Each book in the series has been designed with today's young reader in mind. As the words come to life, students will develop a lasting appreciation for great literature. The humor of Mark Twain...the suspense of Edgar Allan Poe...the danger of Jack London...the sensitivity of Katherine Mansfield. The 'Agency of Mapping' in South Asia: Galle-Matar (Sri Lanka), Mumbai (India) and Khulna (Bangladesh) Kelly Shannon Footprint: Delft School of Design Journal, Footprint, 2008
The territories – cities and landscapes – of South Asia are under incredible transformation due to man-made and natural conditions. Globalisation is spatially leaving its imprint as cities and landscapes are progressively being built by an ever-more fragmented, piecemeal and ad-hoc project modus – funded by established and new-found fortunes of national and international developers and lenders, development aid projects and (often corrupt) governments. At the same time, ‘natural’ disasters are increasing in severity and frequency – due to climate change and the flagrant disregard of the environment in the relentless dive to impose imported terms of reference for modernisation and urbanisation. The challenges and strategic importance of realising urban design in South Asia’s contemporary context of borrowed visions, abstract land-use planning and a diminishing political will are, obviously, innumerable. How to qualitatively intervene as an urbanist in such a context? This paper will argue that an understanding of contexts, based on fieldwork, is necessary in order to project feasible urban visions and strategic urban design projects that can make more evident particular sites’ inherent qualities and creatively marry ecological, infrastructural, and urbanisation issues by solutions that cut across multiple scales and sectoral divisions. Interpretative mapping is a first step to transform a territory. An understanding of the context and the reading of sites are necessary in order to create modifications that have logic and relate to the particularities of places and situations. Three scales of mapping (territorial, urban, and tissue) will be presented. The territories/cities investigated are the southwest (Galle-Matara) coast of Sri Lanka, Mumbai, the economic engine of India, and Khulna, the third largest city in Bangladesh. footprint fp#2

On Evil Terry Eagleton Yale University Press, Yale University Press, New Haven, 2010

for Many Enlightened, Liberal-minded Thinkers Today, And For Most On The Political Left, Evil Is An Outmoded Concept. It Smacks Too Much Of Absolute Judgments And Metaphysical Certainties To Suit The Modern Age. In This Witty, Accessible Study, The Prominent Marxist Thinker Terry Eagleton Launches A Surprising Defense Of The Reality Of Evil, Drawing On Literary, Theological, And Psychoanalytic Sources To Suggest That Evil, No Mere Medieval Artifact, Is A Real Phenomenon With Palpable Force In Our Contemporary World.
in A Book That Ranges From St. Augustine To Alcoholism, Thomas Aquinas To Thomas Mann, Shakespeare To The Holocaust, Eagleton Investigates The Frightful Plight Of Those Doomed Souls Who Apparently Destroy For No Reason. In The Process, He Poses A Set Of Intriguing Questions. Is Evil Really A Kind Of Nothingness? Why Should It Appear So Glamorous And Seductive? Why Does Goodness Seem So Boring? Is It Really Possible For Human Beings To Delight In Destruction For No Reason At All?

