The Phenomenal and the Representational Jeffrey Speaks OUP Oxford, Oxford University Press USA, Oxford, 2015
There are two main ways in which things with minds, like us, differ from things without minds, like tables and chairs. First, we are conscious--there is something that it is like to be us. We instantiate phenomenal properties. Second, we represent, in various ways, our world as being certain ways. We instantiate representational properties. Jeff Speaks attempts to make progress on three questions: What are phenomenal properties? What are representational properties? How are the phenomenal and the representational related? **

Hellenistic Lives: including Alexander the Great (Oxford World's Classics) Plutarch; Robin Waterfield; Andrew Erskine OUP Oxford, Oxford University Press USA, Oxford, 2016
Alexander * Demosthenes * Phocion * Eumenes * Demetrius * Pyrrhus * Agis and Cleomenes * Aratus * Philopoemen * Flamininus This selection of ten Lives traces the history of Hellenistic Greece from the rise of Macedon and Alexander's conquest of the Persian empire to the arrival of the Romans. Plutarch's biographies of eminent politicians, rulers, and soldiers combine vivid portraits of their subjects with a wealth of historical information; they constitute a uniquely important source for the period. We see how Greek politics changed as Macedon's power grew, and we learn of the warlords who followed Alexander. Resistance to Macedon is reflected in the Lives of Demosthenes and Aratus, and that of Agis and Cleomenes, two revolutionary kings of Sparta. The volume concludes with the emergence of Rome in Greek affairs, and the life of Flamininus, the Roman general who defeated Philip V of Macedon. Plutarch's elegant style combines anecdote and erudition, humour and psychological insight, consummately translated by Robin Waterfield and introduced by Andrew Erskine. These Lives from the Hellenistic period complement Greek Lives and Roman Lives in Oxford World's Classics. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more. ** Review With a chronology and maps, this is a practical and helpful book for the student of the Hellenistic period Ray Morris, Classics for All Reviews About the Author Robin Waterfield is a writer living in Greece. Opposition in Western Europe Eva Kolinsky Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), Oxon, 2016
This book, first published in 1987, analysed the state and changing nature of political opposition in Western Europe at the time. For each country covered, it discusses the concept of opposition and the approach adopted by opposition parties. It explores the institutional framework that was in place at the time, the electoral support for opposition, attitudes towards opposition and the criteria for the success of opposition parties. It shows how opposition had changed in nature as a result of both voter re-alignments and also because some interest groups have engaged directly in opposition activities, rather than working through opposition parties as was done previously, thereby increasing the scope of extra parliamentary opposition. Opposition is a fundamental element in democratic politics, and this book therefore throws considerable light on the whole range of political activity in the countries covered. This title will be of interest to students of politics. ** Cover 1 Half Title 2 Title Page 4 Copyright Page 5 Original Title Page 7 Original Copyright Page 8 Table of Contents 9 List of Contributors 11 Preface 13 Acknowledgements 14 Introduction 15 Part I: Concepts of Opposition 23 1. Populists in Power Daniele Albertazzi; Duncan McDonnell Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), Milton Park, Abingdon, Oxon, 2015
The main area of sustained populist growth in recent decades has been Western Europe, where populist parties have not only endured longer than expected, but have increasingly begun to enter government. Focusing on three high-profile cases in Italy and Switzerland – the Popolo della Libertà (PDL), Lega Nord (LN) and Schweizerische Volkspartei (SVP) – Populists in Power is the first in-depth comparative study to examine whether these parties are indeed doomed to failure in office as many commentators have claimed. Albertazzi and McDonnell's findings run contrary to much of the received wisdom. Based on extensive original research and fieldwork, they show that populist parties can be built to last, can achieve key policy victories and can survive the experience of government, without losing the support of either the voters or those within their parties. Contributing a new perspective to studies in populist politics, Populists in Power is essential reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as scholars interested in modern government, parties and politics.

