lgli/Capitalism, Health and Wellbeing Rethinking Economic Growth for a Healthier, Sustainable Future [AN 3729062].pdf
Capitalism, Health and Wellbeing: Rethinking Economic Growth for a Healthier, Sustainable Future Rob Noonan Emerald Publishing Limited, PS, 2024
Health inequalities are widening, and crises of obesity, physical inactivity and mental health are worsening around the world. Yet there remains a reluctance to discuss the threat capitalism poses to health and wellbeing. Offering a unique contribution to the field, Capitalism, Health and Wellbeing: Rethinking Economic Growth for a Healthier, Sustainable Future addresses the elephant in the room: economic growth. Challenging this crucial yet overlooked issue, author Rob Noonan contends that the drive for economic growth is at odds with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals to achieve a better and more sustainable future. He argues that if the ‘health for all’ goal is to be achieved, it is imperative to redesign the economic system and social progress metrics that promote productivity and consumption at the expense of health and wellbeing. While clearly outlining the challenges governments face, Noonan offers solutions on how we can reverse the accelerating trends of obesity, physical inactivity and poor mental health, as well as how we can use scientific understanding and history to improve public health and reduce health inequalities. Rooted in thoughtful evidence and achievable actions, this work empowers readers to contribute to positive transformation and create a healthier, more just and more sustainable world.

lgli/Critical Perspectives on Educational Policies and Professional Identities Lessons From Doctoral Studies [3767982].pdf
Critical Perspectives on Educational Policies and Professional Identities: Lessons from Doctoral Studies Richard Waller; Jane Andrews; Timothy Clark Emerald Publishing Limited, FR, 2024
This edited volume is the first to exclusively feature the work of doctoral graduates themselves. Critical Perspectives on Educational Policies and Professional Identities offers an important example of doctoral study within the field of education policy, emphasizing the impact and transferability of findings across a range of educational sectors. The collection features the cutting-edge work of 14 doctoral graduates from the University of the West of England (UWE), generally writing in collaboration with an experienced academic from their supervisory team. The volume explores the issue of education policy and its impact on the professional identities of those working across the sector, including the changing professional and policy contexts currently confronting doctoral candidates and their peers. The chapters are arranged into three thematic sections, each featuring work from a wide range of educational Constructions of the Professional and Society; Interrogating Approaches to Becoming, Being and Developing as Education Professionals; and Challenging Education Policy and Practice. The doctoral graduate is lead author in all instances, and the process of curating and developing the collection to offer Early Career Researchers a supported pathway into academic publication is outlined in the editors opening contribution. In the concluding chapter, Prof Meg Maguire (KCL) reflects upon the role of professional doctorates in aiding our understanding of educational policies and professional identities across the sector.

Gender Violence, the Law, and Society: Interdisciplinary Perspectives from India, Japan and South Africa (Emerald Interdisciplinary Connexions) M. Susanne Schotanus Emerald Group Publishing, Emerald Publishing, Bingley, 2022
The ebook edition of this title is Open Access, thanks to Knowledge Unlatched funding, and freely available to read online. Gender Violence, the Law, and Society analyses and explores the historical and cultural roots of issues of gender-based and sexual violence in Japan, India and South Africa. Using a variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary methods, this edited collection highlights the intersection of marginalized gender and sexual identities – such as raped women, gay men and women who are victims of commodified violence – and marginalized geographic areas. Taking a structured and holistic approach, the chapters authors break down issues across three levels: violence, state, and society. By exploring case studies from the three selected geographical areas, both the roots and effects and related organization and belief systems are explored in their relations to the issues of sexual and gendered violence. The chapters expose and consider the complexities and nuances in each country in terms of their varying cultural practices, their religious and caste systems, and racial disparities, whilst exploring and expanding the understanding of the concept of violence itself. Gender Violence, the Law, and Society takes an important step towards synthesizing area-specific issues and knowledge into a more comprehensive and global body of knowledge on the apparently universal appearances of forms of sexual and gendered violence.

