The American Senator (Oxford World's Classics) Halperin, John; Trollope, Anthony Oxford University Press, USA, Oxford world's classics (Oxford University Press), Oxford, 1998
Arabella Trefoil, the beautiful anti-heroine of this novel, inspired Trollope to write of her, "I wished to express the depth of my scorn for women who run down husbands." Arabella's determination to find a rich husband is at the heart of this story and her character, though often maligned, is one of Trollope's most famous and vivid creations. About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more. **

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/The Devil and Sherlock Holmes - David Grann.epub
The devil and Sherlock Holmes : tales of murder, madness, and obsession David Grann; OverDrive, Inc Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group, 2011
Features “Trial by Fire,” the basis for the  true crime major motion picture starring Jack O’Connell, Laura Dern, Emily Meade and Jeff Perry From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of  Killers of the Flower Moon  comes this “gripping” ( The Miami Herald ) and “hilarious” ( EW ) collection of real-life mysteries about people whose obsessions propel them into unfathomable and often deadly circumstances. Whether David Grann is investigating a mysterious murder, tracking a chameleon-like con artist, or hunting an elusive giant squid, he has proven to be one of the most gifted reporters and storytellers of his generation. In  The Devil and Sherlock Holmes , Grann takes the reader around the world, revealing a gallery of rogues and heroes with their own particular fixations who show that truth is indeed stranger than fiction. ** Amazon.com Review Amazon Exclusive: A Q&A with David Grann We had the opportunity to chat with David Grann about his bestselling debut, The Lost City of Z , and his second book of nonfiction, * The Devil and Sherlock Holmes: Tales of Murder, Madness, and Obsession*. Read on to find out what David thinks about the "infinitely strange" business of writing nonfiction. Amazon.com: Have you stayed in touch with any of the individuals you wrote about in The Devil and Sherlock Holmes? David Grann: In the course of researching the book, I got to know an array of astonishing characters. They include a marine biologist named Steve O’Shea who was trying to be the first person to ever to capture a giant squid and grow it in captivity; sandhogs digging an intricate maze of tunnels hundreds of feet beneath the streets of New York City; a Polish detective investigating whether an author planted clues to an actual murder in his postmodern novel; a fireman who suffered amnesia on 9/11 and is trying to piece together what happened to him on that tragic day; a baseball icon; cold killers; an imposter; and a school teacher, Elizabeth Gilbert, who attempted to prove that a man about to be executed for a deadly fire was really innocent. One of the strange things about reporting is that you spend a lot of time with someone and then resume your separate lives. But I occasionally hear from several of the characters in the stories. Gilbert, who had been paralyzed from the neck down in a car accident, recently called to tell me that after more than five years of rehabilitation she had begun to take steps with the aid of a walker. "I made it eighty yards," she said. "Almost a football field." Amazon.com: Given the opportunity, are there any stories you would like to revisit in the future? David Grann: Most of the pieces hopefully capture the essence of a story and don’t need elaboration. But as I learned from the strange and unexpected twists in these true tales, there is always a possibility that something new and startling may occur that would draw me back in. Amazon.com: As a journalist, how does the experience of writing essays differ from writing a longer work like The Lost City of Z ? David Grann: It’s very different. With a book, you can follow many different characters and paths. With essays, you have to keep the lens tightly focused. I really believe that some stories need to be told in longer narrative form, and others, like the dozen in The Devil and Sherlock Holmes , work ideally as shorter pieces. Amazon.com: Much of your writing revolves around individuals with unusually strong obsessions. The people you write about have focused their lives on everything from searching for giant squid to disbanding the most powerful gang in the U.S. prison system. Are there any characteristics that these individuals share? David Grann: Yes, as you mention, many of the characters are compelled by an obsession, even if the object of their obsession is very different. The other thing that many of them share is a curiosity and a hunger to explain, like Sherlock Holmes, the world around them--whether it be the unexplored sea, an underground empire, a secret prison gang, or a mysterious murder. Amazon.com: Many of these stories are rooted in ambiguous circumstances. Did your initial impressions change during the course of researching these people and events? David Grann: Definitely. When I began investigating these stories, I knew almost nothing about them. Many originated from little more than a tantalizing hint: a tip from a friend, a reference buried in a news brief. And so I hope that I take the reader on the same kind of journey that I experienced--a journey that often leads to conclusions that I never imagined. Amazon.com: Many of the stories in The Devil and Sherlock Holmes have a "stranger-than-fiction" quality to them. Have you ever considered trying your hand at fiction, or is the real world strange enough for you? David Grann: When I first started out as a writer, I had aspirations of becoming a novelist, but I could never invent compelling enough characters or plots. What’s wonderful about nonfiction is I get to meet these incredible characters--stick up men, sandhogs, prison escape artists, imposters, squid hunters, mobsters, FBI agents--and they allow me to spend time with them and document their private thoughts. If these dozen stories in the collection taught me anything, it is that life, to borrow a phrase from Sherlock Holmes, "is infinitely stranger than anything which the mind of man could invent." (Photo © Matt Richman) From Booklist The catchy title is misleading because this collection of 12 previously published articles by New Yorker staff writer Grann (who also wrote The Lost City of Z, 2009) has only one story that has anything to do with Holmes. Readers expecting true crime may also be disappointed because Grann’s work here ranges from several actual crime cases through articles that have only a nod toward mystery, as in “Life is Strange.” However, Grann’s in-depth reporting and vivid writing make this worthwhile reading for lovers of good journalism. The Holmes story, “Mysterious Circumstances,” traces the fate of a foremost Holmes scholar, about to bid on a lost archive of Arthur Conan Doyle’s, found garroted to death, surrounded by Sherlock Holmes mysteries. Another story, “The Chameleon,” examines a master imposter’s life. Perhaps the most gripping is “Which Way Did He Run?” in which the only firefighter of Engine Company 40 to survive the World Trade Center bombing, an amnesia victim, tries to piece together whether he acted as a hero or as a coward. --Connie Fletcher