The European Mainstream and the Populist Radical Right (Europa Regional Perspectives) Pontus Odmalm and Eve Hepburn Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), Abingdon, 2017
Are populist radical right (PRR) parties the only alternatives for voters seeking restrictive and assimilationist outcomes? Or is a mainstream choice available? Popular opinion and social media commentaries often criticize mainstream parties for facing in the same liberal and multicultural direction. Literature on parties and elections equally suggests a convergence of policy positions and the disappearance of any significant differences between parties. This edited volume is an attempt to challenge such perceptions and conclusions. By systematically coding manifestos for seventeen mainstream and six PRR parties in Western Europe, the book explores positional differences between mainstream and niche contenders over three key elections between 2002 and 2015. The findings indicate more choice than initially expected, but these restrictive and assimilationist options are usually in close proximity to each other and typically less intense than those of the PRR. This can help explain the continuous growth of the PRR despite the presence of a mainstream alternative. Yet party system dynamics also matter. Contributing authors thus investigate a number of arguments in the precarious relationship between mainstream parties, the electorate and the PRR, as well as between different mainstream parties.-- Provided by Publisher

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/The Radical Left Party Family i - Paolo Chiocchetti.pdf
The Radical Left Party Family in Western Europe, 1989-2015 (Routledge Studies in Radical History and Politics) Paolo Chiocchetti Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), New York, NY, 2017
This book provides an innovative analysis and interpretation of the overall trajectory of the Western European radical left from 1989 to 2015. After the collapse of really existing communism, this party family renewed itself and embarked on a recovery path, seeking to fill the vacuum of representation of disaffected working-class and welfarist constituencies created by the progressive neoliberalisation of European societies. The radical left thus emerged as a significant factor of contemporary political life but, despite some electoral gains and a few recent breakthroughs (SYRIZA in Greece, PODEMOS in Spain), it altogether failed to embody a credible alternative to neoliberalism and to pave the way for a turn to a different developmental model. This book investigates why this was the case, combining aggregate (17 countries), case study (Germany, Italy, and France), and comparative methods. It accurately charts the evolution of the nature, strength, cohesion, and influence of the Western European radical left, offering new insights in explaining its behaviour, success, and limits. It is essential reading for scholars, students, and activists interested in the radical left and in contemporary European politics.

Social Structure, Value Orientations and Party Choice in Western Europe (Palgrave Studies in European Political Sociology) Oddbjørn Knutsen This Palgrave Macmillan Imprint Is Published By Springer Nature,, Springer Nature, Cham, Switzerland, 2018
This book analyses the impact of socio-structural variables, such as social class, religion, urban/rural residence, age and gender, on influencing an individual’s voting preferences. There have been major changes in recent decades both to social structure and how social structure determines people’s voting behaviour. There has also been a shift in value orientations, for example from religious to secular values and from more authoritarian to libertarian values. The author addresses the questions: How do social structure and value orientations influence party choice in advanced industrial democracies?; To what extent is the impact of social structure on party choice transmitted via value orientations?; To what extent is the impact of value orientations on party choice causal effects when controlled for the prior structural variables? The book will be of use to advanced students and scholars in the fields of comparative politics, electoral politics and political sociology. ** Review “This book offers a very comprehensive analysis of the social foundations of contemporary European party systems. Knutsen artfully assembles data from the European Values Study to describe the persistence and change in the social base of voting behavior. The book demonstrates that social structural influences have not faded away as predictors of voting behavior, but the nature of some alignments has changed over time. This is a very valuable addition to the European voting behavior literature.” (Professor Russell J. Dalton, University of California, Irvine, USA) “Knutsen's meticulous probing into public political opinion and partisan choices in 18 European democracies conveys detailed insights into the structure of popular beliefs and partisan alignments at the end of the first decade of the new millennium. He is careful to highlight both common patterns pertaining across the entire set of postindustrial polities as well as persistent differences between groups of countries. Political cleavages are crystallized around structural social divides, albeit they are most sharply configured around party families that did not exist in the post-World War II order. And, pace much talk about political dealignment, it is in the most advanced postindustrial polities that show the strongest structuring of the vote. Knutsen's study may serve as foundation from which much fruitful research can be launched.” (Professor Herbert Kitschelt, Duke University, USA) From the Back Cover This book analyses the impact of socio-structural variables, such as social class, religion, urban/rural residence, age and gender, on influencing an individual’s voting preferences. Muslim Democratic Parties in the Middle East: Economy and Politics of Islamist Moderation (Middle East Studies) A. Kadir Yildirim Indiana University Press, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., Bloomington, 2017
“Represents an important advancement in developing the strand of literature that considers how economic conditions affect Islamist movements.” —Middle Eastern Studies A. Kadir Yildirim and other scholars have used the term “Muslim Democrat” to describe moderate Islamist political parties, suggesting a parallel with Christian Democratic parties in Europe. These parties (MDPs) are marked by their adherence to a secular political regime, normative commitment to the rules of a democratic political system, and the democratic political representation of a religious identity. In this book, Yildirim draws on extensive field research in Turkey, Egypt, and Morocco to examine this phenomenon and assess the interaction of economic and political factors in the development of MDPs. Distinguishing between “competitive [economic] liberalization” and “crony liberalization,” he argues that MDPs are more likely to emerge and succeed in the context of the former. He summarizes that the broader implication is that the economic liberalization models adopted by governments in the region in the wake of the Arab Spring have significant implications for the future direction of party systems and democratic reform.

