upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/Revenge_ Narcissistic Injury, Rage, and Re - Salman Akhtar.pdf
Revenge: Narcissistic Injury, Rage, and Retaliation Salman Akhtar; Henri Parens Jason Aronson, Inc.
Revenge: Narcissistic Injury, Rage, and Retaliation addresses the ubiquitous human wish to take revenge and settle scores. Featuring the contributions of eleven distinguished mental health professionals, it offers a panoramic and yet deep perspective on the real or imagined narcissistic injury that often underlies fantasies of revenge and the behavioral trait of vindictiveness. It describes various types of revenge and introduces the concept of a ‘good-enough revenge.’ Deftly blending psychoanalysis, ethology, religious studies, literary criticism, and clinical experience, the book goes a long way to enhance empathy with patients struggling with hurt, pain, and desires to get even with their tormentors. This volume is of great clinical value indeed! ** Review The cycle of humiliation, revenge, and counter-revenge is a central paradigm which plagues our species. Finally there is a fascinating study of this all too human phenomenon which draws on the insights of child development, psychoanalytic experience, great literature, and biological considerations. Written by premier clinicians and theoreticians, this book is both very rich in ideas and is very readable. Therapists at all levels of experience will learn much from this text and become more able to address these issues in treatment. (Ira Brenner, MD, Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia) Revenge is a ubiquitous human emotional experience, frequently fantasized, sometimes enacted, and yet it is all too rarely examined in depth. This book explores the relationship of revenge with narcissistic injury, rage, and retaliation. Sandwiched between an extensive overview of the topic by Akhtar and a critical examination of theories of aggression with case examples by Parens are eight excellent papers that range from relevant clinical case reports to literary and biopsychocultural perspectives. Indeed, as these contributors underline, the feeling of revenge can be either an adaptive response or pathological especially when enacted. Readers will gain in knowledge and therapeutic skills by delving into this stimulating and very worthwhile book. (Mary Kay O'Neil, PhD, Canadian Psychoanalytic Association) About the Author Salman Akhtar, MD, is a professor of psychiatry at Jefferson Medical College. He is also a training and supervising analyst at the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia. Henri Parens, MD, is a professor of psychiatry at Jefferson Medical College. He is also a training and supervising analyst at the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia.

The Heresy of Love (Nick Hern Books) Edmundson, Helen Nick Hern Books, London, England, 2012
Sister Juana writes dazzling plays, but her freedom of expression is threatened when a new archbishop arrives at her seventeenth-century convent. This epic play, first seen at the Royal Shakespeare Company, is a complex portrait of a nation and church in crisis and a unique look at the struggle for women's rights in a restrictive society. About the Author Helen Edmundson is the winner of The John Whiting Award for her play "The Clearing" and has written numerous adaptations and original pieces for the stage. These include "Anna Karenina," "The Mill on the Floss" and "War and Peace" for the hugely successful touring theatre company, Shared Experience. She is the award-winning author of "Coram Boy," which was seen on Broadway in 2007 and was nominated for five TONY Awards, and she received unanimous acclaim for her adaptation of Calderon de la Barca's "Life is a Dream" at the world famous Donmar Theatre. Her adaptation of Arthur Ransome's "Swallows and Amazons" received five star reviews at the Vaudeville Theatre in London's West End in 2011 and embarks on a nationwide tour in 2012.

Muslim Democratic Parties in the Middle East: Economy and Politics of Islamist Moderation (Middle East Studies) A. Kadir Yildirim Indiana University Press, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., Bloomington, 2017
“Represents an important advancement in developing the strand of literature that considers how economic conditions affect Islamist movements.” —Middle Eastern Studies A. Kadir Yildirim and other scholars have used the term “Muslim Democrat” to describe moderate Islamist political parties, suggesting a parallel with Christian Democratic parties in Europe. These parties (MDPs) are marked by their adherence to a secular political regime, normative commitment to the rules of a democratic political system, and the democratic political representation of a religious identity. In this book, Yildirim draws on extensive field research in Turkey, Egypt, and Morocco to examine this phenomenon and assess the interaction of economic and political factors in the development of MDPs. Distinguishing between “competitive [economic] liberalization” and “crony liberalization,” he argues that MDPs are more likely to emerge and succeed in the context of the former. He summarizes that the broader implication is that the economic liberalization models adopted by governments in the region in the wake of the Arab Spring have significant implications for the future direction of party systems and democratic reform.

Landscapes of the Itza : Archaeology and Art History at Chichen Itza and Neighboring Sites Linnea Holmer Wren; Cynthia Kristan-Graham; Travis Nygard; Kaylee R. Spencer University Press of Florida, University Press of Florida, Gainesville, FL, 2018
'An insightful collection, rich in new data and insights; at once the harvest of a generation of fieldwork and the foundation for work to come.'--Mary E. Miller, coauthor of The Spectacle of the Late Maya Court: Reflections on the Murals of Bonampak'Reminds us that there are always new things to learn about iconic places like Chichen Itza and that we can fall in love with them all over again.'--Jennifer P. Mathews, coeditor of Lifeways in the Northern Maya Lowlands: New Approaches to Archaeology in the Yucatan Peninsula'Long overdue. Brings together new data and interpretations about Chichen Itza through a refreshing mix of art history and archaeology, particularistic interpretation, and cross-cultural modeling.'--Scott R. Hutson, author of The Ancient Urban Maya: Neighborhoods, Inequality, and Built Form Chichen Itza, the legendary capital and trading hub of the late Maya civilization, continues to fascinate visitors and researchers with unanswered questions about its people, rulers, rituals, economics, religion, politics, and even chronology. Addressing many of these current debates, contributors to Landscapes of the Itza question when the city's construction was completed, what the purposes of its famous pyramid and other buildings were, whether the city maintained strict territorial borders, and how the city's influence was felt in smaller neighboring settlements such as Popola, Ichmul de Morley, and Ek Balam. Special attention is given to the site's visual culture, including its architecture, epigraphy, ceramics, sculptures, and murals. This volume is a much-needed update on recent archaeological and art historical work being done at Chichen Itza, offering new ways of understanding the site and its role in the Yucatan landscape.

