Forces of Production : A Social History of Industrial Automation David F. Noble; with a new preface by the author Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2017
Focusing on the design and implementation of computer-based automatic machine tools, David F. Noble challenges the idea that technology has a life of its own. Technology has been both a convenient scapegoat and a universal solution, serving to disarm critics, divert attention, depoliticize debate, and dismiss discussion of the fundamental antagonisms and inequalities that continue to beset America. This provocative study of the postwar automation of the American metal-working industry—the heart of a modern industrial economy—explains how dominant institutions like the great corporations, the universities, and the military, along with the ideology of modern engineering shape, the development of technology. Noble shows how the system of "numerical control," perfected at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and put into general industrial use, was chosen over competing systems for reasons other than the technical and economic superiority typically advanced by its promoters. Numerical control took shape at an MIT laboratory rather than in a manufacturing setting, and a market for the new technology was created, not by cost-minded producers, but instead by the U. S. Air Force. Competing methods, equally promising, were rejected because they left control of production in the hands of skilled workers, rather than in those of management or programmers. Noble demonstrates that engineering design is influenced by political, economic, managerial, and sociological considerations, while the deployment of equipment—illustrated by a detailed case history of a large General Electric plant in Massachusetts—can become entangled with such matters as labor classification, shop organization, managerial responsibility, and patterns of authority. In its examination of technology as a human, social process, Forces of Production is a path-breaking contribution to the understanding of this phenomenon in American society. ** Contents 8 Preface to the Transaction Edition 10 Preface 12 Acknowledgments 18 Part One: COMMAND AND CONTROL 20 1. lgli/Philippa Gregory [The Plantagenet and Tudor Novels 06] The Constant Princess.epub
The Constant Princess (The Plantagenet and Tudor Novels Book 4) by Philippa Gregory HarperCollins Publishers Limited, The Plantagenet and Tudor Novels - 6, 2005
Paperback, 390 pages Published 2005 by Washington Square Press "I am Catalina, Princess of Spain, daughter of the two greatest monarchs the world has ever known...and I will be Queen of England." Thus, bestselling author Philippa Gregory introduces one of her most unforgettable heroines: Katherine of Aragon. Known to history as the Queen who was pushed off her throne by Anne Boleyn, here is a Katherine the world has forgotten: the enchanting princess that all England loved. First married to Henry VIII's older brother, Arthur, Katherine's passion turns their arranged marriage into a love match; but when Arthur dies, the merciless English court and her ambitious parents -- the crusading King and Queen of Spain -- have to find a new role for the widow. Ultimately, it is Katherine herself who takes control of her own life by telling the most audacious lie in English history, leading her to the very pinnacle of power in England. Set in the rich beauty of Moorish Spain and the glamour of the Tudor court, The Constant Princess presents a woman whose constancy helps her endure betrayal, poverty, and despair, until the inevitable moment when she steps into the role she has prepared for all her life: Henry VIII's Queen, Regent, and commander of the English army in their greatest victory against Scotland. From Publishers Weekly As youngest daughter to the Spanish monarchs and crusaders King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, Catalina, princess of Wales and of Spain, was promised to the English Prince Arthur when she was three. She leaves Spain at 15 to fulfill her destiny as queen of England, where she finds true love with Arthur (after some initial sourness) as they plot the future of their kingdom together. Arthur dies young, however, leaving Catalina a widow and ineligible for the throne. Before his death, he extracts a promise from his wife to marry his younger brother Henry in order to become queen anyway, have children and rule as they had planned, a situation that can only be if Catalina denies that Arthur was ever her lover. Gregory's latest (after Earthly Joys) compellingly dramatizes how Catalina uses her faith, her cunning and her utter belief in destiny to reclaim her rightful title. By alternating tight third-person narration with Catalina's unguarded thoughts and gripping dialogue, the author presents a thorough, sympathetic portrait of her heroine and her transformation into Queen Katherine. Gregory's skill for creating suspense pulls the reader along despite the historical novel's foregone conclusion. Paperback, 390 pages