The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Vol. III Gibbon, Edward, 1737-1794 null, null, null
Spanning thirteen centuries from the age of Trajan to the taking of Constantinople by the Turks, "Decline & Fall" is one of the greatest narratives in European Literature. About the Author Edward Gibbon was born in 1737 in Putney, England, and was the only child of his parents to survive infancy. Although his education was frequently interrupted by ill health, his knowledge was far-reaching. His brief career as an undergraduate at Magdalen College, Oxford, ended when he joined the Catholic Church. His father sent him to Lausanne, in Switzerland, where, while studying Greek and French for the next five years, he re-joined the Protestant Church. In 1761 he published his  Essai sur l'étude de la Littérature ; the English version appeared in 1764. Meanwhile, Gibbon served as a captain in the Hampshire Militia until 1763, when he returned to the Continent. It was while he was in Rome in 1764 that he first conceived the work that was eventually to become The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire . In 1774, after the death of his father, Gibbon settled in London and was elected to Parliament where he sat for the next eight years, although he never once spoke in the Commons. He also took his place among the literary circles of London. The first volume of his famous History  was published in 1776; it was highly praised for its learning and style but incurred some censure for its treatment of the early Christians. The second and third volumes appeared in 1781 and the final three, which were written in Lausanne, in 1788. He died while on a visit to his friend, Lord Sheffield, who posthumously edited Gibbon's autobiographical papers and published them in 1796. http://www.archive.org/details/historydeclinefa02gibb

Thomas Aquinas and His Legacy (Studies in Philosophy and the History of Philosophy, Volume 28) David M. Gallagher (Editor) The Catholic University of America Press, Catholic University of America Press, Washington, D.C., 1994
The ten essays in this collection approach the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas not merely as an object of scholarly interest but also as a framework for addressing perennial philosophical questions, even as they are raised and debated in our own times. The first five articles are expositions of important philosophical themes as developed in Aquinas's own works. In the last five, the authors bring Aquinas's thought to bear on contemporary philosophical discussions of metaphysical, ethical, and social issues. In the first essay, Kenneth L. Schmitz explores the centrality of esse in Aquinas's thought and shows the richness of this notion by chronicling the changing currents in its study over the course of this century. Next, Jorge J.E. Gracia describes Aquinas's distinctive solution to the age-old problem of the ontological status of universals. Turning to ethical themes, David M. Gallagher outlines the precise nature of moral goodness and how Thomas relates it to his metaphysical understanding of the good. Gregory Martin Reichberg takes up the more specific issue of the possibility and nature of moral responsibility within the activity of theoretical or speculative thought. In the final essay of the first part, Edward P. Mahoney examines Aquinas's arguments against Averroes' doctrine of the unity of the intellect in order to show the consistency of Aquinas's teaching throughout his career. Beginning the second set of articles, Oliva Blanchette contrasts Thomas's notion of perfection with that of Charles Hartshorne, demonstrating how Hartshorne arrives at his particular understanding of the divine perfection. Alejandro Llano argues that the understanding of possibility employed by Jaako Hintikka and Simo Knuuttila is much narrower than Aquinas's analogical understanding, and that consequently they do not distinguish between logical and ontological possibilities. Turning to political philosophy, John P. Hittinger examines Jacques Maritain and Yves Simon's Thomistically inspired arguments for the desirability of modern liberal democracies, while questioning their consistency with Thomas's own political thought. Arguments that could have direct bearing on questions in medical ethics are examined in William A. Wallace's essay, in which he appeals to principles of Thomistic natural philosophy to argue that personal death may well precede the biological death of the human body. In the final article, Stephen F. Brown shows how Henry of Ghent rejected Thomas's understanding of theology's relationship to all lower sciences

