The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Vol. III Gibbon, Edward, 1737-1794 null, null, null
Spanning thirteen centuries from the age of Trajan to the taking of Constantinople by the Turks, "Decline & Fall" is one of the greatest narratives in European Literature. About the Author Edward Gibbon was born in 1737 in Putney, England, and was the only child of his parents to survive infancy. Although his education was frequently interrupted by ill health, his knowledge was far-reaching. His brief career as an undergraduate at Magdalen College, Oxford, ended when he joined the Catholic Church. His father sent him to Lausanne, in Switzerland, where, while studying Greek and French for the next five years, he re-joined the Protestant Church. In 1761 he published his Essai sur l'étude de la Littérature ; the English version appeared in 1764. Meanwhile, Gibbon served as a captain in the Hampshire Militia until 1763, when he returned to the Continent. It was while he was in Rome in 1764 that he first conceived the work that was eventually to become The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire . In 1774, after the death of his father, Gibbon settled in London and was elected to Parliament where he sat for the next eight years, although he never once spoke in the Commons. He also took his place among the literary circles of London. The first volume of his famous History was published in 1776; it was highly praised for its learning and style but incurred some censure for its treatment of the early Christians. The second and third volumes appeared in 1781 and the final three, which were written in Lausanne, in 1788. He died while on a visit to his friend, Lord Sheffield, who posthumously edited Gibbon's autobiographical papers and published them in 1796. http://www.archive.org/details/historydeclinefa02gibb

From the Midwife's Bag to the Patient's File: Public Health in Eastern and Southeastern Europe (CEU Press Studies in the History of Medicine) Heike Karge; Friederike Kind-Kovács; Sara Bernasconi Central European University Press, CEU Press studies in the history of medicine, volume IX, Budapest ; New York, 2017
This volume offers an analysis of the intertwined relationship between public health and the biopolitical dimensions of state- and nation building in Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe. It challenges the idea of diverging paths towards modernity of Europe s western and eastern countries by not only identifying ideas, discourses and practices of solving public health issues that were shared among political regimes in the region; it also uncovers the ways in which, since the late nineteenth century, the biopolitical organization of the state both originated from and shaped an emerging common European framework. The broad range of local case studies stretches from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czechoslovakia, the GDR, Greece, and Hungary, to Poland, Serbia, the Soviet Union, and Yugoslavia. Taking a time span that begins in the late nineteenth century and ends in the post-socialist era, the book makes an original contribution to scholarship examining the relationship between public health, medicine, and state- and nation building in Europe s long twentieth century. Close readings and dense descriptions of local discourses and practices of public health help to reflect on the transnational and global entanglements in the sphere of public health. In doing so, this volume facilitates comparisons on the regional, European, and global level. ** Cover 1 Series title page 3 Title page 4 Copyright page 5 TABLE OF CONTENTS 6 List of Figures 8 Acknowledgments 10 INTRODUCTION: From the Midwife’s Bag to the Patient’s File: Public Health in Eastern Europe 12 PART I. Cognitive Impairment and Depression in Older Patients Martin Steinberg; Paul B. Rosenberg Oxford University Press Academic US, 1, 20170815
Cognitive impairment and depression in older people have challenged clinicians and families for decades. These conditions affect well over half of people after age 65 with an incidence that increases with advancing age. Many factors account for this including the aging brain, loss of purpose, social isolation, personal losses, medical morbidity, and others. The mortality, disability, and burdens associated with these conditions, affecting patients, family members, and society at large are legion. Advances in epidemiology, brain science, therapeutics, and in service delivery continue to improve our understanding of these conditions, their causes, and the best ways to treat them. Despite this cognitive impairment and depression in later life remain underdiagnosed and undertreated in the United States. This book provides a single source for clinicians who treat older people to become more effective in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of these challenging late life conditions. It offers a pragmatic, easy-to-use, resource that guides clinicians in how to best evaluate and treat older people with depression and cognitive impairment. **

