United States Reconstruction across the Americas (Frontiers of the American South) William A. Link University Press of Florida, University Press of Florida, Gainesville, 2019
Historians have examined the American Civil War and its aftermath for more than a century, yet little work has situated this important era in a global context. Contributors to this volume broaden the scope of Reconstruction by viewing it not as an insular process but as an international phenomenon. Here, three leading international scholars explore how emancipation, nationhood and nationalism, and the spread of market capitalism—issues central to the period in the United States—were interwoven with global patterns of political, social, and economic change. Rafael Marquese explores the integrated trajectories of slavery in the United States and Brazil, tracing the connections, interactions, and transformations of the coffee and cotton economies in both countries. Don Doyle discusses how Secretary of State William Seward eliminated a possible Confederate revival and hostile European presence supported by Mexico's Maximilian regime. Edward Rugemer reconsiders how Jamaica's Morant Bay Rebellion influenced Reconstruction by demonstrating that emancipation without citizenship, political rights, or economic opportunities can have violent consequences. This volume suggests new discussions about how the Civil War reshaped the United States's relationship to the world and how large-scale international developments influenced the country's transition from slavery to freedom. A volume in the series Frontiers of the American South, edited by William A. Link Contributors: William A. Link | Don H. Doyle | Rafael Marquese | Edward Rugemer

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/The Memory Illusion_ Remembering, Forgetti - Julia Shaw.epub
The memory illusion : remembering, forgetting, and the science of false memory Julia Shaw, (Professor) Penguin Random House, Illustrated, 2016
Think you have a good memory? Think again. Memories are our most cherished possessions. We rely on them every day of our lives. They make us who we are. And yet the truth is they are far from being the accurate record of the past we like to think they are. True, we can all admit to having suffered occasional memory lapses, such as entering a room and immediately forgetting why, or suddenly being unable to recall the name of someone we've met dozens of times. But what if our minds have the potential for more profound errors, that enable the manipulation or even outright fabrication of our memories? In The Memory Illusion, forensic psychologist and memory expert Dr Julia Shaw uses the latest research to show the astonishing variety of ways in which our brains can indeed be led astray. She shows why we can sometimes misappropriate other people's memories, subsequently believing them to be our own. She explains how police officers can imprison an innocent man for life on the basis of many denials and just one confession. She demonstrates the way radically false memories can be deliberately implanted, leading people to believe they had tea with Prince Charles, or committed crimes that never happened. And she reveals how, in spite of all this, we can improve our memory through simple awareness of its fallibility. Fascinating and unnerving in equal measure, The Memory Illusion offers a unique insight into the human brain, challenging you to question how much you can ever truly know about yourself.

Civilization and Its Discontents (Penguin Modern Classics) Sigmund Freud; David McLintock; Leo Bersani; Adam Phillips Penguin Books, Limited, Penguin Modern Classics, London, 2014
In what remains one of his most seminal papers, Freud considers the incompatibility of civilisation and individual happiness, and the tensions between the claims of society and the individual. We all know that living in civilised groups means sacrificing a degree of personal interest, but couldn't you argue that it in fact creates the conditions for our happiness? Freud explores the arguments and counter-arguments surrounding this proposition, focusing on what he perceives to be one of society's greatest dangers; 'civilised' sexual morality. After all, doesn't repression of sexuality deeply affect people and compromise their chances of happiness? ** Review “Newly designed in a uniform format, each new paperback in the Standard Edition opens with a biographical essay on Freud's life and work—along with a note on the individual volume” ( Peter Gay, Sterling Professor of History at Yale ) Language Notes Text: English (translation) Original Language: German

Politics and Apocalypse (Studies in Violence, Mimesis & Culture) Robert Hamerton-Kelly; Robert Hamerton-Kelly Michigan State University Press, Michigan State University Press, East Lansing, 2007
Apocalypse. To most, the word signifies destruction, death, the end of the world, but the literal definition is "revelation" or "unveiling," the basis from which renowned theologian René Girard builds his own view of Biblical apocalypse. Properly understood, Girard explains, Biblical apocalypse has nothing to do with a wrathful or vengeful God punishing his unworthy children, and everything to do with a foretelling of what future humans are making for themselves now that they have devised the instruments of global self-destruction. In this volume, some of the major thinkers about the interpretation of politics and religion— including Eric Voegelin, Leo Strauss, and Carl Schmitt— are scrutinized by some of today's most qualified scholars, all of whom are thoroughly versed in Girard’s groundbreaking work. Including an important new essay by Girard, this volume enters into a philosophical debate that challenges the bona fides of philosophy itself by examining three supremely important philosopher of the twentieth century. It asks how we might think about politics now that the attacks of 9/11 have shifted our intellectual foundations and what the outbreak of rabid religion might signify for international politics. **