Take 7 Meer, Vonne van der Simon and Schuster, Inc., 2006
Deleuze and Anarchism (Deleuze Connections) Chantelle Gray van Heerden; Aragorn Eloff Edinburgh University Press, Deleuze Connections, Edinburgh, United Kingdom, 2019
### Explores Deleuze and Guattari’s own diverse conceptions of anarchism and expands it in the spirit of their philosophy This collection of 13 essays addresses and explores Deleuze and Guattari’s relationship to the notion of anarchism: in the diverse ways that they conceived of and referred to it throughout their work, and also more broadly in terms of the spirit of their philosophy and in their critique of capitalism and the State. Both Deleuze and Guattari were deeply affected by the events of May ’68 and an anarchist sensibility permeates their philosophy. However, they never explicitly sustained a discussion of anarchism in their work. Their concept of anarchism is diverse and they referred to in very different senses throughout their writings. This is the first collection to bring Deleuze and Guattari together with anarchism in a focused and sustained way. ### Key Features * The only book to focus exclusively on the philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari and anarchism * Includes an anthropological perspective, a line of enquiry pioneered by Pierre Clastres, referred to by Deleuze and Guattari and recently renewed by contemporary anthropologists such as Eduardo Vivieros de Castro and Eduardo Kohn * Provides historical overviews alongside current anarchist applications of Deleuze and Guattari’s work ### Contributors **Jesse Cohn**, Purdue University Northwest, USA. **Aragorn Eloff**, independent researcher and Director of the Institute for Critical Animal Studies in Africa. **Elmo Feiten**, independent researcher. **Chantelle Gray van Heerden**, University of South Africa (UNISA), South Africa. **Christoph Hubatschke**, University of Vienna, Austria. **Nathan Jun**, Midwestern State University, USA. **Gregory Kalyniuk**, independent researcher. **Thomas Nail**, University of Denver, USA. **Paul Raekstad**, University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. **Andrew Stones**, University of Warwick, UK. **Alejandro de la Torre Hernández**, National Institute of Anthropology and History, Mexico **Gerónimo Barrera de la Torre**, University of Texas, Austin. **Natascia Tose**, independent researcher. **Elizabet Vasileva**, Loughborough University, UK.

The Practice of Socialist Internationalism : European Socialists and International Politics, 1914-1960 Talbot C. Imlay IRL Press at Oxford University Press, 1, 2017
The Practice of Socialist Internationalism examines the efforts of British, French, and German socialist parties to cooperate with one another on concrete international issues. Drawing on archival research in twelve countries, it spans the years from the First World War to the early 1960s, paying particular attention to the two post-war periods (1918 to the late 1920s and 1945 to the mid-1950s), during which national and international politics were recast. During these years, European socialists operated simultaneously in national and transnational spaces, and the book explores the ways in which these two spaces overlapped. In addition to highlighting a neglected dimension of twentieth-century European socialism, it provides novel perspectives on two related subjects: the history of internationalism and the history of international politics. Scholars of internationalism focus either on state or on non-state actors (INGOs), but socialist parties constituted something of a hybrid: rooted more firmly in national politics than most INGOs, they were also more self-consciously internationalist than state actors. Just as importantly, European socialists sought to forge a new practice of international relations, one that would emerge from their collective efforts to work out ‘socialist’ approaches to pressing issues of European politics such as post-war reconstruction, European integration, and decolonization. While the extent of their success is debatable, the efforts of European socialists to identify distinct approaches act as a spotlight, illuminating obscure yet vital aspects of an issue.