Riots Not Diets!: Sex, Fat Studies and DIY Activism Helen Hester & Caroline Walters Theory, 2015
Fat studies, which has roots in fat activism, emerges as a response to a contemporary cultural landscape that is openly hostile towards fat people and their perceived social and aesthetic transgressions. This book builds on a deep admiration for this discipline and examines the relationship between fat, sex and sexuality. It follows in the wake of key texts – including The Fat Studies Reader (eds. Rothblum and Solovay, 2009), Deborah Lupton’s Fat (2012), and the academic journal Fat Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Body Weight and Society – which have broken new ground in the debates around fat embodiment. Their insights encompass issues such as health and the medicalization of ‘body mass’, cultural geographies of weight and size, and fatness and social justice. The discipline has been ahead of the curve, too, in understanding how intersecting forms of oppression impact embodiment. It has consistently demonstrated a commitment to better understanding the ways in which factors such as class, gender, race, age, ability, ethnicity, and sexuality can inform one another and shape the lived realities of fat people. Fat Sex: New Directions in Theory and Activism owes a debt to this activism infused scholarship, and seeks to draw on the strengths of the tradition in order to make a contribution to the field.

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/Toscanini_ Musician of Conscien - Harvey Sachs.epub
Toscanini : musician of conscience Sachs, Harvey Liveright Publishing Corporation, a division of W.W. Norton & Company, First edition, New York, 2017
On the 150th anniversary of his birth comes this monumental biography of Arturo Toscanini, whose dramatic life is unparalleled among twentieth-century musicians. It may be difficult to imagine today, but Arturo Toscanini—recognized widely as the most celebrated conductor of the twentieth century—was once one of the most famous people in the world. Like Einstein in science or Picasso in art, Toscanini (1867–1957) transcended his own field, becoming a figure of such renown that it was often impossible not to see some mention of the maestro in the daily headlines. Acclaimed music historian Harvey Sachs has long been fascinated with Toscanini’s extraordinary story. Drawn not only to his illustrious sixty-eight-year career but also to his countless expressions of political courage in an age of tyrants, and to a private existence torn between love of family and erotic restlessness, Sachs produced a biography of Toscanini in 1978. Yet as archives continued to open and Sachs was able to interview an ever-expanding list of relatives and associates, he came to realize that this remarkable life demanded a completely new work, and the result is Toscanini—an utterly absorbing story of a man who was incapable of separating his spectacular career from the call of his conscience. Famed for his fierce dedication but also for his explosive temper, Toscanini conducted the world premieres of many Italian operas, including Pagliacci , La Boheme , and Turandot , as well as the Italian premieres of works by Wagner, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Debussy. In time, as Sachs chronicles, he would dominate not only La Scala in his native Italy but also the Metropolitan Opera, the New York Philharmonic, and the NBC Symphony Orchestra. He also collaborated with dozens of star singers, among them Enrico Caruso and Feodor Chaliapin, as well as the great sopranos Rosina Storchio, Geraldine Farrar, and Lotte Lehmann, with whom he had affairs. While this consuming passion constantly blurred the distinction between professional and personal, it did forge within him a steadfast opposition to totalitarianism and a personal bravery that would make him a model for artists of conscience. As early as 1922, Toscanini refused to allow his La Scala orchestra to play the Fascist anthem, "Giovinezza," even when threatened by Mussolini’s goons. And when tens of thousands of desperate Jewish refugees poured into Palestine in the late 1930s, he journeyed there at his own expense to establish an orchestra comprised of refugee musicians, and his travels were followed like that of a king. Thanks to unprecedented access to family archives, Toscanini becomes not only the definitive biography of the conductor, but a work that soars in its exploration of musical genius and moral conscience, taking its place among the great musical biographies of our time. ** Review “[A] monumental new Toscanini biography. The most riveting pages are devoted to the nineteen-thirties and forties, when the conductor converted his favorite repertory―Beethoven, Verdi, and Wagner―into emblems of the fight against Fascism. I couldn’t help wondering: What would Toscanini have done if he had been confronted by geomusical snarl in Hamburg? He might have had something to say.” - Alex Ross, *The New Yorker * “Without doubt the most engaging, the best-written and certainly the most comprehensive Toscanini yet to be published.” - Rob Cowan, *Gramophone * “A very engaging and at times gripping chronicle of music and society, all of it devoted to the unending drive and conscientiousness that made Toscanini’s performances so riveting―and, to some, so repellent. . . . What comes through in Sachs’s long chronicle is the extent of Toscanini’s role, witting and unwitting, in transforming the way that classical music was produced and consumed in the twentieth century.” - David Denby, *The New Yorker * “Sachs’s account is persuasive and compelling in the important ways. . . . . Today, Toscanini is receding from our consciousness, notwithstanding his many records. . . . Creative geniuses can survive for centuries, even millenniums; interpreters inevitably go over the cultural cliff. But that doesn’t detract from the crucial―the central―role Toscanini played in our musical culture for well over 60 years. Nor from the almost universal regard he was held in as a man.” - Robert Gottlieb, *New York Times Book Review * “Toscanini’s significance as a superb artist and a key figure in the international arena is brilliantly captured in Harvey Sachs’s absorbing biography Toscanini: Musician of Conscience . . . . [Sachs] paints a captivating portrait of the conductor, from his birth in Parma in 1867 to his final days in New York 89 years later. . . . [A] feast for those drawn to music, culture, and politics.” - Jonathan Rosenberg, *Christian Science Monitor * “As a study of the life and times of one of the greatest conductors of all time, this book will not soon be bettered.” - Economist “No other musician had as great an impact as Arturo Toscanini on the performance of opera and symphonic music in the twentieth century. With tremendous passion and stubbornness―and thanks to his extraordinary talents―he reshaped our ideas about what a conductor’s goals should be and how to achieve them.” - James Levine “Sachs examines not only the artistic aspects but also the political, social, and private aspects of the man whom many consider the greatest conductor of his time. A reading of this biography helps us to understand this inflexible man, this musician who was so severe, also with himself, this conductor who represents a legend of the musical world, past and present. ” - Riccardo Muti “Arturo Toscanini was a gigantic figure in the history of musical performance...Harvey Sachs’ new biography is the most complete and involving story ever written about this amazing life.” - Plácido Domingo “Arturo Toscanini was not only one of the twentieth century’s towering figures of classical music and opera, but an inspirational figure as the world-renowned Italian artist who stood up to fascism. In this monumental biography, Sachs artfully weaves together both of these stories, offering rich insight into music and politics across an extraordinary life.” - David I. Kertzer, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of *The Pope and Mussolini * “Considering the great impact Arturo Toscanini had on my family―and certainly my father, Carmine Coppola, his first chair flute during the ’40s―I would say that Toscanini’s powerful personality brought a unity to his conducting...He was the music he was conducting, the interpretive being...I am reminded of all of this in reading Harvey Sachs’s comprehensive new biography, which dramatically re-creates both the conductor’s musical genius and the politics of a distant age.” - Francis Ford Coppola “An astonishing story of how Toscanini became a musical giant...The unbelievable detail in this book re-creates vividly the musical environment from the late 1800s onward.” - Antonio Pappano, music director, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London About the Author Harvey Sachs, author and music historian, has written for the New Yorker, the New York Times, Times Literary Supplement, and many other publications. He is on the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Paul Boehmer is a seasoned actor who has appeared on Broadway, film, and television, including The Thomas Crown Affair and All My Children. Coinciding with another of his passions, sci-fi, Paul has been cast in various roles in many episodes of Star Trek.