School Improvement Networks and Collaborative Inquiry: Fostering Systemic Change in Challenging Contexts (Emerald Professional Learning Networks Series) Mauricio Pino Yancovic, Alvaro González Torres, Luis Ahumada Figueroa & Christopher Chapman Emerald Publishing Limited, Emerald professional learning networks series, Bingley, England, 2019
Existing research on Professional Learning Networks looks at experiences in Europe and North America, with very little attention focused on education systems in the Global South, such as Chile. In 2015 more than 500 School Improvement Networks were created to support state-funded schools across the country with the idea of promoting a culture of collaboration. Although schools are expected to work in networks, they are held to account individually through high-stakes standardized testing and external inspections. This book employs the theoretical framework of collaborative inquiry to guide a mixed method study of fifteen in-depth multi-site case studies and descriptive statistical analysis of a questionnaire answered by 400 networks. The analysis provides evidence of the depth and spread of the knowledge and collaborative practices of these networks. Linking with the literature on Professional Learning Networks, this study highlights how school improvement networks can support the professional capital of principals and curriculum coordinators. The findings of this study are discussed around the issue of network sustainability, stressing the importance of network leadership and conditions of system infrastructure to mobilize network knowledge to schools, increasing the potential impact of school networks to transform schools' practices. By providing a unique inquiry, into an under researched part of the globe in regards to school networks, this book will prove invaluable for academics and practitioners in the areas of mixed method research, educational leadership and comparative education.

Measuring Inclusive Education (International Perspectives on Inclusive Education, 3) Chris Forlin & Tim Loreman Emerald Group Publishing Limited, Emerald Publishing, Bingley, UK, 2014
In the first section, broad issues associated with assessment for, of, and in learning in inclusive classrooms; measuring the implementation of inclusive policy; identifying and removing barriers to inclusion; resourcing and financing; and, evaluating effective teacher preparation for inclusion provide the structure for discussion. The second section commences with a current and in-depth review of the literature on the development of international indicators for measuring inclusive education. zlib/no-category/Mark Harvey/Climate Emergency: How Societies Create the Crisis_124061049.epub
Climate emergency : how societies create the crisis Mark Harvey Emerald Publishing Limited, SocietyNow, United Kingdom, 2021
The recognition that climate change is now a climate emergency has been endorsed by a wide range of scientists and the United Nations. Natural scientists focus on the aggregate impacts of human activity resulting from burning fossil fuels and producing food, and hence speak of anthropogenic climate change. Climate Emergency analyses the socio-economic and political forces driving the climate emergency, developing the complementary concept of 'sociogenic climate change' to show how societies both create the crisis and are challenged by it in different ways. Harvey demonstrates how societies inhabit different resource environments, whether for fossil fuel reserves, or for land, sun, and water, differences which condition their histories and cultures. In introducing the sociogenic approach to climate change, Harvey re-examines history through the lens of climate change, re-writing the climate impact of the British industrial revolution; US settler colonialism; slavery and Native American genocides; the electrification of societies and infrastructures for fossil-fuelled transportation; and changes in our eating habits. In the big historical picture, different societies and political economies have both created an unequal world and so continue to make an unequal contribution to climate change. This can only be understood by showing how societies have come to distinctively exploit planetary resources in different ways. Societies create the crisis and have to be politically involved in addressing the crisis.