The Constant Princess (The Plantagenet and Tudor Novels Book 4) Gregory, Philippa Beyond Words/Atria Books, 2011
From #1 New York Times bestselling author and "queen of royal fiction" ( USA TODAY ) Philippa Gregory comes the remarkable story of Katherine of Aragon, Princess of Spain, daughter of two great monarchs, and eventual Queen of England when she marries the infamous King Henry VIII. Daughter of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain, Katherine has been fated her whole life to marry Prince Arthur of England. When they meet and are married, the match becomes as passionate as it is politically expedient. The young lovers revel in each other's company and plan the England they will make together. But tragically, aged only fifteen, Arthur falls ill and extracts from his sixteen-year-old bride a deathbed promise to marry his brother, Henry; become Queen; and fulfill their dreams and her destiny. Widowed and alone in the avaricious world of the Tudor court, Katherine has to sidestep her father-in-law's desire for her and convince him, and an incredulous Europe, that her marriage to Arthur was never consummated, that there is no obstacle to marriage with Henry. For seven years, she endures the treachery of spies, the humiliation of poverty, and intense loneliness and despair while she waits for the inevitable moment when she will step into the role she has prepared for all her life. Then, like her warrior mother, Katherine must take to the battlefield and save England when its old enemies the Scots come over the border and there is no one to stand against them but the new Queen.

The Constant Princess (The Plantagenet and Tudor Novels Book 4) Gregory, Philippa Harper, Simon & Schuster, [N.p.], 2005
Review One of Gregory's great strengths as a novelist is her ability to take familiar historical figures and flesh them into living breathing human beings. The Constant Princess is a worthy successor to her previous novels about the Tudors. Daily Express Gregory's research is impeccable which makes her imaginative fiction all the more convincing. Daily Mail Gregory is great at conjuring a Tudor film-set of gorgeous gowns and golden-lattered dining. She invokes some swoonsome images...while the politics are personal enough to remain pertinent. Katherine of Aragon is born Catalina, the Spanish Infanta, to parents who are both rulers and warriors. Aged four, she is betrothed to Arthur, Prince of Wales, and is raised to be Queen of England. She is never in doubt that it is her destiny to rule that far-off, wet, cold land. Her faith is tested when her prospective father-in-law greets her arrival in her new country with a great insult; Arthur seems little better than a boy; the food is strange and the customs coarse. Slowly she adapts to the first Tudor court, and life as Arthurs wife grows ever more bearable. But when the studious young man dies, she is left to make her own future: how can she now be queen, and found a dynasty? Only by marrying Arthurs young brother, the sunny but spoilt Henry. His father and grandmother are against it; her powerful parents prove little use. Yet Katherine is her mothers daughter and her fighting spirit is strong. She will do anything to achieve her aim; even if it means telling the greatest lie, and holding to it. Philippa Gregory proves yet again that behind the apparently familiar face of history lies an astonishing story: of women warriors influencing the future of Europe, of revered heroes making deep mistakes, and of an untold love story which changes the fate of a nation.

The Roman Colosseum Adam Woog ReferencePoint Press, Incorporated, History's Great Structures, 2013
The Roman Colosseum is the most remarkable remnant of the mighty Roman Empire, which remains one of the greatest realms in world history. Completed in 80 AD, the Colosseum was the site of countless spectacular performances, most famously the bloody games that pitted warriors called gladiators against each other and wild animals. The Colosseum later fell into centuries of neglect and ruin, but today the existing shell of the great arena is a beloved icon of Italy and one of the most recognizable structures in the world.

