Moral Panics, the Media and the Law in Early Modern England edited by David Lemmings, Claire Walker Palgrave Macmillan Limited, New York, New York State, 2010
This book explores and exemplifies some of the subtler links between opinion, governance and law in early modern England by investigating moral panics. Modern media-driven 'law and order' panics may have originated in eighteenth-century England, with the development of the press and government sensibility to opinion, but there were earlier panics about witchcraft and popery. Essays by an experienced team of scholars discuss broadly episodes of moral panic before and after 1689, and consider their implications for changes in governance. Review 'This wide-ranging yet thematically cohesive collection succeeds not only in showcasing the talents of some of the leading historians of early modern England, but in raising fascinating questions about the relationship between the law, the press and elite and popular opinion and mentalities.' - English Historical Review 'There is a great deal to admire in this volume, which brings together a particulalry accomplished and distinguished set of contributors, and has much to say about the complex and shifting relations between authority, information and opinion.' - Peter Marshall, History About the Author DAVID LEMMINGS is Head of the School of History and Politics at the University of Adelaide, Australia. He is the author of Gentlemen and Barristers: the Inns of Court and the English Bar, 1680-1730 (Oxford, OUP, 1990), and Professors of the Law: Barristers and English Culture in the Eighteenth Century (Oxford, OUP, 2000), and editor of The British and their Laws in the Eighteenth Century (Woodbridge: Boydell Press, 2005). CLAIRE WALKER is Lecturer in History at the University of Adelaide, Australia. Her published research has focussed on religious women and the politics of recusancy in early modern England. She is the author of Gender and Politics in Early Modern Europe: English Nuns in France and the Low Countries (Basingstoke: Palgrave-Macmillan, 2003).

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/The Devil and Sherlock Holmes - David Grann.epub
The devil and Sherlock Holmes : tales of murder, madness, and obsession David Grann; OverDrive, Inc Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group, 2011
Features “Trial by Fire,” the basis for the true crime major motion picture starring Jack O’Connell, Laura Dern, Emily Meade and Jeff Perry From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Killers of the Flower Moon comes this “gripping” ( The Miami Herald ) and “hilarious” ( EW ) collection of real-life mysteries about people whose obsessions propel them into unfathomable and often deadly circumstances. Whether David Grann is investigating a mysterious murder, tracking a chameleon-like con artist, or hunting an elusive giant squid, he has proven to be one of the most gifted reporters and storytellers of his generation. In The Devil and Sherlock Holmes , Grann takes the reader around the world, revealing a gallery of rogues and heroes with their own particular fixations who show that truth is indeed stranger than fiction. ** Amazon.com Review Amazon Exclusive: A Q&A with David Grann We had the opportunity to chat with David Grann about his bestselling debut, The Lost City of Z , and his second book of nonfiction, * The Devil and Sherlock Holmes: Tales of Murder, Madness, and Obsession*. Read on to find out what David thinks about the "infinitely strange" business of writing nonfiction. Amazon.com: Have you stayed in touch with any of the individuals you wrote about in The Devil and Sherlock Holmes? David Grann: In the course of researching the book, I got to know an array of astonishing characters. They include a marine biologist named Steve O’Shea who was trying to be the first person to ever to capture a giant squid and grow it in captivity; sandhogs digging an intricate maze of tunnels hundreds of feet beneath the streets of New York City; a Polish detective investigating whether an author planted clues to an actual murder in his postmodern novel; a fireman who suffered amnesia on 9/11 and is trying to piece together what happened to him on that tragic day; a baseball icon; cold killers; an imposter; and a school teacher, Elizabeth Gilbert, who attempted to prove that a man about to be executed for a deadly fire was really innocent. One of the strange things about reporting is that you spend a lot of time with someone and then resume your separate lives. But I occasionally hear from several of the characters in the stories. Gilbert, who had been paralyzed from the neck down in a car accident, recently called to tell me that after more than five years of rehabilitation she had begun to take steps with the aid of a walker. "I made it eighty yards," she said. "Almost a football field." Amazon.com: Given the opportunity, are there any stories you would like to revisit in the future? David Grann: Most of the pieces hopefully capture the essence of a story and don’t need elaboration. But as I learned from the strange and unexpected twists in these true tales, there is always a possibility that something new and startling may occur that would draw me back in. Amazon.com: As a journalist, how does the experience of writing essays differ from writing a longer work like The Lost City of Z ? David Grann: It’s very different. With a book, you can follow many different characters and paths. With essays, you have to keep the lens tightly focused. I really believe that some stories need to be told in longer narrative form, and others, like the dozen in The Devil and Sherlock Holmes , work ideally as shorter pieces. Amazon.com: Much of your writing revolves around individuals with unusually strong obsessions. The people you write about have focused their lives on everything from searching for giant squid to disbanding the most powerful gang in the U.S. prison system. Are there any characteristics that these individuals share? David Grann: Yes, as you mention, many of the characters are compelled by an obsession, even if the object of their obsession is very different. The other thing that many of them share is a curiosity and a hunger to explain, like Sherlock Holmes, the world around them--whether it be the unexplored sea, an underground empire, a secret prison gang, or a mysterious murder. Amazon.com: Many of these stories are rooted in ambiguous circumstances. Did your initial impressions change during the course of researching these people and events? David Grann: Definitely. When I began investigating these stories, I knew almost nothing about them. Many originated from little more than a tantalizing hint: a tip from a friend, a reference buried in a news brief. And so I hope that I take the reader on the same kind of journey that I experienced--a journey that often leads to conclusions that I never imagined. Amazon.com: Many of the stories in The Devil and Sherlock Holmes have a "stranger-than-fiction" quality to them. Have you ever considered trying your hand at fiction, or is the real world strange enough for you? David Grann: When I first started out as a writer, I had aspirations of becoming a novelist, but I could never invent compelling enough characters or plots. What’s wonderful about nonfiction is I get to meet these incredible characters--stick up men, sandhogs, prison escape artists, imposters, squid hunters, mobsters, FBI agents--and they allow me to spend time with them and document their private thoughts. If these dozen stories in the collection taught me anything, it is that life, to borrow a phrase from Sherlock Holmes, "is infinitely stranger than anything which the mind of man could invent." (Photo © Matt Richman) From Booklist The catchy title is misleading because this collection of 12 previously published articles by New Yorker staff writer Grann (who also wrote The Lost City of Z, 2009) has only one story that has anything to do with Holmes. Readers expecting true crime may also be disappointed because Grann’s work here ranges from several actual crime cases through articles that have only a nod toward mystery, as in “Life is Strange.” However, Grann’s in-depth reporting and vivid writing make this worthwhile reading for lovers of good journalism. The Holmes story, “Mysterious Circumstances,” traces the fate of a foremost Holmes scholar, about to bid on a lost archive of Arthur Conan Doyle’s, found garroted to death, surrounded by Sherlock Holmes mysteries. Another story, “The Chameleon,” examines a master imposter’s life. Perhaps the most gripping is “Which Way Did He Run?” in which the only firefighter of Engine Company 40 to survive the World Trade Center bombing, an amnesia victim, tries to piece together whether he acted as a hero or as a coward. --Connie Fletcher