«Yin-Yang» Interplay: A Renewed Formation Program for the Catholic Seminary in China (American University Studies) Chiu, Bit-shing Abraham (OFM) Peter Lang Inc., International Academic Publishers, Peter Lang Group, New York, 2014
«Yin-Yang» Interplay: A Renewed Formation Program for the Catholic Seminary in China puts the spotlight on the design of a renewed formation program for the Catholic seminary in China. Without any renewed formation, transformation becomes pessimistic in the Chinese Catholic Church (CCC). Though the road marching to spiritual transformation in China is long and winding, «Yin-Yang» Interplay offers those who are interested in laboring in this special vineyard vision a dream, and, more profoundly, hope. Indeed, this hope is based on the analysis of the political and religious background of the CCC and the data collected from twenty-six interviewees, especially the seminarians whose sincere sharing substantiates the author’s academic research and simultaneously opens a window to the world for understanding the CCC. On the foundation of theory and experience, the author suggests a renewed formation program that customizes the special political and religious situations in China. The program integrates traditional Confucianism, modern educational theory, and contemporary Chinese culture in order to foster a seedbed for the clerical formation of the CCC. Tides of war : a novel of Alcibiades and the Peloponnesian War Pressfield, Steven Bantam Books Ltd; Transworld Pub, First Edition (1 in number line), 2001
Alcibiades - mercurial soldier and charismatic commander without peer on land and sea, a man whom fortune always favoured. Raised as a ward of Pericles, later a protege of Socrates, and compared to Achilles by the adoring Athenian masses, he was to become the key figure in the Peloponnesian War - the tumultuous 27-year civil war between Athens and Sparta that would devastate Greece in the last quarter of the 5th century BC. At the outset, for all his Spartan upbringing, Alcibiades remained loyal to Athens. But his popularity - and his arrogance - fuelled the bitter resentment of rivals who secured his death warrant on a charge of treason. Encouraged to flee for his life (and showing masterful pragmatism for which he joined the enemy, the Spartans, and went on to lead their legendary scarlet-cloaked ranks from one military triumph to the next. What became clear to the opposing states was that whoever had Alcibiades at the head of their army would control Greece. It was Aristophanes once wrote that Athenians 'love, hate and cannot do without him' and to the end, their glory and downfall were shared. Recounted by one Polemides, a seasoned soldier accused of assassinating the great leader, Tides of War is an epic, thrilling retelling of ancient, near-forgotten history. From devastating battles on land and sea to the vicious political infighting and back-stabbing in the city of Athena herself, Steven Pressfield again succeeds in bringing historical precision and human scale to those dark, dangerous times, and paints an extraordinary portrait of this remarkable man whose fortunes were to mirror the ebb and flow of the tides of war... **

Conrad's 'Heart of darkness' and contemporary thought : revisiting the horror with Lacoue-Labarthe Lawtoo, Nidesh; Bloomsbury Publishing Plc;Bloomsbury Academic, Online-ausg, 2012,2013
With its innovative narrative structure and its controversial explorations of race, gender and empire, Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness is a landmark of 20th century literature that continues to resonate to this day. This book brings together leading scholars to explore the full range of contemporary philosophical and critical responses to the text. Conrad's Heart of Darkness and Contemporary Thought includes the first publication in English of philosopher Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe's essay, 'The Horror of the West', described by J. Hillis Miller as 'a major essay on Conrad's novel, one of the best ever written'. In the company of Lacoue-Labarthe, leading scholars explore new readings of Conrad's text from a full range of theoretical perspectives, including deconstructive, psychoanalytic, narratological and postcolonial approaches. Drawing on the very latest insights of contemporary thought, this is an essential study of one of the most important literary texts of the 20th century. ** Review ... provides a challenging and provocative reading of Heart of Darkness - not only for its timely re-assertion of Heart of Darkness as "one of the greatest texts of Western literature", but also for its provocation of the range of responses evidenced by the essays in this volume... Nidesh Lawtoo's volume sets up a critical dialogue between philosophy and literature and makes an important intervention in Conrad studies. -- Robert Hampson FEA, FRSA, Professor of Modern Literature, Royal Holloway, University of London, editor of Heart of Darkness (Penguin, 1995). Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe's newly translated philosophical reading of Heart of Darkness, the centerpiece of this volume, is "an event of thought" itself. It provokes in this collection of extraordinary essays, new and richly diverse readings of Conrad's novella. As responses to Lacoue-Labarthe's "The Horror of the West," these essays illuminate, and complicate - through accord, qualification, and disagreement - his important engagement with Heart of Darkness. All confirm, in their engaged and thoughtful attention to the text itself, Lacoue-Labarthe's assertion that Heart of Darkness is "one of the masterpieces of Western literature." Informed variously by contemporary philosophy and by critical theories of narrative, mimesis, and psychoanalysis, among others, these essays respond in their disparate tones and manners, to the French philosopher's contention that the West's "will to power" underlies the horrors of Roman colonization and Belgian atrocities in Africa as well as the Holocaust, current genocides and global violence, thus rendering them of striking currency and urgent relevance to us all. -- Andrea White, Professor of English, California State University at Dominguez Hills, USA Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty. -- J. G. Peters, University of North Texas CHOICE About the Author Nidesh Lawtoo is Lecturer in English at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. He is the author of The Phantom of the Ego: Modernism and the Mimetic Unconscious (2013). Revisiting the Medieval North of England: Interdisciplinary Approaches (Religion and Culture in the Middle Ages) Anita Auer, Denis Renevey, Camille Marshall and Tino Oudesluijs Gwasg Prifysgol Cymru / University of Wales Press, Religion and Culture in the Middle Ages, Cardiff, 2019
The medieval north of England has been underexplored to date, and this volume may be seen as an invitation for further exploration. It brings together scholars with shared interests in language, literature, culture, history and manuscript studies, viewed from different disciplinary perspectives such as English philology, historical linguistics and medieval literature. While many scholars have thus far been debating the dividing lines between north and south as well as between north, Midlands and south, the contributors to this volume are interested in texts produced in the north, the providence of which has been determined by way of affiliation to religious and civic writing centres including the important monastic houses in the north (such as Durham, York and the Yorkshire Cistercian houses). Most of the contributions grow out of recent and ongoing research projects that touch upon different aspects of the north of England in the medieval period. Concentrating on the north as a centre of manuscript production, dissemination and reception, this volume aims also at illustrating the fluidity of boundaries and communication, and the resulting links to different geographical regions.