They called themselves Management Consultants…. Welcome to the world of Martin Kihn, a former standup comic and Emmy® Award-nominated television writer who decided to “go straight” and earn his MBA at a prestigious Ivy League university. Paganism, Traditionalism, Nationalism: Narratives of Russian Rodnoverie (Studies in Contemporary Russia) Kaarina Aitamurto Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), [N.p.], 2016
Rodnoverie was one of the first new religious movements to emerge following the collapse of the Soviet Union, its development providing an important lens through which to view changes in post-Soviet religious and political life. Rodnovers view social and political issues as inseparably linked to their religiosity but do not reflect the liberal values dominant among Western Pagans. Indeed, among the conservative and nationalist movements often associated with Rodnoverie in Russia, traditional anti-Western and anti-Semitic rhetoric has recently been overshadowed by anti-Islam and anti-migrant tendencies. Providing a fascinating overview of the history, organisations, adherents, beliefs and practices of Rodnoverie this book presents several different narratives; as a revival of the native Russian or Slavic religion, as a nature religion and as an alternative to modern values and lifestyles. Drawing upon primary sources, documents and books this analysis is supplemented with extensive fieldwork carried out among Rodnoverie communities in Russia and will be of interest to scholars of post-Soviet society, new religious movements and contemporary Paganism in general. ** Cover 1 Half Title 2 Series information 3 Title Page 4 Copyright Page 5 Table of Contents 6 List of Figures 8 List of Acronyms 9 Acknowledgements 10 1 Introduction 12 Fieldwork and Ethical Considerations 18 Some Central Concepts: Rodnoverie as a Religion 23 Notes 27 2 History of Rodnoverie 29 Prehistory of Rodnoverie: Romanticism and Western Esotericism 31 Paganism in Soviet Imagery 35 The Early Phases of Rodnoverie 37 The Period of Establishing the Movement 51 New Currencies and the Present Situation 64 Notes 68 3 Some Central Features of the Religion 74 Size and Composition of the Movement 74 Theology and Rituals 76 Notes 81 4 Saving the Nation 83 The Nationalistic Rodnoverie Narrative 88 Spirit, Blood and Soil 90 Saving the Culture 107 International Politics: Nationalism as a Guarantee of Social Solidarity and Justice 114 Summary 125 Notes 129 5 The End of ‘Mono-Ideologies’ 133 Pluralist Paganism as an Alternative to ‘Mono-Religions’ 138 Paganism as Folk Dissent 142 Freedom and Liberation 152 Summary 161 Notes 165 6 Back to the Real Thing 168 Seeking Communality 173 Consumerism and Anti-Materialism 178 Risk Society and Healthy Way of Life 190 Summary 193 Notes 195 7 Discussion and Conclusions 199 Notes 209 Bibliography 211 Index 229

Tudor Court Series - 6 books - The Boleyn Inheritance / The Other Boleyn Girl / The Other Queen / The Constant Princess / The Virgins Lover / The Queens Fool Gregory, Philippa Washington Square Press, The Plantagenet and Tudor Novels, #6, 2005
<p>I am Catalina, Princess of Spain, daughter of the two greatest monarchs the world has ever known...and I will be Queen of England." <p></p> Thus, bestselling author Philippa Gregory introduces one of her most unforgettable heroines: Katherine of Aragon. <p></p> <i>"They tell me nothing but lies here and they think they can break my spirit. I believe what I choose and say nothing. I am not as simple as I seem."</i> Widowed and alone in the avaricious world of the Tudor court, Katherine has to sidestep her father-in-law's desire for her and convince him, and an incredulous Europe, that her marriage to Arthur was never consummated, that there is no obstacle to marriage with Henry. <p></p> <i>"It was my dying husband's hope, my mother's wish, and God's will that I should be Queen of England; and for them and for the country, I will be Queen of England until I die."</i> Raised on the battlefield and in the most beautiful Moorish palace in the world, sent to England alone at the age of sixteen to take her place in a court where she couldn't speak the language, and abandoned and forced to endure poverty after the death of her husband, Katherine remained a woman of indomitable spirit, unwavering faith, and extraordinary strength. Philippa Gregory brings to life one of history's most inspiring women and creates one of the most compelling characters in historical fiction.</p><h3>Publishers Weekly</h3><p>As youngest daughter to the Spanish monarchs and crusaders King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, Catalina, princess of Wales and of Spain, was promised to the English Prince Arthur when she was three. Agent, Melanie Jackson. (Dec.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.</p>