The Evolution of Green Politics : Development and Change Within European Green Parties Jonathan M Burchell Earthscan Publications Ltd., Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2002
The emergence of Green parties throughout Europe during the 1980s marked the arrival of a "new'" form of political movement and a challenge to existing party models. However, since the "green wave" of the 1980s these parties have struggled to solidify their electoral successes in the face of stiff opposition from established political parties. This original book, the first to address the future direction of the European Green parties, presents an in-depth, thematic comparative approach to the analysis of recent Green party development and change, questioning whether the process of party evolution has resulted in the ideological dilution of Green ideals and objectives. With Green parties across Europe experiencing a significant upturn in support in recent years, the current period marks an important stage in the shaping of Green politics across Europe. If we are to gain a clearer picture of the impact that the Green parties may have in the new millennium, this book argues that we must understand the issues and themes which have shaped their reemergence as a more mature political challenge.

Challenging Austerity: Radical Left and Social Movements in the South of Europe (Routledge Studies in Radical History and Politics) Beltrán Roca (editor), Emma Martín-Díaz (editor), Ibán Díaz-Parra (editor) Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, Routledge Studies In Radical History And Politics, 1st Edition, 2017
This book analyses social movements and radical political parties’ strategies in Spain, Greece, Portugal and Italy from 2008 to today. Events in 2011 such as the Arab Spring and the __indignados__ movement in Spain initiated a new cycle of social protest. This book explores how the economic crisis and policies of austerity have transformed and continue to transform social movements, trade unions and radical political parties in Southern Europe. The economic crisis has led to a rise in protest movements, which confront political institutions and conventional forms of democracy, and develop new spatial and organisational strategies. This book examines these cases, in addition to those groups who, contrastingly, have used institutional politics to achieve their aims, such as new political parties like Podemos in Spain or Movimento 5 Stelle in Italy. Analysing the extent to which there has been a change in approach when it comes to contesting neo-liberal capitalism, this book makes an important contribution to the study of social movements and radical politics. With a comparative perspective and an emphasis on studying the largely unexplored recent social and political dynamics in the European periphery, this book is essential reading for students, scholars and activists interested in social movements, radical politics and European politics more generally.

Party Competition between Unequals: Strategies and Electoral Fortunes in Western Europe (Cambridge Studies in Comparative Politics) Bonnie M. Meguid Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), Cambridge Studies in Comparative Politics, 1, 2008
Why do some political parties flourish, while others flounder? In this book, Meguid examines variation in the electoral trajectories of the new set of single-issue parties: green, radical right, and ethnoterritorial parties. Instead of being dictated by electoral institutions or the socioeconomic climate, as the dominant theories contend, the fortunes of these niche parties, she argues, are shaped by the strategic responses of mainstream parties. She advances a new theory of party competition in which mainstream parties facing unequal competitors have access to a wider and more effective set of strategies than posited by standard spatial models. Combining statistical analyzes with in-depth case studies from Western Europe, the book explores how and why established parties undermine niche parties or turn them into weapons against their mainstream party opponents. This study of competition between unequals thus provides broader insights into the nature and outcome of competition between political equals.

After the Third Way: The Future of Social Democracy in Europe (Policy Network) Olaf Cramme; Patrick Diamond; Michael McTernan I.B. Tauris; Bloomsbury, Bloomsbury UK, London, 2012
Those who hoped the collapse of financial markets would usher in the end of neoliberalism and rehabilitate support for traditional social democratic policies programmes have been disappointed. It is not only the irrationality of markets which is the focus of public discontent, but the inefficiency of states and the inability of elected governments to humanise and control global market capitalism. So, in the aftermath of the 2008 crash prompted by the failure of US financial services conglomerate, Lehman Brothers, this book addresses a deceptively simple question: what is to be done? It makes the case for a new, post-crisis settlement harnessing the dynamic traditions of social liberalism and social democracy as the foundation for progressive reforms geared towards alleviating crisis aftershocks and addressing the deep-seated structural challenges afflicting Western capitalist democracies.