Riots Not Diets!: Sex, Fat Studies and DIY Activism Helen Hester & Caroline Walters Theory, 2015
Fat studies, which has roots in fat activism, emerges as a response to a contemporary cultural landscape that is openly hostile towards fat people and their perceived social and aesthetic transgressions. This book builds on a deep admiration for this discipline and examines the relationship between fat, sex and sexuality. It follows in the wake of key texts – including The Fat Studies Reader (eds. Rothblum and Solovay, 2009), Deborah Lupton’s Fat (2012), and the academic journal Fat Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Body Weight and Society – which have broken new ground in the debates around fat embodiment. Their insights encompass issues such as health and the medicalization of ‘body mass’, cultural geographies of weight and size, and fatness and social justice. The discipline has been ahead of the curve, too, in understanding how intersecting forms of oppression impact embodiment. It has consistently demonstrated a commitment to better understanding the ways in which factors such as class, gender, race, age, ability, ethnicity, and sexuality can inform one another and shape the lived realities of fat people. Fat Sex: New Directions in Theory and Activism owes a debt to this activism infused scholarship, and seeks to draw on the strengths of the tradition in order to make a contribution to the field.

Hollywood Madonna: Loretta Young (Hollywood Legends Series) Dick, Bernard F. University Press of Mississippi ; Roundhouse [distributor, University Press of Mississippi, Jackson, 2011

Loretta Young (1913-2000) was an Academy Award-winning actress known for devout Catholicism and her performances in The Farmer's Daughter, The Bishop's Wife, and Come to the Stable, and for her long-running and tremendously popular television series. But that was not the whole story.

Hollywood Madonna explores the full saga of Loretta Young's professional and personal life. She made her film debut at age four, became a star at fifteen, and many awards and accolades later, made her final television movie at age seventy-six. This biography withholds none of the details of her affair with Clark Gable and the daughter that powerful love produced. Bernard F. Dick places Young's affair in the proper context of the time and the choices available to women in 1935, especially a noted Catholic like Young, whose career would have been in ruins if the public knew of her tryst. With the birth of a daughter, who would have been branded a love child, Loretta Young reached the crossroads of disclosure and deception, choosing the latter path. That choice resulted in an illustrious career for her and a tortured childhood for her daughter.

Strange narrators in contemporary fiction : explorations in readers' engagement with characters Marco Caracciolo University of Nebraska Press, Frontiers of narrative, Lincoln, NE, 2016
A storyteller's craft can often be judged by how convincingly the narrative captures the identity and personality of its characters. In this book, the characters who take center stage are "strange" first-person narrators: they are fascinating because of how they are at odds with what the reader would wish or expect to hear--while remaining reassuringly familiar in voice, interactions, and conversations. Combining literary analysis with research in cognitive and social psychology, Marco Caracciolo focuses on readers' encounters with the "strange" narrators of ten contemporary novels, including Bret Easton Ellis's American Psycho, Haruki Murakami's Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, and Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Caracciolo explores readers' responses to narrators who suffer from neurocognitive or developmental disorders, who are mentally disturbed due to multiple personality disorder or psychopathy, whose consciousness is split between two parallel dimensions or is disembodied, who are animals, or who lose their sanity. A foray into current work on reception, reader-response, cognitive literary study, and narratology, Strange Narrators in Contemporary Fiction illustrates why any encounter with a fictional text is a complex negotiation of interlaced feelings, thoughts, experiences, and interpretations.

The Sixty-Five Years of Washington Juan José Saer; Steve Dolph Open Letter, Lightning Source (Tier 4), [N.p.], 2014
"With meticulous prose, rendered by Dolph's translation into propulsive English, Saer's The Sixty-Five Years of Washington captures the wilderness of human experience in all its variety."— New York Times It's October 1960, say, or 1961, in a seaside Argentinian city named Santa Fe, and The Mathematician—wealthy, elegant, educated, dressed from head to toe in white—is just back from a grand tour of Europe. He's on his way to drop off a press release about the trip to the papers when he runs into Ángel Leto, a relative newcomer to Santa Fe who does some accounting, but who this morning has decided to wander the town rather than go to work. One day soon, The Mathematician will disappear into exile after his wife's assassination, and Leto will vanish into the guerrilla underground, clutching his suicide pill like a talisman. But for now, they settle into a long conversation about the events of Washington Noriega's sixty-fifth birthday—a party neither of them attended. Saer's The Sixty-Five Years of Washington is simultaneously a brilliant comedy about memory, narrative, time, and death and a moving narrative about the lost generations of an Argentina that was perpetually on the verge of collapse. Juan José Saer was the leading Argentinian writer of the post-Borges generation. The author of numerous novels and short-story collections (including Scars and La Grande ), Saer was awarded Spain's prestigious Nadal Prize in 1987 for The Event. Steve Dolph is the founder of Calque , a journal of literature in translation. His translation of Juan José Saer's Scars was a finalist for the 2012 Best Translated Book Award.