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/The Sixty-Five Years of Washing - Juan Jose Saer.pdf
The Sixty-Five Years of Washington Juan José Saer; Steve Dolph Open Letter, Lightning Source (Tier 4), [N.p.], 2014
"With meticulous prose, rendered by Dolph's translation into propulsive English, Saer's The Sixty-Five Years of Washington captures the wilderness of human experience in all its variety."— New York Times It's October 1960, say, or 1961, in a seaside Argentinian city named Santa Fe, and The Mathematician—wealthy, elegant, educated, dressed from head to toe in white—is just back from a grand tour of Europe. He's on his way to drop off a press release about the trip to the papers when he runs into Ángel Leto, a relative newcomer to Santa Fe who does some accounting, but who this morning has decided to wander the town rather than go to work. One day soon, The Mathematician will disappear into exile after his wife's assassination, and Leto will vanish into the guerrilla underground, clutching his suicide pill like a talisman. But for now, they settle into a long conversation about the events of Washington Noriega's sixty-fifth birthday—a party neither of them attended. Saer's The Sixty-Five Years of Washington is simultaneously a brilliant comedy about memory, narrative, time, and death and a moving narrative about the lost generations of an Argentina that was perpetually on the verge of collapse. Juan José Saer was the leading Argentinian writer of the post-Borges generation. The author of numerous novels and short-story collections (including Scars and La Grande ), Saer was awarded Spain's prestigious Nadal Prize in 1987 for The Event. Steve Dolph is the founder of Calque , a journal of literature in translation. His translation of Juan José Saer's Scars was a finalist for the 2012 Best Translated Book Award.

Go Tell It on the Mountain James Baldwin, James Baldwin Penguin Books Ltd, Penguin Twentieth-Century Classics, 2001
The electrifying first novel from James Baldwin, whose life and words are immortalized in the Oscar-nominated film I Am Not Your Negro 'I had to deal with what hurt me most. I had to deal with my father.' Drawing on James Baldwin's own boyhood in a religious community in 1930s Harlem, his first novel tells the story of young Johnny Grimes. Johnny is destined to become a preacher like his father, Gabriel, at the Temple of the Fire Baptized, where the church swells with song and it is as if 'the Holy Ghost were riding on the air'. But he feels only scalding hatred for Gabriel, whose fear and fanaticism lead him to abuse his family. Johnny vows that, for him, things will be different. This blazing tale is full of passion and guilt, of secret sinners and prayers singing on the wind. 'A beautiful, enduring, spirtual song of a novel' Andrew O'Hagan 'With vivid imagery, with lavish attention to details, Mr. Baldwin has told his feverish story' The New York Times

Ariadne's Clue: A Guide to the Symbols of Humankind (Mythos: The Princeton/Bollingen Series in World Mythology, 90) Stevens, Anthony Princeton University Press, Mythos, 2nd print., 1st paperback print, Princeton, N.J, post 2006], 2001
Symbolism is the most powerful and ancient means of communication available to humankind. For centuries people have expressed their preoccupations and concerns through symbolism in the form of myths, stories, religions, and dreams. The meaning of symbols has long been debated among philosophers, antiquarians, theologians, and, more recently, anthropologists and psychologists. In Ariadne's Clue, distinguished analyst and psychiatrist Anthony Stevens explores the nature of symbols and explains how and why we create the symbols we do. The book is divided into two parts: an interpretive section that concerns symbols in general and a "dictionary" that lists hundreds of symbols and explains their origins, their resemblances to other symbols, and the belief systems behind them. In the first section, Stevens takes the ideas of C. G. Jung a stage further, asserting not only that we possess an innate symbol-forming propensity that exists as a creative and integral part of our psychic make-up, but also that the human mind evolved this capacity as a result of selection pressures encountered by our species in the course of its evolutionary history. Stevens argues that symbol formation has an adaptive function: it promotes our grasp on reality and in dreams often corrects deficient modes of psychological functioning. In the second section, Stevens examines symbols under four headings: "The Physical Environment," "Culture and Psyche," "People, Animals, and Plants," and "The Body." Many of the symbols are illustrated in the book's rich variety of woodcuts. From the ancient symbol of the serpent to the archetypal masculine and feminine, from the earth to the stars, from the primordial landscape of the savannah to the mysterious depths of the sea, Stevens traces a host of common symbols back through time to reveal their psychodynamic functioning and looks at their deep-rooted effects on the lives of modern men, women, and children. **