publishers Weekly

an Engaging If Ultimately Unsatisfactory Argument In Favor Of The Reality Of Evil By One Of Britain's Most Distinguished Marxist Literary Critics. Analyzing Some Of Western Literature's Major Pronouncements On Evil From Thomas Aquinas To William Golding, Eagleton (reason, Faith And Revolution) Pieces Together What He Sees As The Defining Features Of Evil In A Rather Unsystematic Way, Before Grounding His Own Vision Of Evil In Freud's Notion Of The Death Drive, Describing Evildoers As Suffering From “an Unbearable Sense Of Non-being” Which Must “be Taken Out On The Other.” Despite Its Undeniably Enjoyable Verve And Wit, The Book's Claims Are Undermined By A Rather Arbitrary Use Of Source Material As Well As A Belated And Inadequate Articulation Of Its Major Theoretical Claim. Muddy Talk About Different Levels Of Evil And An Undeveloped But Evidently Important Distinction Between Wickedness And Evil Suggest That The Author's Notions On The Topic Would Be Better Served By A Larger, More Sustained Work. Nonetheless, As An Attempt To Take Seriously The Reality Of Extreme Wrongdoing Without Recourse To Either Religiously Grounded Certitudes Or A Total Sociological Determinism, It Offers A Promising Alternative. The ghost map : the story of London's most terrifying epidemic--and how it changed science, cities, and the modern world Johnson, Steven Penguin Books, Limited; Penguin, First Edition Thus, 2008-01-31
In Ghost Map Steven Johnson tells the story of the terrifying cholera epidemic that engulfed London in 1854, and the two unlikely heroes anaesthetist Doctor John Snow and affable clergyman Reverend Henry Whitehead who defeated the disease through a combination of local knowledge, scientific research and map-making. In telling their extraordinary story, Johnson also explores a whole world of ideas and connections, from urban terror to microbes, ecosystems to the Great Stink, cultural phenomena to street life. Re-creating a London full of dirt, dust heaps, slaughterhouses and scavengers, Ghost Map is about how huge populations live together, how cities can kill and how they can save us.

Human Security and Migration in Europe's Southern Borders (Politics of Citizenship and Migration) Susana Ferreira Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, Cham, 2018
This book examines the management of migratory flows in the Mediterranean within an international security perspective. The intense migratory flows registered during the year 2015 and the tragedies in the Mediterranean Sea have tested the mechanisms of the Union’s immigration and asylum policies and its ability to respond to humanitarian crises. Moreover, these flows of varying intensities and geographies represent a threat to the internal security of the EU and its member states. By using Spain and Italy as case studies, the author theorizes that the EU, given its inability to adopt and implement a common policy to effectively manage migratory flows on its Southern border, uses a deterrence strategy based on minimum common denominators. ** Review “Positioned at the intersection between security and international studies, this book examines one of the most challenging issues in contemporary Europe: the protection vs. restriction dilemma at the heart of international migration governance. This excellent and timely analysis advocates adopting minimum standards regarding irregular migration that will help protect the lives (and rights) of migrants.” (Ana López-Sala, Institute of Economics, Geography and Demography, The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), Spain) “This is a very timely book on a highly relevant topic which provides a useful analysis and a broad overview of the complex institutional settings of border management in Italy and Spain.” (Cláudia Finotelli, Complutense University of Madrid, Spain) Susana Ferreira is Researcher at the Portuguese Institute of International Relations (IPRI), NOVA University of Lisbon, Portugal, and the Research Centre on Security and Defense, Portuguese Military University Institute (CISDIUM).

iCloud for Developers: Automatically Sync Your iOS Data, Everywhere, All the Time (The Pragmatic Programmers) Rocchi, Cesare The Pragmatic Programmers; Pragmatic Bookshelf, Pragmatic programmers, Dallas, Texas, 2013
Get up-to-date fast on the techniques you need get your applications iCloud-ready. With Apple's iCloud servers now available to developers, there's every reason to make synchronization a core feature of your product. You'll learn how to iCloud-enable the data formats you're most likely to use in an iOS application: key-value data, document-based data, and relational data. Using a simple grocery list application as an example, you'll find out how to configure any application to make the most of iCloud's capabilities. Your app's users want their application data to be in sync as they switch from one device to another. Guided by iOS expert Cesare Rocchi, you'll start by learning how to configure an app and its resources for iCloud. Then, after a quick introduction to iCloud-supported data types, you'll work on using the simplest: key-value data. Next, you'll find out how to get your document-based data (including media files), and even relational data working with iCloud. As you learn each new technique, you'll use it to synchronize yet another module of the book's sample app, Grocery, a simple shopping list that can be shared between two or more devices. You'll learn how to handle the kinds of conflicts likely to occur when you build apps that keep themselves in sync across phones and tablets, as well as how to deal with the notifications used by iCloud to broadcast changes as they occur. As devices proliferate, synchronization is more important than ever. When you finish this book, you'll know how to make it a part of your own applications. What You Need: You should have Xcode 4.6.2 and iOS SDK 6.0 installed on your workstation. To write apps that interact with iCloud, you need to be a registered Apple developer. To test the synchronization of iCloud applications that you write, you'll need two iOS devices (either of which can be an iPhone, iPod, or iPad). **