Novel Shocks : Urban Renewal and the Origins of Neoliberalism Myka Tucker-Abramson Fordham University Press, Fordham University Press, New York, 2019
Throughout the 1950s, a coalition of developers, politicians, and planners bulldozed vast areas of land deemed “slums” or “blighted” to make way for freeways, public and private housing projects, cultural centers, and skyscrapers. While the program was national, New York was ground zero, and the demolition and monumental reconstruction of the city created a distinctive urban sensorium, rooted in the new segregated landscapes of prosperous white private space and poor black public space. Novel Shocks situates these landscapes at the center of the midcentury novel, arguing that James Baldwin, Ralph Ellison, Patricia Highsmith, Ayn Rand, William Burroughs, Sylvia Plath, and Warren Miller all registered these new urban spaces as traumatic “shocks” that required new aesthetic forms. Rejecting older shock-based modernisms, these novelists forged a new modernism, which reimagined shock as a therapeutic force that would create a more flexible, self-reliant, and resilient subject that would nourish neoliberalism’s roots. In offering a cultural prehistory of neoliberalism, Novel Shocks resituates the Cold War novel as a key archive for understanding neoliberalism’s emergence and offers a more materialist and historically grounded account of neoliberalism’s subjective, affective, and ideological structures. **

The Music of Georges Auric : A Documented Catalogue in Four Volumes Schmidt, Carl B. Edwin Mellen Press, Edwin Mellen Press, Lewiston, 2012
This is the first catalogue of an important twentieth century musical composer. Auric was influential in the twentieth-century art scene, and worked with Jean Cocteau, Pablo Picasso, and George Bernard Shaw among others. This serves as the first comprehensive catalogue of the orchestral, vocal, and chamber music composed by Georges Auric, one of France's most important twentieth-century musicians. Approximately three hundred-fifty compositions are considered here with full descriptions of all known printed and manuscript sources; locations of literary works on which some are based; selections of important reviews; discographies and lists of videos; and relevant performance data including first performances or showings. Auric was an influential figure in French art and culture and was widely known to the entire French artistic establishment. His compositional abilities were extremely facile and he could write a significant film score in the short time of a few weeks. On more than one occasion he scored four or more films in the same year in addition to a myriad of other duties. He was a child prodigy who studied at the Paris Conservatory and the Schola Cantorum while still a teenager. Later in life he was a major member of the so called Les Six (Georges Auric, Louis Durey, Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud, Francis Poulenc, and Germaine Tailleferre), which was a major force in twentieth century music. With the recent interest in Auric's contribution to films, it provides rich detail culled from libraries and private archives around the world, numerous newspapers and journals, unpublished letters by Auric, and the secondary literature. With the publication of this catalogue all the members of Les Six are now represented. **

Wilhelm Raabe: 'German Moonlight', 'h Xter and Corvey', 'at the Sign of the Wild Man' (Modern Humanities Research Association New Translations) Wilhelm Raabe; translated by Alison E. Martin, Erich Lehmann and Michael Ritterson; edited by Florian Krobb Modern Humanities Research Association, New translations / Modern Humanities Research Association, London, 2012
This volume assembles English translations of three of Wilhelm Raabe's most intriguing narratives. Raabe (1831-1910) was one of the most complex and multi-layered German writers of the second half of the nineteenth century. The three pieces published here for the first time in English are: 'German Moonlight', a tongue-in-cheek study of lunacy and split personality as a quintessentially German condition; 'Höxter and Corvey', an unsettling reconstruction of civil unrest and anti-Jewish violence in the seventeenth century which advocates tolerance and sobriety in troubled times; and At the Sign of The Wild Man, an inverted genre piece in which a rural idyll is devastated by an agent of global capitalism. All three narratives, written during the first half of the 1870s, contain stinging criticism of the mentality of complacency so prevalent in the newly-founded German Empire; but they also offer moving stories of personal crisis, quiet heroism and noble resignation. **

