Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist and Other Essays Kingsnorth, Paul Graywolf Press, First Edition, PS, 2017
A provocative and urgent essay collection that asks how we can live with hope in “an age of ecocide” Paul Kingsnorth was once an activist—an ardent environmentalist. He fought against rampant development and the depredations of a corporate world that seemed hell-bent on ignoring a looming climate crisis in its relentless pursuit of profit. But as the environmental movement began to focus on “sustainability” rather than the defense of wild places for their own sake and as global conditions worsened, he grew disenchanted with the movement that he once embraced. He gave up what he saw as the false hope that residents of the First World would ever make the kind of sacrifices that might avert the severe consequences of climate change. Full of grief and fury as well as passionate, lyrical evocations of nature and the wild, Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist gathers the wave-making essays that have charted the change in Kingsnorth’s thinking. In them he articulates a new vision that he calls “dark ecology,” which stands firmly in opposition to the belief that technology can save us, and he argues for a renewed balance between the human and nonhuman worlds. This iconoclastic, fearless, and ultimately hopeful book, which includes the much-discussed “Uncivilization” manifesto, asks hard questions about how we’ve lived and how we should live. ** Review “This book is refreshing in both a literary respect and an environmental one. What Kingsnorth argues in these essays is so radical that, if put into practice, it could effect meaningful preservation. . . . Kingsnorth’s is a much-needed perspective in the environmental movement, recovering or otherwise.” ― Star Tribune (Minneapolis) “Kingsnorth writes with undeniable love: for the planet, for locations and histories, and for people. . . . The overall effect is necessarily grim, but often remarkably uplifting as well. In a world on the brink of collapse, Kingsnorth offers humor, compassion, humility and wisdom.” ―Shelf Awareness “A brilliant and sobering collection recommended for anyone, liberal or conservative, concerned about the runaway train of climate change.” ―Booklist “Kingsnorth is a talented, engaging writer. . . . Every essay provides food for thought and given a chance, can rearrange the way you view things. . . . It could even change the way you decide to live.” ―The Ecologist (UK) About the Author Paul Kingsnorth is the author of Beast and The Wake , which was long-listed for the Man Booker Prize. He is cofounder of the Dark Mountain Project, a global network of writers, artists, and thinkers in search of new stories for a world on the brink.

The Triumph of the Dark: European International History 1933-1939 (Oxford History of Modern Europe) Zara Steiner OUP Oxford, Oxford University Press USA, Oxford, 2010
In this magisterial narrative, Zara Steiner traces the twisted road to war that began with Hitler's assumption of power in Germany. Covering a wide geographical canvas, from America to the Far East, Steiner provides an indispensable reassessment of the most disputed events of these tumultuous years. Steiner underlines the far-reaching consequences of the Great Depression, which shifted the initiative in international affairs from those who upheld the status quo to those who were intent on destroying it. In Europe, the l930s were Hitler's years. He moved the major chess pieces on the board, forcing the others to respond. From the start, Steiner argues, he intended war, and he repeatedly gambled on Germany's future to acquire the necessary resources to fulfil his continental ambitions. Only war could have stopped him-an unwelcome message for most of Europe. Misperception, miscomprehension, and misjudgment on the part of the other Great Powers leaders opened the way for Hitler's repeated diplomatic successes. It is ideology that distinguished the Hitler era from previous struggles for the mastery of Europe. Ideological presumptions created false images and raised barriers to understanding that even good intelligence could not penetrate. Only when the leaders of Britain and France realized the scale of Hitler's ambition, and the challenge Germany posed to their Great Power status, did they finally declare war.

Besieged : An Encyclopedia of Great Sieges From Ancient Times to the Present Paul K. Davis ABC-CLIO; Bloomsbury, Bloomsbury USA, Santa Barbara, Calif, 2001
Besieged examines the most important sieges in historythe actions and motivations of attackers and defenders along with conditions inside and outside the city walls. From Joshua's assault on Jericho in the 15th century B.C. to the Russian attack on the Chechen capital of Grozny at the end of the 20th century, siege warfare has been a recurring theme in the human story. Again and again, engineers have built supposedly impregnable fortifications, only to see them overrun by an ingenious enemy. In Besieged , military historian Paul F. Davis analyzes the most crucial sieges in world history, such as the siege of Leningrad, which weakened the Nazi forces in World War II, and that of the Alamo, which culminated in independence for Texas. He also describes important sieges unfamiliar to most readers, such as that of Arcot, where a British victory halted the French takeover of southern India. In engaging, accessible language, Davis tracks the invention of new technologies, analyzes innovative tactics, and tells the human story of conditions both inside and outside the city walls.