The decisionist imagination : sovereignty, social science, and democracy in the 20th century Daniel Bessner; Nicolas Guilhot Berghahn Books, Incorporated, Berghahn Books, New York, 2019
In the decades following World War II, the science of decision-making moved from the periphery to the center of transatlantic thought. The Decisionist Imagination explores how “decisionism” emerged from its origins in prewar political theory to become an object of intense social scientific inquiry in the new intellectual and institutional landscapes of the postwar era. By bringing together scholars from a wide variety of disciplines, this volume illuminates how theories of decision shaped numerous techno-scientific aspects of modern governance—helping to explain, in short, how we arrived at where we are today. ** Review “ The Decisionist Imagination expertly outlines the development of a key component of social scientific thought, placing it into historical context across the whole of the twentieth century, providing a systematic analysis and evaluation of a core concept present in virtually all academic fields.” • Inderjeet Parmar , City, University of London About the Author Daniel Bessner  is the Anne H. H. and Kenneth B. Pyle Assistant Professor in American Foreign Policy in the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. He is the author of  Democracy in Exile: Hans Speier and the Rise of the Defense Intellectual (Cornell University Press, 2018).

War in Worcester: Youth and the Apartheid State (Forms of Living) Pamela Reynolds Fordham University Press, Forms of living, Forms of living, 1st ed., New York, New York State, 2012
The South African government gave no quarter to young people who joined the struggle against the apartheid state; indeed, it targeted them. Security forces meted out cruel treatment to youth who rebelled, incarcerated even the very young under dreadful conditions, and used torture frequently, sometimes over long periods of time. Little is known, however, from the perspective of young fighters themselves about the efforts they made to sustain the momentum of struggle, how that affected and was affected by their other social bonds, and what they achieved in terms of growth and paid in terms of harm. War in Worcester combines a study of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC)'s findings on the stand taken by South African youth with extended fieldwork undertaken with fourteen young men who, starting in their schooldays, were involved in the struggle in a small town in the Western Cape. Filling a gap in the ethnographic analysis of the role of youth in armed conflict, the book describes, from the perspective of the young fighters themselves, the tactics that young local leaders used and how the state retaliated, young peoples' experiences of pain and loss, the effect on fighters of the extensive use of informers by the state as a weapon of war, and the search for an ethic of survival. The testimony of these young fighters reveals some limitations of the processes used by the TRC in its search to document the truth. War in Worcester problematizes the use of the term "victim" for the political engagement of young people and calls for attention to patterns of documenting the past and thus to the nature of the archive in recording the character of political forces and the uses of violence. It encourages a fresh analysis of the kinds of revolt being enacted by the young elsewhere in the world, such as North Africa and the Middle East. ** Review "Throughout the text there is a tone of concern and care toward the participants, the young men who courageously took on the horrors of the apartheid state."-DON FOSTER, University of Cape Town "Reynolds interviews 14 South African men who experienced violence and torture in the struggle against apartheid, in order to shed light on the fates of young people in South Africa who fought in the 1980s. Three of the men interviewed also gave testimony at the Boland Human Rights Violation Hearings of June 1996. In addition to presenting the men's recollections and reflections on the time period, Reynolds also offers a critique of the omission of young people's voices in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's report and questions how the TRC handled questions of activism and victimhood." -Book News Inc "Dramatizing the role of children and recalling the place of violence in the anti-apartheid struggle, Pamela Reynolds also offers luminous evidence of imfobe -- the youthful sense that her protagonists generated both to guide and to understand their acts. For an age that honors only non-violent struggle in the face of oppression, and views youth solely as victims when it acknowledges their distinctive experience at all, this book is doubly thought-provoking." -Samuel Moyn, Columbia University, author of The Last Utopia: Human Rights in History "This devastating yet methodologically restrained account of recollection elicited from black South Africans tortured as children or youth under apartheid, and of the failures of the restitution that followed, achieves an exceptional precision of attention and thought. In attending to the repeated failure of a relation of care for the child, Reynolds reconceives the task of the scholar in relation to government and to the long-term consequences of harm done, and offers powerful reflections on friendship and betrayal, on norms and ethics, and on struggle, its neutralization, and the question of a contemporary politics." -Lawrence Cohen, University of California, Berkeley "This is an extra-ordinary book that goes below the surface of master stories of the struggle against the cruel regime through which apartheid was sustained for so long in South Africa. Writing in collaboration with the young who see themselves as engaged in a national struggle for liberation rather than as victims, Pamela Reynolds gives us a book that methodologically innovative, theoretically sophisticated yet able to communicate the everyday realities of those who traversed many layers of relationship with swirling emotions of fidelity, betrayal, joy and grief. This book is indeed a treasure unmatched in its simplicity and integrity." -Veena Das, Johns Hopkins University "Reynolds' work with the 14 men has enabled her to examine at close hand the manner in which the instruments of repression and state terror tore into the fabric of one community, its families and its young activists--most of whom were still in school during the last years of the apartheid period." -Andrew Dawes, University of Cape Town "'War in Worcester' presents the record of struggle in a small town and a description of relationships among young men who examine their experiences of activism retrospectively and microscopically." -African Studies Review "Reynolds is arguably the most influential writer on youth and political activism today, and she has written a book that does an enormous amount of work as an archival resource. . ." -Journal of Southern African Studies About the Author PAMELA REYNOLDS is Professor Emerita, Johns Hopkins University, and Honorary Professor, University of Cape Town. Her books include Growing Up in a Divided Society: The Contexts of Childhood in South Africa , Childhood in Crossroads: Cognition and Society in South Africa , Dance Civet Cat: Child Labour in the Zambezi Valley , and Traditional Healers and Childhood in Zimbabwe .