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/NSFW_ Sex, Humor, and Risk in S - Susanna Paasonen.pdf
NSFW: Sex, Humor, and Risk in Social Media (The MIT Press) Susanna Paasonen, Kylie Jarrett & Ben Light The MIT Press, MIT Press, Cambridge, 2019
An exploration of how and why social media content is tagged as “not safe for work” and an argument against conflating sexual content with risk. The hashtag #NSFW (not safe for work) acts as both a warning and an invitation. NSFW tells users, “We dare you to click on this link! And by the way, don't do it until after work!” Unlike the specificity of movie and television advisories (“suggestive dialogue,” “sexual content”), NSFW signals, nonspecifically, sexually explicit content that ranges from nude selfies to pornography. NSFW looks at how and why social media content is tagged “not safe” and shows how this serves to conflate sexual content and risk. The authors argue that the notion of “unsafety” extends beyond the risk of losing one's job or being embarrassed at work to an unspecified sense of risk attached to sexually explicit media content and sexual communication in general. The authors examine NSFW practices of tagging and flagging on a range of social media platforms; online pornography and its dependence on technology; user-generated NSFW content―in particular, the dick pic and associated issues of consent, desire, agency, and social power; the deployment of risqué humor in the workplace; and sexist and misogynist online harassment that functions as an enforcer of inequalities. They argue against the categorical effacement of sexual content by means of an all-purpose hashtag and urge us to shift considerations of safety from pictorial properties to issues of context and consent.

Sexuality in Medieval Europe: Doing Unto Others (3rd Edition) Ruth Mazo Karras Routledge, an imprint of the Taylor & Francis Group, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2017
Challenging the way the Middle Ages have been treated in general histories of sexuality, Sexuality in Medieval Europe shows how views at the time were conflicted and complicated; there was no single medieval attitude towards sexuality any more than there is one modern attitude. Focusing on marital sexual activity, as well as behavior that was seen as transgressive, the chapters cover such topics as chastity, the role of the church, and non-reproductive activity. Combining an overview of research on the topic with original interpretations, Ruth Mazo Karras demonstrates that medieval culture developed sexual identities that were quite distinct from the identities we think of today, yet were still ancestral to our own. Using a wide collection of evidence from the late antique period until the fifteenth century, this fully revised third edition has been updated to include the latest scholarship throughout, including expanded coverage of Islamic and Jewish cultures and new ideas on how medieval sexual violence relates to the modern world. A new companion website supplements the text featuring an interactive timeline of key events, links to key primary sources, and references to further reading. * Sexuality in Medieval Europe is essential reading for those who study medieval history and culture. ** About the Author Ruth Mazo Karras is Distinguished Teaching Professor of History at the University of Minnesota. Her books include the Oxford Handbook of Women and Gender in Medieval Europe edited with Judith M. Bennett (2013) , Unmarriages: Women, Men, and Sexual Unions in the Middle Ages (2012) and From Boys to Men: Formations of Masculinity in Late Medieval Europe (2002).

New Directions in Social and Cultural History Sasha Handley, Rohan McWilliam, Lucy Noakes, Andrew Wood Bloomsbury Academic, an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, New directions in social and cultural history, London, UK, 2018
"What does it mean to be a social and cultural historian today? In the wake of the 'cultural turn', and in an age of digital and public history, what challenges and opportunities await historians in the early 21st century? In this exciting new text, leading historians reflect on key developments in their fields and argue for a range of 'new directions' in social and cultural history. Focusing on emerging areas of historical research such as the history of the emotions and environmental history, New Directions in Social and Cultural History is an invaluable guide to the current and future state of the field. The book is divided into three clear sections, each with an editorial introduction, and covering key thematic areas: histories of the human, the material world, and challenges and provocations. Each chapter in the collection provides an introduction to the key and recent developments in its specialist field, with their authors then moving on to argue for what they see as particularly important shifts and interventions in the theory and methodology and suggest future developments. New Directions in Social and Cultural History provides a comprehensive and insightful overview of this burgeoning field which will be important reading for all students and scholars of social and cultural history and historiography."-- Provided by publisher