Architecture Words 2: Anti-Object Kengo Kuma Architectural Association Publications, Architecture words, London, 2013
Kengo Kuma is one of Japan’s most prominent architects, with a growing international practice. His projects have been widely praised for their beauty, clarity and attention to detail. One of the key issues in the architecture of Kengo Kuma is the way it responds to its setting. Unlike many important figures of Western modernism, who have promoted the idea of the isolated architectural object, his work attempts to have a tight fight with its immediate context. In Anti-Object Kuma traces in philosophical terms his approach to architecture, revealing influences from Kant and Bruno Taut to the Japanese tradition of ‘weaker’ buildings characterised by their use of natural light and natural materials. Architecture Words is a series of texts and important essays on architecture written by architects, critics and scholars. Like many aspects of everyday life, contemporary architectural culture is dominated by an endless production and consumption of images, graphics and information. Rather than mirror this larger force, this series of small books seeks to deflect it by means of direct language, concise editing and beautiful, legible graphic design. Each volume in the series offers the reader texts that distil important larger issues and problems, and communicate architectural ideas; not only the ideas contained within each volume, but also the enduring power of written ideas more generally to challenge and change the way all architects think. architecture words dissolution Kengo anti-object Kuma AA AA,Kuma,anti-object,Kengo,dissolution,architecture,words