American prisons : their past, present and future Musick, David; Gunsaulus-Musick, Kristine; Routledge; Routledge, an imprint of the Taylor & Francis Group, London ; New York, 2017
Imprisonment has become big business in the United States. Using a "history of ideas" approach, this book examines the cultural underpinnings of prisons in the United States and explores how shared ideas about imprisonment evolve into a complex, loosely connected nationwide system of prisons that keeps enough persons to populate a small nation behind bars, razor wire and electrified fences. Tracing both the history of the prison and the very idea of imprisonment in the United States, this book provides students with a critical overview of American prisons and considers their past, their present and directions for the future. Topics covered include: • a history of imprisonment in America from 1600 to the present day; • the twentieth-century prison building binge; • the relationship between U.S. prisons and the private sector; • a critical account of capital punishment; • less-visible prison minorities, including women, children and the elderly; and • sex, violence and disease in prison. This comprehensive book is essential reading for advanced courses on corrections and correctional management and offers a compelling and provocative analysis of the realities of American penal culture from past to present. It is perfect reading for students of criminal justice, corrections, penology and the sociology of punishment. **

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/Gargantua and Pantagruel - Francois Rabelais.epub
Gargantua and Pantagruel Francois Rabelais,Sir Thomas Urquhart,Peter Antony Motteux Digireads.com Publishing, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 1), [Lawrence, KS], 2009
Review Collective title of five comic novels by Francois Rabelais, published between 1532 and 1564. The novels present the comic and satiric story of the giant Gargantua and his son Pantagruel. The first two novels were published under the anagrammatic pseudonym Alcofribas (Alcofrybas) Nasier. The first book, commonly called Pantagruel (1532), deals with some of the fantastic incidents of the early years of Pantagruel. While at the University of Paris he receives a letter from his father that is still considered an essential exposition of French Renaissance ideals. In Paris Pantagruel also meets the cunning rogue Panurge, who becomes his companion throughout the series. In Gargantua (1534), old-fashioned scholastic pedagogy is ridiculed and contrasted with the humanist ideal of King Francis I, whose efforts to reform the French church Rabelais supported. Le Tiers Livre (1546; "The Third Book") is Rabelais's most profound and erudite work. In it Pantagruel has become a sage; Panurge is self-absorbed and bedeviled, wondering if he should marry. He consults various prognosticators, allowing Rabelais to hold forth on sex, love, and marriage, and to satirize fortune tellers, judges, and poets. Panurge persuades Pantagruel and friends to join him on a voyage to the Oracle of the Holy Bottle in Cathay for an answer. This they do in Le Quart Livre (1552; "The Fourth Book"), which reflects the era's interest in exploration; the Pantagruelians encounter a series of islands that present opportunities for the author to satirize the religious and political forces wreaking havoc on 16th-century Christendom. In a fifth book, Le Cinquieme Livre (1564; of doubtful authenticity), the band arrives at the temple of the Holy Bottle, where the oracle answers Panurge with a single word: "Drink!" -- __ Product Description An elaborate parody written in the 16th century, "Gargantua and Pantagruel" is a comic blend of energetic realism and carnival fantasy. The two main characters are giants, a father and his son, who have numerous adventures. Many different types of people are satirized during their chivalric exploits, from lawyers to theologians, generals to monarchs, with humor that is often grotesque or obscene. Intertwined with this crude comedy, however, is the wisdom of Renaissance learning, which exposes countless examples of human foolishness. Divided into two volumes, one describes a sullied giant who grows into a grand knight and prince, and the other portrays his erudite son who himself becomes a Renaissance Socrates. Rabelais' work is full of freedom and laughter, as well as a certain understanding that will give readers a renewed worldview. All That Glittered : Britain's Most Precious Metal From Adam Smith to the Gold Rush Timothy L Alborn, 1964- IRL Press at Oxford University Press, Oxford University Press USA, New York, NY, 2019