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/Forgotten Disease_ Illnesses Tr - Hilary A. Smith.pdf
Forgotten Disease: Illnesses Transformed in Chinese Medicine (Studies of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University) Smith, Hilary A. Stanford University Press, Studies of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University, Studies of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University, California, 2017
Around the turn of the twentieth century, disorders that Chinese physicians had been writing about for over a millennium acquired new identities in Western medicine―sudden turmoil became cholera; flowers of heaven became smallpox; and foot qi became beriberi. Historians have tended to present these new identities as revelations, overlooking evidence that challenges Western ideas about these conditions. In Forgotten Disease , Hilary A. Smith argues that, by privileging nineteenth century sources, we misrepresent what traditional Chinese doctors were seeing and doing, therefore unfairly viewing their medicine as inferior. Drawing on a wide array of sources, ranging from early Chinese classics to modern scientific research, Smith traces the history of one representative case, foot qi, from the fourth century to the present day. She examines the shifting meanings of disease over time, showing that each transformation reflects the social, political, intellectual, and economic environment. The breathtaking scope of this story offers insights into the world of early Chinese doctors and how their ideas about health, illness, and the body were developing far before the advent of modern medicine. Smith highlights the fact that modern conceptions of these ancient diseases create the impression that the West saved the Chinese from age-old afflictions, when the reality is that many prominent diseases in China were actually brought over as a result of imperialism. She invites the reader to reimagine a history of Chinese medicine that celebrates its complexity and nuance, rather than uncritically disdaining this dynamic form of healing. **