Performing Everyday Life in Argentine Popular Theater, 1890--1934 Victoria Lynn Garrett Springer International Publishing, Springer Nature, Cham, Switzerland, 2018
This book examines the prolific and widely-attended popular theater boom of the género chico criollo in the context of Argentina’s modernization. Victoria Lynn Garrett examines how selected plays mediated the impact of economic liberalism, technological changes, new competing and contradictory gender roles, intense labor union activity, and the foreign/nativist dichotomy. Popular theaters served as spaces for cultural agency by portraying conventional and innovative performances of daily life. This dramatic corpus was a critical mass cultural medium that allowed audiences to evaluate the dominant fictions of liberal modernity, to critique Argentina’s purportedly democratic culture, and to imagine alternative performances of everyday life in accordance with their realities. Through a fresh look at the relationship among politics, economics, popular culture, and performance in Argentina’s modernization period, the book uncovers largely overlooked articulations of popular-class identities and desires for greater inclusion that would drive social and political struggles to this day. ** Review “Victoria Lynn Garrett’s book seeks to complicate the relationship between the workings of power and popular culture by re-examining both the textual and performative dimensions of Argentine popular theater, and its capacity (at times transgressive) to (re)constitute civil society.” (Ana C. Cara, Professor of Hispanic Studies, Oberlin College, USA) “Garrett expertly combines perspectives on theater, history, and the masses in a way that has not been done before, to advance a nuanced analysis of the national transformation that took place in Argentina between 1880 and 1930. She excels in identifying the unique potential of plays written during this period to effect change, influence collective attitudes, and consolidate solidarity across class, social, and ethnic boundaries while at the same time recognizing the limitations of this potential.” (Brenda Werth, Associate Professor and Department Chair, World Languages and Cultures, American University, USA) “As Angel Rama once noticed, the performance of popular culture in early twentieth century Argentina implied a dazzling spectacle of bodies and identities effortlessly traversing the realms of theater, urban experiences, a passion for narratives, political mobilization, and everyday life. This poignant development of a popular culture able to build its own tools for a critical relationship with modernity constitutes one of cultural phenomena most worth studying in modern Latin America. Victoria Garrett’s book accomplishes the rare feat of recapitulating the milestones of this cultural development while bringing its problems, actors and main-articulations under the lenses of the most up-to-date and cutting scholarship. This compelling scholarship, wherein Donna Guy’s Sex and Danger in Buenos Aires meets Angel Rama’s Los gauchipolíticos rioplantenses, not only illuminates one of the most interesting periods in Latin American history, but could also serve as a model for the study of how culture interacts with all spheres of contemporary life.” (Horacio Legrás, Associate Professor, Spanish and Portuguese, University of California, Irvine, USA) About the Author Victoria Lynn Garrett is Visiting Assistant Professor of Spanish at the College of Charleston, USA, where she specializes in Performance and Visual Studies, primarily in Argentina and Mexico. She and Pablo García Loaeza are co-authors of The Improbable Conquest: Letters from the Río de la Plata, 1537-1556 . Her work has appeared in Arizona Journal of Hispanic Cultural Studies , Hispania , Romance Quarterly , and other edited volumes. The Thames : A Photographic Journey From Source to Sea Pratt, Derek Bloomsbury Publishing;Thomas Reed Publications, London, 2017
The Thames is unique, emerging as a small stream in idyllic countryside and growing into the country's largest river, passing through some of the world's most iconic urban environments. Linking London to the countryside and the sea, the Thames is the heart of the capital and its waters the lifeblood of England. This beautiful book celebrates the entire river from source to sea, and with wonderful photography and quirky text follows it on a voyage through Britain's history. London has so often been the beginning and the end of the Thames story, and whilst it forms a major part, this book gives an altogether more complete and unexpected view of one of the most remarkable and well-loved rivers in the world. We see the famous views and also learn lesser-known facts, such as Dick Turpin's secret hideaway (complete with an underground stable for Black Bess), the home of the notorious Chancellor Sir Francis Dashwood (the only Chancellor to have delivered his budget speech drunk) and the scene of the Monty Python fish-slapping dance. First published in 2007, this gorgeous coffee table book has been updated for its second edition with new text and photography (including the Jubilee pageant), and continues to be the perfect gift for anyone living near, visiting or enjoying this magnificent river, with its visual variety, hidden secrets and fascinating history.