"During the century after 1750, Great Britain absorbed much of the world's supply of gold into its pockets, cupboards, and coffers when it became the only major country to adopt the gold standard as the sole basis of its currency. Over the same period, the nation's emergence was marked by a powerful combination of Protestantism, commerce, and military might, alongside preservation of its older social hierarchy. In this rich and broad-ranging work, Timothy Alborn argues for a close connection between gold and Britain's national identity. Beginning with Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations, which validated Britain's position as an economic powerhouse, and running through the mid-nineteenth century gold rushes in California and Australia, Alborn draws on contemporary descriptions of gold's value to highlight its role in financial, political, and cultural realms. He begins by narrating British interests in gold mining globally to enable the smooth operation of the gold standard. In addition to explaining the metal's function in finance, he explores its uses in war expenditure, foreign trade, religious observance, and ornamentation at home and abroad. Britons criticized foreign cultures for their wasteful and inappropriate uses of gold, even as it became a prominent symbol of status in more traditional features of British society, including its royal family, aristocracy, and military. Although Britain had been ambivalent in its embrace of gold, ultimately it enabled the nation to become the world's most modern economy and to extend its imperial reach around the globe. Workers' Movements and Strikes in the Twenty-First Century: A Global Perspective (Transforming Capitalism) Jörg Nowak; Madhumita Dutta; Peter Birke Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Incorporated, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, London, 2018
While workers movements have been largely phased out and considered out-dated in most parts of the world during the 1990s, the 21st century has seen a surge in new and unprecedented forms of strikes and workers organisations. The collection of essays in this book, spanning countries across global South and North, provides an account of strikes and working class resistance in the 21st century. Through original case studies, the book looks at the various shades of workers’ movements, analysing different forms of popular organisation as responses to new social and economic conditions, such as restructuring of work and new areas of investment. ** Review How to analyse the wave of strikes occurring around the world in the early 21st century? What are their causes, forms, and results – and what do they reveal about specific socioeconomic constellations? Is there potential for solidarity among workers in different world regions, based, for instance, on similar policies of informalisation? This volume is a perfect starting point for discussion. (Nicole Mayer-Ahuja, Professor of Sociology, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen) This book will certainly be a global reference in the studies on the new trends of workers' resistance struggles in the face of current forms of capitalist accumulation. It offers a fantastic panorama of strikes and other forms of workers fighting in a wide range of countries in all regions of the world. It has the merit of highlighting the recent phenomenon of a world wide resurgence of workers' strikes. (Roberto Véras de Oliveira, Associate Professor, Federal University of Paraíba) This book is a powerful reminder of the continuing widespread resistance to capitalism despite the global economic crisis. Bringing together a large amount of studies from Asia, the Americas, Africa and Europe, including less well-researched countries such as Indonesia and Burkina Faso, the authors emphasise the new dynamics of class struggle across the globe. A must-read for everyone interested in resisting exploitation and transforming capitalism! (Andreas Bieler, Professor of Political Economy, University of Nottingham) This edited volume on labour strikes covering working class struggles in Asia, Africa and Latin America is a pioneering attempt in the area of labour studies. Re-politicizing labour strikes on a global scale is a timely project that this volume strives to achieve. Readers of labour studies, social movements and social change should definitely pay attention to it. American prisons : their past, present and future Musick, David; Gunsaulus-Musick, Kristine;,Kristine Gunsaulus-Musick Routledge; Routledge, an imprint of the Taylor & Francis Group, London ; New York, 2017

Lotteries, Art Markets, and Visual Culture in the Low Countries, 15th-17th Centuries Sophie Raux Koninklijke Brill N.V., Brill Academic Publishers, Leiden, 2018