Also, as of March 1, 2013, due to a lack of participation by those who claim to believe in the guilt of Lee Harvey Oswald,  the author has decided to sweeten the pot, and the amount of the JFK Challenge (discussed below) has been more than doubled from the amount discussed in the book, and will increase by $5000 a month until further notice. In the last 49 years, hundreds of books have been written on the Kennedy assassination. But there is only one of them -- this one -- which comes backed with a better-than-a-moneyback guarantee: prove the conclusions of this book wrong before a jury of 12 arbitrators, and you get $65,000 . Fail to prove it, and you pay the author nothing. As a consequence of this unique offer, you do not even need to read this book to know that it proves, conclusively, that there is absolutely no case against Lee Harvey Oswald. You know this because out of the thousands of people who have read and downloaded this book, not one of them have dared to take The JFK Challenge , including numerous notable proponents of the lone assassin theory, such as Bill O'Reilly, Vincent Bugliosi, Stephen King, John McAdams, and Gerald Posner. Moreover, not one of the hundreds of people on Kennedy assassination Internet websites have dared take the offer either. Just what is the evidence in this book that is so devastating? The answer is simple: merely the evidence of the case, but put together in novel and at times startling ways. Read this book, and you will find out why the case against Oswald is a complete fantasy, and why in fact, after reading this book, no sane person could ever believe that Lee Harvey Oswald could have been found guilty in a court of law. Get ready for the truth, America: there is not one person in the United States, or even the planet, who truly believes that Lee Harvey Oswald would have been convicted of the assassination of President Kennedy. This is especially true because, when all the evidence is analyzed, it becomes painfully apparent that Oswald was framed . The question now is, what do we do about it ? Body modern : Fritz Kahn, scientific illustration, and the homuncular subject Sappol, Michael; University Of Minnesota Press, Illustrated, 2017
A poster first printed in Germany in 1926 depicts the human body as a factory populated by tiny workers doing industrial tasks. Devised by Fritz Kahn (1888–1968), a German-Jewish physician and popular science writer, “Der Mensch als Industriepalast” (or “Man as Industrial Palace”) achieved international fame and was reprinted, in various languages and versions, all over the world. It was a new kind of image—an illustration that was conceptual and scientific, a visual explanation of how things work—and Kahn built a career of this new genre. In collaboration with a stable of artists (only some of whom were credited), Kahn created thousands of images that were metaphorical, allusive, and self-consciously modern, using an eclectic grab-bag of schools and styles: Dada, Art Deco, photomontage, Art Nouveau, Bauhaus functionalism, and commercial illustration. In Body Modern , Michael Sappol offers the first in-depth critical study of Fritz Kahn and his visual rhetoric. Kahn was an impresario of the modern who catered to readers who were hungry for products and concepts that could help them acquire and perform an overdetermined “modern” identity. He and his artists created playful new visual tropes and genres that used striking metaphors to scientifically explain the “life of Man.” This rich and largely obscure corpus of images was a technology of the self that naturalized the modern and its technologies by situating them inside the human body. The scope of Kahn’s project was vast—entirely new kinds of visual explanation—and so was his influence. Today, his legacy can be seen in textbooks, magazines, posters, public health pamphlets, educational websites, and Hollywood movies. But, Sappol concludes, Kahn’s illustrations also pose profound and unsettling epistemological questions about the construction and performance of the self. Lavishly illustrated with more than 100 images, Body Modern imaginatively explores the relationship between conceptual image, image production, and embodied experience. **

Profiles of the future : an inquiry into the limits of the possible Arthur C. Clarke Warner Books, 1st, 1985
This book originally appeared in 1962, and was based on essays written during the period 1959 - 1961. Since it was concerned with ultimate possibilities, and not with achievements to be expected in the near future, even the remarkable events of the last decade have dated it very little. But Arthur Clarke has gone over the book making corrections and comments where necessary in order to bring it right up-to-date. The author, amongst many fascinating excursions into what the future may hold, discusses the fourth dimension and the obsolescence of the law of gravity, the exploration of the entire solar system and the colonisation of some of it; seas will mined for energy and minerals, and asteroids will be pulled to Earth to supply needed materials; men, already bigger than they need be, may be bred smaller to be more efficient on less food.

The Routledge Handbook of Postsecularity (Routledge International Handbooks) Justin Beaumont Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2019
The Routledge Handbook of Postsecularity offers an internationally significant and comprehensive interdisciplinary collection which provides a series of critical reviews of the current state of the art and future trends in philosophical, theoretical, and conceptual terms. The volume likewise presents a range of empirical knowledges and engagements with postsecularity. A critical yet sympathetic dialogue across disciplinary divides in an international context ensures that the volume covers a wide and interrelated intellectual and geographical scope. The editor’s introduction with Klaus Eder offers a robust foundation for the volume, setting out the central aims and objectives, the rationale for the contributions, and an outline of the structure. Thorny issues of normativity and empirical challenges are highlighted for the reader. The handbook comprises four interrelated sections. Part I: Philosophical meditations discusses postsecularity from philosophical standpoints, and Part II: Theological perspectives presents contributions from a variety of theological viewpoints. Part III: Theory, space, social relations contains pieces from geography, planning, sociology, and religious studies that delve into theoretically informed empirical implications of postsecularity. Part IV: Political and social engagement offers chapters that emphasize the political and social implications of the debate. In the Afterword, Eduardo Mendieta joins the editor to reflect on the notion of reflexive secularization across the volume as a whole, alluding to new lines of inquiry. The handbook is an invaluable guide for graduate and advanced undergraduate teaching, and a key reference for students and scholars of human geography, sociology, political science, applied philosophy, urban and public theology, planning, and urban studies. **