lgli/Nigel Isaacs - Enthalpy, Moisture and Ventilation Issues in Buildings (2019, ).pdf
Enthalpy, Moisture and Ventilation Issues in Buildings : International Journal of Building Pathology and Adaptation Nigel Isaacs; Steve McNeil; William Rose Emerald Publishing Limited, International Journal of Building Pathology and Adaptation Ser, v. 4, Bradford, West Yorkshire, 2019
In the 1st century BC, Vitruvius was clear on the role of the building's roof to protect the walls and foundations from rainwater (Vitruvius Pollio et al., 1914, p. 177, Book VI, Chap 3) and the removal of the water by the use of drains (Vitruvius Pollio et al., 1914, p. 156, Book V, Chap 9). Recognised as an issue since antiquity, there has been a great deal of fragmented research on building moisture, but the topic still represents a problem area in too many buildings. Research has tended to focus on local problems, and as a result the lessons and associated knowledge are either not relevant, or more dangerously used inappropriately, for other locations or climates. This eBook brings together a wide range of international research into moisture in buildings. There are six papers from around the globe, including Europe, North America and Oceania. Three papers explore moisture issues in roof spaces, two deal with moisture in the floor and sub-floor, and one paper is about moisture in walls. The results and models reported in this eBook will contribute to a better international understanding of issues of moisture in buildings, as well as providing improved guidance to practitioners faced with either not wishing to create future moisture problems or to resolve current problems.

Formalise, prioritise and mobilise : how school leaders secure the benefits of professional ... learning networks CHRIS BROWN AND JANE FLOOD Emerald Publishing Limited, Emerald Professional Learning Networks, 1, 2019
Professional learning networks (PLN) of teachers and others (such as university researchers) collaborating outside of their everyday community of practice are considered to be an effective way to foster school improvement. At the same time, to generate change, PLNs require effective support from school leaders. Such support should be directed at ensuring those participating in PLNs can engage in network learning activities; also that this activity can be meaningfully mobilised within participant's schools. What is less well understood however are the actions school leaders might engage in to provide this support. To address this knowledge gap, this book presents a case study of how senior leaders attempted to maximise the effectiveness of participating in PLNs for one learning network: the New Forest Research Learning Network (RLN) - a specific type of PLN designed to facilitate research-informed change at scale. In-depth semi-structured interviews with RLN participants, as well as impact data and policy documents, have been used to ascertain the types of leadership practices employed and their nature (i.e. whether geared towards prioritising, formalising or mobilising the work of the PLN). Also presented is an assessment of the perceived effectiveness of these practices and suggestions for the type of leadership activity that appear to maximise the effectiveness of schools engaging in professional learning networks more generally.

Gendering Struggles Against Informal and Precarious Work (Political Power and Social Theory Book 35) Rina Agarwala & Jennifer Jihye Chun Emerald Group Publishing Limited, Political power and social theory, United Kingdom, 2018
Gender is a defining feature of informal/precarious work in the 21st century, yet studies rarely adopt a gendered lens when examining collective efforts to challenge informality and precarity. This volume foregrounds the gendered dimensions of informal/precarious workers' struggles as a crucial starting point for re-theorizing the future of global labor movements. This volume includes six empirical chapters spanning five countries - the United States, Canada, South Korea, Mexico, and India - to explore exactly how gender is intertwined into informal/precarious workers organizing efforts, why gender is addressed, and to what end. The chapters focus on two gender-typed sectors - domestic work and construction - to identify the varying experiences of and struggles against gender and informality/precarity, as well as the conditions of movement success and failure. Across countries and sectors, the volume shows how informal/precarious worker organizations are on the front lines of challenging the multiple forms of gendered inequalities that shape contemporary practices of accumulation and labor regulation. Their struggles are making major transformations in terms of increasing women's leadership and membership in labor movements and exposing how gender interacts with other ascriptive identities to shape work. They are also re-shaping hegemonic scripts of capitalist accumulation, development, and gender to attain recognition for female-dominated occupations and reproductive needs for the first time ever. These outcomes are crucial as sources of emancipatory transformations at a time when state and public support for labor and social protection is facing the deep assault of transnational production and globalizing markets.