Lotteries, Art Markets, and Visual Culture  examines lotteries as devices for distributing images and art objects, and constructing their value in the former Low Countries. Alongside the fairs and before specialist auction sales were established, they were an atypical but popular and large-scale form of the art trade. As part of a growing entrepreneurial sensibility based on speculation and a sense of risk, they lay behind many innovations. This study looks at their actors, networks and strategies. It considers the objects at stake, their value, and the forms of visual communication intended to boost an appetite for ownership. Ultimately, it contemplates how the lottery culture impacted notions of Fortune and Vanitas in the visual arts. Sophie Raux , Ph. D. (1993), Université de Lille, is Professor of Early Modern History at Université Lumière Lyon 2. Her research publications focus primarily on history of trade Southern Netherlands France. Artes Apodemicae And Early Modern Travel Culture, 1550-1700 (intersections: Interdisciplinary Studies In Early Modern Culture) Karl A. E Enenkel; Johannes Leenderd de Jong; E. J. Brill (Lejda) Brill Academic Pub, Brill Academic Publishers, Leiden, 2019
This volume explores the early modern manuals on travelling ( Artes apodemicae ), a new genre of advice literature that originated in the sixteenth century, when it became communis opinio among intellectuals that travelling was an important means of acquiring knowledge and experience, and that an extended tour abroad was a vital, if not indispensable part of humanist, academic and political education. In this volume, the formation of this new genre, between 1550 and 1700, is studied in its historical, social and cultural context. Furthermore, the volume examines the impact of this new genre on the acquisition and collection of knowledge in the early modern period, empirical or otherwise. Contributors: Justin Stagl, Karl Enenkel, Jan Papy, Thomas Haye, Robert Seidel, Gabor Gelléri, Bernd Roling, Harald Hendrix, Jan L. de Jong, Kerstin Maria Pahl, Johanna Luggin, Marc Laureys, and Justina Spencer. **

From the rise of cyberbullying and hactivism to the issues surrounding digital privacy rights and freedom of speech, the Internet is changing the ways in which we govern and are governed as citizens. This book examines how citizens encounter and perform new sorts of rights, duties, opportunities and challenges through the Internet. By disrupting prevailing understandings of citizenship and cyberspace, the authors highlight the dynamic relationship between these two concepts. Rather than assuming that these are static or established "facts" of politics and society, the book shows how the challenges and opportunities presented by the Internet inevitably impact upon the action and understanding of political agency. In doing so, it investigates how we conduct ourselves in cyberspace through digital acts. This book provides a new theoretical understanding of what it means to be a citizen today for students and scholars across the social sciences.-- Provided by publisher

A Century of Violence in a Red City : Popular Struggle, Counterinsurgency, and Human Rights in Colombia Lesley Gill Duke University Press Books, Duke University Press, Durham, 2016
In A Century Of Violence In A Red City Lesley Gill Provides Insights Into Broad Trends Of Global Capitalist Development, Class Disenfranchisement And Dispossession, And The Decline Of Progressive Politics. Gill Traces The Rise And Fall Of The Strong Labor Unions, Neighborhood Organizations, And Working Class Of Barrancabermeja, Colombia, From Their Origins In The 1920s To Their Effective Activism For Agrarian Reforms, Labor Rights, And Social Programs In The 1960s And 1970s. Like Much Of Colombia, Barrancabermeja Came To Be Dominated By Alliances Of Right-wing Politicians, Drug Traffickers, Foreign Corporations, And Paramilitary Groups. These Alliances Reshaped The Geography Of Power And Gave Rise To A Pernicious Form Of Armed Neoliberalism. Their Violent Incursion Into Barrancabermeja's Civil Society Beginning In The 1980s Decimated The City's Social Networks, Destabilized Life For Its Residents, And Destroyed Its Working-class Organizations. As A Result, Community Leaders Are Now Left Clinging To The Toothless Discourse Of Human Rights, Which Cannot Effectively Challenge The Status Quo. In This Stark Book, Gill Captures The Grim Reality And Precarious Future Of Barrancabermeja And Other Places Ravaged By Neoliberalism And Violence. Black Gold, Militant Labor -- Cold War Crucible -- Terror And Impunity -- Unraveling -- Fragmented Sovereignty -- Narrowing Political Options And Human Rights -- The Aftermath Of Counterinsurgency. Free Will in Philosophical Theology (Bloomsbury Studies in Philosophy of Religion) Kevin Timpe Bloomsbury Academic & Professional, Bloomsbury studies in philosophy of religion, London, 2013
Free Will in Philosophical Theology takes the most recent philosophical work on free will and uses it to elucidate and explore theological doctrines involving free will. Rather than being a work of natural theology, it is a work in what has been called clarification-using philosophy to understand, develop, systematize, and explain theological claims without first raising the justification for holding the theological claims that one is working with. Timpe's aim is to show how a particular philosophical account of the nature of free will-an account known as source incompatibilism-can help us understand a range of theological doctrines.