Exterranean: Extraction in the Humanist Anthropocene (Meaning Systems) Phillip John Usher; Fordham University Press, Fordham University Press, New York, 2019
Exterranean concerns the extraction of stuff from the Earth, a process in which matter goes from being sub- to exterranean. By opening up a rich archive of nonmodern texts and images from across Europe, this work offers a bracing riposte to several critical trends in ecological thought. By shifting emphasis from emission to extraction, Usher reorients our perspective away from Earthrise-like globes and shows what is gained by opening the planet to depths within. The book thus maps the material and immaterial connections between the Earth from which we extract, the human and nonhuman agents of extraction, and the extracted matter with which we live daily. Eschewing the self-congratulatory claims of posthumanism, Usher instead elaborates a productive tension between the materially-situated homo of nonmodern humanism and the abstract and aggregated anthropos of the Anthropocene. In dialogue with Michel Serres, Bruno Latour, and other interdisciplinary work in the environmental humanities, Usher shows what premodern material can offer to contemporary theory. Examining textual and visual culture alike, Usher explores works by Ronsard, Montaigne, and Rabelais, early scientific works by Paracelsus and others, as well as objects, engravings, buildings, and the Salt Mines of Wieliczka. Both historicist and speculative in approach, Exterranean lays the groundwork for a comparative ecocriticism that reaches across and untranslates theoretical affordances between periods and languages. ** Review “Usher’s brilliant study is a richly argued, erudite yet lyrical ode to the stuff of which the Earth is made. Exterranean engages with the record of human earthly entanglements in early modern European humanism, but always with a view to counterbalancing current distancing and idealizing views of a globe that is all surface, and no depth. By channeling the voices and agencies of Earth’s nonhuman subterranean elements in all their omnipresent intimacy, Usher thus reconnects us not merely to the history of knowledge and beliefs about the Earth and its contents, but to our own fragile planet.” (Karen Raber, University of Mississippi) “For anyone who might be suffering from Anthropocene fatigue, this is a book to jolt you from your slumbers. What happens to the globe when we shift attention from the outward projection of emissions to extraction ? The earth we thought we knew, and were already mourning, takes on a stunning new critical light.” (Claire Colebrook, Pennsylvania State University) From the Back Cover “For anyone who might be suffering from Anthropocene fatigue, this is a book to jolt you from your slumbers. Breathturn into timestead : the collected later poetry : a bilingual edition Paul Celan, Pierre Joris, Paul Celan Macmillan Trade, Bilingual edition, New York, 2014
Paul Celan, one of the greatest German-language poets of the twentieth century, created an oeuvre that stands as testimony to the horrors of his times and as an attempt to chart a topography for a new, uncontaminated language and world. __Breathturn into Timestead:__ __The__ __Collected Later Poetry__ gathers the five final volumes of his life's work in a bilingual edition, translated and with commentary by the award-winning poet and translator Pierre Joris. This collection displays a mature writer at the height of his talents, following what Celan himself called the "turn" (__Wende)__ of his work away from the lush, surreal metaphors of his earlier verse. Given "the sinister events in its memory," Celan believed that the language of poetry had to become "more sober, more factual . . . 'grayer.'" Abandoning the more sumptuous music of the first books, he pared down his compositions to increase the accuracy of the language that now "does not transfigure or render...