Normativity and Control David Owens OUP Oxford, Oxford University Press USA, [S.l.], 2017
Do We Control What We Believe? Are We Responsible For What We Believe? These Two Questions Are Connected: The Kind Of Responsibility We Have For Our Beliefs Depends On The Form Of Control That We Have Over Them. For A Number Of Years David Owens Has Investigated What Form Of Control We Must Have Over Something In Order To Be Held To The Norms Governing That Thing, And Has Argued That Belief, Intention And Action Each Require A Different Type Of Control. The Forms Of Freedom Appropriate To Each Of Them Vary, And So Do The Presuppositions Of Responsibility Associated With Each Of Them. Issues In The Moral Psychology Of Belief Cast Light On Some Of The Traditional Problems Of Epistemology And In Particular On The Problems Of Scepticism And Testimony. In This Series Of Ten Essays Owens Explores Various Different Forms Of Control We Might Have Over Belief And The Different Forms Of Responsibility They Generate. He Brings Into The Picture Notable Recent Work In Epistemology: On Assurance Theories Of Testimony, On 'pragmatic Encroachment', On The Aim Of Belief And On The Value Of Knowledge. He Also Considers Topics In Related Fields Such As The Philosophy Of Mind (e.g. The Problem Of Self-knowledge And Theories Of The First Person) And The Philosophy Of Action (e.g. The Guise Of The Good And The Role Of The Will In Free Agency). Finally, Owens Suggests A Non-standard Reading Of The Sceptical Tradition In Early Modern Philosophy As We Find It In Descartes And Hume. Seven Of The Essays Collected Here Are Previously Published, One Has Been Heavily Revised, And Two Are Previously Unpublished. Owens Provides A Substantial Introduction Bringing Together The Themes Of The Essays. -- David Owens. Includes Bibliographical References (239-244) And Index.

The Paranormal : Research and the Quest for Meaning Eric Carlton Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2018
This title was first published in 2000:  A manifestation of mass hysteria, a compensation for physical or emotional deprivation, or an alternative to religion? What is the function of the paranormal in society? This question and its many possible answers are the subject of this scholarly study of our enduring fascination with experiences for which science provides no ready explanations. From the ancient cultures of Mesopotamia and Egypt to the present day, Eric Carlton surveys the development of ideas and research associated with the paranormal, culminating as it does today in the recognized academic status accorded to parapsychology. With a critical yet open mind, Carlton explores issues associated with the study of the paranormal, such as witchcraft beliefs, near-death experiences and the UFO phenomenon. Case studies are employed to illustrate and illuminate certain examples and theories. This thought-provoking book concludes that the paranormal and our study of it provides a multi-faceted vehicle for humanity's quest to find meaning in life. **

Hegel's critique of modernity : reconciling individual freedom and the community Luther, Timothy C. Lexington Books/Fortress Academic, 1st paperback ed, Lanham, 2010, ©2009
Hegel's enduring importance lies in the fact that his philosophy sheds light on many contemporary problems; his conception of freedom enables us to reconcile many of the differences that divide liberalism and communitarianism. While liberalism tends to overemphasize the individual and devalue the community, communitarianism tends to do the reverse. One of his central aims is to integrate liberalism's concern for the political rights and interests of individuals within the framework of a community. He tries to reconcile the individual and community in a way that creates the proper mix of liberty and authority. One of Hegel's goals is to discover social structures that will allow individuals to escape the alienation that characterizes contemporary life. He sought a method of reconciling his contemporaries to the modern world by overcoming the things that split the self from the social world; that is, a place where people are at home in the social world. A sense of estrangement is all too common, even for those who enjoy more personal freedom and material abundance than ever thought possible. While Hegel is speaking directly to and about his contemporaries, their social world bears much in common with ours. Consequently, his attempt to reconcile philosophical and social contradictions can elucidate our own condition. While the modern world reflects important contributions, the advent of modern liberalism leads to excessive individualism that fragments social life, leaving individuals disconnected and adrift from meaningful social life. The major goal of Hegel's political philosophy is to reconcile the individual with his or her political community in a way that overcomes the alienation of modern life. Review This is a very thorough, substantive, and readable discussion of the issue of individual freedom and the community in Hegel’s thought. It is centered on his Philosophy of Right , but in the double context of his philosophy of history and the post-Hegelian history of European modernity. What makes the book most interesting and relevant is the author’s Hegelian reflections on contemporary globalization, whose economic consequences we are now beginning to suffer due to individualism gone mad. I would heartily recommend it to educated readers, Hegel scholars, and political philosophers alike. (Anselm K. Min ) It is a sign of [Luther's] achievement that he is able to provide clear explanations of the dialectic and of Geist ; ...Luther has done us a great service by indicating the pressing need to think about the tension between the individual good and the common good, especially in light of our current economic woes. He has drawn up a detailed map of the Hegelian territory and marked the locations of buried treasure. We should be grateful for his exegetical and philosophic labors. ( Perspectives On Politics ) Luther provides a thoroughly clear presentation of Hegel?s political philosophy. But more importantly, through the use of concrete examples, he demonstrates connections between Hegel?s philosophy and contemporary political issues. The result is that Luther makes Hegel much more accessible to undergraduate students, an impressive achievement given Hegel's notorious reputation. (Patrick Horn ) About the Author Timothy C. Luther is professor of political science at California Baptist University and author of Lobbyists, Congress, and Gridlock: Private Money v. Public Interest, Hegel and Marx: Economics and Politics, and The Political Philosophy of Democracy: Its Origins, Promises, and Perils.

The Legacy of Tanzanian Musicians Muhidin Gurumo and Hassan Bitchuka : Rhumba Kiserebuka! Frank Gunderson; Hassan Rehani Bitchuka Maryland : Lexington Books, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, Lanham, Maryland, 2018
Muhidin Maalim Gurumo and Hassan Rehani Bitchuka are two of Tanzania’s most well-known singers in the popular music genre known as muziki wa dansi (literally, 'music for dancing'), a variation of the Cuban-based rhumba idiom that has been enormously impactful throughout central, eastern, and western Africa in the contemporary era. This interview-based dual biography investigates the lives and careers of these two men from an ethnomusicological and historical perspective. Gurumo had a career spanning fifty years before his death in 2014. Bitchuka has been singing professionally for forty-five years. The two singers, affectionately called mapacha (“the twins”) by their colleagues, worked together as partners for thirty years from 1973-2003. This study situates these exemplary individuals as creative agents in a local cultural context, showcasing interviews, narratives, and nostalgic reminiscences about musical life lived under Colonialism, state Socialism, and current politics in the global neoliberal democratic milieu. The book adds to a growing body of work about popular music in Dar es Salaam and shines a light on these artists’ creative processes, the choices they have made regarding rare resources, their styles and efficacy in conflict resolution, and their own memories regarding the musical art they have created. ** Review The Legacy of Tanzanian Musicians Muhidin Gurumo and Hassan Bitchuka is an essential book about east African popular music. Through storytelling that integrates compelling ethnographic accounts and secondary sources, Frank Gunderson meticulously examines the creative lives of two masterminds behind the popular muziki wa dansi scene. He unveils a rare archive of the undocumented history and practice of Tanzanian rhumba music. (Damascus Kafumbe, Middlebury College, author of Tuning the Kingdom: Kawuugulu Musical Performance, Politics, and Storytelling in Buganda) Much of the scholarship on African music tell readers a lot about African musical styles and genres, but very little about the human subjects who create, perform, and use them. By examining the life, musical output, and style of Muhidin Gurumo and Hassan Bitchuka, while broaching along the way issues of politics, economics, and spirituality, Gunderson unpacks in a singular text a uniquely Tanzanian musical lifeworld that is rooted in an African worldview. This is a must-read text, and a pointer to an important new direction in African musicology. (Austin C. Okigbo, University of Colorado, Boulder) Finally! Rhumba Kiserebuka firmly situates musical biography in the center of the ethnomusicological canon. Gunderson’s comprehensive ethnographic study of two great Tanzanian musicians and the trajectory of their careers—from governmental and government-affiliated parastatal affiliation to independent musicians—is a tour de force and will quickly become the standard for all historical work in ethnomusicology. (Gregory Barz, Vanderbilt University, President, Society for Ethnomusicology) About the Author Frank Gunderson is associate professor of ethnomusicology at Florida State University.