This book explores ‘nothingness’, the negative way found in Buddhist and Christian traditions, with a focused and comparative approach. It examines the works of Nagarjuna (c. 150 CE), a Buddhist monk, philosopher and one of the greatest thinkers of classical India, and those of John of the Cross (1542-1591), a Carmelite monk, outstanding Spanish poet, and one of the greatest mystical theologians. The conception of nothingness in both the thinkers points to a paradox of linguistic transcendence and provides a novel insight into via negativa. This is the first full-length work comparing nothingness (emptiness) in Nagarjuna (Mahayana Buddhism) and John of the Cross (Christianity) in any language. It augments the comparative approach found in Buddhist-Christian comparative philosophy and theology.  This book is of especial interest to academics of Buddhist and Christian studies searching for avenues for intellectual dialogue. ** From the Back Cover This book explores ‘nothingness’, the negative way found in Buddhist and Christian traditions, with a focused and comparative approach. Acoustic Properties: Radio, Narrative, And The New Neighborhood Of The Americas Project Muse Upcc Books Tom McEnaney Northwestern University Press,, Chicago Distribution Center (CDC Presses), Evanston, Illinois, 2017
Acoustic Properties: Radio, Narrative, and the New Neighborhood of the Americas discovers the prehistory of wireless culture. It examines both the coevolution of radio and the novel in Argentina, Cuba, and the United States from the early 1930s to the late 1960s, and the various populist political climates in which the emerging medium of radio became the chosen means to produce the voice of the people.   Based on original archival research in Buenos Aires, Havana, Paris, and the United States, the book develops a literary media theory that understands sound as a transmedial phenomenon and radio as a transnational medium. Analyzing the construction of new social and political relations in the wake of the United States’ 1930s Good Neighbor Policy, Acoustic Properties challenges standard narratives of hemispheric influence through new readings of Richard Wright’s cinematic work in Argentina, Severo Sarduy’s radio plays in France, and novels by John Dos Passos, Manuel Puig, Raymond Chandler, and Carson McCullers. Alongside these writers, the book also explores Che Guevara and Fidel Castro’s Radio Rebelde, FDR’s fireside chats, Félix Caignet’s invention of the radionovela in Cuba, Evita Perón’s populist melodramas in Argentina, Orson Welles’s experimental New Deal radio, Cuban and U.S. “radio wars,” and the 1960s African American activist Robert F. Williams’s proto–black power Radio Free Dixie.   From the doldrums of the Great Depression to the tumult of the Cuban Revolution, Acoustic Properties illuminates how novelists in the radio age converted writing into a practice of listening, transforming realism as they struggled to channel and shape popular power.