The Scientist in the Early Roman Empire Richard Carrier Independent Publishers Group (Chicago Review Press), Durham, North Carolina, 2017
In this extensive sequel to Science Education in the Early Roman Empire , Dr. Richard Carrier explores the social history of scientists in the Roman era. Was science in decline or experiencing a revival under the Romans? What was an ancient scientist thought to be and do? Who were they, and who funded their research? And how did pagans differ from their Christian peers in their views toward science and scientists? Some have claimed Christianity valued them more than their pagan forebears. In fact the reverse is the case. And this difference in values had a catastrophic effect on the future of humanity. The Romans may have been just a century or two away from experiencing a scientific revolution. But once in power, Christianity kept that progress on hold for a thousand years—while forgetting most of what the pagans had achieved and discovered, from an empirical anatomy, physiology, and brain science to an experimental physics of water, gravity, and air. Thoroughly referenced and painstakingly researched, this volume is a must for anyone who wants to learn how far we once got, and why we took so long to get to where we are today. ** Review "Rigorous depth of research is Carrier's trademark, employed here to great effect. He presents a wealth of evidence and a spectacular look into the surprising variety and richness of science and technology in Roman times. Achievements as varied as astronomical computers like the Antikythera Device, the beginnings of surgical anesthetics and antiseptics, robotic theater performances and cuckoo clocks, hand crossbows and automatic weapons, and so much more. Carrier illuminates a world on the edge of scientific revolution, but ultimately denied by fate. He shows the triumph of Christianity brought with it open hostility to the scientific values necessary for progress to continue, leading us into a dark millennium, ending only when Western civilization could weaken Church power enough to defy it, and return to the values of the pagans of yore." —David Fitzgerald, author, The Mormons and Jesus: Mything in Action About the Author Richard Carrier , PhD, is a philosopher and historian of antiquity, specializing in contemporary philosophy of naturalism and Greco-Roman philosophy, science, and religion, including the origins of Christianity. He blogs regularly and lectures for community groups worldwide. He is the author of numerous books, including Sense and Goodness without God: A Defense of Metaphysical Naturalism and On the Historicity of Jesus . Truth : the press, the president, and the privilege of power Mary Mapes St. Martin's Publishing Group, New York, 2015
<p><b><i>Mary Mapes's Truth</i> (previously published as <i>Truth & Duty</i>) was made into the 2015 film Truth, starring Cate Blanchett, Robert Redford, Topher Grace and Elizabeth Moss. <br></b><br>A riveting play-by-play of a reporter getting and defending a story that recalls <i>All the</i> <i>President's Men</i>, <i>Truth </i>puts readers in the center of the "60 Minutes II" story on George W. Bush's shirking of his National Guard duty. The firestorm that followed that broadcast--a conflagration that was carefully sparked by the right and fanned by bloggers--trashed Mapes' well-respected twenty-five year producing career, caused newsman Dan Rather to resign from his anchor chair early and led to an unprecedented "internal inquiry" into the story...chaired by former Reagan attorney general Richard Thornburgh. <br><br><i>Truth</i> examines Bush's political roots as governor of Texas, delves into what is known about his National Guard duty-or lack of service-and sheds light on the solidity of the documents that backed up the National Guard story, even including images of the actual documents in an appendix to the book. It is peopled with a colorful cast of characters-from Karl Rove to Sumner Redstone-and moves from small-town Texas to Black Rock-CBS corporate headquarters-in New York City. <br><br><i>Truth </i>connects the dots between a corporation under fire from the federal government and the decision about what kinds of stories a news network may cover. It draws a line from reporting in the trenches to the gutting of the great American tradition of a independent media and asks whether it's possible to break important stories on a powerful sitting president.</p>

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/Retrieving Realism - Hubert Dreyfus.pdf
Retrieving Realism Hubert L. Dreyfus, Charles Taylor Harvard University, Department of Sanskrit & Indian Studies, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, MA, 2015
“A picture held us captive,” writes Wittgenstein in the Philosophical Investigations , describing the powerful image of mind that underlies the modern epistemological tradition from Descartes onward. Retrieving Realism offers a radical critique of the Cartesian epistemic picture that has captivated philosophy for too long and restores a realist view affirming our direct access to the everyday world and to the physical universe. According to Descartes, knowledge exists in the form of ideas in the mind that purportedly represent the world. This “mediational” epistemology―internal ideas mediating external reality―continues to exert a grip on Western thought, and even philosophers such as Quine, Rorty, and Davidson who have claimed to refute Descartes remain imprisoned within its regime. As Hubert Dreyfus and Charles Taylor show, knowledge consists of much more than the explicit representations we formulate. We gain knowledge of the world through bodily engagement with it―by handling things, moving among them, responding to them―and these forms of knowing cannot be understood in mediational terms. Dreyfus and Taylor also contest Descartes’s privileging of the individual mind, arguing that much of our understanding of the world is necessarily shared. Once we deconstruct Cartesian mediationalism, the problems that Hume, Kant, and many of our contemporaries still struggle with―trying to prove the existence of objects beyond our representations―fall away, as does the motivation for nonrealist doctrines. We can then begin to describe the background everyday world we are absorbed in and the universe of natural kinds discovered by science. ** Review This book is a spirited defense of a sensible yet profound idea all too often ignored in mainstream philosophy, namely, that our grip on the world is deeply rooted in contingent interpretations and practices, but that those modes of access to reality do not preclude our― sometimes ―coming to see it as it really is ‘in itself.’ Retrieving Realism is a passionate plea that we cannot escape seeing ourselves as being in direct contact with a world that vastly transcends us. (Taylor Carman, Barnard College) Two major philosophers are joining forces in order to offer an alternative account to the prevailing picture of the human mind and its cognitive powers. The book will obviously be on the reading list of all who seriously concern themselves with issues in contemporary philosophy when it is, like here, at its best. (Vincent Descombes, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris) Compact and engaging, Retrieving Realism is more approachable than its weighty subject matter might predict…[An] adventurous combination of arguments and mixing of philosophical cultures. (Peter Godfrey-Smith Boston Review ) About the Author Hubert Dreyfus is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley. Charles Taylor is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Philosophy at McGill University.