Warlords, Strongman Governors, and the State in Afghanistan Mukhopadhyay, Dipali Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), New York, NY, 2014
Warlords have come to represent enemies of peace, security, and 'good governance' in the collective intellectual imagination. This book asserts that not all warlords are created equal. Under certain conditions, some become effective governors on behalf of the state. This provocative argument is based on extensive fieldwork in Afghanistan, where Mukhopadhyay examined warlord-governors who have served as valuable exponents of the Karzai regime in its struggle to assert control over key segments of the countryside. She explores the complex ecosystems that came to constitute provincial political life after 2001 and exposes the rise of 'strongman' governance in two provinces. While this brand of governance falls far short of international expectations, its emergence reflects the reassertion of the Afghan state in material and symbolic terms that deserve our attention. This book pushes past canonical views of warlordism and state building to consider the logic of the weak state as it has arisen in challenging, conflict-ridden societies like Afghanistan. ** Review "Mukhopadhyay brings the much abused category of "warlord" to life in this innovative and path breaking study of regional politics in Afghanistan. It provides the previously missing analytic rigor in a comparative study of the fraught relationship of a weak state center and its unruly peripheries." Thomas Barfield, Professor of Anthropology, Boston University "This is an outstanding volume not only for the courageous fieldwork on which it is based and its subsequent empirical insights, but because it provides a needed alternative to outdated notions of state building. It challenges the too often accepted idea that power equals centralization. It also takes our focus away from normative, and nominal structures to the real informal processes behind any kind of authority. Third, it once again shows that the search for political perfection may be the worst enemy of basic governance. Should be read by anyone interested in 21st century politics." Miguel Angel Centeno, Musgrave Professor of Sociology, Princeton University "Warlords, Strongman Governors, and the State in Afghanistan could not be timelier. This book is among the few that take seriously the dynamic processes of state-building in Afghanistan and the resilience of its current and surprisingly resilient phase. Mukhopadhyay provides a keen analysis of how and under what conditions state authority benefits from local warlord strengths in terms of personal reputation, charisma and skill as a patron. Through extensive field research in Afghanistan, Mukhopadhyay shows how politics in Afghanistan really works, and reveals concrete and specific information on how the convergence of politics at the center and in the provinces makes the Afghan state stronger in significant ways. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in contemporary strategies of state-building generally and in this important process in this critical region." William Reno, Professor of Political Science, University of Wisconsin "Few terms are as pejorative in common usage as "warlord", and warlordism has been a source of great suffering in many settings. In Warlords, Strongman Governors, and the State in Afghanistan, however, Dipali Mukhopadhyay argues that Afghan warlordism has had highly variable dynamics and consequences: while some strongmen have brought suffering and instability, others have actually advanced the cause of political order in a weak state, with systematic variations in local conditions accounting for the difference. She builds her case on a foundation of richly detailed field research, with results that pose important implications for counterinsurgency, governance reform, and theories of political development. Her provocative analysis will cause both scholars and policy makers to re-examine their views on this critical topic." Stephen Biddle, Professor of Political Science and International Affairs, The George Washington University Book Description In this book Dipali Mukhopadhyay argues that Afghani warlords, often considered the enemy of peace, security, and good governance, can under certain conditions become effective governors on behalf of the state. Based on extensive field work, she shows that although this brand of governance falls far short of international expectations, its emergence reflects the reassertion of the Afghan state in material and symbolic terms that deserve our attention. Freedom Libraries : The Untold Story of Libraries for African Americans in the South Mike Selby Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, Incorporated, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, Lanham, 2019
Freedom Libraries: The Untold Story of Libraries for African-Americans in the South. As the Civil Rights Movement exploded across the United States, the media of the time was able to show the rest of the world images of horrific racial violence. And while some of the bravest people of the 20th century risked their lives for the right to simply order a cheeseburger, ride a bus, or use a clean water fountain, there was another virtually unheard of struggle—this one for the right to read. Although illegal, racial segregation was strictly enforced in a number of American states, and public libraries were not immune. Numerous libraries were desegregated on paper only: there would be no cards given to African-Americans, no books for them read, and no furniture for them to use. It was these exact conditions that helped create Freedom Libraries. Over eighty of these parallel libraries appeared in the Deep South, staffed by civil rights voter registration workers. While the grassroots nature of the libraries meant they varied in size and quality, all of them created the first encounter many African-Americans had with a library. Terror, bombings, and eventually murder would be visited on the Freedom Libraries—with people giving up their lives so others could read a library book. This book delves into how these libraries were the heart of the Civil Rights Movement, and the remarkable courage of the people who used them. They would forever change libraries and librarianship, even as they helped the greater movement change the society these libraries belonged to. Photographs of the libraries bring this little-known part of American history to life. **

New Directions in Social and Cultural History Sasha Handley, Rohan McWilliam, Lucy Noakes, Andrew Wood Bloomsbury UK, New directions in social and cultural history, London, UK, 2018