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/finished/Mourning Ruby - Helen Dunmore.epub
Mourning Ruby Helen Dunmore Berkley Publishing Group, 2003
From Publishers Weekly When Rebecca, the narrator of most of Dunmore's fine, almost unbearably sad eighth novel (after 2003's Ice Cream), shares a flat with Joe in London, she begins to enjoy the pleasures of friendship and family for the first time in her life: she was abandoned as a baby and adopted by a couple remarkably unsuitable for parenting. Joe, a historian interested in Stalin, introduces her to simple pleasures and shows her that loneliness need not be permanent. And it's through Joe that she meets Adam, a neonatologist who becomes her husband and the father of their daughter, Ruby ("For the first time, I was tied to someone by blood"). Given the book's title, Ruby's death is no surprise (though it's still heartbreaking without being melodramatic), and Dunmore plumbs the consequences of loss: How does one mourn, and then accept, the unacceptable? Numbed by Ruby's death, Rebecca drifts away from Adam, finding diversion in a job as an assistant to a hotelier, Mr. Damiano; Adam buries himself in his work with premature babies. Ambitiously, Dunmore complements this tragic narrative with two other stories, one autobiographical, told by Mr. Damiano, about growing up in a circus where his parents were trapeze artists, and one told by Joe, a work of fiction set during WWI about a man and a woman who could be his and Rebecca's ancestors. Rebecca's own story isn't told linearly, so these narrative asides aren't as distracting as they sound. And they are critical to the author's main theme: that narrative is a key to understanding and to acceptance. This is that rare novel, an intensely emotional, fiercely intelligent story, fiction with the power to offer redemption. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From Booklist Starred Review When Rebecca's and Adam's daughter, Ruby, dies in a playground accident, their lives are forever changed. In Dunmore's elegant hands, such a simple and sorrowful synopsis is transformed into an elegiac tale of unbearable suffering and unexpected redemption as lyrical and lush as life itself. As an abandoned infant and unwanted adoptee, Rebecca spun romantic stories of her past to compensate for the meager facts of her existence. Only in her role as Ruby's mother did she find her true identity, and when that vanishes, it falls to her old friend, Joe, a writer, and her enigmatic boss, Mr. Damiano, to present her with new stories that will allow her to once more create a life without Ruby. Dunmore portrays Rebecca's palpable grief with a poignant and powerful empathy, an anguish so strong that it envelops the reader in its enormity. Yet Rebecca's story is one to be savored, one whose beauty is haunting and whose message is hopeful. Told with abundant grace and exquisite sensitivity, this is a book to fall in love with, to hold in your heart like a cherished memory. Carol Haggas Copyright © American Library Association. upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/Modernism and Food Studies_ Pol - Jessica Martell.pdf
Modernism and food studies : politics, aesthetics, and the avant-garde Jessica Martell; Adam Fajardo; Philip Keel Geheber University Press of Florida, Gainesville, Tallahassee, Tampa, Boca Raton, Pensacola, Orlando, Miami, Jacksonville, Ft. Myers, Sarasota, 2019
Transnational in scope, this much-needed volume explores how modernist writers and artists address and critique the dramatic changes to food systems that took place in the early twentieth century. During this period, small farms were being replaced with industrial agriculture, political upheavals exacerbated food scarcity in many countries, and globalization opened up new modes of distributing culinary commodities. Looking at a unique variety of art forms by authors, painters, filmmakers, and chefs from Ireland, Italy, France, the United States, India, the former Soviet Union, and New Zealand, contributors draw attention to modernist representations of food, from production to distribution and consumption. They consider Oscar Wilde’s aestheticization of food, Katherine Mansfield’s use of eggs as a feminist symbol, Langston Hughes’s use of chocolate as a redemptive metaphor for blackness, hospitality in William Faulkner’s Sanctuary , Ernest Hemingway’s struggles with gender and sexuality as expressed through food and culinary objects, Futurist cuisine, avant-garde cookbooks, and the impact of national famines on the work of James Joyce, Viktor Shklovsky, and Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay. Less celebrated topics of putrefaction and waste are analyzed in discussions of food as both a technology of control and a tool for resistance. The diverse themes and methodologies assembled here underscore the importance of food studies not only for the literary and visual arts but also for social transformation. The cultural work around food, the editors argue, determines what is produced, who has access to it, and what can or will change. A milestone volume, this collection uncovers new links between seemingly disparate spaces, cultures, and artistic media and demystifies the connection between modernist aesthetics and the emerging food cultures of a globalizing world. Department Stores and the Black Freedom Movement: Workers, Consumers, and Civil Rights from the 1930s to the 1980s (The John Hope Franklin Series in African American History and Culture) Traci Parker The University of North Carolina Press, University of North Carolina Press, Chapel Hill, 2019