The Constant Princess (The Plantagenet and Tudor Novels Book 4) Gregory, Philippa Beyond Words/Atria Books, The Plantagenet and Tudor Novels, 6, New York, 2005
"I am Catalina, Princess of Spain, daughter of the two greatest monarchs the world has ever known...and I will be Queen of England." Thus, bestselling author Philippa Gregory introduces one of her most unforgettable heroines: Katherine of Aragon. Gregory's latest (after Earthly Joys ) compellingly dramatizes how Catalina uses her faith, her cunning and her utter belief in destiny to reclaim her rightful title. Copyright Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Review "Philippa Gregory is a mesmerizing storyteller." -- The Sunday Telegraph (UK) "When it comes to writers of historical fiction, Philippa Gregory is in the very top league." -- Daily Mail (UK)

Son of Heaven David Wingrove Corvus, Chung Kuo Recasting 1, 2011;2009
The year is 2085, two decades after the great economic collapse that destroyed Western civilization. With its power broken and its cities ruined, life in the West continues in scattered communities. In rural Dorset Jake Reed lives with his 14-year-old son and memories of the great collapse. Back in '43, Jake was a rich, young futures broker, immersed in the datascape of the world's financial markets. He saw what was coming - and who was behind it. Forewarned, he was one of the few to escape the fall. For 22 years he has lived in fear of the future, and finally it is coming - quite literally - across the plain towards him. Chinese airships are in the skies and a strange, glacial structure has begun to dominate the horizon. Jake finds himself forcibly incorporated into the ever-expanding 'World of Levels' a global city of some 34 billion souls, where social status is reflected by how far above the ground you live. Here, under the rule of the mighty Tsao Ch'un, a resurgent China is seeking to abolish the past and bring about world peace through rigidly enforced order. But a civil war looms, and Jake will find himself at the heart of the struggle for the future.Review'Imagine a collaboration between James Clavell and Frank Herbert and the result might be something very much like Chung Kuo... smart, involving, entertaining' San Francisco Chronicle About the AuthorDavid Wingrove is the Hugo Award-winning co-author (with Brian Aldiss) of Trillion Year Spree: The History of Science Fiction. He is also the co-author of the first three MYST books - novelizations of one of the world's bestselling computer games. He lives in north London with his wife and four daughters.

House of lies : how management consultants steal your watch and then tell you the time : a true story Kihn, Martin Grand Central Publishing, New York, New York State, 2009
In the bestselling tradition of Liar's Poker comes a devastatingly accurate and darkly hilarious behind-the-scenes look at the wonderful world of management consulting. Once upon a time in Corporate America there was a group of men and women who were paid huge fees to tell organizations what they were doing wrong and how to improve themselves. These men and women promised everything and delivered nothing, said they were experts when they were not, sometimes ruined careers, and at best, only wasted time, energy, and huge sums of money. They called themselves Management Consultants…. Welcome to the world of Martin Kihn, a former standup comic and Emmy® Award-nominated television writer who decided to “go straight” and earn his MBA at a prestigious Ivy League university. In HOUSE OF LIES, he brazenly chronicles his first two years as a newly-minted management consultant: featuring his struggles with erroneous advice, absurd arrogance, and bloody power struggles. Hey, it’s all in a day’s work— and it pays really well!

Mortal prey (P #13) Sandford, John, 1944 Feb. 23- New York : G.P. Putnam's Sons, Prey Series, New York, New York State, 2002
Years ago, Lucas Davenport almost died at the hands of Clara Rinker, a pleasant, soft-spoken, low-key Southerner, and the best hitwoman in the business. Now retired and living in Mexico, she nearly dies herself when a sniper kills her boyfriend, the son of a local druglord, and while the boy's father vows vengeance, Rinker knows something he doesn't: The boy wasn't the target-she was-and now she is going to have to disappear to find the killer herself. The FBI and DEA draft Davenport to help track her down, and with his fiancie deep in wedding preparations, he's really just as happy to go-but he has no idea what he's getting into. For Rinker is as unpredictable as ever, and between her, her old bosses in the St. Louis mob, the Mexican druglord, and the combined, sometimes warring, forces of U.S. law enforcement, this is one case that will get more dangerous as it goes along. And when the crossfire comes, anyone standing in the middle won't stand a chance....Filled with the rich characterization and exceptional drama that are his hallmarks, Mortal Prey proves that John Sandford just keeps getting better.