The Geopolitics of Real Estate: Reconfiguring Property, Capital and Rights (Geopolitical Bodies, Material Worlds) Rogers Research Fellow, Dallas Rowman and Littlefield International, Geopolitical bodies, material worlds, London, 2017
Individual foreign investment in Western nation states is a long-standing geopolitical issue. The expansion of the middle class in BRICS and Asian countries, and their increased activity in Western real estate markets as foreign investors, have introduced new and revived existing cultural and geopolitical sensitivities. In this book, Dallas Rogers develops a new history of foreign real estate investment by mapping the movement of human and financial capital over more than four centuries. The book argues the reconfiguration of Asian geopolitical power has ruptured the conceptual landscape for understanding international land and real estate relations. Drawing on assemblage theories (Latour, Deleuze and Guattari), assemblage analytical tactics (Sassen and Ong) and discursive media theories (Kittler and Foucault) a series of vignettes of land and real estate crisis are presented. The book demonstrates how foreign land claimers and global real estate professionals colonise, subvert and act beyond the governance structures of settler-societies to facilitate new types of capital circulation and accumulation around the world. ** Review The globalisation of real estate is impacting many cities in the world. Whilst many scholars have written two-dimensional descriptive studies of global real estate trends, Dallas Rogers has produced a riveting analysis of the historical forces in global real estate investment. His book provides a rich context for analysing the property markets of the world’s most important cities. (Peter Phibbs, Professor, University of Sydney) The globalisation of real estate has been a topic where investigative journalists and populist authors have out-paced academic scholars. One of the objectives of this timely and innovative volume by Dallas Rogers is to re-frame current property debates in settler societies. The book both deepens and also reconfigures our understanding of land as commodity through a post-structural exegesis of property episodes across time and space. (David Ley, Professor, University of British Columbia) Ingenious. With forensic analytical acuity, Dallas Rogers connects seemingly disparate processes and events to reveal the organizing logics that have always driven the geopolitical transfer of land, bodies, labour and capital. Taking us from Indigenous creation stories, to communism in China, Westphalian sovereignty, the invention of title deeds, and the rise of populist wealth-creation manuals Rogers brings a distinctive perspective to studies of geopolitics, real estate and settler-colonialism alike. This is a book that will challenge these heretofore separate debates into a more profound and transformative dialogue with one another. (Libby Porter, Associate Professor, Centre for Urban Research, RMIT University) About the Author Dallas Rogers is Lecturer in Urban Studies at the University of Western Sydney. His projects investigate the relationships between globalising urban space, infrastructure, and housing poverty and wealth. He has appeared in domestic and international media, participated in a parliamentary briefing, is regularly invited to speak at academic and professional forums and publishes on urban and housing issues in academic and industry journals. Europe's fault lines : racism and the rise of the right Elizabeth ’Liz’ Fekete Penguin Random House LLC (Publisher Services), International version, La Vergne, 2018
An expansive investigation into the relationship between contemporary states and the far-right It is clear that the right is on the rise, but after Brexit, the election of Donald Trump and the spike in popularity of extreme-right parties across Europe, the question on everyone’s minds is: how did this happen? An expansive investigation of the ways in which a newly configured right interconnects with anti-democratic and illiberal forces at the level of the state, Europe’s Fault Lines provides much-needed answers, revealing some uncomfortable truths. What appear to be “blind spots” about far-right extremism on the part of the state are shown to constitute collusion—as police, intelligence agencies and the military embark on practices of covert policing that bring them into direct or indirect contact with the far right, in ways that bring to mind the darkest days of Europe’s authoritarian past. Old racisms may be structured deep in European thought, but they have been revitalised and spun in new ways: the war on terror, the cultural revolution from the right, and the migration-linked demonisation of the destitute “scrounger.” Drawing on more than three decades of work for the Institute of Race Relations, Liz Fekete exposes the fundamental fault lines of racism an tarianism in contemporary Europe. ** Review “Racism, for Liz Fekete, is the breeding ground of fascism, and her struggle to combat both—on the ground and in her writings—has earned her the reputation of being an intrepid organiser, an inspirational speaker and an organic intellectual.” —A. Sivanandan, Director of the Institute of Race Relations “For twenty-five years, Fekete relentlessly monitored Europe’s far right while the continent’s leaders preferred to look away. With right-wing extremism finally recognised by the mainstream as a fundamental threat to Europe’s future, her indictment of those who enabled, amplified, and aided the rise of the hard right is an essential contribution to the defense of democratic values.” —Arun Kundnani, author of *The Muslims are Coming * “For the twenty-five years I have known Liz Fekete she has been a tireless anti-racist and anti-fascist fighter, as well as a people’s intellectual and a political inspiration. Fekete brings that cumulative experience, insight and commitment to her brilliant new book, Europe’s Fault Lines , which maps the shifting terrain of racism and right wing populism in Europe, as well as continued forms of resistance. This book not only paints a gut-wrenching portrait of the vulgarity and violence of Neoliberalism, but through her clarity of analysis, Fekete gives us sustenance for the struggles that lay ahead.” —Barbara Ransby, author of *Eslanda: The Large and Unconventional Life of Mrs Paul Robeson * “In Europe’s Fault Lines , Liz Fekete has not only written an excellent study of how racism is once again being normalised but how, in turn, it is acting as cloak under which fascism is resurgent.” —Nicolas Lalaguna, *Morning Star * About the Author Liz Fekete is Director of the Institute of Race Relations, where she has worked for over thirty years. She heads its European Research Programme (ERP) and is Advisory Editor to its journal Race & Class . She is the author of A Suitable Enemy: Racism, Migration and Islamophobia in Europe .