In this book, Traci Parker examines the movement to racially integrate white-collar work and consumption in American department stores, and broadens our understanding of historical transformations in African American class and labor formation. Built on the goals, organization, and momentum of earlier struggles for justice, the department store movement channeled the power of store workers and consumers to promote black freedom in the mid-twentieth century. Sponsoring lunch counter sit-ins and protests in the 1950s and 1960s, and challenging discrimination in the courts in the 1970s, this movement ended in the early 1980s with the conclusion of the Sears, Roebuck, and Co. affirmative action cases and the transformation and consolidation of American department stores. In documenting the experiences of African American workers and consumers during this era, Parker highlights the department store as a key site for the inception of a modern black middle class, and demonstrates the ways that both work and consumption were battlegrounds for civil rights. ** Review This is a powerful and largely untold story. Parker masterfully captures the distinct yet intertwined fates of worker and consumer rights.--Victoria W. Wolcott, State University of New York at Buffalo In this fascinating book, Traci Parker convinces us that the department store of the twentieth century was far from a frivolous place. Rather it was a site as central to African American workers' and consumers' struggle for equality as the better-known factory floor and voting booth.--Lizabeth Cohen, Harvard University Traci Parker's Department Stores and the Black Freedom Movement is a highly readable account of African American struggles to secure equal access to the palaces of consumption that once dominated American retail. While pre–civil rights era department stores were theoretically open to all, most offered blacks few employment opportunities, and unequal service. Parker's book chronicles both this discrimination and black resistance to it, offering an engrossing account of the department store movement that extends from the 'Don't Buy Where You Can't Work Campaigns' of the 1920s to the sit-ins of the 1960s.--Mia Bay, coeditor of Race and Retail: Consumption Across the Color Line Traci Parker's meticulously researched book offers us a brilliant analysis of department stores as sites of black resistance to discrimination in both work and leisure. This is a welcome addition to the field of African American history, and, more broadly, the history of capitalism.--Vicki Howard, author of From Main Street to Mall: The Rise and Fall of the American Department Store About the Author Traci Parker is assistant professor of Afro-American studies at University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Turkish National Identity And Its Outsiders: Memories Of State Violence In Dersim (routledge Advances In Sociology) Ozlem Goner Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), New York, 2017
This book examines the ways in which states and nations are constructed and legitimated through defining and managing outsiders. Focusing on Turkey and the municipality of Dersim – a region that has historically combined different outsider identities, including Armenian, Kurdish, and Alevi identities – the author explores the remembering, transformation and mobilisation of everyday relations of power and the manner in which relationships with the state shape both outsider identities and the conception of the nation itself. Together with a discussion of the recent decade in which the history, identity, and nature of Dersim have been central to various social and political organisations, the author concentrates on three defining periods of state-outsider relationships – the massacre and the following displacements in Dersim known as ‘1938’; the growth of capitalism in Turkey and the leftist movements in Dersim between World War II and the coup d’état of 1980; and the rise of the PKK and the ‘state of exception’ in Dersim in the 1990s – to show how outsiders came to be defined as ‘exceptions to the law’ and how they were managed in different periods. Drawing on archival methods, field research, in-depth and multiple-session interviews and focus groups with three consecutive generations, this book offers a historical understanding of relationships of power and struggle as they are actualised and challenged at particular localities and shaped through the making of outsiderness. As such, it will be of interest to scholars of sociology, anthropology and political science, as well as historians. ** About the Author Ozlem Goner is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the College of Staten Island, City University of New York (CUNY). She earned degrees in Political Science and Sociology from Bogazici University, Turkey and her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Her research interests focus on political sociology, memory, race and ethnicity, social movements, sociology of place and environment, qualitative methods, and classical, post-structural, postcolonial and feminist theory. Her work on memory and historicity; neoliberalism, environment and identity; and outsider identities in Turkey has been published in academic journals and edited volumes.