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/Queen, Mother, and Stateswoman_ - Silvia Z. Mitchell.pdf
Queen, Mother, and Stateswoman : Mariana of Austria and the Government of Spain Silvia Z. Mitchell The Pennsylvania State University Press, Pennsylvania State University Press, University Park, Pennsylvania, 2019
When Philip IV of Spain died in 1665, his heir, Carlos II, was three years old. In addition to this looming dynastic crisis, decades of enormous military commitments had left Spain a virtually bankrupt state with vulnerable frontiers and a depleted army. In Silvia Z. Mitchell’s revisionist account, Queen, Mother, and Stateswoman , Queen Regent Mariana of Austria emerges as a towering figure at court and on the international stage, while her key collaborators—the secretaries, ministers, and diplomats who have previously been ignored or undervalued—take their rightful place in history. Mitchell provides a nuanced account of Mariana of Austria’s ten-year regency (1665–75) of the global Spanish Empire and examines her subsequent role as queen mother. Drawing from previously unmined primary sources, including Council of State deliberations, diplomatic correspondence, Mariana’s and Carlos’s letters, royal household papers, manuscripts, and legal documents, Mitchell describes how, over the course of her regency, Mariana led the monarchy out of danger and helped redefine the military and diplomatic blocs of Europe in Spain’s favor. She follows Mariana’s exile from court and recounts how the dowager queen used her extensive connections and diplomatic experience to move the negotiations for her son’s marriage forward, effectively exploiting the process to regain her position. A new narrative of the Spanish Habsburg monarchy in the later seventeenth century, this volume advances our knowledge of women’s legitimate political entitlement in the early modern period. It will be welcomed by scholars and students of queenship, women’s studies, and early modern Spain. Review “An imaginative and wholly original account of a ruler who is regarded as the personification of Spain’s seventeenth-century decline as an imperial power. Mitchell revises the traditional view of Mariana as the hapless pawn of her confessors and male courtiers and shows her to be a fiercely independent woman capable of decisive action in domestic and foreign affairs as well as a ruler who successfully managed to defend the interests and reputation of Spain’s Habsburg monarchy. This book is a valuable contribution to the growing body of literature on early modern queenship.” —Richard L. Kagan, author of Clio and the Crown: The Politics of History in Medieval and Early Modern Spain “Mitchell mines court archives and state records to demonstrate that Mariana of Austria had clear and consistent diplomatic and military strategies as queen regent, and he establishes her as part of a long tradition of strong female leadership in early modern European courts. This work fills a significant gap in our understanding of the late seventeenth-century Spanish court and supports recent arguments in favor of Spanish resilience rather than decline under the last Habsburgs.” —Jodi Campbell, author of At the First Table: Food and Social Identity in Early Modern Spain “Silvia Mitchell’s work is an important revisionist study of the regency of Mariana of Austria, mother of the last Spanish Habsburg. Based upon wide-ranging and detailed research, it has considerable implications for a much more positive understanding than has prevailed hitherto not only of the last decades of Habsburg rule in Spain but also, more broadly, of female political agency in early modern Europe.” —Christopher Storrs, author of The Resilience of the Spanish Monarchy, 1665 – 1700 “Countering the common perception of Mariana de Austria as weak, too young to govern, and easily manipulated, Silvia Mitchell demonstrates that Mariana was a forceful, effective regent during the period of her son’s minority (1665-75). Grounded solidly in fresh archival research, Queen, Mother, and Stateswoman will advance the historical debate on Mariana, on seventeenth-century royal favorites, and on the court of Charles II of Spain.” —Magdalena Sánchez, author of The Empress, the Queen, and the Nun: Women and Power at the Court of Philip III of Spain About the Author Silvia Z. Mitchell is Assistant Professor of Early Modern European History at Purdue University.