Snake Oil and Other Preoccupations Diamond, John Random House;Vintage Digital, London, New York State, 2009
At the time of his death from cancer on 1 March 2001, journalist and broadcaster John Diamond had completed six chapters of what was to be "an uncomplimentary look at the world of complementary medicine". These chapters, based on his own experience and on researched fact, which were emailed each week to his editors at Random House, are both personal and poignant, hard hitting and controversial, tackling the issues raised by alternative medicine with total candour and his usual wit. The second half of this book features some of the best of Diamond's writing, including a selection of emails to colleagues and friends, articles from "The Times" and the "Jewish Chronicle" and other publications, together with excerpts from his final notebook. For seven years he wrote an immensely popular weekly column in "The Times" which, following his diagnosis with cancer, was given over to following the progress of the disease. As well as gaining him a Columnist of the Year award, it resulted in an avalanche of mail from thousands of his readers.

Performing Everyday Life in Argentine Popular Theater, 1890--1934 Victoria Lynn Garrett Springer International Publishing;Palgrave Macmillan, New Directions in Latino American Cultures, 1st ed., 2018
This book examines the prolific and widely-attended popular theater boom of the __género chico criollo__ in the context of Argentina’s modernization.

Mortal Prey (Lucas Davenport, No. 13) John Sandford, John Sandford Penguin Publishing Group, Penguin Random House LLC, [N.p.], 2002
Amazon.com ReviewLucas Davenport's boss is about to lose her job as chief of police, his fiancée is distracted with wedding plans, and his house-remodeling project is at a standstill. So when the FBI and DEA draft the Minneapolis cop to head off hit woman Clara Rinker's bloody murder spree, he's glad to oblige. The lady killer and the killer lady have tangled before in Sandford's Prey series, and their personal history seasons this fast-paced story of mayhem, murder, and revenge. After Rinker barely survives an assassination attempt that destroys her unborn baby and kills her lover, the son of a Mexican drug lord, she sets out to destroy the mobsters who ordered the hit, a journey that brings her into Davenport's sights again and also puts him back in action alongside a woman agent with whom he was once involved. But it's the grudging respect and even affection Sandford hints at between Rinker and Lucas that takes this crisp, confident thriller beyond the limitations of the genre and makes the characters flesh-and-blood human beings. A standout in a terrific series! --Jane AdamsFrom Publishers WeeklyIt's the little things about Lucas Davenport that make him such a kick to follow his ruminations about why a public bus smells like urine, his fear that a cell phone won't work in the bathroom "with all the tile." Davenport is, of course, a marvelous if unorthodox cop from Minneapolis, starring here in his 13th Prey offering, which finds creator Sandford operating at top efficiency and in high style. Clara Rinker, the hit woman extraordinaire who slipped out of Davenport's grasp in 1999's Certain Prey, is now back on the prowl, looking for revenge against old enemies from Kansas City who killed her fiance and shot her in the gut. The bullet spared her life, but not that of her baby. The FBI, knowing she's headed to Missouri, assembles a huge team of shirt-and-tie, laptop-carrying agents, but also taps Davenport to make the trip. Sure enough, Rinker starts knocking off old business partners in creative ways, making the tech-minded FBI look foolish. It's only Davenport and his feet-on-the-street savvy that finally rope Rinker into a furious pursuit and showdown. Sandford's eye for the tell-all character quirk remains finely tuned, as does his deadpan humor, rivaled by few in the crime-drama ranks. Longtime fans should take note that changes are ahead for Davenport. He's marrying his sweetie, Dr. Weather Karkinnen, and they're having a kid. He's also about to leave the city police force, following his boss, Rose Marie Roux, to a job with the state police. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.