The Sixty-Five Years of Washington Juan José Saer; Steve Dolph Open Letter, Lightning Source (Tier 4), [N.p.], 2014
This entire novel consists of a discussion between two friends—one who just returned from Europe, the other a young accountant—about a grand birthday party neither one was able to attend. This doesn't stop them from swapping stories and hypotheses, which balloon into a riveting depiction of the complexities of life, especially at the dawn of Argentina's Dirty War. Gender and Representation in British Golden Age Crime Fiction: Women Writing Women Megan Hoffman Palgrave Macmillan UK : Imprint : Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, London, 2016
This book   provides an original and compelling analysis of the ways in which British women’s golden age crime narratives negotiate the conflicting social and cultural forces that influenced depictions of gender in popular culture in the 1920s until the late 1940s. The book explores a wide variety of texts produced both by writers who have been the focus of a relatively large amount of critical attention, such as Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers and Margery Allingham, but also those who have received comparatively little, such as Christianna Brand, Ngaio Marsh, Gladys Mitchell, Josephine Tey and Patricia Wentworth. Through its original readings, this book explores the ambivalent nature of modes of femininity depicted in golden age crime fiction, and shows that seemingly conservative resolutions are often attempts to provide a ‘modern-yet-safe’ solution to the conflicts raised in the texts. ** Review “The 1920s-40s were a time of great change for woman, politically, socially and career wise, which Hoffman succinctly summarises at the start of her book. … I really enjoyed this book. Hoffman’s readings of texts were consistently detailed and engaging, helping me to look at familiar stories in a new light. I also liked her writing style (a crucial element in a literary criticism book), as she was enjoyable to read and informative … .” (crossexaminingcrime, crossexaminingcrime.wordpress.com, July, 2016) Historical & Comparative Language Arts & Disciplines 20th Century English; Irish; Scottish; Welsh European Literary Criticism General Modern Fiction Linguistics

Rethinking Introspection : A Pluralist Approach to the First-Person Perspective Jesse Butler Palgrave Macmillan UK : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, New York, 2013
Offering a pluralist framework for understanding the nature, scope, and limits of self-knowledge from the first-person perspective, Rethinking Introspection argues that, contrary to common misconceptions, introspection does not operate through inner perception but rather develops out of a diverse array of mental states and cognitive processes.

Recycling the Disabled : Army, Medicine, and Modernity in WWI Germany Julie Anderson, Walton Schalick, Heather Perry, JULIE ANDERSON Manchester University Press, Manchester University Press, Manchester, 2014
Recycling the disabled: Army, medicine, and modernity in WWI Germany examines the 'medical organisation' of Imperial Germany for total war. Faced with mounting casualties and a growing labour shortage, German military, industrial, and governmental officials turned to medical experts for assistance in the total mobilisation of society. Through an investigation of developments in orthopaedic medicine, prosthetic technology, military medical organisation and the cultural history of disability, Heather Perry reveals how the pressures of modern industrial warfare not only transformed medical ideas and treatments for injured soldiers, but also transformed social and cultural expectations of the disabled body - expectations that long outlasted the war. This book is ideal for scholars and students interested in war, medicine, disability, science and technology, and modern Germany.

The Global Financial Crisis : Genesis, Policy Response and Road Ahead by Satyendra Nayak Springer India; Imprint: Springer; Springer, Springer Nature, New Delhi, 2013
This book takes a novel and holistic view of the global financial crisis and gives a comprehensive agenda for the reform of the global economy. It highlights why financial markets are more volatile than other markets and need better regulation. ** From the Back Cover The Financial Crisis, though originating in the US, is global and comparable with the Great Depression of the 1930s. The book takes both micro and macro view of the crisis. It examines the evolution of the global monetary system and looks at the crisis from a systemic angle. It examines the institutional changes in American capitalism and market mechanisms. The dynamics of the market and its cyclical characters are discussed. It examines the structural changes in the US economy. The role of globalization and international funds flow, their changing character and the growing interdependence among nations have been examined. At the micro level, the book discusses the subprime market and the gaps in the system that created the crisis. It deals with the supervisory structure and growing influence of the derivatives market and the synthetic products that are threatening the financial system. It also analyzes the fundamental changes in the global trading and payments patterns, which are influencing the US balance of payments and the US dollar. The secular changes in the structure of the US economy are impacting the global economy.  The work deals with the measures taken to resolve the crisis both in the US and on a global scale. The reforms necessary to avoid the recurrence of the crisis are outlined. The study aims to underline these factors and draw a perspective for the US dollar. It is also proposed to draw a scenario for a more efficient and equitable global monetary system with a role for the US dollar along with a new vehicle for international payments and finance. This would also include the reform of the global economic system and the IMF.  The special feature of the book is that it takes a holistic view of the problem. The systemic and macro issues are discussed in addition to its microanalysis. About the Author Dr. Satyendra S. Nayak is an independent financial advisor and consultant. Gender and Representation in British Golden Age Crime Fiction: Women Writing Women Megan Hoffman (auth.) Palgrave Macmillan UK : Imprint : Palgrave Macmillan, Crime Files, 1st ed. 2016, London, 2016
I also liked her writing style (a crucial element in a literary criticism book), as she was enjoyable to read and informative … .” (crossexaminingcrime, crossexaminingcrime.wordpress.com, July, 2016) Historical & Comparative Language Arts & Disciplines 20th Century English; Irish; Scottish; Welsh European Literary Criticism General Modern Fiction Linguistics Dedication 6 Acknowledgements 8 Contents 10 Chapter 1: Introduction 12 Chapter 2: Change and Anxiety: Historical Context 26 Women’s Education 29 Careers and the Workplace 31 Marriage and Motherhood 36 Birth Control 38 The Cult of Domesticity 40 Spinsters 42 Homosexuality 43 Chapter 3: ‘Everybody Needs an Outlet’: Nonconforming Women 49 Nonconforming Women as Detectives: Miss Climpson 51 Nonconforming Women as Detectives: Miss Silver 58 Nonconforming Women as Detectives: Miss Marple 62 Nonconforming Women as Detectives: Mrs Bradley 66 Nonconforming Women as Victims and Villains: Overture to Death and Murder is Easy 68 Strong Poison: The Vilified Victim 75 Chapter 4: A Joint Venture?: Love, Partnership and Marriage 82 ‘Treat'em rough?’: Courtship in Artists in Crime and Death in a White Tie 87 Partner, Interrupted: Representing Companionate Relationships in the Work of Margery Allingham and Dorothy L. Sayers 101 ‘Happily Ever Afterwards’: Agatha Christie’s Tommy and Tuppence 110 Chapter 5: Ladies of a Modern World: Education and Work 121 ‘In Her Own Place’: Successful Communities of Women in Gaudy Night and St Peter’s Finger 125 Quite Normal?: Stereotypes and Sexuality in Miss Pym Disposes and Laurels Are Poison 134 ‘A Most “Natural” Reaction’: Personal and Professional Conflict in The Fashion in Shrouds and Death in High Heels 147 Chapter 6: Sensational Bodies: Villains and Victims 165 ‘Not an Ordinary Murderess’: The Killer’s Body in Lord Edgware Dies, Unnatural Death, Dumb Witness and Peril at End House 167 ‘Erased from the Page’: The Victim’s Body in Speedy Death, The Body in the Library and Evil Under the Sun 180 Chapter 7: Conclusion 198 Bibliography 201 Index 209