Advances in the economic analysis of participatory & labor-managed firms. Volume 16 Takao Kato, Antti Kauhanen, Alex Bryson Emerald Group Publishing Limited, Emerald Publishing, Bingley, U.K., 2015
"Alternative types of ownership and participatory managerial practices have recently been intensively debated. The Great Recession has revived interest in cooperative and labor-managed organizations. In addition, employee participation in decision-making and financial performance has consistently attracted attention during the last 20 years. The articles in this Volume contribute to both of these topics. The first set of articles studies the relationship among business cycles, alternative forms of ownership, and employee voice. These papers take various theoretical and empirical approaches and investigate many industries and countries. They show how the economic downturn is leading to increased incidence of employee ownership but also undermining employee voice by increasing the incidence of atypical employment. The second set of papers looks inside firms. The topics include the relationship between ownership and innovation and how financial participation and group incentives affect employee attitudes and work effort. The contributions in this volume provide stimulating research in the broad area of participatory and labor-managed organizations."--Back cover

South Africa's transition to democracy has seen massive changes in the field of teacher education aimed at integrating its previously raced and gendered character. This book provides a comprehensive historical overview and relational understanding of the patterns of teacher preparation supporting South Africa's unequal formal education system. It shows how emerging patterns, policies and pedagogies were deeply entangled with the country's position within a broader international and colonial order as well as with dominant national political and economic social frameworks.  Using rich archival and oral evidence, this book illuminates how successive policies restricted and enabled access to different institutions, while differentiated curricula prepared teachers to teach students intended to play different roles in a society marked by class, race and gender division. It explores the location and control of teacher provision for black and white teachers provided by mission societies and the state in colleges and universities. Post-apartheid governments sought to reverse entrenched racial legacies in education through closure of the colleges and incorporation of teacher preparation into universities, altered admission criteria and new curricula. These have resulted in new tensions which have arisen in relation to a world of competing pressures on universities and teachers. By shedding new light on these tensions from a historical perspective, this book will prove an invaluable resource for education leaders and researchers in the field of global and comparative education.

Business Models and Cognition Kristian J. Sund (editor), Robert J. Galavan (editor), Marcel Bogers (editor) Emerald Publishing Limited, New Horizons in Managerial and Organizational Cognition, 2020
The concept of the business model has become very popular in the strategy and innovation literature's. Recent research has acknowledged its cognitive underpinnings, its status as a mental construct, and has highlighted how managers cognitive and social sense-making patterns influence business model design and how shared logics enable innovation. Yet, the specific cognitive underpinnings of business models, though often mentioned, are rarely explicitly studied. Business Models and Cognition addresses this gap by focusing directly on intersections between business model studies and cognitive studies. Gathering an international, multidisciplinary team of business model and cognition scholars, this book not only identifies surprising connections between these two existing literature's, but also offers new reflections on future avenues of research for both in order to explore the cognitive foundations of business modelling. For its interdisciplinary scope, scholarly rigor, and novel insights, this fourth volume of the New Horizons in Managerial and Organizational Cognition is a must-read for scholars and students of business, strategy and cognition, and it is of keen interest to executives and managers eager to reflect critically on their own understanding of the business model as a concept.

Duty to Revolt : Transnational and Commemorative Aspects of Revolution George Souvlis; Athina Karatzogianni Emerald Group Publishing, Emerald Publishing, Bingley, 2023
Throughout the 19th century, revolutionary movements united intellectuals, artists, dissidents, and significant segments of the population in joint crusades in the name of justice or liberation against empires and aristocratic elites, often across class, religious, race and national lines. Duty to Revolt takes the Greek Revolution as a foundational historical departure point to investigate historical continuities and discontinuities in transnational and commemorative aspects of revolutionary wars. This edited collection provides an innovative and comprehensive contribution to the study of historical revolutions and their commemoration, as well as contemporary protests and uprisings, and how they are communicated today in everyday networked media. Duty to Revolt is the first work of its kind to take an interdisciplinary approach across historical time on this subject and bringing together leading and emerging scholars in several fields, merging history and political science with digital media and communication studies.