The Scientist in the Early Roman Empire Richard Carrier Independent Publishers Group (Chicago Review Press), Durham, North Carolina, 2017
In this extensive sequel to Science Education in the Early Roman Empire , Dr. Richard Carrier explores the social history of scientists in the Roman era. Was science in decline or experiencing a revival under the Romans? What was an ancient scientist thought to be and do? Who were they, and who funded their research? And how did pagans differ from their Christian peers in their views toward science and scientists? Some have claimed Christianity valued them more than their pagan forebears. In fact the reverse is the case. And this difference in values had a catastrophic effect on the future of humanity. The Romans may have been just a century or two away from experiencing a scientific revolution. But once in power, Christianity kept that progress on hold for a thousand years—while forgetting most of what the pagans had achieved and discovered, from an empirical anatomy, physiology, and brain science to an experimental physics of water, gravity, and air. Thoroughly referenced and painstakingly researched, this volume is a must for anyone who wants to learn how far we once got, and why we took so long to get to where we are today. ** Review "Rigorous depth of research is Carrier's trademark, employed here to great effect. He presents a wealth of evidence and a spectacular look into the surprising variety and richness of science and technology in Roman times. Achievements as varied as astronomical computers like the Antikythera Device, the beginnings of surgical anesthetics and antiseptics, robotic theater performances and cuckoo clocks, hand crossbows and automatic weapons, and so much more. Carrier illuminates a world on the edge of scientific revolution, but ultimately denied by fate. He shows the triumph of Christianity brought with it open hostility to the scientific values necessary for progress to continue, leading us into a dark millennium, ending only when Western civilization could weaken Church power enough to defy it, and return to the values of the pagans of yore." —David Fitzgerald, author, The Mormons and Jesus: Mything in Action About the Author Richard Carrier , PhD, is a philosopher and historian of antiquity, specializing in contemporary philosophy of naturalism and Greco-Roman philosophy, science, and religion, including the origins of Christianity. He blogs regularly and lectures for community groups worldwide. He is the author of numerous books, including Sense and Goodness without God: A Defense of Metaphysical Naturalism and On the Historicity of Jesus . Truth : the press, the president, and the privilege of power Mary Mapes St. Martin's Publishing Group, New York, 2015

Mary Mapes's Truth (previously published as Truth & Duty) was made into the 2015 film Truth, starring Cate Blanchett, Robert Redford, Topher Grace and Elizabeth Moss.

A riveting play-by-play of a reporter getting and defending a story that recalls All the President's Men, Truth puts readers in the center of the "60 Minutes II" story on George W. Bush's shirking of his National Guard duty. The firestorm that followed that broadcast--a conflagration that was carefully sparked by the right and fanned by bloggers--trashed Mapes' well-respected twenty-five year producing career, caused newsman Dan Rather to resign from his anchor chair early and led to an unprecedented "internal inquiry" into the story...chaired by former Reagan attorney general Richard Thornburgh.

Truth examines Bush's political roots as governor of Texas, delves into what is known about his National Guard duty-or lack of service-and sheds light on the solidity of the documents that backed up the National Guard story, even including images of the actual documents in an appendix to the book. It is peopled with a colorful cast of characters-from Karl Rove to Sumner Redstone-and moves from small-town Texas to Black Rock-CBS corporate headquarters-in New York City.

Truth connects the dots between a corporation under fire from the federal government and the decision about what kinds of stories a news network may cover. It draws a line from reporting in the trenches to the gutting of the great American tradition of a independent media and asks whether it's possible to break important stories on a powerful sitting president.

Besieged : An Encyclopedia of Great Sieges From Ancient Times to the Present Paul K. Davis ABC-CLIO; Bloomsbury, Bloomsbury USA, Santa Barbara, Calif, 2001
Besieged examines the most important sieges in historythe actions and motivations of attackers and defenders along with conditions inside and outside the city walls. From Joshua's assault on Jericho in the 15th century B.C. to the Russian attack on the Chechen capital of Grozny at the end of the 20th century, siege warfare has been a recurring theme in the human story. Again and again, engineers have built supposedly impregnable fortifications, only to see them overrun by an ingenious enemy. In Besieged , military historian Paul F. Davis analyzes the most crucial sieges in world history, such as the siege of Leningrad, which weakened the Nazi forces in World War II, and that of the Alamo, which culminated in independence for Texas. He also describes important sieges unfamiliar to most readers, such as that of Arcot, where a British victory halted the French takeover of southern India. In engaging, accessible language, Davis tracks the invention of new technologies, analyzes innovative tactics, and tells the human story of conditions both inside and outside the city walls.

Gender and Representation in British Golden Age Crime Fiction: Women Writing Women Megan Hoffman Palgrave Macmillan UK : Imprint : Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, London, 2016
This book provides an original and compelling analysis of the ways in which British women’s golden age crime narratives negotiate the conflicting social and cultural forces that influenced depictions of gender in popular culture in the 1920s until the late 1940s. The book explores a wide variety of texts produced both by writers who have been the focus of a relatively large amount of critical attention, such as Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers and Margery Allingham, but also those who have received comparatively little, such as Christianna Brand, Ngaio Marsh, Gladys Mitchell, Josephine Tey and Patricia Wentworth. Through its original readings, this book explores the ambivalent nature of modes of femininity depicted in golden age crime fiction, and shows that seemingly conservative resolutions are often attempts to provide a ‘modern-yet-safe’ solution to the conflicts raised in the texts. ** Review “The 1920s-40s were a time of great change for woman, politically, socially and career wise, which Hoffman succinctly summarises at the start of her book. … I really enjoyed this book. Hoffman’s readings of texts were consistently detailed and engaging, helping me to look at familiar stories in a new light. I also liked her writing style (a crucial element in a literary criticism book), as she was enjoyable to read and informative … .” (crossexaminingcrime, crossexaminingcrime.wordpress.com, July, 2016) Historical & Comparative Language Arts & Disciplines 20th Century English; Irish; Scottish; Welsh European Literary Criticism General Modern Fiction Linguistics