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/Studies on the Abuse and Declin - F. A. Hayek.pdf
Studies on the Abuse and Decline of Reason: Text and Documents (Volume 13) (The Collected Works of F. A. Hayek) Friedrich A. Hayek; Bruce Caldwell THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO PRESS, University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 2010
Studies on the Abuse and Decline of Reason is a series of fascinating essays on the study of social phenomena. How to best and most accurately study social interactions has long been debated intensely, and there are two main approaches: the positivists, who ignore intent and belief and draw on methods based in the sciences; and the nonpositivists, who argue that opinions and ideas drive action and are central to understanding social behavior. F. A. Hayek’s opposition to the positivists and their claims to scientific rigor and certainty in the study of human behavior is a running theme of this important book. Hayek argues that the vast number of elements whose interactions create social structures and institutions make it unlikely that social science can predict precise outcomes. Instead, he contends, we should strive to simply understand the principles by which phenomena are produced. For Hayek this modesty of aspirations went hand in hand with his concern over widespread enthusiasm for economic planning. As a result, these essays are relevant to ongoing debates within the social sciences and to discussion about the role government can and should play in the economy. **

Between Sword and Prayer: Warfare and Medieval Clergy in Cultural Perspective (Explorations in Medieval Culture) Radosław Kotecki; Jacek Maciejewski; John S. Ott Koninklijke Brill N.V., Brill Academic Publishers, Leiden, The Netherlands, 2018
Between Sword and Praye r  is a broad-ranging anthology focused on the involvement of medieval clergy in warfare and a variety of related military activities. The essays address, on the one hand, the issue of clerical participation in combat, in organizing military campaigns, and in armed defense, and on the other, questions surrounding the political, ideological, or religious legitimization of clerical military aggression. These perspectives are further enriched by chapters dealing with the problem of the textual representation of clergy who actively participated in military affairs. The essays in this volume span Latin Christendom, encompassing geographically the four corners of medieval Europe: Western, East-Centra l, Northern Europe, and the Mediterranean. Contributors are Carlos de Ayala Martínez, Geneviève Bührer-Thierry, Chris Dennis, Pablo Dorronzoro Ramírez, Lawrence G. Duggan, Daniel Gerrard, Robert Houghton, Carsten Selch Jensen, Radosław Kotecki, Jacek Maciejewski, Ivan Majnarić, Monika Michalska, Michael Edward Moore, Craig M. Nakashian, John S. Composing capital : classical music in the neoliberal era Ritchey, Marianna The University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 2019
"The familiar old world of classical music, with its wealthy donors and ornate concert halls, is changing. The patronage of a wealthy few is being replaced by that of corporations, leading to new unions of classical music and contemporary capitalism. In Composing Capital, Marianna Ritchey lays bare the appropriation of classical music by the current neoliberal regime, arguing that artists, critics, and institutions have aligned themselves--and, by extension, classical music itself--with free-market ideology. More specifically, she demonstrates how classical music has lent its cachet to marketing schemes, tech firm-sponsored performances, and global corporate partnerships. As Ritchey shows, the neoliberalization of classical music has put music at the service of contemporary capitalism, blurring the line between creativity and entrepreneurship, and challenging us to imagine how a noncommodified musical practice might be possible in today's world."--Publisher's description