A Thousand Names for Joy : Living in Harmony with the Way Things Are Mitchell, Stephen; Katie, Byron Crown Publishing Group;Harmony Books, Penguin Random House LLC, New York, 2007
In her first two books, Byron Katie showed how suffering can be ended by questioning the stressful thoughts that create it, through a process of self-inquiry she calls The Work. Now, in A Thousand Names for Joy, she encourages us to discover the freedom that lives on the other side of inquiry. Stephen Mitchell'the renowned translator of the Tao Te Ching'selected provocative excerpts from that ancient text as a stimulus for Katie to talk about the most essential issues that face us all: life and death, good and evil, love, work, and fulfillment. The result is a book that allows the timeless insights of the Tao Te Ching to resonate anew for us today, while offering a vivid and illuminating glimpse into the life of someone who for twenty years'ever since she "woke up to reality" one morning in 1986'has been living what Lao-tzu wrote more than 2,500 years ago. Katie's profound, lighthearted wisdom is not theoretical; it is absolutely authentic. That is what makes this book so compelling. It's a portrait of a woman who is imperturbably joyous, whether she is dancing with her infant granddaughter or finds that her house has been emptied out by burglars, whether she stands before a man about to kill her or embarks on the adventure of walking to the kitchen, whether she learns that she is going blind, flunks a "How Good a Lover Are You'" test, or is diagnosed with cancer. With her stories of total ease in all circumstances, Katie does more than describe the awakened mind; she lets you see it, feel it, in action. And she shows you how that mind is yours as well. From the Hardcover edition.