Caught between the Lines: Captives, Frontiers, and National Identity in Argentine Literature and Art (New Hispanisms) Carlos Riobó University of Nebraska Press, New hispanisms, Lincoln, 2019
Caught between the Lines examines how the figure of the captive and the notion of borders have been used in Argentine literature and painting to reflect competing notions of national identity from the nineteenth to the twenty-first centuries. Challenging the conventional approach to the nineteenth-century trope of “civilization versus barbary,” which was intended to criticize the social and ethnic divisions within Argentina in order to create a homogenous society, Carlos Riobó traces the various versions of colonial captivity legends. He argues convincingly that the historical conditions of the colonial period created an ethnic hybridity—a mestizo or culturally mixed identity—that went against the state compulsion for a racially pure identity. This mestizaje was signified not only in Argentina’s literature but also in its art, and Riobó thus analyzes colonial paintings as well as texts. Caught between the Lines focuses on borders and mestizaje (both biological and cultural) as they relate to captives: specifically, how captives have been used to create a national image of Argentina that relies on a logic of separation to justify concepts of national purity and to deny transculturation. ** Review “An outstanding book. The subject of the captive is deeply embedded in the Argentine imagination, and Carlos Riobó reveals its every nuance, from nineteenth-century myths of national racial purity to the re-identification of all its components during the Perón era. A book like this can only be the product of a great teacher who has labored to make his subject attractive to undergraduates. With this book Riobó has established a niche for himself: it sets a professional standard.”—Alfred Mac Adam, professor of Spanish at Barnard College, Columbia University About the Author Carlos Riobó is a professor of Spanish and comparative literature at the City College of New York and the Graduate Center–CUNY. He is the author of Sub-Versions of the Archive: Manuel Puig’s and Severo Sarduy’s Alternative Identities .

"Egon Schiele (1890-1918) is one of the great Expressionist painters. He was taught by Gustav Klimt, and at a very early age, like his Viennese Secession predecessors broke with the traditions of official Austrian art. His numerous self portraits and nude models remained consistent throughout his career in keeping with his erotic, sensual and tormented visions of art. The paintings and text included in this book bring the extraordinary talent of this artist who, sadly, died of Spanish influenza at the age of 28 in Vienna."--Back cover

Martha Rosler - The Bowery in two inadequate descriptive systems [blind drunk, dead drunk, embalmed, buried, gone Rosler, Martha; Edwards, Steve The MIT Press;Afterall, One Work Series, 2012
In The Bowery in two inadequate descriptive systems (1974--1975) Martha Rosler bridged the concerns of conceptual art with those of political documentary. The work, a series of twenty-one black-and-white photographs, twenty-four text panels and three blank panels, embraces the codes of the photo-text experiments of the late 1960s and applies them to the social reality of New York's Lower East Side. The prevailing critical view of The Bowery focuses on its implicit rejection, or critique, of established modes of documentary. In this illustrated, extended essay on the work by Rosler, Steve Edwards argues that although the critical attitude towards documentary is an important dimension of the piece, it does not exhaust the meaning of the project. Edwards situates the work in relation to debates and practices of the period, especially conceptual art and the emergence of the photo-text paradigm exemplified by the work of Robert Smithson, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Hans Haacke, Victor Burgin, and the Women and Work group. In particular, he contextualizes Rosler's work of this period within the politicized San Diego group (which included, in addition to Rosler, Allan Sekula, Fred Lonidier, and Philip Steinmetz). Comparing The Bowery to Rosler's later video vital statistics of a citizen, simply obtained (1977) and the films of the Dziga-Vertov Group (formed by Jean-Luc Godard and Jean-Pierre Gorin), Edwards shows how the work engages with conceptual art and the neo-avant-garde of the 1960s and 1970s. PTL : The Rise and Fall of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker's Evangelical Empire John H. Wigger IRL Press at Oxford University Press, Oxford University Press USA, New York, NY, 2017
In 1974 Jim and Tammy Bakker launched their television show, the PTL Club , from a former furniture store in Charlotte, N.C. with half a dozen friends. By 1987 they stood at the center of a ministry empire that included their own satellite network, a 2300-acre theme park visited by six million people a year, and millions of adoring fans. The Bakkers led a life of conspicuous consumption perfectly aligned with the prosperity gospel they preached. They bought vacation homes, traveled first-class with an entourage and proclaimed that God wanted everyone to be healthy and wealthy. When it all fell apart, after revelations of a sex scandal and massive financial mismanagement, all of America watched more than two years of federal investigation and trial as Jim was eventually convicted on 24 counts of fraud and conspiracy. He would go on to serve five years in federal prison. PTL is more than just the spectacular story of the rise and fall of the Bakkers, John Wigger traces their lives from humble beginnings to wealth, fame, and eventual disgrace. At its core, PTL is the story of a group of people committed to religious innovation, who pushed the boundaries of evangelical religion's engagement with American culture. Drawing on trial transcripts, videotapes, newspaper articles, and interviews with key insiders, dissidents, and lawyers, Wigger reveals the power of religion to redirect American culture. This is the story of a grand vision gone wrong, of the power of big religion in American life and its limits. **