«Yin-Yang» Interplay: A Renewed Formation Program for the Catholic Seminary in China (American University Studies) Chiu, Bit-shing Abraham Peter Lang Inc., International Academic Publishers, Peter Lang Group, New York, 2014
Freedom from the Free Will: On Kafka's Laughter (SUNY Series in Contemporary Continental Philosophy) Dimitris Vardoulakis State University of New York Press; SUNY Press, State University of New York Press, Albany, 2016
Brings Kafka’s fiction into conversation with philosophy and political theory.   Many of Kafka’s narratives place their heroes in situations of confinement. Gregor Samsa is locked in his room in the Metamorphosis, and the land surveyor in The Castle is stuck in the village unable either to leave or to gain access to the castle. Dimitris Vardoulakis argues that Kafka constructs these plots of confinement in order to laugh at his heroes’ futile attempts to express their will. In this way, Kafka emerges as a critic of the free will and as a proponent of a different kind of freedom: one focused within the confines of one’s experience and mediated by one’s circumstances. Vardoulakis contends that his sense of humor is the key to understanding Kafka as a political thinker. Laughter, in this account, is the tool used to deconstruct power. By placing Kafka in dialogue with philosophy and political theory, Vardoulakis shows that Kafka can give us invaluable insights into how to be free—and how to laugh. “Vardoulakis’s original new book contributes to the fields of Kafka studies, political theory, and contemporary European philosophy by forcefully realigning our understanding of the problem of freedom and the free will as it traverses Kafka’s literary texts. Its greatest strength lies in its careful and rigorous exposition of the refractory concepts of freedom that circulate through Kafka’s most canonical works.” — Gerhard Richter, author of Inheriting Walter Benjamin “Freedom from the Free Will is at the forefront of a vibrant new development in Kafka studies that, without succumbing to old debates about Kafka’s supposed ‘religiosity,’ rigorously works out the philosophical undercurrents and theoretical consequences of his literary practices. The laughing, playful Kafka encountered in Vardoulakis’s book creates concepts of freedom that cannot be found elsewhere.” — Peter Fenves, author of The Messianic Reduction: Walter Benjamin and the Shape of Time

Cather Studies, Volume 11 : Willa Cather at the Modernist Crux Cather Cather Studies, Ann Moseley, John J. Murphy, Robert Thacker, John J. Murphy University of Nebraska Press, Cather studies, 11, Lincoln, 2017
Willa Cather at the Modernist Crux examines Willa Cather's position in time, in aesthetics, and in the world. Born a Victorian in 1873, Cather made herself a modernist through the poems, stories, and novels she wrote and published into the twentieth century. Beginning with a prologue locating Cather's position, this volume of Cather Studies offers three sets of related essays. The first section takes up Cather's beginnings with her late nineteenth-century cultural influences. The second section explores a range of discernible direct connections with contemporary artists (Howard Pyle, Frederic Remington, and Ernest Blumenschein) and others who figured in the making of her texts. The third section focuses on The Song of the Lark, a novel that confirms Cather's shift westward and elaborates her emergent modernism. An epilogue by the editors of The Selected Letters of Willa Cather addresses how the recent availability of these letters has transformed Cather studies. Altogether, these essays detail Cather's shaping of the world of the early twentieth century and later into a singular modernism born of both inherited and newer cultural traditions.

Honor for us : a philosophical analysis, interpretation and defense William Lad Sessions Continuum International Publishing Group, Incorporated, New York, New York State, 2010
Honor For Us is the first contemporary philosophical inquiry into the concept of honor.  It is unique not only in its analysis of six distinct concepts of honor, which includes an investigation into the place of honor in religious thought and ethics, but also in its interpretation of honor's prevalence in our own culture. Many would like to discard honor altogether as 'obsolete', but Sessions contends that the concept of honor is poorly understood, standing sorely in need of clarification.  He argues that the notion of honor remains viable in the face of powerful criticism, and that it has important features which warrant our normative interest. While not downplaying the 'dark side' of honor (violence, sexism, inegalitarianism, its abuse in religion), Sessions shows that honor not only constitutes a descriptively useful concept but also remains a potentially valuable concept for us today.

Wartime Letters of Rainer Maria Rilke, 1914-1921 Rainer Maria Rilke; M. D. Herter Norton Norton & Company, Incorporated, W. W., Norton library, New York, 1964, ©1940
The letters Rilke wrote during the war and postwar years are of particular interest not only for whatever they may contain of the wisdom of the poet, the artist, and the humanitarian, but for their analysis of the intellectual and spiritual currents of the time. These letters give the account of Rilke's own state of mind and of his final approach to the threshold of his great works. They show the rapid change he underwent after his reaction to the first excitement of the war; how his dismay at the cruelty and confusion of war helped to render the poet in him speechless for many years; how he nevertheless characteristically held to his own fundamental views throughout war and revolution and in spite of everything retained his belief in the capacity of humanity to create for itself a better future. **

Behaviorism John B. 1878-1958 Watson West Press, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 1), [N.p.], 2011
Preface WHILE this volume is written as a series of lectures and in a somewhat free and easy style, every effort has been made to present facts in unmutilated form and to state theoretical positions with accuracy. In approaching subjective psychology for the first time, the reader meets with one great difficulty. He comes in from the world of things-a world which he can manipulate, hold up, examine and change about. When he comes to subjective psychology, he leaves all this behind he has to face a world of intangibles, a world of definitions, and it takes him weeks to find out what this kind of psychology is about. Rare indeed is the individual who ever thoroughly awakens to the problems discussed in the general text books of introspective psychologies current today. . Because behavioristic psychology deals with tangibles, the reader sees no break between his physical, chemical, and biological world and his newly-faced behavioristic world. He may not like the simplicity and severity of behaviorism, but he cannot fail to understand Behaviorism if he but gives it a little honest reading. Therefore, the author hopes that this book will offer a happy approach to the whole field of psychology.....