Reconstructing Conservatism?: The Conservative Party in Opposition, 19972010 (New Perspectives on the Right, 7) Richard Hayton Manchester University Press ; Distributed in the U.S. exclusively by Palgrave Macmillan, Manchester University Press, Manchester, 2012
Why did it take the Conservative Party so long to recover power? After the landslide defeat in 1997, why was it so slow to adapt, reposition itself and rebuild its support? How did the party leadership seek to reconstruct Conservatism and modernise its electoral appeal? Of vital interest to anyone interested in British politics, this highly readable book addresses these questions through a contextualised assessment of Conservative Party politics between 1997 and 2010. It traces debates over strategy amongst the party elite and scrutinises the actions of the leadership. It also considers four particular dilemmas for contemporary Conservatism: European integration; national identity and the ‘English Question'; social liberalism versus social authoritarianism; and the problems posed by a neo-liberal political economy. The book argues that the ideological legacy of Thatcherism played a central role in framing and shaping these intraparty debates, and that an appreciation of this is vital for explaining the nature and limits of the Conservatives'renewal under Cameron.

Commemorating Race and Empire in the First World War Centenary Ben Wellings; Shanti Sumartojo Provence University Press / Liverpool University Press, Liverpool University Press / Books, Aix-en-Provence, 2018
First World War commemoration in Europe has been framed as a moment of national trial and as a collective European tragedy. But the 'Great War for Civilisation' was more than just a European conflict. It was in fact a global war, a clash of empires that began a process of nationalist agitation against imperial polities and the racisms that underpinned them in Asia, Africa and beyond. Despite the global context of Centenary commemorative activity these events remain framed by national and state imaginaries and ones in which the ideas about nation, race and imperialism that animated and dominated men and women during the Great War sit uncomfortably with modern sensibilities. By drawing on original archival research, translations from French and Mandarin into English and by employing multidisciplinary conceptual frames of analysis this exciting and innovative volume explores how race and empire, and racism and imperialism, were commemorated or forgotten during the First World War Centenary. **

Edward VIII (Penguin Monarchs) : the Uncrowned King Brendon, Piers;Windsor, Edward Penguin Books, Limited, Penguin monarchs, London, 2016
'After my death,' George V said of his eldest son and heir, 'the boy will ruin himself within twelve months.' The forecast proved uncannily accurate. Edward VIII came to the throne in January 1936, provoked a constitutional crisis by his determination to marry the American divorcée Wallis Simpson, and abdicated in December. He was never crowned king. In choosing the woman he loved over his royal birthright, Edward shook the monarchy to its foundations. Given the new title 'Duke of Windsor' and essentially sent into exile, he remained a visible skeleton in the royal cupboard until his death in 1972 and he haunts the house of Windsor to this day. Drawing on unpublished material, notably correspondence with his most loyal (though much tried) supporter Winston Churchill, Piers Brendon's superb biography traces Edward's tumultuous public and private life from bright young prince to troubled sovereign, from wartime colonial governor to sad but glittering expatriate. With pace and panache, it cuts through the myths that still surround this most controversial of modern British monarchs. ** About the Author Piers Brendon is the author of over a dozen books, among them The Dark Valley: A Panorama of the 1930s and The Decline and Fall of the British Empire. Formerly Keeper of the Churchill Archives Centre, he is a Fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

Body: A Biblical Spirituality for the Whole Person : a Biblical Spirituality for the Whole Person Paula Gooder Fortress Press (NBN), National Book Network, Minneapolis, 2016
The word spirituality is notoriously difficult to define. It is often used in a vague way to refer to the inner relationship between the self and God. The implication is that people only relate to God with their “inner” being (soul/spirit) and not with any other part of who they are. There is a lurking influence of Neoplatonism within Christian thinking that tends to assume that the material is bad and the spiritual good, that there is a gaping hole between our inner and our outer selves and that the proper location of devotion is our inner being. There is a further assumption that, especially in the writings of Paul, the soul is to be placed in the “good” category while opposite it, in the “bad” category, is the body—leaving the question of what is meant by heart and mind largely ignored. Paula Gooder here explores the meaning of six key concepts in the Bible, especially in the writings of Paul, before moving on to explore what Paul intended by the contrasts he drew, and what implications this all has for the way we think and speak about our spirituality today. ** About the Author PAULA GOODER is a freelance writer and lecturer in Biblical studies, a Reader in the Church of England, and a lay member of the General Synod. She is also a Trustee of SPCK and the Saltley Trust and an honorary Canon Theologian at Birmingham and Guildford Cathedrals. Readers will learn why prescribing antipsychotics is often a difficult decision due to the inherent risks of giving these medications to different types of patients and appreciate how mental health laws impact psychiatrists'prescribing practices.