Forgotten Disease: Illnesses Transformed in Chinese Medicine (Studies of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University) Smith, Hilary A. Stanford University Press, Studies of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University, Studies of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University, California, 2017
Following the course of one disease over nearly two millennia, this book provides “a wonderful and highly readable history of Chinese medicine” ( Isis ). Around the turn of the twentieth century, disorders that Chinese physicians had been writing about for over a millennium acquired new identities in Western medicine—sudden turmoil became cholera; flowers of heaven became smallpox; and foot qi became beriberi. Historians have tended to present these new identities as revelations, overlooking evidence that challenges Western ideas about these conditions. In Forgotten Disease , Hilary A. Smith argues that, by privileging nineteenth-century sources, we misrepresent what traditional Chinese doctors were seeing and doing, therefore unfairly viewing their medicine as inferior. “An extraordinary book, replete with rich and imaginative storytelling and insightful analyses.” — Harvard Journal of Asiatic Studies

Big brother NSA & its "little brothers" : the National Security Agency's global surveillance network Terry L. Cook Hearthstone Publishing, Limited, Stated First Edition, PT, 1999
Big Brother NSA is the best researched, best documented book ever written regarding the Beast's international computer system. Many rumors and overly dramatic, undocumented speculations have been postulated regarding a possilbe Beast computer system in Brussels, Belgium. The solid research in "Big Brother NSA" refutes these rumors by informing people that the Beast system is really located in America at the National Security Agency in Fort Meade, Maryland! There is a huge, classified, European Union database center in Brussels, but it is nowhere near the size and capability of the NSA with its ten acres of underground computers at the Fort Meade Army Base. And as you might guess, the Belgium system is connected to NSA via modern telecommunications technology. In fact, virtually every major database in the world, either government or private, is connected to the NSA. Never before has any Christian author done what Terry Cook has accomplished in this book. "Big Brother NSA," is a carefully researched, solidy documented, reliable work that should help to dispel all previous misunderstandings and "Christian" dogma regarding this issue.

He is the author of Sub-Versions of the Archive: Manuel Puig’s and Severo Sarduy’s Alternative Identities .

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/PTL_ The Rise and Fall of Jim a - John Wigger.epub
PTL : The Rise and Fall of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker's Evangelical Empire Wigger, John Oxford University Press, Incorporated, Oxford University Press USA, New York, NY, 2017

A Research Guide to the Ancient World : Print and Electronic Sources John M Weeks; John Marin Weeks; Jason de Medeiros Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Incorporated, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, Lanham, Maryland, 2015
The archaeological study of the ancient world has become increasingly popular in recent years. A Research Guide to the Ancient World: Print and Electronic Sources, is a partially annotated bibliography. The study of the ancient world is usually, although not exclusively, considered a branch of the humanities, including archaeology, art history, languages, literature, philosophy, and related cultural disciplines which consider the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean world, and adjacent Egypt and southwestern Asia. Chronologically the ancient world would extend from the beginning of the Bronze Age of ancient Greece (ca. 1000 BCE) to the fall of the Western Roman Empire (ca. 500 CE). This book will close the traditional subject gap between the humanities (Classical World; Egyptology) and the social sciences (anthropological archaeology; Near East) in the study of the ancient world. This book is uniquely the only bibliographic resource available for such holistic coverage. The volume consists of 17 chapters and seven appendixes, arranged according to the traditional types of library research materials (bibliographies, dictionaries, atlases, etc.). The appendixes are mostly subject specific, including graduate programs in ancient studies, reports from significant archaeological sites, numismatics, and paleography and writing systems. These extensive author and subject indexes help facilitate ease of use. ** Review The study of the ancient Mediterranean, Egypt, and the Near East continues to be a mainstay of Western education, generating a large volume of scholarship. This guide by Weeks and Medeiros focuses on the monographs, books, journals, and electronic resources written primarily in Western European languages, Greek, or Hebrew that treat the history and prehistory of the region. As the authors state, the guide cannot be considered comprehensive because of the enormous literature of the field. To warrant inclusion, works were judged by their availability, scholarly significance, and subject matter. In separate chapters, the authors discuss specialized library and museum collections, subject and regional bibliographies, dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, abstracts and indexes, journals, biographical information, directories of organizations and associations, atlases, photographic and visual collections, and theses and dissertations. Several appendixes provide additional helpful information, such as relevant graduate programs, sources on paleography and writing systems, and numismatics. The most useful appendix, however, is the list of archaeological site reports arranged by country and then by site. Because of the scope of the work, some omissions are inevitable, yet for those libraries that support programs in classics, archaeology, ancient history, biblical studies, and related fields, this guide must be considered a required purchase. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates, graduate students, researchers/faculty. ( CHOICE ) First and foremost, a bibliographic record of resources relating to the ancient world, this book is a collected volume that brings together the disciplines of humanities and the social sciences. Its coverage is holistic and generally excellent. . . .The world is often at our fingertips in an age of technological advances but more often than not knowing where to start and how to get there are questions that concern us. This volume takes away the uncertainty and ensures that when research is undertaken the researcher knows that they are going directly to some relevant information. Arranged in a traditional style by the types of material that would be found in a library, yet with links to finding the information online, this is an extensive volume that will undoubtedly assist researchers in their work. ( Reference Reviews ) With its inclusion of a wide range of resources for those interested in this period, this volume could be useful in libraries in high schools [and] to those in large academic institutions. ( American Reference Books Annual ) Weeks and de Medeiros have done a great service for students of the ancient world, making the vast scholarly literature on the subject much more manageable. The clear organizing principles behind this research guide mean that those who are new to the study of antiquity or those experts who want to broaden their understanding beyond their own region of specialization can very quickly immerse themselves in the scholarly literature. With the increasing specialization of ancient studies, a research guide like this adds a much needed level of accessibility to a field that has become very complex and very regionally focused. It is particularly useful in that it is not just a bibliography confined to major works but offers guidance about libraries, institutes, photographic collections, and academic organizations. The Routledge Handbook of Postsecularity (Routledge International Handbooks) Justin Beaumont Routledge, Taylor and Francis Group, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2019

