide range of passages with the identification of broader patterns of association, Vergil's Green Thoughts appositely reveals and celebrates the complexity and variety of Vergilian flora.