Theory of Social Choice on Networks : Preference, Aggregation, and Coordination Wynn C. Stirling Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, United Kingdom, 2016
Classical social choice theory relies heavily on the assumption that all individuals have fixed preference orderings. This highly original book presents a new theory of social preferences that explicitly accounts for important social phenomena such as coordination, compromise, negotiation and altruism. Drawing on cybernetics and network theory, it extends classical social choice theory by constructing a framework that allows for dynamic preferences that are modulated by the situation-dependent social influence that they exert on each other. In this way the book shows how members of a social network may modulate their preferences to account for social context. This important expansion of social choice theory will be of interest to readers in a wide variety of disciplines, including economists and political scientists concerned with choice theory as well as computer scientists and engineers working on network theory. **

Novel Shocks : Urban Renewal and the Origins of Neoliberalism Tucker-Abramson, Myka Fordham University Press (Lightning Source), Place of publication not identified, 2018

NSFW: Sex, Humor, and Risk in Social Media (The MIT Press) Susanna Paasonen; Kylie Jarrett; Ben Light The MIT Press, MIT Press, Cambridge, 2019

Lou Reed's Transformer (33 1/3, 131) Furman, Ezra Bloomsbury Publishing Plc Bloomsbury Academic, 33 1/3, 1st ed, New York, 2018
"Transformer, Lou Reed's most enduringly popular album, is described with varying labels: it's often called a glam rock album, a proto-punk album, a commercial breakthrough for Lou Reed, and an album about being gay. And yet, it doesn't neatly fit into any of these descriptors. Buried underneath the radio-friendly exterior lie coded confessions of the subversive, wounded intelligence that gives this album its staying power as a work of art. Here Lou Reed managed to make a fun, accessible rock'n'roll record that is also a troubled meditation on the ambiguities - sexual, musical and otherwise - that defined his public persona and helped make him one of the most fascinating and influential figures in rock history. Through close listening and personal reflections, songwriter Ezra Furman explores Reed's and Transformer's unstable identities, and the secrets the songs challenge us to uncover."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

The Last Supper : The Plight of Christians in Arab Lands Klaus Wivel; translated by Mark Kline New Vessel Press, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., New York, 2016
“A compelling story of the ethnic cleansing of Christian communities caught in the crossfire of the Middle East at war... Urgent and passionate” (Kirkus Reviews). In 2013, alarmed by scant attention paid to the hardships endured by the 7.5 million Christians in the Middle East, journalist Klaus Wivel—who practices no religion himself—traveled to Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt, and the Palestinian territories on a quest to learn more about their fate. He found an oppressed minority, constantly under threat of death and humiliation, increasingly desperate in the face of rising Islamic extremism and without hope that their situation would improve, or anyone would come to their aid. Wivel spoke with priests whose churches have been burned, citizens who feel like strangers in their own countries, and entire communities whose only hope for survival may be fleeing into exile. With the increase of religious violence in recent years, The Last Supper is a prescient and unsettling account of a severely beleaguered religious group living, so it seems, on borrowed time. In this book, Wivel recounts this humanitarian crisis in detail and asks why we have we not done more to protect these people.

Creole in the Archive: Imagery, Presence and the Location of the Caribbean Figure (Critical Perspectives on Theory, Culture and Politics) Roshini Kempadoo Reader in Media Practice School of Arts and Digital Industries University of East L Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Critical perspectives on theory, culture and politics, London ; Lanham Maryland, ©2016
The image of the Caribbean figure has been reconfigured by photography from the mid-19th century onwards. Initial images associated with the slave and indentured worker from the locations and legacies associated with plantation economies have been usurped by visual representations emerging from struggles for social, political and cultural autonomy. Contemporary visual artists engaging with the Caribbean as a 21st century globalised space have focused on visually re-imagining historical material and events as memories, histories and dreamscapes. Creole in the Archive uses photographic analysis to explore portraits, postcards and social documentation of the colonial worker between 1850 and 1960 and contemporary, often digital, visual art by post-independent, postcolonial Caribbean artists. Drawing on Derridean ideas of the archive, the book reconceptualises the Caribbean visual archive as contiguous and relational. It argues that using a creolising archive practice, the conjuncture of contemporary artworks, historical imagery and associated locations can develop insightful new multimodal representations of Caribbean subjectivities.