Muslim Democratic Parties in the Middle East: Economy and Politics of Islamist Moderation (Middle East Studies) A. Kadir Yildirim Indiana University Press, Indiana series in Middle East studies, Bloomington, 2016
“Represents an important advancement in developing the strand of literature that considers how economic conditions affect Islamist movements.” — Middle Eastern Studies A.

Dialogues and Letters (Penguin Classics) Seneca; C. D. N. Costa Penguin Books, Limited, Penguin Classics, 2005
A major writer and a leading figure in the public life of Rome, Seneca (c. 4BC-AD 65) ranks among the most eloquent and influential masters of Latin prose. This selection explores his thoughts on philosophy and the trials of life. In the Consolation to Helvia he strives to offer solace to his mother, following his exile in AD 41, while On the Shortness of Life and On Tranquillity of Mind are lucid and compelling explorations of Stoic thought. Witty and self-critical, the Letters - written to his young friend Lucilius - explore Seneca's struggle to acquire philosophical wisdom. A fascinating insight into one of the greatest minds of Ancient Rome, these works inspired writers and thinkers including Montaigne, Rousseau, and Bacon, and continue to intrigue and enlighten.

“The WikiLeaks of its day” ( Time ) is as relevant as ever to present-day American politics. “The most significant leaks of classified material in American history.” – The Washington Post Not Fake News! The basis for the 2018 film The Post by Academy Award-winning director Steven Spielberg, The Pentagon Papers are a series of articles, documents, and studies examining the Johnson Administration’s lies to the public about the extent of US involvement in the Vietnam War, bringing to light shocking conclusions about America’s true role in the conflict. Published by The New York Times in 1971, The Pentagon Papers riveted an already deeply divided nation with startling and disturbing revelations about the United States' involvement in Vietnam. The Washington Post called them “ the most significant leaks of classified material in American history ” and they remain relevant today as a reminder of the importance of a free press and First Amendment rights. A debate of large proportions goes on in the Nation over our posture in Vietnam. Open debate and discussion of public issues are vital to our National Health. ” –Justice William O. Douglas “This heroic act of journalism , and the legal ruling it forced the US Supreme Court to make, still stand today as the most powerful legal and moral weapon in the American media’s battle against government secrecy… In honor of The Pentagon Papers , perhaps the first item on that long list of things we still don’t know should be finding the truthful analysis of America’s war on terrorism 15 years later, with no end in sight. Kahin, Cornell University “ The most significant leaks of classified material in American history. ” – Washington Post “ Clearly, secrecy remains a vexing subject in Washington. And on both the left and the right, views about the issue ― especially about its implications for the relationship between the press and the government ― continue to be shaped by an event that occurred almost four decades ago: The Pentagon Papers leak. By turning over a trove of classified documents to The New York Times in 1971, Daniel Ellsberg set in motion a political and legal battle of epic proportions. No other episode in American history has had greater influence on our conflicted politics of national-security secrecy. ” –Gabriel Schoenfeld, National Affairs * What readers are saying about *The Pentagon Papers **** “Still one of the best books written about the U.S. involvement in one of the greatest fiascoes every devised by our government . . . that is unless we look closely at our involvement in Afghanistan.” –Larry T. French, Amazon reviewer “Every now and then in my classes, a student(s) will really get 'into' the Vietnam War. I like to give a copy to those who will really value it… The lessons from this book are many. ” –Mike Manaloff, Amazon reviewer “ This book is a MEAL … Small wonder the US Government fought so hard to suppress these damning documents! The loss of credibility and innocent trust toward government in the USA did not start with the Watergate break in; it started during the US war against Vietnam… This tome is a treasure trove of primary documents , and the New York Times narrative is carefully written to honor the original meanings of quotations that have been pieced together and make it possible to publish the events and documents in a single volume.” –Donna Davis, Goodreads reviewer “ Utterly fascinating. The temptation to compare the lead up to Vietnam to our current wars falls away as the reader delves into the intricacies of the intrigue, all of which took place behind the scenes and years before all the flower children began protesting. This is not the baby boomer version of the war, where the youth were right there to go against the grain… Could not put this down. ” –Peter Mowris, Goodreads reviewer * Praise for Skyhorse Publishing * “In the era of corporate dominated mainstream media and feckless herd reporting, Skyhorse's willingness to tackle tough issues that other publishers won't touch has made it a critical cog in our democracy .” –Robert F. Kennedy Jr., New York Times bestselling author “It has been a pleasure watching Skyhorse Publishing develop into one of the largest and fastest-growing independent publishers over the last decade. Trident does a good deal of business with Skyhorse. Skyhorse has become a cornerstone of independent publishing and has taken its rightful seat in the world of major trade publishing.” –Robert Gottlieb, chairman of Trident Media Group, LLC About the Author Neil Sheehan is the author of A Fiery Peace in a Cold War and A Bright Shining Lie, which won the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction in 1989. He spent three years in Vietnam as a war correspondent for United Press International and The New York Times and won numerous awards for his reporting. In 1971, he obtained The Pentagon Papers, which brought the Times the Pulitzer Prize Gold Medal for meritorious public service. Sheehan lives in Washington, DC. He is married to the writer Susan Sheehan.

When Computers Were Women Jennifer S. Light Johns Hopkins University, Technology and Culture, 1999
The omission of women from the history of computer science perpet uates misconceptions of women as uninterested or incapable in the field. This article retells the history of ENIAC's "invention" with special focus on the female technicians whom existing computer histories have rendered invisible. In particular, it examines how the job of programmer, perceived in recent years as masculine work, originated as feminized clerical labor. The story presents an apparent paradox. It suggests that women were some how hidden during this stage of computer history while the wartime pop ular press trumpeted just the opposite?that women were breaking into traditionally male occupations within science, technology, and engineering.

Why Forage?: Hunters and Gatherers in the Twenty-First Century (School for Advanced Research Advanced Seminar Series) Brian F. Codding; Karen L. Kramer University of New Mexico Press Published in Association with School for Advanced Research Press, University of New Mexico Press, Santa Fe, 2016
Foraging persists as a viable economic strategy both in remote regions and within the bounds of developed nation-states. Given the economic alternatives available, why do some groups choose to maintain their hunting and gathering lifeways? Through a series of detailed case studies, the contributors to this volume examine the decisions made by modern-day foragers to sustain a predominantly hunting and gathering way of life. What becomes clear is that hunter-gatherers continue to forage because the economic benefits of doing so are high relative to the local alternatives and, perhaps more importantly, because the social costs of not foraging are prohibitive; in other words, hunter-gatherers value the social networks built through foraging and sharing more than the potential marginal gains of a new mode of subsistence. Why Forage? shows that hunting and gathering continues to be a viable and vibrant way of life even in the twenty-first century. ** About the Author Brian F. Codding is an assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Utah. He has published more than thirty peer-reviewed papers on the ecology of hunter-gatherers. Karen L. Kramer is an associate professor of anthropology at the University of Utah and the author of Maya Children: Helpers at the Farm .