Putin's kleptocracy: who owns Russia? / Karen Dawisha Dawisha, Karen Simon & Schuster Paperbacks, First Simon & Schuster paperback edition, New York, September 2015
The raging question in the world today is who is the real Vladimir Putin and what are his intentions. Karen Dawisha’s brilliant Putin’s Kleptocracy provides an answer, describing how Putin got to power, the cabal he brought with him, the billions they have looted, and his plan to restore the Greater Russia. Russian scholar Dawisha describes and exposes the origins of Putin’s kleptocratic regime. She presents extensive new evidence about the Putin circle’s use of public positions for personal gain even before Putin became president in 2000. She documents the establishment of Bank Rossiya, now sanctioned by the US; the rise of the Ozero cooperative, founded by Putin and others who are now subject to visa bans and asset freezes; the links between Putin, Petromed, and “Putin’s Palace” near Sochi; and the role of security officials from Putin’s KGB days in Leningrad and Dresden, many of whom have maintained their contacts with Russian organized crime. Putin’s Kleptocracy is the result of years of research into the KGB and the various thriving Russian crime syndicates. Dawisha’s sources include Stasi archives; Russian insiders; investigative journalists in the US, Britain, Germany, Finland, France, and Italy; and Western officials who served in Moscow. Russian journalists wrote part of this story when the Russian media was still free. “Many of them died for this story, and their work has largely been scrubbed from the Internet, and even from Russian libraries,” Dawisha says. “But some of that work remains.” ** Dedication 7 Introduction 8 1. 1983 : Reagan, Andropov, and a world on the brink Downing, Taylor Hachette Books, First U.S. edition: April 2018, New York, NY, 2018
"A riveting, real-life thriller about 1983--the year tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union nearly brought the world to the point of nuclear Armageddon. The year 1983 was an extremely dangerous one--more dangerous than 1962, the year of the Cuban Missile Crisis. In the United States, President Reagan vastly increased defense spending, described the Soviet Union as an 'evil empire,' and launched the 'Star Wars' Strategic Defense Initiative to shield the country from incoming missiles. Seeing all this, Yuri Andropov, the paranoid Soviet leader, became convinced that the US really meant to attack the Soviet Union and he put the KGB on high alert, looking for signs of an imminent nuclear attack. When a Soviet plane shot down a Korean civilian jet, Reagan described it as 'a crime against humanity.' And Moscow grew increasingly concerned about America's language and behavior. Would they attack? The temperature rose fast. In November the West launched a wargame exercise, codenamed 'Abel Archer,' that looked to the Soviets like the real thing. With Andropov's finger inching ever closer to the nuclear button, the world was truly on the brink. This is an extraordinary and largely unknown Cold War story of spies and double agents, of missiles being readied, intelligence failures, misunderstandings, and the panic of world leaders. With access to hundreds of astonishing new documents, Taylor Downing tells for the first time the gripping but true story of how near the world came to nuclear war in 1983."--Publisher description.

Teaching the Actuality of Revolution: Aesthetics, Unlearning, and the Sensations of Struggle Derek R. Ford Iskra Books, PS, 2023
Exploring the nexus between aesthetics, pedagogy, and politics illustrates the central role education plays in reproducing injustice and inhibiting confidence in revolutionary struggle. Demonstrating how capitalism and its attendant forms of oppression are not merely cognitive but perceptual, Derek R. Ford proposes that revolutionary education demands the production of aesthetic experiences through which we sense the possibility and actuality of alternative worlds. In response to this pressing task, Ford develops a praxis of teaching and a pedagogy of unlearning that, in our current conjuncture, creates conditions for encountering what Jennifer Ponce de León calls "an other aesthetics. " Mapping contemporary capital as a perceptual ecology of structures, social relations, beliefs, and feelings, Teaching the Actuality of Revolution provides an extensive new set of concepts, practices, and readings for revolutionaries to better plan, enact, reflect on, and refine our organizing efforts. "This book offers an expansive and inspiring examination of an issue crucially important to revolutionary practice and the struggles of all working class and oppressed people: how are humans' understanding and perception of the world forged through class struggle? In it, Derek Ford brilliantly illuminates key insights of Marx and Engels' work, as well as that of Louis Althusser, Henri Lefebvre, Paulo Freire, and many contemporary Marxist theorists. His far-reaching discussions of ideology, aesthetics, pedagogy, and the arts offer valuable tools for unlearning capital's perceptual ecology and forging new worlds of sense and perception that concretely contribute to the communist struggle. " -Jennifer Ponce de León, author of Another Aesthetics Is Possible: Arts of Rebellion in the Fourth World War. "Ford expertly wields a robust analysis of sensory perception and perceptual mapping against the dominant aesthetic ecological regime which reigns as an extension of the dictatorship of capital and which is reproduced, according to Ford, pedagogically. What emerges from this exploration is essential reading for educators, organizers, and anyone interested in (un)learning the ideology and imposed sensorium of capital and, ultimately, in teaching the actuality of revolution!" -Breht O'Shea, Revolutionary Left Radio