The End of the World : Apocalypse and Its Aftermath in Western Culture Maria Manuel Lisboa Open Book Publishers, Open Book Publishers, Cambridge, UK, 2011
Our fear of the world ending, like our fear of the dark, is ancient, deep-seated and perennial. It crosses boundaries of space and time, recurs in all human communities and finds expression in every aspect of cultural production - from pre-historic cave paintings to high-tech computer games. This book examines historical and imaginary scenarios of Apocalypse, the depiction of its likely triggers, and imagined landscapes in the aftermath of global destruction. Its discussion moves effortlessly from classic novels including Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four and Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake, to blockbuster films such as Blade Runner, Armageddon and The Terminator. The author also takes into account religious doctrine, scientific research and the visual arts to create a penetrating, multi-disciplinary study that provides profound insight into one of Western culture’s darkest and most enduring preoccupations. This book is dedicated to our planet, with best wishes for many happy returns. In memory of my mother-in-law, Winifred Brick and my uncle, Ilídio Lisboa. This World is not Conclusion. Zeppo's First Wife: New and Selected Poems (Phoenix Poets) Mazur, Gail University of Chicago Press, University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 2005
from Enormously Sad . . . Sad, so sad-compared to what? To your earlier more oblivious state? It never was oblivious enough- always those presentiments of sadness prickling the limbic. Now a voice says, Get outside yourself, go walk on the flats. The tide's gone out— but your little metal detector will detect little metallic coins of enormous sadness in the teeming wet sand, and then, the tide will come back, erasing, cleansing! And you, standing there in the salty scouring air- will you still be enormously sad, While the other world, outside your tiny purview, struck by iron, reels? World of intentional iron, pure savage organized iron of the world, it hasn't the time that you have for your puny enormous sadness. Widely acclaimed for expanding the stylistic boundaries of both the narrative and meditative lyric, Gail Mazur’s poetry crackles with verbal invention as she confronts the inevitable upheavals of a lived life. Zeppo’s First Wife, which includes excerpts from Mazur’s four previous books, as well as twenty-two new poems, is epitomized by the worldly longing of the title poem, with its searching poignancy and comic bravura. Mazur’s explorations of “this fallen world, this loony world” are deeply moving acts of empathy by a singular moral sensibility—evident from the earliest poem included here, the much-anthologized “Baseball,” a stunning bird’s-eye view of human foibles and passions. Clear-eyed, full of paradoxical griefs and appetites, her poems brave the most urgent subjects—from the fraught luscious Eden of the ballpark, to the fragility of our closest human ties, to the implications for America in a world where power and war are cataclysmic for the strong as well as the weak. from Enormously Sad . . . The Cosmic Ocean : New Answers to Big Questions Paul K. Chappell Prospecta Press, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), [N.p.], 2015
The Cosmic Ocean shares the treasures that Paul K. Chappell, a West Point graduate and Iraq War veteran, who grew up in a violent household, has extracted from trauma. To explain how these treasures—which take the form of timeless truths—can help us solve our personal, national, and global problems, this book uses personal stories and extensive research to journey through time, around the world, and into every facet of the human condition. To survive and progress as a global human family, Chappell explains that we need a paradigm shift that can transform our understanding of peace, justice, love, happiness, and what it means to be human. To help create this paradigm shift, The Cosmic Ocean explores diverse subjects such as empathy, rage, nonviolent struggle, war, beauty, religion, philosophy, science, Gandhi, the Iliad, slavery, human sacrifice, video games, sports, and our shared humanity. ** About the Author Paul K. Chappell graduated from West Point in 2002, was deployed to Iraq, and left active duty in November 2009 as a Captain. Moral Panics, the Media and the Law in Early Modern England edited by David Lemmings, Claire Walker Palgrave Macmillan Limited, New York, New York State, 2010
This book explores and exemplifies some of the subtler links between opinion, governance and law in early modern England by investigating moral panics. Modern media-driven 'law and order' panics may have originated in eighteenth-century England, with the development of the press and government sensibility to opinion, but there were earlier panics about witchcraft and popery. Essays by an experienced team of scholars discuss broadly episodes of moral panic before and after 1689, and consider their implications for changes in governance. Review 'This wide-ranging yet thematically cohesive collection succeeds not only in showcasing the talents of some of the leading historians of early modern England, but in raising fascinating questions about the relationship between the law, the press and elite and popular opinion and mentalities.' - English Historical Review 'There is a great deal to admire in this volume, which brings together a particulalry accomplished and distinguished set of contributors, and has much to say about the complex and shifting relations between authority, information and opinion.' - Peter Marshall, History About the Author DAVID LEMMINGS is Head of the School of History and Politics at the University of Adelaide, Australia. He is the author of Gentlemen and Barristers: the Inns of Court and the English Bar, 1680-1730 (Oxford, OUP, 1990), and Professors of the Law: Barristers and English Culture in the Eighteenth Century (Oxford, OUP, 2000), and editor of The British and their Laws in the Eighteenth Century (Woodbridge: Boydell Press, 2005). CLAIRE WALKER is Lecturer in History at the University of Adelaide, Australia. Her published research has focussed on religious women and the politics of recusancy in early modern England. She is the author of Gender and Politics in Early Modern Europe: English Nuns in France and the Low Countries (Basingstoke: Palgrave-Macmillan, 2003).