The Archaeology of Mediterranean Placemaking : Butrint and the Global Heritage Industry Richard Hodges Bloomsbury Academic, an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, Bloomsbury UK, London, UK, 2017
Butrint has been one of the largest archaeological projects in the Mediterranean over the last two decades. Major excavations and a multi-volume series of accompanying scientific publications have made this a key site for our developing understanding of the Roman and Medieval Mediterranean. Through this set of interwoven reflections about the archaeology and cultural heritage history of his twenty-year odyssey in south-west Albania, Richard Hodges considers how the Butrint Foundation protected and enhanced Butrint's spirit of place for future generations. Hodges reviews Virgil's long influence on Butrint and how its topographic archaeology has now helped to invent a new narrative and identity. He then describes the struggle of placemaking in Albania during the early post-communist era, and finally asks, in the light of the Butrint Foundation's experience, who matters in the shaping of a place – international regulations, the nation, the archaeologist, the visitor, the local community or some combination of all of these stakeholders? With appropriate maps and photographs, this book aims to offer an unusual but important new direction for archaeology in the Mediterranean. It should be essential reading for archaeologists, classical historians, medievalists, cultural heritage specialists, tourism specialists as well as those interested in the Mediterranean's past and future. ** Review “No one is better positioned to recount the archaeological history of Butrint than Richard Hodges … Hodges is a clear and engaging writer whose personalized account make this book hard to put down … Though not strictly writing a guidebook, Hodges has produced an important and, at times, controversial introduction to the site of Butrint that grapples with many of the critical issues that are faced by archaeologists today as they navigate the way archaeology helps to make a place.” – New England Classical Journal “Jones performs an admirable service in this book by drawing our attention to artifacts that are not usually considered in tandem, and by expanding our view of what we might consider ‘Roman art’ in the process.” - Classical World “In this brief yet thought-provoking book, archaeologist Richard Hodges examines how the modern Butrint, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1992, has evolved over time and how narratives about the place have been constructed … Hodges’ meditations on his experience at Butrint underscore the difficulty of responsible archaeology and cultural heritage management.” - Bryn Mawr Classical Review About the Author Richard Hodges OBE, is President of The American University of Rome, Italy. Hate, Politics, Law: Critical Perspectives on Combating Hate (Studies in Penal Theory and Philosophy) Thomas Brudholm; Birgitte Schepelern Johansen Oxford University Press, Incorporated, Oxford University Press USA, Oxford [UK], 2018
References to hate have become ubiquitous in the modern response to group defamation and violence in liberal democracies. Whether expressed in speech, acted out in criminal conduct, or seen as the fuel of terror and extremism, hate is persistently considered a vice, an evil, and a threat to the modern liberal democracy. But what exactly is at stake when societies oppose hate? In Hate, Politics, Law: Critical Perspectives on Combating Hate , Thomas Brudholm and Birgitte Schepelern Johansen have gathered a group of distinguished scholars who offer a critical exploration and assessment of the basic assumptions, ideals, and agendas behind the modern fight against hate. They explore these issues and provide a range of explanatory and normative perspectives on the awkward relationship between hate and liberal democracy, as expressed, for example, through anti-hate speech and anti-hate crime initiatives. The volume further examines the presuppositions and ideological roots of fighting hate, as well as its blind spots and limits. It also includes discussions on the definition and meaning of hate, the longer and broader history of the concept of hate, and when and why fighting hatred became politically salient. While most research on hate crime is written and published in order to prevent and combat hate, *Hate, Politics, Law * takes a much-needed theoretical, historical, and exploratory approach to hatred. ** Cover 1 Series 3 Hate, Politics, Law 4 Copyright 5 Contents 6 Acknowledgments 8 List of Contributors 10 Introduction 14 Part I Historicizing Hatred 26 chapter 1 From Race to Hate: A Historical Perspective 28 chapter 2 Hate and the State in Ancient Greece 47 Part II Conceptualizing Hatred 64 chapter 3 Hatred Beyond Bigotry 66 chapter 4 Problematizing Hatred in Democratic States 89 chapter 5 Toward a Legal Concept of Hatred: Democracy, Ontology, and the Limits of Deconstruction 107 Part III Responses to Hatred 126 chapter 6 Criminalizing Hate? 128 chapter 7 Readdressing Hate Crime: Synthesizing Law, Punishment, and Restorative Justice 163 chapter 8 Tolerance: An Appropriate Answer to Hate? 185 chapter 9 From Hate to Political Solidarity: The Art of Responsibility 205 Part IV Democratic Hatreds? 226 chapter 10 Democratic Hatreds: The Making of “the Hating Enemy” in Liberal Democracy 228 chapter 11 When the State Hates 249 Epilogue 274 chapter 12 Concluding Thoughts: The Legality and Politics of Hatred 276 Index 294