American prisons : their past, present and future Musick, David; Gunsaulus-Musick, Kristine; Routledge; Routledge, an imprint of the Taylor & Francis Group, London ; New York, 2017
Imprisonment has become big business in the United States. Using a "history of ideas" approach, this book examines the cultural underpinnings of prisons in the United States and explores how shared ideas about imprisonment evolve into a complex, loosely connected nationwide system of prisons that keeps enough persons to populate a small nation behind bars, razor wire and electrified fences. Tracing both the history of the prison and the very idea of imprisonment in the United States, this book provides students with a critical overview of American prisons and considers their past, their present and directions for the future. Topics covered include: • a history of imprisonment in America from 1600 to the present day; • the twentieth-century prison building binge; • the relationship between U.S. prisons and the private sector; • a critical account of capital punishment; • less-visible prison minorities, including women, children and the elderly; and • sex, violence and disease in prison. This comprehensive book is essential reading for advanced courses on corrections and correctional management and offers a compelling and provocative analysis of the realities of American penal culture from past to present. It is perfect reading for students of criminal justice, corrections, penology and the sociology of punishment. **

Arabella's determination to find a rich husband is at the heart of this story and her character, though often maligned, is one of Trollope's most famous and vivid creations. Gargantua and Pantagruel Francois Rabelais,Sir Thomas Urquhart,Peter Antony Motteux Digireads.com Publishing, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 1), [Lawrence, KS], 2009
Review Collective title of five comic novels by Francois Rabelais, published between 1532 and 1564. The novels present the comic and satiric story of the giant Gargantua and his son Pantagruel. The first two novels were published under the anagrammatic pseudonym Alcofribas (Alcofrybas) Nasier. The first book, commonly called Pantagruel (1532), deals with some of the fantastic incidents of the early years of Pantagruel. While at the University of Paris he receives a letter from his father that is still considered an essential exposition of French Renaissance ideals. In Paris Pantagruel also meets the cunning rogue Panurge, who becomes his companion throughout the series. In Gargantua (1534), old-fashioned scholastic pedagogy is ridiculed and contrasted with the humanist ideal of King Francis I, whose efforts to reform the French church Rabelais supported. Le Tiers Livre (1546; "The Third Book") is Rabelais's most profound and erudite work. In it Pantagruel has become a sage; Panurge is self-absorbed and bedeviled, wondering if he should marry. He consults various prognosticators, allowing Rabelais to hold forth on sex, love, and marriage, and to satirize fortune tellers, judges, and poets. Panurge persuades Pantagruel and friends to join him on a voyage to the Oracle of the Holy Bottle in Cathay for an answer. This they do in Le Quart Livre (1552; "The Fourth Book"), which reflects the era's interest in exploration; the Pantagruelians encounter a series of islands that present opportunities for the author to satirize the religious and political forces wreaking havoc on 16th-century Christendom. In a fifth book, Le Cinquieme Livre (1564; of doubtful authenticity), the band arrives at the temple of the Holy Bottle, where the oracle answers Panurge with a single word: "Drink!" -- __ Product Description An elaborate parody written in the 16th century, "Gargantua and Pantagruel" is a comic blend of energetic realism and carnival fantasy. The two main characters are giants, a father and his son, who have numerous adventures. Many different types of people are satirized during their chivalric exploits, from lawyers to theologians, generals to monarchs, with humor that is often grotesque or obscene. Intertwined with this crude comedy, however, is the wisdom of Renaissance learning, which exposes countless examples of human foolishness. Divided into two volumes, one describes a sullied giant who grows into a grand knight and prince, and the other portrays his erudite son who himself becomes a Renaissance Socrates. Rabelais' work is full of freedom and laughter, as well as a certain understanding that will give readers a renewed worldview. Inside the Vatican of Pius XII : the memoir of an American diplomat during World War II Pope Pius XII;Tittmann, Harold H. The Doubleday Religious Publishing Group, 2010;2004
An invaluable contribution to the history of the Catholic Church during the Second World War, this is a richly detailed eyewitness account of the life and politics of the Vatican by an American who worked there from 1940 to 1944. The question of whether Pius XII and the Vatican must bear blame for failing to act decisively in response to Hitler's Final Solution is as hotly debated today as in the years directly following World War II. INSIDE THE VATICAN OF PIUS XII presents for the first time the observations of an American diplomat who spent four years inside the Vatican. This memoir of Harold H. Tittmann, Jr., describes his encounters with Pius XII and offers details that give a full picture of daily life in the Vatican. Writing of his own activities as a diplomat, Tittmann chronicles his role in assisting and hiding escaped prisoners of war and his experiences navigating the tensions with the representatives of enemy states, with whom he lived side by side. Deftly conveying the beauty and solemnity of events that took place in the dramatic settings of St. Peter's, the Sistine Chapel, and the Pope's private chapel, Tittmann's work will be valued by historians and students of history for generations to come.