Secularism in Question: Jews and Judaism in Modern Times (Jewish Culture and Contexts) edited by Ari Joskowicz, Ethan B. Katz University of Pennsylvania Press, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 2), Philadelphia, 2015
For much of the twentieth century, most religious and secular Jewish thinkers believed that they were witnessing a steady, ongoing movement toward secularization. Toward the end of the century, however, as scholars and pundits began to speak of the global resurgence of religion, the normalization of secularism could no longer be considered inevitable. Recent decades have seen the strengthening of Orthodox movements in the United States and in Israel; religious Zionism has grown and radically changed since the 1960s, and new and vibrant nondenominational Jewish movements have emerged. Secularism in Question examines the ways these contemporary revivals of religion prompt a reconsideration of many issues concerning Jews and Judaism from the early modern era to the present. Bringing together scholars of history, religion, philosophy, and literature, this volume illustrates how the categories of "religious" and "secular" have frequently proven far more permeable than fixed. The contributors challenge the problematic assumptions about the development of secularism that emerge from Protestant European and American perspectives and demonstrate that global Jewish experiences necessitate a reappraisal of conventional narratives of secularism. Ultimately, Secularism in Question calls for rethinking the very terms that animate many of the most contentious debates in contemporary Jewish life and far beyond. Lakota America: A New History of Indigenous Power (The Lamar Series in Western History) Pekka Hämäläinen Yale University Press, Yale University Press, New Haven, 2019
The first comprehensive history of the Lakota Indians and their profound role in shaping America’s history This first complete account of the Lakota Indians traces their rich and often surprising history from the early sixteenth to the early twenty‑first century. Pekka Hämäläinen explores the Lakotas’ roots as marginal hunter‑gatherers and reveals how they reinvented themselves twice: first as a river people who dominated the Missouri Valley, America’s great commercial artery, and then—in what was America’s first sweeping westward expansion—as a horse people who ruled supreme on the vast high plains. The Lakotas are imprinted in American historical memory. Red Cloud, Crazy Horse, and Sitting Bull are iconic figures in the American imagination, but in this groundbreaking book they emerge as something different: the architects of Lakota America, an expansive and enduring Indigenous regime that commanded human fates in the North American interior for generations. Hämäläinen’s deeply researched and engagingly written history places the Lakotas at the center of American history, and the results are revelatory. ** MuPDF error: syntax error: invalid key in dict MuPDF error: syntax error: invalid key in dict MuPDF error: syntax error: invalid key in dict MuPDF error: syntax error: invalid key in dict MuPDF error: syntax error: invalid key in dict MuPDF error: syntax error: invalid key in dict MuPDF error: syntax error: invalid key in dict MuPDF error: syntax error: invalid key in dict MuPDF error: syntax error: invalid key in dict Cover 1 Half Title 2 Title 4 Copyright 5 Contents 6 Acknowledgments 8 A Note on Terminology 10 Introduction: Dark Matter of History 14 ONE A Place in the World 24 TWO Facing West 63 THREE The Imperial Cauldron 98 FOUR The Lakota Meridian 131 FIVE The Call of the White Buffalo Calf Woman 177 SIX Empires 221 SEVEN War 261 EIGHT Shapeshifters 307 NINE Upside-Down Soldiers 350 Epilogue: The Lakota Struggle for Indigenous Sovereignty 393 List of Abbreviations 406 Notes 412 Glossary 520 Index 522 A 522 B 523 C 524 D 526 E 527 F 527 G 528 H 529 I 530 J 530 K 530 L 531 M 532 N 534 O 535 P 536 Q 537 R 537 S 538 T 540 U 541 V 542 W 542 Y 543 Z 543

Friendship (Meridian: Crossing Aesthetics) Maurice Blanchot; translated by Elizabeth Rottenberg, 1997 Stanford University Press, 1971
For the past half century, Maurice Blanchot has been an extraordinarily influential figure on the French literary and cultural scene. He is arguably the key figure after Sartre in exploring the relation between literature and philosophy. This collection of 29 critical essays and reviews on art, politics, literature, and philosophy documents the wide range of Blanchot's interests, from the enigmatic paintings in the Lascaux caves to the atomic era. Essays are devoted to works of fiction (Louis-Rene des Forets, Pierre Klossowski, Roger Laporte, Marguerite Duras), to autobiographies or testimonies (Michel Leiris, Robert Antelme, Andre Gorz, Franz Kafka), or to authors who are more than ever contemporary (Jean Paulhan, Albert Camus). Several essays focus on questions of Judaism, as expressed in the works of Edmond Jabes, Emmanuel Levinas, and Martin Buber. Among the other topics covered are Andre Malraux's "imaginary museum," the Pleiade Encyclopedia project of Raymond Queneau, paperback publishing, the work of Claude Levi-Strauss, Benjamin's "Task of the Translator," Marx and communism, writings on the Holocaust, and the difference between art and writing. The book concludes with an eloquent invocation to friendship on the occasion of the death of Georges Bataille.

The Templar Papers - Ancient Mysteries, Secret Societies, And the Holy Grail Oddvar Olsen; Lynn Picknett; Robert Lomas RWW New Page Books, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., Franklin Lakes, NJ, 2006
Much has been written about the group of 14th-century warrior monks known as the Knights Templar. Some authors, such as Dan Brown in The Da Vinci Code, portray them as folk heroes wrongly accused. Others disagree, saying the Templar story is ultimately one of greed, deception, and idolatry. Just who were the Knights Templar? And what is their legacy? In The Templar Papers, author and historian Oddvar Olsen has assembled a veritable Who's Who of experts to unravel the mystery. Instead of rehashing previous scholarship, this book delves into new aspects of Templar lore, such as the origins of the order and its supposed survival after 1314. It attempts to answer the following: • Were the Templars devil worshippers who venerated a mysterious head? • Was the head that of John the Baptist? • What exactly did they find in Solomon's Temple? • Did they keep, and later hide, the Holy Grail and the Ark of the Covenant? You'll also discover the Templar link to Mary Magdalene and the Freemasons, including answers to questions such as: • Were Jesus and Mary lovers or, in fact, husband and wife? • Did Mary give birth to a child after Jesus' death? • Did Freemasonry originate from the Templars? The Templar Papers offers the inquisitive reader several lifetimes of research and insight. This is a distinctive and truly unique compilation that will stimulate your mind and settle the controversy. **