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/The Wager of Lucien Goldmann - Mitchell Cohen.pdf
Princeton Legacy Library : The Wager of Lucien Goldmann : Tragedy, Dialectics, and a Hidden God Mitchell Cohen Princeton University Press, Princeton University Press, Princeton, 2001
In The Wager of Lucien Goldmann, Mitchell Cohen provides the first full-length study of this major figure of postwar French intellectual life and champion of socialist humanism. While many Parisian leftists staunchly upheld Marxism's'scientificity'in the 1950s and 1960s, Lucien Goldmann insisted that Marxism was by then in severe crisis and had to reinvent itself radically if it were to survive. He rejected the traditional Marxist view of the proletariat and contested the structuralist and antihumanist theorizing that infected French left-wing circles in the tumultuous 1960s.Highly regarded by thinkers as diverse as Jean Piaget and Alasdair MacIntyre, Goldmann is shown here as a socialist who, unlike many others of his time, refused to portray his aspirations for humanity's future as an inexorable unfolding of history's laws. He saw these aspirations instead as a wager akin to Pascal's in the existence of God. “Risk,” Goldmann wrote in his classic study of Pascal and Racine, The Hidden God, “possibility of failure, hope of success, and the synthesis of the three in a faith which is a wager are the essential constituent elements of the human condition.” In The Wager of Lucien Goldmann, Cohen retrieves Goldmann's achievement—his “genetic structuralist” method, his sociology of literature, his libertarian socialist politics.Originally published in 1994.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Culture, Class, Distinction (culture, Economy, And The Social) Tony Bennett, Mike Savage, Elizabeth Silva, Alan Warde, Modesto Gayo-Cal and David Wright Routledge, 2008
Choice Recommended Title, February 2010Culture, Class, Distinction is major contribution to international debates regarding the role of cultural capital in relation to modern forms of inequality. Drawing on a national study of the organisation of cultural practices in contemporary Britain, the authors review Bourdieu's classic study of the relationships between culture and class in the light of subsequent debates. In doing so they re-appraise the relationships between class, gender and ethnicity, music, film, television, literary, and arts consumption, the organisation of sporting and culinary practices, and practices of bodily and self maintenance. As the most comprehensive account to date of the varied interpretations of cultural capital that have been developed in the wake of Bourdieu's work, Culture, Class, Distinction offers the first systematic assessment of the relationships between cultural practice and the social divisions of class, gender and ethnicity in contemporary Britain. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the relationships between culture and society.