Maturing Leadership : How Adult Development Impacts Leadership Jonathan Reams Emerald Publishing Limited, Emerald Publishing, Bingley, United Kingdom, 2020
We've known for years now that demands on leaders are only increasing. Yet we have lacked widely understood, empirically grounded and rigorous ways to support the development of adequate maturity of heart, complexity of mind and skilful practice for leaders to meet these demands. Over the past three decades, a growing number of scholars and practitioners have explored the value of a developmental approach to these issues. In Maturing Leadership, Jonathan Reams brings together a cast of expert contributors to introduce this work to a wider audience. While this approach has previously been on the margins of mainstream leadership development research, Reams brings it to the centre, moving beyond the clichéd characterizations of 'inner work' to bring a finer granularity, precision and rigor to the subjective workings of leaders. The chapters explore how applying insights from the field of constructivist cognitive development can be a key driver for supporting improvements in how we approach leadership development. For researchers and students of leadership, this is an essential addition to the leading theories of developmental approaches to leadership. Increasing complexity in the world is not a passing fad, and the need for leaders to grow in the maturity and sophistication of their responses is a long-term need. If you are interested in hearing a series of conversations with the editor and chapter authors of this book, look up the podcast Phronesis: Practical Wisdom for Leaders. There, episodes 154- 163 are all about the topics in this book.

Core-Periphery Patterns Across the European Union : Case Studies and Lessons From Eastern and Southern Europe Gabriela Carmen Pascariu & Maria Adelaide Pedrosa Da Silva Duarte Emerald Group Publishing Limited, Emerald Publishing, Bingley, 2017
The EMU debt crisis that emerged in 2010 has identified a group of Southern countries, especially Greece, Portugal, Spain and Italy, as low performers exhibiting several serious macroeconomic imbalances, and it has also highlighted that EU integration experienced by Eastern European countries (especially the latter-comers to EU) was not accompanied by a rapid process of real convergence. Since then, the research about the effects of peripherality have regained a renewed interest to ultimately ground better regional policy recommendations aimed at achieving a sustained reduction of income per capita disparities across EU regions.  In this new work, Pascariu and Duarte, along with an international group of acclaimed scholars, delve into key challenges currently facing the European Union. They investigate this central question: does the domestic market system lead to the development of a center-periphery model, by highlight gaps, or does it support the convergence process? Analyzing the effects of peripherality across the EU regions, a two-fold approach is used to deliver policy recommendations grounded in economic theory, and of interest to other countries and regions facing a process of integration.

The Romance of Heroism and Heroic Leadership George R. Goethals; Scott T. Allison Emerald Publishing Limited, Emerald Publishing, Bingley, UK, 2019
Heroes permeate our culture. From superheroes on screen to the everyday heroics of our public services, the word 'hero' is a familiar descriptor in every form of media. But what makes a hero? And what makes heroes 'heroic'?Leadership experts George R. Goethals and Scott T. Allison explore how the romantic conceptions of heroes and heroic leaders are constructed, both in real life and in our heads. Looking at the dichotomy of heroism and villainy, they offer insights into Donald Trump's ascension to the US presidency, particularly detailing the correspondence between the needs of the US public and the promises the former reality TV star made in reply. They also consider how three highly charismatic men dramatically and fundamentally changed American society in the mid-twentieth century - Martin Luther King (1929-1968), Elvis Presley (1935-1977), and Muhammad Ali (1942-2016), called here the "Three Kings" of the US. This exciting and innovative study explores how charisma and human needs create images of individuals as heroes and villains. For researchers and students of psychology and leadership, this is a fundamental text on the creation of both genuine heroes, and false idols