Bosnia in limbo : testimonies from the Drina River Borja Lasheras; Carlos Westendorp Y Cabeza Jessica Haunschild u. Christian Schön GbR. ibidem-Verlag, Stuttgart, 2018
To this day, almost all narratives on Bosnia focus on the 1990s, the war, and the labyrinth that Dayton’s institutional system represents. They also tend to be imbued with a perspective that often overdoes the ethnic and religious element. The truth is that, beyond the causes of war and its manifold tragedies, we actually know very little of its forgotten consequences, once the CNN effect is long gone. As importantly, we know very little of Bosnia today: a society shaped by the past, yes, but also exposed to shifting twenty-first-century dynamics. A society haunted not only by war tragedies but also by a long-standing and long overlooked social crisis. This revealing book thus tries to provide a somewhat different picture of Bosnia, twenty years after the war. Largely based on the author’s experience in the field, it is to some extent an account of rural Bosnia, in particular of the Drina River Valley, which bore the brunt of the ethnic cleansing in the 1990s. Yet, and starting off from that isolated region of open wounds, unfinished issues and a cast of characters that range from displaced persons and victims to committed women, the book aims to overall provide a portrait of modern Bosnia as such, while also looking critically at the workings of the international community and European diplomacy. The book, with its landscape of activists, Western diplomats, and inhabitants of an underground world in Sarajevo for LGBT and youths, shows a country of so-far failed Springs and leaders who go on with their bad governance. Meanwhile, the “Europe” towards which Bosnia theoretically moves drifts between a poor understanding of the country, a fear of conflict that acts as its Achilles’ heel, as well as lack of genuine interest, seems unable to really change things. This compelling book shows that Bosnia is still, in a way, a country in limbo. ** Russian & Former Soviet Union Political Science World TABLE OF CONTENTS 8 Acknowledgements 10 Prologue 12 INTRODUCTION 16 PART I IN THE DRINA VALLEY 22 The Road to Eastern Bosnia 24 River of Violence 27 Srbinje 32 The Office (Twin Peaks) 37 Life in Foča 40 The Foča of Zdravko Krsmanović 44 The Arrest of Mladić 46 The Hodžićs 51 PART II THE FORGOTTEN ONES 56 Three Fighters 58 The Enclaves: like Indians in the Reservations 63 Žepa 70 Easy Rider: Miodrag and Angelina 74 PART III MEMORY, AMNESIA AND GEOPOLITICS 80 Bakira and the Lukić Family: Hell in Višegrad 82 Bilo, pa proslo and the Cacophony of Genocide 89 Looking the Other Way: the Conspiracy of Silence 94 Revisionism, Geopolitics and Stones in Srebrenica 97 Amnesia and Reconciliation? 101 PART IV THE EUROPEAN SPRING THAT DOES NOT COME 104 Nights of Pussy Galore 106 Babies without ID, Flames in Tuzla and Sarajevo 109 Europe’s Eleventh Hour 115 Road to Nowhere: Edith’s Diary 120 Epilogue Return to Goražde 126 ACRONYMS 130

Moral Panics, the Media and the Law in Early Modern England edited by David Lemmings, Claire Walker Palgrave Macmillan Limited, New York, New York State, 2010
This book explores and exemplifies some of the subtler links between opinion, governance and law in early modern England by investigating moral panics. Modern media-driven 'law and order' panics may have originated in eighteenth-century England, with the development of the press and government sensibility to opinion, but there were earlier panics about witchcraft and popery. Essays by an experienced team of scholars discuss broadly episodes of moral panic before and after 1689, and consider their implications for changes in governance. Review 'This wide-ranging yet thematically cohesive collection succeeds not only in showcasing the talents of some of the leading historians of early modern England, but in raising fascinating questions about the relationship between the law, the press and elite and popular opinion and mentalities.' - English Historical Review 'There is a great deal to admire in this volume, which brings together a particulalry accomplished and distinguished set of contributors, and has much to say about the complex and shifting relations between authority, information and opinion.' - Peter Marshall, History About the Author DAVID LEMMINGS is Head of the School of History and Politics at the University of Adelaide, Australia. He is the author of Gentlemen and Barristers: the Inns of Court and the English Bar, 1680-1730 (Oxford, OUP, 1990), and Professors of the Law: Barristers and English Culture in the Eighteenth Century (Oxford, OUP, 2000), and editor of The British and their Laws in the Eighteenth Century (Woodbridge: Boydell Press, 2005). CLAIRE WALKER is Lecturer in History at the University of Adelaide, Australia. Her published research has focussed on religious women and the politics of recusancy in early modern England. She is the author of Gender and Politics in Early Modern Europe: English Nuns in France and the Low Countries (Basingstoke: Palgrave-Macmillan, 2003).

Islands: Nature and Culture (Earth) Stephen A. Royle Reaktion Books Ltd, Reaktion Books Ltd., London, 2014
From Charles Darwin’s enlightening voyage to the Galapagos Islands to moat-encased prisons incarcerating the world’s deadliest prisoners, islands have been sites of immense scientific, political, and creative importance. An inspiration for artists and writers, they can be lively centers of holiday revelry or remote, mysterious spots; places of escape or of exile and imprisonment. In this cultural and scientific history of these alluring, isolated territories, Stephen A. Royle describes the great variety of islands, their economies, and the animals, plants, and people who thrive on them. Royle shows that despite the view of some islands as earthly paradises, they are often beset by severe limitations in both resources and opportunities. Detailing the population loss many islands have faced in recent years, he considers how islanders have developed their homes into tourist destinations in order to combat economic instability. He also explores their exotic, otherworldly beauty and the ways they have provided both refuge and inspiration for artists, such as Paul Gauguin in Tahiti and George Orwell on the Scottish island of Jura. Filled with illustrations, Islands is a compelling and comprehensive survey of the geographical and cultural aspects of island life. ** Science & Nature Ecology Science Nonfiction Environment Nature Geography Earth Sciences Cover 1 Islands 5 Imprint Page 6 Contents 7 1. The Scientist in the Early Roman Empire Richard C. Carrier Pitchstone Publishing (US&CA), Durham, North Carolina, 2017
In this extensive sequel to __Science Education in the Early Roman Empire__, Dr.