Our Germans : Project Paperclip and the National Security State Brian E. Crim Johns Hopkins University Press, Johns Hopkins University Press, Baltimore, 2017
A gripping history of one of the United States'most controversial Cold War intelligence operations.Project Paperclip brought hundreds of German scientists and engineers, including aerospace engineer Wernher von Braun, to the United States in the first decade after World War II. More than the freighters full of equipment or the documents recovered from caves and hastily abandoned warehouses, the German brains who designed and built the V-2 rocket and other'wonder weapons'for the Third Reich proved invaluable to America's emerging military-industrial complex. Whether they remained under military employment, transitioned to civilian agencies like NASA, or sought more lucrative careers with corporations flush with government contracts, German specialists recruited into the Paperclip program assumed enormously influential positions within the labyrinthine national security state. Drawing on recently declassified documents from intelligence agencies, the Department of Defense, the FBI, and the State Department, Brian E. Crim's Our Germans examines the process of integrating German scientists into a national security state dominated by the armed services and defense industries. Crim explains how the Joint Intelligence Objectives Agency enticed targeted scientists, whitewashed the records of Nazis and war criminals, and deceived government agencies about the content of security investigations. Exploring the vicious bureaucratic rivalries that erupted over the wisdom, efficacy, and morality of pursuing Paperclip, Our Germans reveals how some Paperclip proponents and scientists influenced the perception of the rival Soviet threat by volunteering inflated estimates of Russian intentions and technical capabilities. As it describes the project's embattled legacy, Our Germans reflects on the myriad ways that Paperclip has been remembered in culture and national memory. As this engaging book demonstrates, whether characterized as an expedient Cold War program born from military necessity or a dishonorable episode, the project ultimately reflects American ambivalence about the military-industrial complex and the viability of an'ends justifies the means'solution to external threats.

Body: A Biblical Spirituality for the Whole Person : a Biblical Spirituality for the Whole Person Paula Gooder Fortress Press, National Book Network, Minneapolis, 2016
The Poetry of William Carlos Williams of Rutherford Wendell Berry Counterpoint Press, 2011;2013
Acclaimed essayist and poet Wendell Berry was born and has always lived in a “provincial” part of the country without an established literary culture. In an effort to adapt his poetry to his place of Henry County, Kentucky, Berry discovered an enduringly useful example in the work of William Carlos Williams. In Williams’ commitment to his place of Rutherford, New Jersey, Berry found an inspiration that inevitably influenced the direction of his own writing. Both men would go on to establish themselves as respected American poets, and here Berry sets forth his understanding of that evolution for Williams, who in the course of his local membership and service, became a poet indispensable to us all. ** From Booklist It isn’t surprising that farmer-poet Berry reports ever-increasing affinity with physician-poet Williams, the single first-generation American modernist who took his home ground and people as his prime subject and audience respectively and, so doing, spoke to the world. He is indisputably Berry’s great model, though Berry is a rural, Williams an urban, poet, as Berry verifies in his thorough discussion of Williams’ poetic practice. Williams formulated his own poetics in his poetry, and through his conceptions of the imagination and its work (which Berry saliently compares to Coleridge’s much more famous ones), he honored the great modernist injunction to “make it new”; that is, Berry understands Williams to be saying, to participate in the original work of creation. Generously quoting many of Williams’ best lines, tenderly confessing when he doesn’t understand Williams (e.g., Williams’ elusive “variable foot”), and referring to his own life and work to clarify what he thinks about Williams, Berry produces a work of aesthetics more than evaluation, of love more than critique. --Ray Olson Review Praise for The Poetry of William Carlos Williams "Generously quoting many of Williams’ best lines, tenderly confessing when he doesn’t understand Williams (e.g., Williams’ elusive “variable foot”), and referring to his own life and work to clarify what he thinks about Williams, Berry produces a work of aesthetics more than evaluation, of love more than critique." — Booklist "Berry's superb study reminds us that Williams remains our contemporary not only for the lively cadences and fresh imagery that animate his poems, but for the ethical imperative of his example: to know ourselves as creatures of a particular place and, through that grounded knowledge, to develop the arts that will enable us to live in it over the long haul." — The Sewanee Review Praise for Wendell Berry "Generously quoting many of Williams’ best lines, tenderly confessing when he doesn’t understand Williams (e.g., Williams’ elusive “variable foot”), and referring to his own life and work to clarify what he thinks about Williams, Berry produces a work of aesthetics more than evaluation, of love more than critique." — Booklist “He can be said to have returned American poetry to a Wordsworthian clarity of purpose.” — The New York Times Book Review “Berry’s nonfiction soars because its language is guided by thrift and propriety, a literary illustration of just the values that his words espouse.” — San Francisco Chronicle