Crises and popular dissent : the divided west Mike O'Donnell Emerald Group Publishing, First edition, Bingley, 2021
The first two decades of the new millennium brought with it a chain of crises and reaction headlined by the plane-bombing of New York's Trade Center twin towers, the financial crash of 2007-8 and subsequent austerity, and latterly Brexit, the rise and fall (for now) of Donald Trump, including the Capitol attack, and Covid-19. The health and political aspects of the virus are discussed in the context of planetary well-being and climate change. Crises and Popular Dissent brings these apparently disparate issues into focus by addressing five thematic questions: Why from being the hegemonic global ideology did liberalism go into crisis? What do populists want that liberalism is not providing? Why is nationalism so important to right populists? What part might social movements play in a progressive revival? What might a participatory democratic and progressive future mean for the planet and the species? The concluding chapter is interactive asking readers to consider issues raised in the text as individuals and members of groups. O'Donnell's main focus is on liberalism and populism in the United States, Europe and Britain, arguing for an internationalist rather than nationalist perspective and response to the turmoil of the period. A pattern emerges of right populism primarily as a reactive phenomenon to immigration mediated by nationalism, partly obscuring causes of structural inequality exacerbated by neoliberalism. Particular attention is given to left social movement movements such as Extinction Rebellion and Black Lives Matter in building a left radical response. O'Donnell provides an informed, integrated and distinctive approach to the recent evolution of popular dissent. SMASH : Using Market Shaping to Design New Strategies for Innovation, Value Creation, and Growth Suvi Nenonen & Kaj Storbacka Emerald Publishing Limited, Emerald Publishing, Bingley, 2018
Stunningly, strategy has never adequately defined one of its central institutions, the market. Old playbooks got away with a hodgepodge of assertions, assumptions and approximations.   But the undeniable complexity of modern markets confronts us with the truth. Markets are elaborate, evolving ecosystems – think biology, not machinery. Today, strategy must embrace complexity or die. Recognizing markets as complex adaptive systems spells strategic implications. Notably, as markets are partly socially constructed, they can be reconstructed. And while they cannot be predicted or controlled, they can be influenced.  Rooted in the richness of market systems, SMASH traces the three main resulting shifts in strategic thinking: (1) from firm focus to context focus, where the relevant context is our definition of the market; (2) from competing and winning to value creation and cooperation; and (3) from analysis, prediction and planning to non-predictive strategizing and experimentation.   Nenonen and Storbacka weave these three strands together into a cohesive strategic framework – Strategies for Market Shaping. Market shaping strategies acknowledge that much of firm performance is explained by the markets where a firm operates. Crucially, strategic choices go beyond market selection, entry and exit; firms should actively seek to adapt the market to the firm instead of the firm to the market, and open up untapped value in the process.   Market shaping is not new. What is new is systematizing an actionable framework for understanding and shaping markets. And the good news: It does not take market power and resources, or intuitive genius, to shape markets to your own benefit. SMASH offers tangible strategies that savvy market shapers of any size can implement, making it a must-read.

Sustainable Negotiation : What Physics Can Teach Us About International Negotiation Eliane Karsaklian Emerald Group Publishing Limited, Emerald Publishing, Bingley, UK, 2017
This new and innovative book introduces a new approach to negotiation, where 'Sustainable Negotiation' replaces the old notion of winning. Instead of 'doing a deal' and walking away, negotiation becomes a continuous process of solving problems and creating relationships with no term limits, which better reflects the real world today. Just as we strive to create a sustainable approach to the natural world, we need to do the same with people if we want to keep working together and building a more harmonious business world. The book borrows from the field of physics to make the case that negotiators need to know what is not visible so they can explain what is visible. This alignment gives negotiators the tools to think differently about what they see, helping them to look beyond traditional negotiation techniques and to develop a forward-thinking and sustainable approach to business. Written by a leading international negotiation expert, Sustainable Negotiation introduces a completely new perspective on international negotiation, providing practical, field-tested examples, experiments and guidance to enable readers to implement sustainable negotiation in the real world

Gender and Contemporary Horror in Television Steven Gerrard & Samantha Holland & ROBERT SHAIL [Gerrard, Steven & Holland, Samantha & SHAIL, ROBERT] Emerald Publishing Limited, Emerald studies in popular culture and gender, First edition, Bingley, UK, 2019
The successful return of horror to our television screens in the post-millennial years, and across a multi-media range of platforms, demonstrates that this previously moribund genre is once again vibrant, challenging and long-lasting. The traditional TV audience of the past would have watched very few horror TV shows, because not many were made. But that has changed. Programme makers have tapped into their public's insatiable need - in these days of terrorism, violence and mayhem - to provide programmes that have high production values, engaging storylines, and plenty of frights and gore. Horror TV offers a safety-valve for its audience, one that enables them to enter into it from the safety of their armchairs. The era of instant access, streaming, downloading and binge-watching whole seasons over a weekend, where fandom has blossomed into a cultural force, clearly shows horror as a vital part of today's TV scheduling. This edited collection investigates the rising popularity of horror-television through deconstructing the gender roles within them via series of case studies including such programmes as Hannibal, American Horror Story, The Walking Dead, Penny Dreadful, Supernatural, The Exorcist and Bates Motel. By using a series of case studies and employing theoretical modes of close analysis, each chapter demonstrates how and why these TV shows are important in reflecting the changing gender roles within modern society.