Shakespearean Celebrity in the Digital Age: Fan Cultures and Remediation (Palgrave Studies in Adaptation and Visual Culture) Anna Blackwell Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, Cham, Switzerland, 2018
This book offers a timely examination of the relationship between Shakespeare and contemporary digital media. By focusing upon a variety of ‘Shakespearean’ individuals, groups and communities and their ‘online’ presence, the book explores the role of popular internet culture in the ongoing adaptation of Shakespeare’s plays and his general cultural standing. The description of certain performers as ‘Shakespearean’ is a ubiquitous but often throwaway assessment. However, a study of ‘Shakespearean’ actors within a broader cultural context reveals much, not only about the mutable face of British culture (popular and ‘highbrow’) but also about national identity and commerce. These performers share an online space with the other major focus of the book: the fans and digital content creators whose engagement with the Shakespearean marks them out as more than just audiences and consumers; they become producers and critics. Ultimately, Digital Shakespeareans moves beyond the theatrical history focus of related works to consider the role of digital culture and technology in shaping Shakespeare’s contemporary adaptive legacy and the means by which we engage with it. ** From the Back Cover This book offers a timely examination of the relationship between Shakespeare and contemporary digital media. Beyond civilization : humanity's next great adventure Daniel Quinn Random House International : Hi Marketing [distributor, New York, New York State, 2009
In Beyond Civilization , Daniel Quinn thinks the unthinkable. We all know there's no one right way to build a bicycle, no one right way to design an automobile, no one right way to make a pair of shoes, but we're convinced that there must be only one right way to live -- and the one we have is it, no matter what. Beyond Civilization makes practical sense of the vision of Daniel Quinn's best-selling novel Ishmael . Examining ancient civilizations such as the Maya and the Olmec, as well as modern-day microcosms of alternative living like circus societies, Quinn guides us on a quest for a new model for society, one that is forward-thinking and encourages diversity instead of suppressing it. Beyond Civilization is not about a "New World Order" but a "New Personal World Order" that would allow people to assert control over their own destiny and grant them the freedom to create their own way of life right now -- not in some distant utopian future. From the Trade Paperback edition. ** Amazon.com Review Futurist Daniel Quinn ( Ishmael ) dares to imagine a new approach to saving the world that involves deconstructing civilization. Quinn asks the radical yet fundamental questions about humanity such as, Why does civilization grow food, lock it up, and then make people earn money to buy it back? Why not progress "beyond civilization" and abandon the hierarchical lifestyles that cause many of our social problems? He challenges the "old mind" thinking that believes problems should be fixed with social programs. "Old minds think: How do we stop these bad things from happening?" Quinn writes. "New minds think: How do we make things the way we want them to be?" Whether he is discussing Amish farming, homelessness, "tribal business," or holy work, Quinn's manifesto is highly digestible. Instead of writing dense, weighty chapters filled with self-important prose, he's assembled a series of brief one-page essays. His language is down to earth, his metaphors easy to grasp. As a result, readers can read about and ponder Beyond Civilization at a blissfully civilized pace. --Gail Hudson From Publishers Weekly With the publication of his trilogy of novels (Ishmael; The Story of B; My Ishmael), Quinn became something of a cult figure in visionary fiction. In those books, Quinn explored the self-sustaining nature of tribal societies and his belief that the current worldwide ecological and economic crises are due to the agriculture-based organization of civilized societies. He now turns his hand to nonfiction, with an appeal for universal renewal through a "New Tribal Revolution." Acknowledging that it would be impossible for most civilized humans to return to the hunting and gathering typical of tribes, Quinn argues that modern men and women need to invent a completely different mode of existence. To do this, they must question a basic assumption of all civilized societies: "Civilization must continue at any cost and must not be abandoned under any circumstances." Quinn, borrowing from Richard Dawkins, calls this assumption a "meme," the cultural equivalent of a gene. Quinn's main examples are peoples like the Maya and Anasazi, who returned to tribalism after unsuccessful attempts at other types of social organization, and the communal structure of traditional circuses. The author has a knack for stating the obvious with tremendous personal conviction. His articulation of a simpler way of life will appeal to those made frantic by globalization and all the forces conspiring to make people dance as fast as they can. (Oct.) Green Imperialism: Colonial Expansion, Tropical Island Edens and the Origins of Environmentalism, 1600-1860 (Studies in Environment and History) Richard Grove; Richard H. Grove Cambridge University Press, 1996, Studies in environment and history, 1st pbk. ed, Cambridge [England] ; New York NY, 1996
Green Imperialism is the first book to document the origins and early history of environmentalism, concentrating especially on its hitherto unexplained colonial and global aspects. It highlights the significance of Utopian, Physiocratic, and medical thinking in the history of environmentalist ideas. The book shows how the new critique of the colonial impact on the environment depended on the emergence of a coterie of professional scientists, and demonstrates both the importance of the oceanic island "Eden" as a vehicle for new conceptions of nature and the significance of colonial island environments in stimulating conservationist notions. Review "...a fascinating and important book....extremely wide-ranging....Mention must be made of the author's facility in utilizing a remarkable diversity of sources. His understanding of the literature (in many languages) and his wide general knowledge are rare, and, in addition, he writes well. The bibliography is excellent and the interesting asides in footnotes, entertaining and informative." H-Net Book Review "As a work of global colonial environmental history, this work is unsurpassed. It adds breadth, depth, and new influences; it opens numerous and important avenues for further inquiry. On some levels, it is a pathbreaking book, full of hypotheses to be tested in new and different climates and historical milieus. It sees a vivid environmentalism in colonial history and offers several significant avenues through which to see new trends....This book belongs on the shelf of every environmental historian. For those with particular interest in global relationships, colonialism, and the roots of economy and environment in Africa and Asia, this is a marvelous addition to the literature. Richard Grove has given us one of the most wide-ranging and thought-provoking books of the decade." Hal Rothman, Environmental History "A valuable reference for scholars studying European colonial history, anthropology, archaeology, and the environmental movement." Choice "Anyone who assumes that environmentalism is a twentieth-century phenomenon concerning primarily European and US problems is likely to find this book illuminating. Richard H. Grove, a leading historian of science in the age of empires, shows in fascinating detail, through the experience and writings of scientists who went out to the colonies, that environmental thought evolved in early modern times (1600s-1800s)....This book is remarkable and may well change the prevailing ideas about a major period in the history of science. It is likely to make impossible some of the generalizations that have become current about the origins of environmental concern. Grove's scholarship is impressive, his literary style is congenial and readable, and his narrative constantly presents newly unearthed facts and interpretations that are unexpected but almost always convincing." J. Donald Hughes, BioScience "The great strength of his [Grove] work is its remarkable search for globalization, matched by his own prodigious scholarly travels. He has also produced some convincing internationalization of scientific thought and identified key strands, not least the French derived from Mauritius and the Scots from India." John MacKenzie. International History Review "Grove's study of the origins and development of European environmentalism is an outstanding work of interpretive scholarship, even a revolutionary one. It should become required reading for students of European relations." Journal of Interdisciplinary History "Grove has set out to write a traditional, primarily European-oriented, intellectual history of the roots of Western environmentalism. He has taken up an enormous challenge. To criticize a few weaknesses is to compliment him for his attempt here at grand theory. This is a volume that will prove to be one of the mainstays of the small but growing encyclopedia of global environmental history." American Historical Review "Grove writes a cultured and literate prose that is a joy to read. His jugments are based on solid research in source materials that are found in the European imperial centers and also in the former colonies, some of them scattered and difficult of access. This book deserves a prominent place beside Alfred W. Crosby's Ecological imperialism as a key to understanding the environmental consequences of European worldwide expansion. Although Grove wisely avoids applying his study to the twentieth-century environmental crisis, it seems to this reviewer that his work offers an indispensable background for those who would like to know how the supposed caretakers of the earth arrived where they are today. The first concerns are well chronicled here, as are the first missteps." Journal of World History "...Grove has fused colonial expansion, the roots of modern science, and what he calls the roots of environmentalism in a multi-layered attempt to push the genealogical tree of environmenatlism back in time....Grove pushes us back both further in time and broader in geographic space than any existing history of the roots of environmentalism....As a work of gloabal colonial environmental history, this work is unsurpassed. It adds breadth, depth, and new influences; it opens numerous and important avenues for further inquiry. On some level, it is a pathbreaking book, full of hypothesis to be tested in new and different climates and historical milieus. It sees a vivid environmentalism in colonial history and offers several significant avenues through which to see new trends." Hal Rothman, Environmental History "...this book...forces a vast and new research agenda on environmental history which, when completed, will greatly illuminate our past, and explain a bit better the reasons for our present predicaments. GReen Imperialism will remain a pioneering work, a book that will take its own place in history...." S. Ravi Rajan, Capitalism Nature Socialism Book Description Concentrating especially on its hitherto unexplained colonial and global aspects, this is the first book to document the origins and early history of environmentalism. It highlights the significance of Utopian, Physiocratic, and medical thinking in the history of environmentalist ideas.