Workers' Movements and Strikes in the Twenty-First Century: A Global Perspective (Transforming Capitalism) Jörg Nowak; Madhumita Dutta; Peter Birke Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Incorporated, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, London, 2018
While workers movements have been largely phased out and considered out-dated in most parts of the world during the 1990s, the 21st century has seen a surge in new and unprecedented forms of strikes and workers organisations. The collection of essays in this book, spanning countries across global South and North, provides an account of strikes and working class resistance in the 21st century. Through original case studies, the book looks at the various shades of workers’ movements, analysing different forms of popular organisation as responses to new social and economic conditions, such as restructuring of work and new areas of investment. ** Review How to analyse the wave of strikes occurring around the world in the early 21st century? What are their causes, forms, and results – and what do they reveal about specific socioeconomic constellations? Is there potential for solidarity among workers in different world regions, based, for instance, on similar policies of informalisation? This volume is a perfect starting point for discussion. (Nicole Mayer-Ahuja, Professor of Sociology, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen) This book will certainly be a global reference in the studies on the new trends of workers' resistance struggles in the face of current forms of capitalist accumulation. It offers a fantastic panorama of strikes and other forms of workers fighting in a wide range of countries in all regions of the world. It has the merit of highlighting the recent phenomenon of a world wide resurgence of workers' strikes. (Roberto Véras de Oliveira, Associate Professor, Federal University of Paraíba) This book is a powerful reminder of the continuing widespread resistance to capitalism despite the global economic crisis. Bringing together a large amount of studies from Asia, the Americas, Africa and Europe, including less well-researched countries such as Indonesia and Burkina Faso, the authors emphasise the new dynamics of class struggle across the globe. A must-read for everyone interested in resisting exploitation and transforming capitalism! (Andreas Bieler, Professor of Political Economy, University of Nottingham) This edited volume on labour strikes covering working class struggles in Asia, Africa and Latin America is a pioneering attempt in the area of labour studies. Re-politicizing labour strikes on a global scale is a timely project that this volume strives to achieve. Readers of labour studies, social movements and social change should definitely pay attention to it. (Pun Ngai, Department of Sociology, The University of Hong Kong) About the Author Madhumita Dutta is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at the Ohio State University, USA. Jörg Nowak is a Marie Curie Researcher at the School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Nottingham, UK. **

Hollywood Madonna: Loretta Young (Hollywood Legends Series) Young, Loretta; Dick, Bernard F.; Young, Loretta University Press of Mississippi ; Roundhouse [distributor, Hollywood legends series, Hollywood legends series, Jackson, Mississippi, 2011
Loretta Young (1913-2000) was an Academy Award-winning actress known for devout Catholicism and her performances in __The Farmer's Daughter__, __The Bishop's Wife__, and __Come to the Stable__, and for her long-running and tremendously popular television series. But that was not the whole story. __Hollywood Madonna__ explores the full saga of Loretta Young's professional and personal life.

Artes Apodemicae And Early Modern Travel Culture, 1550-1700 (intersections: Interdisciplinary Studies In Early Modern Culture) Karl A. E Enenkel; Johannes Leenderd de Jong; E. J. Brill (Lejda) Brill Academic Pub, Brill Academic Publishers, Leiden, 2019
This volume explores the early modern manuals on travelling ( Artes apodemicae ), a new genre of advice literature that originated in the sixteenth century, when it became communis opinio among intellectuals that travelling was an important means of acquiring knowledge and experience, and that an extended tour abroad was a vital, if not indispensable part of humanist, academic and political education. In this volume, the formation of this new genre, between 1550 and 1700, is studied in its historical, social and cultural context. Furthermore, the volume examines the impact of this new genre on the acquisition and collection of knowledge in the early modern period, empirical or otherwise. Being Digital Citizens Engin Fahri Isin; Evelyn Ruppert Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Incorporated, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, London, UK, 2015
From the rise of cyberbullying and hactivism to the issues surrounding digital privacy rights and freedom of speech, the Internet is changing the ways in which we govern and are governed as citizens. This book examines how citizens encounter and perform new sorts of rights, duties, opportunities and challenges through the Internet. By disrupting prevailing understandings of citizenship and cyberspace, the authors highlight the dynamic relationship between these two concepts. Rather than assuming that these are static or established "facts" of politics and society, the book shows how the challenges and opportunities presented by the Internet inevitably impact upon the action and understanding of political agency. In doing so, it investigates how we conduct ourselves in cyberspace through digital acts. This book provides a new theoretical understanding of what it means to be a citizen today for students and scholars across the social sciences.-- Provided by publisher

