Als die Evangelien verfasst wurden, stand das frühchristliche Denken schon in Beziehung zu den antiken Erinnerungskulturen und den vielfältigen Traditionen hellenistischer Geschichtsschreibung. Dennoch ist bisher wenig darüber geschrieben worden, wie sich das frühchristliche Geschichtsbewusstsein literarisch entwickelt hat. In dieser Studie untersucht Eve-Marie Becker die verschiedenen Kontexte und Formen, in denen Geschichte in der hellenistischen Literaturtradition geschrieben und gedeutet wurde, und konzentriert sich dabei speziell auf die Zeit, in der die neutestamentlichen Schriften entstanden: von der Mitte des ersten bis zum frühen zweiten Jahrhundert. Becker weist auf Ansätze frühchristlichen Geschichtsbewusstseins schon bei Paulus hin und beschreibt im Weiteren die konzeptionellen Ursprünge geschichtsschreibender Literatur von Markus zu Lukas. What is the relationship between the earliest Gospel—Mark—and the first congregational letters of the apostle Paul? Heidrun E. Mader provides a comprehensive overview of the relationship between the Pauline epistles and the Gospel of Mark. She addresses several themes that Paul and Mark treat in similar ways and integrates them into a consistent overall picture. The following themes are addressed: the universalistic concept of the gospel; the integration of gentiles in Christ; the place of the Torah in early Christian community life; the central role of the cross. Mader shows that there are specific and exclusive similarities between Paul and Mark that go beyond commonalities with other ancient writings. However, the results do not necessarily suggest direct literary dependence. Pauline theology could also have been transmitted orally, especially if we accept the hypothesis that Mark lived in Rome, where he could have encountered Paul himself in the early 60s.

This book provides an in-depth discussion of the cultural and missional implications of the explosion of charismatic Christianity on mainline denominations in Africa. The book proposes that the charismatization of mainline churches is a contextual, missional, and transcultural phenomenon that enriches and invigorates African Christian communities. Focused on the experience of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania and using Prosperity Gospel as an example, the book explores how some mainline churches are being enriched by adopting practices of charismatic Christianity. It proposes a holistic and contextual understanding of the Prosperity Gospel, understood as the mafanikio gospel in Tanzania, as a relevant theological resource for Lutherans in Dar-es-Salaam. In doing so, it intends to contribute to the needed paradigm shift in theological discourses around Prosperity Gospel to challenge stereotypical criticisms that label it false and misleading.

Der vorliegende Band beleuchtet aus theologischer Perspektive die etablierten Bibeltexte in der artifiziell zu verstehenden Zeitperiode zwischen dem 7. und dem 10. Jh., in der ein steigender Rekurs auf die patristische Schriftauslegung zu beobachten ist. Diese trug neben der Überlieferung des eindrücklichen theologischen Gehalts auch zur aktiven Einbettung der Schrift in liturgische Riten bei. Neben der Aufteilung der alttestamentlichen Perikopen fokussiert sich die vorliegende Untersuchung auf einige Evangeliumstexte, die sich als eine postbaptismale Katechese erwiesen. In einem abschließenden Beitrag wird die Rolle der Psalmen im Schulwesen und in den christlichen Familien untersucht.

Following a tradition inaugurated after Vatican II, a delegation of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul) travels each year to Rome for the feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul. The mem- bers of the delegation, headed by a high-ranking bishop of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, are welcomed in an official audience by the Pope and meet after- wards with the representatives of the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity. On June 29, they attend the celebration of the Eucharist presided over by the Pope in St Peter’s Cathedral in honor of the two Apostles. On November 30, a similar delegation is sent each year to the Ecumenical Patriarchate by the Pope to join the feast of the Apostle Andrew, who by tradition is considered the founder of the Church of Constantinople. The delegation is received at the Phanar by the Ecumenical Patriarch and invited to the liturgy celebrated in St Georges’ Cathedral in memory of Apostle Andrew. The exchange of del- egations shows the fraternal relationships existing nowadays between the Church of Rome and the Church of Constantinople, whose leaders committed themselves in the 1960s to the recovery of the visible unity between Orthodoxy and Catholicism, which was progressively broken at the beginning of the sec- ond millennium. The date of 1054 is regarded as the conventional year of the schism between the Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church. However, their separation was a much longer process that started before the eleventh century and continued in the centuries that followed, despite early attempts at reconciliation, especially in the thirteenth (Council of Lyon, 1274) and four- teenth centuries (Council of Ferrara-Florence 1438–1439).

Die Heilige Schrift wurde zu einer Grundlage für die christliche Unterweisung in Konstantinopel, indem sie im Gottesdienst zu jedem Tauftermin sowie nach der Taufe eine Art der Katechese darstellte. Zudem galt die Bibel als eine Basis für Erziehungs- bzw. Bildungszwecke in Konstantinopel. Der vorliegende Band beleuchtet aus theologischer Perspektive die etablierten Bibeltexte in der artifiziell zu verstehenden Zeitperiode zwischen dem 7. und dem 10. Jh., in der ein steigender Rekurs auf die patristische Schriftauslegung zu beobachten ist. Diese trug neben der Überlieferung des eindrücklichen theologischen Gehalts auch zur aktiven Einbettung der Schrift in liturgische Riten bei. Neben der Aufteilung der alttestamentlichen Perikopen fokussiert sich die vorliegende Untersuchung auf einige Evangeliumstexte, die sich als eine postbaptismale Katechese erwiesen. In einem abschließenden Beitrag wird die Rolle der Psalmen im Schulwesen und in den christlichen Familien untersucht.

The volume includes the original manuscript of Shakir Pashov on the history of the Gypsies in Europe, followed by archival documents highlighting his life and work, and the text of the first booklet devoted to him, which was the first attempt to create a Roma historical narrative. There is also included an extended biography of Shakir Pashov as known by now. The book contributes to identifying and highlighting the numerous inputs Roma have had to shape their activism and popularise their historical knowledge. Papyri, ostraca, and tablets document social, economic, political, and multilingual circumstances of the Greco-Roman period and are one of the best sources for understanding New Testament times. Compared to the first studies devoted to papyri and the New Testament some hundred years ago, the amount of available material has increased twentyfold. This book argues that Romans credited certain living persons with the capacity to function as cult statues, that is, as images and vessels of the divine. After addressing the cultural context that produced the idea that humans can become images of the divine, the text shows how emperors, bishops, and others imitated the aesthetic, immobility, and material setting of statuary to establish themselves as iconic and how their role as mediators with the divine was eventually transferred to new categories of material objects, such as relics and icons. The figure of the iconic person thus is shown to have bridged the cult statues of Antiquity with the new mechanisms of interaction with the divine that Christians used for the following millennium. By integrating living persons in the art historical analysis of the spaces and advocating for the need to consider the animation of artefacts together with the reification of bodies, this study marks an important development in the study of the past.