upload/bibliotik/0_Other/2/2018 Boris Groys - Russian Cosmism.pdf
Russian Cosmism (The MIT Press) Grojs, Boris E-flux ; The MIT Press, MIT Press, Cambridge, MA, 2018
Crucial texts, many available in English for the first time, written before and during the Bolshevik Revolution by the radical biopolitical utopianists of Russian Cosmism. Cosmism emerged in Russia before the October Revolution and developed through the 1920s and 1930s; like Marxism and the European avant-garde, two other movements that shared this intellectual moment, Russian Cosmism rejected the contemplative for the transformative, aiming to create not merely new art or philosophy but a new world. Cosmism went the furthest in its visions of transformation, calling for the end of death, the resuscitation of the dead, and free movement in cosmic space. This volume collects crucial texts, many available in English for the first time, by the radical biopolitical utopianists of Russian Cosmism. Cosmism was developed by the Russian philosopher Nikolai Fedorov in the late nineteenth century; he believed that humans had an ethical obligation not only to care for the sick but to cure death using science and technology; outer space was the territory of both immortal life and infinite resources. After the revolution, a new generation pursued Fedorov's vision. Cosmist ideas inspired visual artists, poets, filmmakers, theater directors, novelists (Tolstoy and Dostoevsky read Fedorov's writings), architects, and composers, and influenced Soviet politics and technology. In the 1930s, Stalin quashed Cosmism, jailing or executing many members of the movement. Today, when the philosophical imagination has again become entangled with scientific and technological imagination, the works of the Russian Cosmists seem newly relevant. Karl Polanyi : A Life on the Left Gareth Dale Columbia University Press, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), New York, 2016
Karl Polanyi (1886–1964) was one of the twentieth century's most original interpreters of the market economy. His penetrating analysis of globalization's disruptions and the Great Depression's underlying causes still serves as an effective counterargument to free market fundamentalism. This biography shows how the major personal and historical events of his life transformed him from a bourgeois radical into a Christian socialist but also informed his ambivalent stance on social democracy, communism, the New Deal, and the shifting intellectual scene of postwar America. The book begins with Polanyi's childhood in the Habsburg Empire and his involvement with the Great War and Hungary's postwar revolution. It connects Polanyi's idealistic radicalism to the political promise and intellectual ferment of Red Vienna and the horror of fascism. The narrative revisits Polanyi's oeuvre in English, German, and Hungarian, includes exhaustive research in five archives, and features interviews with Polanyi's daughter, students, and colleagues, clarifying the contradictory aspects of the thinker's work. These personal accounts also shed light on Polanyi's connections to scholars, Christians, atheists, journalists, hot and cold warriors, and socialists of all stripes. Karl Polanyi: A Life on the Left engages with Polanyi's biography as a reflection and condensation of extraordinary times. It highlights the historical ruptures, tensions, and upheavals that the thinker sought to capture and comprehend and, in telling his story, engages with the intellectual and political history of a turbulent epoch. ** Review Here is the book the many admirers of Karl Polanyi have been waiting for: a vivid, thoroughly researched, and lucidly written intellectual biography that is worthy of its subject. It traces Polanyi's life and developing ideas first in central Europe, then in Britain and North America, showing both their rootedness in the 'lost world' of twentieth-century socialism and their ever-greater relevance to making sense of the market societies of our own time. (Steven Lukes, author of Power: A Radical View ) One of the best biographies ever written of any intellectual emerging from the horrors of mid-twentieth-century Europe. It meticulously covers the whole ground―from the Jewish roots in Budapest through the First War, brilliantly reconstructs the milieu and debates of interwar Vienna, and adds enormously to our understanding of The Great Transformation . A compelling portrait, it is successful not just as an intellectual biography but as a personal one as well. (John A. Hall, author of Ernest Gellner: An Intellectual Biography ) Writing the intellectual biography of one of the truly great thinkers of the twentieth century, an heir to Rousseau―comparable in importance to Max Weber or to John Maynard Keynes―is a daunting enterprise. Particularly so, since Polanyi's life is bound to the history of a European radicalism now defunct or dormant. Gareth Dale is equal to this task, the complexity of which is incredible. I have no doubt that this is a durable work that will be read by generations. Also, it will show that this half-submerged chapter in the chronicle of revolutionary and―to say the same with another word―theoretical upheavals is indispensable for everybody who still insists on being able to think critically. (G. M. Tamás, author of Innocent Power: 100 Notes, 100 Thoughts ) This is a well-written, often sparkling, always informative, comprehensive narrative about the life and work of Karl Polanyi. The analysis is rich with cultural and historical contextualization, full of interesting allusions and reflections, and wonderfully evocative of the unfolding events on a European and transatlantic stage―it will be the standard reference point for all future work on Polanyi. (Bob Jessop, University of Lancaster) This much needed and accessibly crafted biography by a recognized authority on Karl Polanyi is well researched and supported by a range of sources, including archival material, interviews, and other contemporaneous scholars. The rich historical sourcing provides stimulating material for both scholarly audiences and general readers interested in the lives, contributions, and intellectual thought of fascinating individuals and scholars who lived through this particularly era. (Sally Randles, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Manchester Institute of Innovation Research) The long wait for an intellectual biography of Karl Polanyi is finally over. The task is intimidating because Polanyi's concepts are difficult to untangle and his life was divided into successive sojourns in five different countries with three different languages. But Gareth Dale has succeeded in writing an engaging and meticulously researched book that illuminates Polanyi's ideas and situates them in their proper historical context. (Fred Block, author of The Power of Market Fundamentalism: Karl Polanyi's Critique ) About the Author Gareth Dale is senior lecturer in politics and international relations at Brunel University, London. His other books include Karl Polanyi: The Limits of the Market (2010), Karl Polanyi: The Hungarian Writings (2016), and Green Growth: Ideology, Political Economy, and the Alternatives (2016).