The Global Financial Crisis : Genesis, Policy Response and Road Ahead by Satyendra Nayak Springer India; Imprint: Springer; Springer, Springer Nature, New Delhi, 2013
This book takes a novel and holistic view of the global financial crisis and gives a comprehensive agenda for the reform of the global economy. It highlights why financial markets are more volatile than other markets and need better regulation. ** From the Back Cover The Financial Crisis, though originating in the US, is global and comparable with the Great Depression of the 1930s. The book takes both micro and macro view of the crisis. It examines the evolution of the global monetary system and looks at the crisis from a systemic angle. It examines the institutional changes in American capitalism and market mechanisms. The dynamics of the market and its cyclical characters are discussed. It examines the structural changes in the US economy. The role of globalization and international funds flow, their changing character and the growing interdependence among nations have been examined. At the micro level, the book discusses the subprime market and the gaps in the system that created the crisis. It deals with the supervisory structure and growing influence of the derivatives market and the synthetic products that are threatening the financial system. It also analyzes the fundamental changes in the global trading and payments patterns, which are influencing the US balance of payments and the US dollar. The secular changes in the structure of the US economy are impacting the global economy. The work deals with the measures taken to resolve the crisis both in the US and on a global scale. The reforms necessary to avoid the recurrence of the crisis are outlined. The study aims to underline these factors and draw a perspective for the US dollar. It is also proposed to draw a scenario for a more efficient and equitable global monetary system with a role for the US dollar along with a new vehicle for international payments and finance. This would also include the reform of the global economic system and the IMF. The special feature of the book is that it takes a holistic view of the problem. The systemic and macro issues are discussed in addition to its microanalysis. About the Author Dr. Satyendra S. Nayak is an independent financial advisor and consultant. Gender and Representation in British Golden Age Crime Fiction: Women Writing Women Megan Hoffman (auth.) Palgrave Macmillan UK : Imprint : Palgrave Macmillan, Crime Files, 1st ed. 2016, London, 2016
I also liked her writing style (a crucial element in a literary criticism book), as she was enjoyable to read and informative … .” (crossexaminingcrime, crossexaminingcrime.wordpress.com, July, 2016) Historical & Comparative Language Arts & Disciplines 20th Century English; Irish; Scottish; Welsh European Literary Criticism General Modern Fiction Linguistics Dedication 6 Acknowledgements 8 Contents 10 Chapter 1: Introduction 12 Chapter 2: Change and Anxiety: Historical Context 26 Women’s Education 29 Careers and the Workplace 31 Marriage and Motherhood 36 Birth Control 38 The Cult of Domesticity 40 Spinsters 42 Homosexuality 43 Chapter 3: ‘Everybody Needs an Outlet’: Nonconforming Women 49 Nonconforming Women as Detectives: Miss Climpson 51 Nonconforming Women as Detectives: Miss Silver 58 Nonconforming Women as Detectives: Miss Marple 62 Nonconforming Women as Detectives: Mrs Bradley 66 Nonconforming Women as Victims and Villains: Overture to Death and Murder is Easy 68 Strong Poison: The Vilified Victim 75 Chapter 4: A Joint Venture?: Love, Partnership and Marriage 82 ‘Treat'em rough?’: Courtship in Artists in Crime and Death in a White Tie 87 Partner, Interrupted: Representing Companionate Relationships in the Work of Margery Allingham and Dorothy L. Sayers 101 ‘Happily Ever Afterwards’: Agatha Christie’s Tommy and Tuppence 110 Chapter 5: Ladies of a Modern World: Education and Work 121 ‘In Her Own Place’: Successful Communities of Women in Gaudy Night and St Peter’s Finger 125 Quite Normal?: Stereotypes and Sexuality in Miss Pym Disposes and Laurels Are Poison 134 ‘A Most “Natural” Reaction’: Personal and Professional Conflict in The Fashion in Shrouds and Death in High Heels 147 Chapter 6: Sensational Bodies: Villains and Victims 165 ‘Not an Ordinary Murderess’: The Killer’s Body in Lord Edgware Dies, Unnatural Death, Dumb Witness and Peril at End House 167 ‘Erased from the Page’: The Victim’s Body in Speedy Death, The Body in the Library and Evil Under the Sun 180 Chapter 7: Conclusion 198 Bibliography 201 Index 209

Studies on the Abuse and Decline of Reason: Text and Documents (Volume 13) (The Collected Works of F. A. Hayek) Friedrich A. Hayek; Bruce Caldwell THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO PRESS, University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 2010
Studies on the Abuse and Decline of Reason is a series of fascinating essays on the study of social phenomena. How to best and most accurately study social interactions has long been debated intensely, and there are two main approaches: the positivists, who ignore intent and belief and draw on methods based in the sciences; and the nonpositivists, who argue that opinions and ideas drive action and are central to understanding social behavior. F. A. Hayek’s opposition to the positivists and their claims to scientific rigor and certainty in the study of human behavior is a running theme of this important book. Hayek argues that the vast number of elements whose interactions create social structures and institutions make it unlikely that social science can predict precise outcomes. Instead, he contends, we should strive to simply understand the principles by which phenomena are produced. For Hayek this modesty of aspirations went hand in hand with his concern over widespread enthusiasm for economic planning. As a result, these essays are relevant to ongoing debates within the social sciences and to discussion about the role government can and should play in the economy. **

Between Sword and Prayer: Warfare and Medieval Clergy in Cultural Perspective (Explorations in Medieval Culture) Radosław Kotecki; Jacek Maciejewski; John S. Ott Koninklijke Brill N.V., Brill Academic Publishers, Leiden, The Netherlands, 2018
Between Sword and Praye r is a broad-ranging anthology focused on the involvement of medieval clergy in warfare and a variety of related military activities. The essays address, on the one hand, the issue of clerical participation in combat, in organizing military campaigns, and in armed defense, and on the other, questions surrounding the political, ideological, or religious legitimization of clerical military aggression. These perspectives are further enriched by chapters dealing with the problem of the textual representation of clergy who actively participated in military affairs. The essays in this volume span Latin Christendom, encompassing geographically the four corners of medieval Europe: Western, East-Centra l, Northern Europe, and the Mediterranean. Contributors are Carlos de Ayala Martínez, Geneviève Bührer-Thierry, Chris Dennis, Pablo Dorronzoro Ramírez, Lawrence G. Composing capital : classical music in the neoliberal era Ritchey, Marianna The University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 2019
"The familiar old world of classical music, with its wealthy donors and ornate concert halls, is changing. The patronage of a wealthy few is being replaced by that of corporations, leading to new unions of classical music and contemporary capitalism. In Composing Capital, Marianna Ritchey lays bare the appropriation of classical music by the current neoliberal regime, arguing that artists, critics, and institutions have aligned themselves--and, by extension, classical music itself--with free-market ideology. More specifically, she demonstrates how classical music has lent its cachet to marketing schemes, tech firm-sponsored performances, and global corporate partnerships. As Ritchey shows, the neoliberalization of classical music has put music at the service of contemporary capitalism, blurring the line between creativity and entrepreneurship, and challenging us to imagine how a noncommodified musical practice might be possible in today's world."--Publisher's description