Emotional Appeals In Advertising Banking Services (emerald Points) EMMANUEL MOGAJI Emerald Group Publishing Limited, Emerald Publishing, [N.p.], 2018
Advertisements are considered as stimuli which consumers will respond to. Banks can develop emotionally appealing advertisements, but they are not guaranteed a positive emotional reaction. The unprecedented turbulence and uncertainty experienced in the banking industry has increased the need to appear more appealing to consumers.Taking into consideration the global financial crisis, the current challenges of competition and open banking, and the looming threat of Brexit, this book explores how UK banks are pulling at consumers'heart strings with appeals that are often filtered through personal ideologies, life experiences and previous exposure to brands. It investigates consumers'perception of this strategy, as well as the wider implications of using emotional appeals in financial services advertising. Based on empirical data and research, this books will prove invaluable to students, researchers and managers alike.

Research in Corporate and Shari'ah Governance in the Muslim World : Theory and Practice Toseef Azid, Ali Abdullah Alnodel, Muhammad Azeem Qureshi GB : Emerald publishing limited, Emerald Publishing, Bingley, UK, 2019
Corporate governance is oriented around the values of fairness, transparency and accountability. The comprehension and measurement of these objectives is subject to the social and economic attributes of the corporate arena. Significant bodies of intellectual work have approached an assessment of corporate governance from perspectives such as differences in management practices, economic advancements, financial management, as well as regional and country constituents. But little is known about the Islamic perspective on the conceptualization, structure and practice of corporate governance.  Research in Corporate and Shari'ah Governance in the Muslim World: Theory and Practice aims to address a critical disciplinary gap between Islamic theory and the practice of the corporate sector in the Muslim World. Adopting a critical approach, the book sheds light on the impact of corporate governance on the economies of the Muslim world. It presents an examination of:   Corporate governance in Islamic financial institutions  The efficiency of the Islamic Jurisprudence system  The common conceptual grounds of corporate structure in the Muslim World   The composition of business leaders in the Muslim World  Using standard tools of analysis, the book presents a logically consistent synthesis of key variables with critical economic reasoning. It extends the conventional scope of corporate governance to form a basis for common understanding of how it operates in the Muslim world. The book will prove useful to those who research, study and practice in this field.

Economic Well-Being and Inequality: Papers from the Fifth ECINEQ Meeting (Research on Economic Inequality) John A. Bishop & Juan Gabriel Rodríguez Emerald Group Publishing Limited, Emerald Publishing, United Kingdom, 2014
Research on Economic Inequality, Volume 22 begins with papers of widespread interest on the impact of the Great Recession. The first paper addresses the impact of'asset meltdown'on the wealth of the US middle class, with disparate racial and ethnic impacts. The second studies poverty and inequality in the US in the aftermath of the Great Recession. The next topic is on the evolution of poverty and inequality in the world. One paper proposes a new methodology to measure global poverty and inequality, while the second analyzes the importance of considering not only the desperately poor but also those just above the subsistence level. Great interest for inequality researchers lies on the use of wealth data. Two approaches to this issue are presented. Firstly, several papers study wealth inequality directly. Secondly, a paper uses annuitized wealth data to augment the income measure of economic well-being. An emerging field in the study of economic well-being is the use of self-reported status and perceptions data. Three papers employ this type of data, investigating happiness inequality, perception of income inequality, and the existence of a'Great Gatsby Curve'for job mobility.