The Fifth Gospel : The Gospel of Thomas Comes of Age Stephen J. Patterson; Hans-Gebhard Bethge; James M. Robinson Trinity Press International, Bloomsbury USA, Harrisburg, Pa, 1998
In December 1945, at the base of cliffs that run along the Nile River near the modern-day town of Nag Hammadi, an Egyptian farmer discovered, in a sealed jar, thirteen ancient Coptic codices containing more than fifty separate tracts. This discovery represented arguably the most significant manuscript discovery of the twentieth century for the study of the New Testament and Christian origins. Of all the texts in this Nag Hammadi Library, none has been more celebrated than the Gospel of Thomas - a Gospel that has played a crucial role in the newly emerging view of early Christianity as a very diverse phenomenon and in the recent revival of historical Jesus studies. Now, after more than fifty years of study, the best text and the best translation of Thomas are presented here in user-friendly form by the Berlin Working Group for Coptic Gnostic Writings, with Stephen J. Patterson and James M. Robinson. In addition, two essays have been included for persons who may be unfamiliar with this new Gospel or with events that led to its discovery and publication. The first, by Patterson, is a general introduction to the Gospel of Thomas as it appears fifty years after its discovery. The second, by Robinson, tells the fascinating story of that discovery itself by one who was directly involved in bringing this new Gospel to light. An annotated list "for further reading" completes the volume. Stephen J. Patterson is Associate Professor of New Testament at Eden Theological Seminary and author of The God of Jesus: The Historical Jesus and the Search for Meaning (Trinity Press). James M. Robinson is the former director of the Institute for Antiquity and Christianity, Professor Emeritus at The Claremont Graduate School, and editor of The Nag Hammadi Library. **

Discovered centuries before by a Spanish explorer, Vegas Springs had acquired the status of a myth, its very existence questioned and its precise location unknown except to a few Indians and the occasional lucky traveller who stumbled upon it. In the midst of the desert, it had one redeeming feature: life-giving water. Seb Ashton was one of those lucky ones. With hardcases on his tail, he had fled into the desert, only finding out too late that wandering in a scorching hellhole with an empty canteen was no escape. Now, the fabled watering hole could prove his salvation. However, his ruthless pursuers had been determined enough to follow him across the desert wastes and Ashton knew he must face a showdown - in the blistering sands of Vegas.

With the help of over one hundred illustrations spanning three centuries, Richard Cohen investigates the role of visual images in European Jewish history. The interaction of Jews with the visual arts takes place, as Cohen says, in a vast gallery of prints, portraits, books, synagogue architecture, ceremonial art, modern Jewish painting and sculpture, political broadsides, monuments, medals, and memorabilia. Pointing to recent scholarship that overturns the stereotype of Jews as people of the text, unconcerned with the visual, Cohen shows how the coming of the modern period expanded the relationship of Jews to the visual realm far beyond the religious context. Toward the end of the nineteenth century, the study and collecting of Jewish art became a legitimate and even passionate pursuit, and signaled the entry of Jews into the art world as painters, collectors, and dealers.

Gypsy Music: The Balkans and Beyond (Reverb) Alan Ashton-Smith Reaktion Books, Reaktion Books Ltd., London, UK, 2017
Gypsies have for centuries been simultaneously vilified and romanticized—associated with criminality and dirt, but at the same time with color, magic, and music. Gypsy music is popular around the world and often performed with gusto at major events, including at weddings in Bulgaria, jazz bars in Paris, and festivals in the United States. In Gypsy Music , Alan Ashton-Smith explores why this music has such wide appeal, surveying the varied styles that are considered to be gypsy music and asking what links them together. The book begins in the Balkans, home to the world’s largest Romani populations and a major site of gypsy music production. But just as the traditionally nomadic Roma have traveled globally, so has their music. Gypsy music styles have roots and associations outside of the Balkans, including Russian Romani guitar music, flamenco and gypsy jazz, and the more recent forms of gypsy punk and Balkan beats. Covering the thirteenth century to the present day, and with a geographical scope that ranges from rural Romania to New York by way of Budapest, Moscow, and Andalusia, Gypsy Music reveals the remarkable diversity of this exuberant art form. ** Cover 1 Gypsy Music: The Balkans and Beyond 5 Imprint Page 6 Contents 7 Introduction 9 1. Lou Reed's Transformer (33 1/3, 131) Furman, Ezra Bloomsbury Academic, Bloomsbury Publishing, 33 1/3, 1st ed, New York, 2018