Secularism in Question: Jews and Judaism in Modern Times (Jewish Culture and Contexts) edited by Ari Joskowicz, Ethan B. Katz University of Pennsylvania Press, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 2), Philadelphia, 2015
For much of the twentieth century, most religious and secular Jewish thinkers believed that they were witnessing a steady, ongoing movement toward secularization. Toward the end of the century, however, as scholars and pundits began to speak of the global resurgence of religion, the normalization of secularism could no longer be considered inevitable. Recent decades have seen the strengthening of Orthodox movements in the United States and in Israel; religious Zionism has grown and radically changed since the 1960s, and new and vibrant nondenominational Jewish movements have emerged. Secularism in Question examines the ways these contemporary revivals of religion prompt a reconsideration of many issues concerning Jews and Judaism from the early modern era to the present. Bringing together scholars of history, religion, philosophy, and literature, this volume illustrates how the categories of "religious" and "secular" have frequently proven far more permeable than fixed. The contributors challenge the problematic assumptions about the development of secularism that emerge from Protestant European and American perspectives and demonstrate that global Jewish experiences necessitate a reappraisal of conventional narratives of secularism. Ultimately, Secularism in Question calls for rethinking the very terms that animate many of the most contentious debates in contemporary Jewish life and far beyond. Friendship (Meridian: Crossing Aesthetics) Maurice Blanchot; translated by Elizabeth Rottenberg, 1997 Stanford University Press, 1971
For the past half century, Maurice Blanchot has been an extraordinarily influential figure on the French literary and cultural scene. He is arguably the key figure after Sartre in exploring the relation between literature and philosophy. This collection of 29 critical essays and reviews on art, politics, literature, and philosophy documents the wide range of Blanchot's interests, from the enigmatic paintings in the Lascaux caves to the atomic era. Essays are devoted to works of fiction (Louis-Rene des Forets, Pierre Klossowski, Roger Laporte, Marguerite Duras), to autobiographies or testimonies (Michel Leiris, Robert Antelme, Andre Gorz, Franz Kafka), or to authors who are more than ever contemporary (Jean Paulhan, Albert Camus). Several essays focus on questions of Judaism, as expressed in the works of Edmond Jabes, Emmanuel Levinas, and Martin Buber. Among the other topics covered are Andre Malraux's "imaginary museum," the Pleiade Encyclopedia project of Raymond Queneau, paperback publishing, the work of Claude Levi-Strauss, Benjamin's "Task of the Translator," Marx and communism, writings on the Holocaust, and the difference between art and writing. The book concludes with an eloquent invocation to friendship on the occasion of the death of Georges Bataille.

Queen, Mother, and Stateswoman : Mariana of Austria and the Government of Spain Silvia Z. Mitchell The Pennsylvania State University Press, Pennsylvania State University Press, University Park, Pennsylvania, 2019
When Philip IV of Spain died in 1665, his heir, Carlos II, was three years old. In addition to this looming dynastic crisis, decades of enormous military commitments had left Spain a virtually bankrupt state with vulnerable frontiers and a depleted army. In Silvia Z. Mitchell’s revisionist account, Queen, Mother, and Stateswoman , Queen Regent Mariana of Austria emerges as a towering figure at court and on the international stage, while her key collaborators—the secretaries, ministers, and diplomats who have previously been ignored or undervalued—take their rightful place in history. Mitchell provides a nuanced account of Mariana of Austria’s ten-year regency (1665–75) of the global Spanish Empire and examines her subsequent role as queen mother. Drawing from previously unmined primary sources, including Council of State deliberations, diplomatic correspondence, Mariana’s and Carlos’s letters, royal household papers, manuscripts, and legal documents, Mitchell describes how, over the course of her regency, Mariana led the monarchy out of danger and helped redefine the military and diplomatic blocs of Europe in Spain’s favor. She follows Mariana’s exile from court and recounts how the dowager queen used her extensive connections and diplomatic experience to move the negotiations for her son’s marriage forward, effectively exploiting the process to regain her position. A new narrative of the Spanish Habsburg monarchy in the later seventeenth century, this volume advances our knowledge of women’s legitimate political entitlement in the early modern period. It will be welcomed by scholars and students of queenship, women’s studies, and early modern Spain. Review “An imaginative and wholly original account of a ruler who is regarded as the personification of Spain’s seventeenth-century decline as an imperial power. Mitchell revises the traditional view of Mariana as the hapless pawn of her confessors and male courtiers and shows her to be a fiercely independent woman capable of decisive action in domestic and foreign affairs as well as a ruler who successfully managed to defend the interests and reputation of Spain’s Habsburg monarchy. This book is a valuable contribution to the growing body of literature on early modern queenship.” —Richard L. Kagan, author of Clio and the Crown: The Politics of History in Medieval and Early Modern Spain “Mitchell mines court archives and state records to demonstrate that Mariana of Austria had clear and consistent diplomatic and military strategies as queen regent, and he establishes her as part of a long tradition of strong female leadership in early modern European courts. This work fills a significant gap in our understanding of the late seventeenth-century Spanish court and supports recent arguments in favor of Spanish resilience rather than decline under the last Habsburgs.” —Jodi Campbell, author of At the First Table: Food and Social Identity in Early Modern Spain “Silvia Mitchell’s work is an important revisionist study of the regency of Mariana of Austria, mother of the last Spanish Habsburg. Based upon wide-ranging and detailed research, it has considerable implications for a much more positive understanding than has prevailed hitherto not only of the last decades of Habsburg rule in Spain but also, more broadly, of female political agency in early modern Europe.” —Christopher Storrs, author of The Resilience of the Spanish Monarchy, 1665 – 1700 “Countering the common perception of Mariana de Austria as weak, too young to govern, and easily manipulated, Silvia Mitchell demonstrates that Mariana was a forceful, effective regent during the period of her son’s minority (1665-75). Grounded solidly in fresh archival research, Queen, Mother, and Stateswoman will advance the historical debate on Mariana, on seventeenth-century royal favorites, and on the court of Charles II of Spain.” —Magdalena Sánchez, author of The Empress, the Queen, and the Nun: Women and Power at the Court of Philip III of Spain About the Author Silvia Z. Mitchell is Assistant Professor of Early Modern European History at Purdue University.

The End of the World : Apocalypse and Its Aftermath in Western Culture Maria Manuel Lisboa Open Book Publishers, Open Book Publishers, Cambridge, UK, 2011
Our fear of the world ending, like our fear of the dark, is ancient, deep-seated and perennial. It crosses boundaries of space and time, recurs in all human communities and finds expression in every aspect of cultural production - from pre-historic cave paintings to high-tech computer games. This book examines historical and imaginary scenarios of Apocalypse, the depiction of its likely triggers, and imagined landscapes in the aftermath of global destruction. Its discussion moves effortlessly from classic novels including Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four and Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake, to blockbuster films such as Blade Runner, Armageddon and The Terminator. The author also takes into account religious doctrine, scientific research and the visual arts to create a penetrating, multi-disciplinary study that provides profound insight into one of Western culture’s darkest and most enduring preoccupations. This book is dedicated to our planet, with best wishes for many happy returns. In memory of my mother-in-law, Winifred Brick and my uncle, Ilídio Lisboa. This World is not Conclusion. A Species stands beyond—Invisible, as Music—But positive, as Sound—It beckons, and it baffles—Philosophy—don’t know—And through a Riddle, at the last—Sagacity, must go—To guess it, puzzles scholars—To gain it, Men have borne Contempt of Generations And Crucifixion […]. Zeppo's First Wife: New and Selected Poems (Phoenix Poets) Mazur, Gail University of Chicago Press, University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 2005
from Enormously Sad . . . Sad, so sad-compared to what? To your earlier more oblivious state? It never was oblivious enough- always those presentiments of sadness prickling the limbic. Now a voice says, Get outside yourself, go walk on the flats. The tide's gone out— but your little metal detector will detect little metallic coins of enormous sadness in the teeming wet sand, and then, the tide will come back, erasing, cleansing! And you, standing there in the salty scouring air- will you still be enormously sad, While the other world, outside your tiny purview, struck by iron, reels? World of intentional iron, pure savage organized iron of the world, it hasn't the time that you have for your puny enormous sadness. Widely acclaimed for expanding the stylistic boundaries of both the narrative and meditative lyric, Gail Mazur’s poetry crackles with verbal invention as she confronts the inevitable upheavals of a lived life. Zeppo’s First Wife, which includes excerpts from Mazur’s four previous books, as well as twenty-two new poems, is epitomized by the worldly longing of the title poem, with its searching poignancy and comic bravura. Mazur’s explorations of “this fallen world, this loony world” are deeply moving acts of empathy by a singular moral sensibility—evident from the earliest poem included here, the much-anthologized “Baseball,” a stunning bird’s-eye view of human foibles and passions. Clear-eyed, full of paradoxical griefs and appetites, her poems brave the most urgent subjects—from the fraught luscious Eden of the ballpark, to the fragility of our closest human ties, to the implications for America in a world where power and war are cataclysmic for the strong as well as the weak. from Enormously Sad . . . Bosnia in limbo : testimonies from the Drina River Borja Lasheras; Carlos Westendorp Y Cabeza Jessica Haunschild u. Christian Schön GbR. ibidem-Verlag, Stuttgart, 2018
To this day, almost all narratives on Bosnia focus on the 1990s, the war, and the labyrinth that Dayton’s institutional system represents. They also tend to be imbued with a perspective that often overdoes the ethnic and religious element. The truth is that, beyond the causes of war and its manifold tragedies, we actually know very little of its forgotten consequences, once the CNN effect is long gone. As importantly, we know very little of Bosnia today: a society shaped by the past, yes, but also exposed to shifting twenty-first-century dynamics. A society haunted not only by war tragedies but also by a long-standing and long overlooked social crisis. This revealing book thus tries to provide a somewhat different picture of Bosnia, twenty years after the war. Largely based on the author’s experience in the field, it is to some extent an account of rural Bosnia, in particular of the Drina River Valley, which bore the brunt of the ethnic cleansing in the 1990s. Yet, and starting off from that isolated region of open wounds, unfinished issues and a cast of characters that range from displaced persons and victims to committed women, the book aims to overall provide a portrait of modern Bosnia as such, while also looking critically at the workings of the international community and European diplomacy. The book, with its landscape of activists, Western diplomats, and inhabitants of an underground world in Sarajevo for LGBT and youths, shows a country of so-far failed Springs and leaders who go on with their bad governance. Meanwhile, the “Europe” towards which Bosnia theoretically moves drifts between a poor understanding of the country, a fear of conflict that acts as its Achilles’ heel, as well as lack of genuine interest, seems unable to really change things. This compelling book shows that Bosnia is still, in a way, a country in limbo. ** Russian & Former Soviet Union Political Science World TABLE OF CONTENTS 8 Acknowledgements 10 Prologue 12 INTRODUCTION 16 PART I IN THE DRINA VALLEY 22 The Road to Eastern Bosnia 24 River of Violence 27 Srbinje 32 The Office (Twin Peaks) 37 Life in Foča 40 The Foča of Zdravko Krsmanović 44 The Arrest of Mladić 46 The Hodžićs 51 PART II THE FORGOTTEN ONES 56 Three Fighters 58 The Enclaves: like Indians in the Reservations 63 Žepa 70 Easy Rider: Miodrag and Angelina 74 PART III MEMORY, AMNESIA AND GEOPOLITICS 80 Bakira and the Lukić Family: Hell in Višegrad 82 Bilo, pa proslo and the Cacophony of Genocide 89 Looking the Other Way: the Conspiracy of Silence 94 Revisionism, Geopolitics and Stones in Srebrenica 97 Amnesia and Reconciliation? 101 PART IV THE EUROPEAN SPRING THAT DOES NOT COME 104 Nights of Pussy Galore 106 Babies without ID, Flames in Tuzla and Sarajevo 109 Europe’s Eleventh Hour 115 Road to Nowhere: Edith’s Diary 120 Epilogue Return to Goražde 126 ACRONYMS 130
